[Q] Software update on wifi - Nook Color General

I don't understand the system updates on the nook. They tell you that, on wifi, the nookcolor will automatically update to the newest software upgrade when idle. My nookcolor has been on, connected to my wifi network for the past 6 hours. There has been no update whatsoever. Still on 1.0.0.
Am I doing something wrong?

Open the Library. At the bottom of the screen, immediately to the left of the search box, you'll see a refresh button.
Press the button.
The NC should sync with BN, which also involves a check for software updates. If there's an update available, it should give you at least a notification. I can't recall whether it downloads in the background first, but either way, you'll get an update.

I wish that would work. I've been trying that. No luck.

It should eventually update but you can also sideload the update after downloading it from B&N. The entire process only takes a few minutes.
Here's the link http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nookcolor-support-software-update/379002520/

Well, it was/is being delivered in a rolling update, meaning that you're more-or-less put in a queue by BN. Once the update is received by the NC, it won't be /installed/ until the device is idle. The NC also needs to be registered with BN in order to receive the update.
From the BN FAQ:
The software will be downloaded to your device in a rolling update over the next few days and automatically install when the device is idle. Once the update has been installed, you'll see a small green 'n' on the status bar.

[warning] ota update!!!

So today I was at work and a little notification popped up about a software update. I just left it alone and went on with work. I come back from lunch and it updated itself and disabled all my apps and root. The SD nethod with Nooter does NOT work. The software version showed 1.0.1. I ended up returning the Nook as its pretty useless with no root & 3rd party apps for me. I will be waiting and seeing where this all pans out as more people get the OTA. Good luck!

I haven't gotten any notification of an update and I've been using the wifi all day. Don't see anything about an update on the Barnes and Noble site or community forums.
Not saying it doesn't exist. But if so, it's quite odd for them not to officially announce it the way they do for the original Nook firmware updates.
Keeping my WiFi off for the time being though.
This is definitely not good news. Can someone else confirm this firmware update ? B&N is not showing any updates on their website and the community forum over there is not indicating anything either. Haven't heard anything over on MobileRead.com forums either. I'd imagine that someone else would've gotten this update by now (either rooted or not) and reported it.
I'm wondering if mine just happened to get caught in a glitch in their system. Like how some Android phones got updated randomly before others. Your guess is a good as mine. I guess we will see if anyone else got hit too.
Any idea of where it saved it to? If this comes down the pipe, I'd like to pull it apart for a look at what they did
Those bastards
Maybe its time to edit the host file to prevent NC from calling home?

Do we know what domain the updates are coming from?
There are some instructions for blocking updates here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860480
But as the author says, they may not work (read the thread).
The best option is to flash a new rom probably and it looks like good progress is being made there.
houseofbugs: Did you get a notification before reboot? My guess would be that these updates are installed from recovery, so there may be an interim solution to delete the file from internal memory if you get a notice.
Far from perfect, but better than nothing.
So nobody else has received this update ? I Googled for any info, checked out the BN forums and another forum dedicated to the NC and nobody else has reported any kind of software update.
Just as a precaution I called my gf and had her turn off my nook and turn off wifi on hers, not looking forward to going home and finding root has been broken. Don't like the fact that it force updates itself without user interaction too, from what I gathered from the op's post. OTACerts.zip doesn't do anything on the nook?

If the Op didn't mess with the OTACerts.zip, then we wouldn't know. Op, did you disable updates as suggested in the thread above?
I haven't seen any "update" messages on mine. I double-checked and my NC is still running version 1.0.0. My wifi has been on for the past couple days (including all night last night) and I've seen nothing suggesting a firmware update.
Maybe I'm lucky. Looks like B&N may be planning to force a firmware update soon. It'd be nice if they gave us the option to decline it (they'll probably strip in-Store features without the most current version, but I've read here that rooting does away with in-Store features anyway).
There's another thread over in NC Android Dev where someone got a firmware update scare. Looks like a false-positive, but it's something to keep us on our toes.
Hmm no updates here either..
nothing...
I remember reading that someone else got an Update Available notification in the huge thread that started this forum. I think they said they did a system restore to factory and it allowed them to re-root it, but I don't recall if it had a version number in it. Same thing happened, nobody knew what was going on.
Regardless, we should eliminate the ability for B&N to apply automatic updates at will.
After un-rooting and resetting back to factory fresh settings, the Nook DID download an update, version 1.0.0.0. The notice appeared in the notification area.
The good news is that I am still able to root using the nooter method.

That's not an update, it's an improper notification. It hasn't been *updated* to anything, since that's what it came with stock. It's just the nook's way of saying it's been reset to defaults.
Hopefully the update is not rolling out...
...but if it is I hope it hits my NC after this weekend when I have to take my son from the USA to the UK! Two flights and two airports without Angry Birds to keep him happy would be unpleasant.
Hmmm...
OTAcerts.zip would be my usual suggestion, for this kind of thing.
If anyone gets the nook with the update, try and grab the URL of the update via logcat.
Failing that, someone with the update might need to try things to get it rooted RageAgainstTheCage, anyone?
I don't know what you specifically need for the nook to let you sideload etc, but RageAgainstTheCage would make sense to work and get at least shell root.

Root 1.0.1 NC downgraded itself to 1.0

Turned on the screen of my rooted 1.0.1 NC this morning finding a notification saying that the software has been "updated" to 1.0. Now it just keeps bootlooping.
Only setting that was different from the other nights was that the the WiFi sleep policy was changed to NEVER in Spare Parts.
Any idea as to why this happened? Looks like I will have to reset, update and root again.
Did you block OTA updates?
Homer
I believe the auto nooter does that for you?
I don't think so. Look in /etc/security for the file otacerts.zip to check. If it is still there, do a search for blocking ota updates. It is possible that was the culprit. Another possibility is that you had an authentication error. Have you done any restoring of system apps/data?
Homer
Sent from the XDA app on my NC (1.0.1 w/A-n 2.12.25)
If not blocking the OTA setting was indeed the culprit (even though I was already on 1.0.1), I think A LOT more people would have this issue.
I went through and did the whole rooting process all over again. Hopefully clockwork recovery will be available soon. Just don't want people to have the same problem as I did.
I had the same issue & it went into a partial cycling reboot mode where it would begin spelling out "nook color" then show the big 'n' n then the colors would ripple & when that stopped it would start the cycle over. Eventually it did the update back to 1.0.0 & I was able to reset & unroot.
A replacement NC is on its way to my house.
BTW the update back to 1.0.0 happened both before & after rooting with auto-nooter.

update for nook

B and n tried to send out an update over the air....anyone know what its about?
afraid it'll mess my rooted book up
I have the 1.0.1 update already and rooted it with nooter
Did you already have the 1.0.1 update installed?
Nothing new about an update on B&N forums or their nook color update page.
This is 1.5. Just getting ready to insert card into nook to root. Maybe I should wait.
I just got an update notice also. I already have 1.01 so not sure what the update was for. I said not now so I should get the notice again later. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke and its actually 2.2!!!!

I have 1.01 as well and received an update notice somewhere between 1'00 and 1:30 Central Time.
Yeah that was prob around the time I got mine. Was just about to start reading before I go to bed. Now i can't sleep cause I'm trying to figure out what kind of update it was!!
Sent from my Nook Color
Can the next person to get this PLEASE accept it...
It would be interesting to see what the update actually is
If i get it again ill accept it. Since nobody knows what it is I might as well. I just figured I would do some research and see if anybody else had already dl'ed it yet.

I don't recall accepting an update, but something messed up my nook while I wasn't using it, and it fits the timeline of this update. I had to enter recovery and things seem to be working alright. I would advise that people make a recent backup just in case something similar happens to them. Definitely upset that I lost most of my recent changes.
Hey something defenently trying to get through I am getting a meesage of something is wrong in your nook and system restarts and wides data and cache...
No updates though.
I have reverted to stock 1.0.1 using the 8 failed boot sequence and waiting to see what comes through ...
I left a stock 1.01 NookColor on over night and I didn't see a new firmware push. But then I never got the 1.01 firmware either, I had to manually download and install it I didn't see anything on B&N's update site either. I'm curious to see what it is.

The only Nook with a v. 1.5 is Nook Klassic. As far as NC is concerned, I have also received several "update" notices for NC - the green "N" at the bottom left - even though I've already updated manually to 1.0.1 so I could AutoNooter 2.12.25. Ignore these messages. You're already up to date.
Later!

I'm like gedster314, I left NC #2 on w/WiFi overnight w/charging and had WiFi on for 2-3d IIRC while using it and NEVER got an OTA update notice, so I also ended up manually upgrading it to 1.01.
I haven't noticed any update notices on mine, but I mostly have WiFi off to help extend batt runtime since the batt life isn't so hot... (or maybe I've just been spoiled by my gTab batt runtime w/WiFi running nearly constantly...)

Still 1.0.0, never got anything pushed - Anybody else?

I've had my nook color since when they came out, rooted it immediately, and have rebuilt it a dozen times at first. I've never had 1.0.1 pushed, never had 1.1 pushed, and keep reading about others who are.. The NC is connected almost all of the time, either at my work or home wifi connection or on the road, via tethering.
Anybody else not getting updates? (..and I'm certainly not complaining, just curious)
I'm still on 1.0.0 as well. Never did anything to block updates, and I'm frequently connected to wifi either at my university or at home. Have been inside a B&N with wi-fi maybe on a bunch of times.
Ya all my NC's I have touched, mine, my best friends, and including my parents that just came in today all had 1.0.0 on them, mind you I manually upgraded them to 1.0.1 but no OTA period on any of them.
I never got the push either. Glad I didn't actually.
I've had my NC for a week.. I manually updated to 1.0.1, rooted, later went back to stock, and manually updated to 1.0.. I went back to stock (1.0.0) yesterday.. I went to my local B&N a few hours ago, and then I notice the green 'n'.. I thought that 1.1.0 had been automatically pushed.. when I clicked the 'n', it said.. You have been updated to 1.0.0'! I went to settings -> about your nook, and sure enough, version is 1.0.0!
I thought this is really weird.. Operation is normal, no pinch + zoom in browser, so I think indeed it is 1.0.0 still..
Never got pushed to mine either. I finally just manually updated
No manual updates on my 1.0.0 either. I've disabled OTA certs and have aa profile to turn off wifi when the NC is sleeping.
Sent from my Nook Color
I couldn't even update to 1.1.0 manually by downloading the update package and copying it onto the root. Media scan happens with occasional reboot but still on 1.0.0
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
No push for me...but I never got the original update either...
I never got the update notification either. I manually updated last night and did both the otacert and mod through sqlite to disable updates.
Performance improvement was already noticeable on 1.1.0 even before I flashed the 1.1MHz kernel.

how did you update your nook manually?
There's a link at nookdevs (I would include it but don't have 8 posts yet) that will show you how to update manually to 1.0.1. Mine also never updated automatically so that's what I did. I assume it's something similar for 1.1 but I did a sideload update on mine so I'm not sure

Download either,
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.0.1/Sideload_update.zip
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.1/Sideload_update.zip
With your Nook Color on and connected, plug the USB cable to your computer. Your Nook Color will mount a drive on your My Computer with something like 5GB. Copy the Sideload_update.zip there. Unplug the USB cable from your computer and plug it to the power outlet. Turn your Nook Color off. After a few minutes it will automatically update so just wait till it's finish.
I've never got update over the air and got tired of waiting.

Moto X - ATT - 4.4 Update Stuck

I setup my wifes phone yesterday and then thought to check for the 4.4 update. Right now nothing appears to be happening. When I check for the update manually it says that there is an update already downloading and that I will be notified when complete. However, there is nothing in the notification tray to suggest anything is happening. This morning I woke up to a message saying that the download will complete once on wifi (but the phone was on wifi and working properly). That notification is now gone and same problem persists.
I've tried the obvious so far: Restart phone, try update using the Moto software via USB.
Level 1 tech support wants me to do a factory reset. Hoping to avoid that and the hour+ of setting up the phone again. Any thoughts? My phone is not rooted nor do I have plans to do so...
Since nobody seems to have any thoughts on this I decided to go ahead and factory reset the phone. Same exact symptom as before. Phone tells me there is an update available, I click download, nothing happens. Check the status a bit later and it says that an update is already in progress.
I'm starting to think that it's a problem with Recovery. Is it possible that these things will function normally with a broken or no recovery present? Went into fastboot and selected recovery. Instead of getting a factory reset I got a 'no command' error. Can't imagine it's possible to flash stock recovery if it's not rooted.

That's stock recovery, I think you need to hold down the volume button and then the power button and release, it should boot into recovery.

Hello,
I FINALLY convinced my wife to go Android. Got Nexus 7 2013 in August and she's gotten used to it. She's been IOS forever. So, her new moto x arrived Friday and we setup yestersday. Since she is OK with Nexus, the moto X will be good for her to move to. All is good EXCEPT the updates didn't download for some reason on activation yesterday. It showed it was downloading but to re-activate wifi. But, it was on?!!! Anyhow, she comes home today from her first full day at work with Triangle in notification bar to turn on wifi to download update. It's been over an hour with no movement and no status bar showing it's begun the download. I keep clicking for "system update" but says it's downloading... Status bar shows nothing other than update is ready and turn-on wifi.
Sounds like same issue as original poster. So far, wife is not happy with Android and her battery meter jumps all over place from 5% to 100%. Tempted to do factory reset but not a good way to start off as OP mentioned.
Any ideas or updates? Thanks

It seems like a dodgy or slow internet connection to me. Since you're still in download phase of the update, I don't think the problem is related to Recovery.

Wifi is not the problem. The internet is cranking and when I did the factory update it chewed through 20+ app updates in no time at all. Motorola has no idea how to help me... they just want me to send it in for repair. Such crap. I would love to try flashing stock firmware but can't seem to find any links that work.
Found the firmware. It appears my phone has the oldest build listed 139.9.51. Would it be okay to flash new build of 139.12.54?

I don't know what firmware she has. I'll have to check tonight when she gets home. Can you re-post the link?... it seems it didn't post it on the thread.

I think this is likely a temporary fix. I figure there is bound to be at least one or two more OTA's well within the warranty period... so I'll found out then if there is some other problem that needs to be addressed. Right now when I check for an update it simply says that the phone is up-to-date.
4.4.2 should be around the corner I think...

I did originally flash 4.2 (139.12.54) to test that very thing. The OTA had the same problem. Like I said, I think

Maybe it's a problem with the Motorola update servers...
I'm thinking that's probably the case since the cyber Monday promotion probably slammed them.
Glad to hear it's not just two of us..but still.... Sorry to hear of your problem too. Keep us posted.
Update on my wife's moto X. Still no update has been downloaded. She came home last night from work turn on wifi with triangle in notification. It said I have to turn on wifi to start download. It was already on have been on for a long time. So after a while I started to hit the Check Update button and also cleared the popup message telling me that one was being downloaded. (It's not) Did that routine several times. It did look like some WiFi activity was occurring based on WiFi x in symbol..but nothing. The message in notification eventually changed to the download status bar but stayed a 0 %
So, same story since initial setup on Sunday. Bummer. Not going to fiddle with any hackery. It should just work like my X does which is why she wanted it in first place and left Apple.
Will keep all updated.
