I just got my "new" nook and tried to boot Froyo 0.6.8 from an SD card. It just gets stuck at the blue ANDROID_ screen. I tried Froyo 0.6.7 and redoing 0.6.8 but it never got past ANDROID_. I'm using a new Transcend 4GB class 6 card. I first tried writing it using WinImage and my laptop's built in card reader, but when that card didn't boot I tried using a USB card reader and Win32diskimager. The Nook came with 1.1 on it and I haven't done anything to the internal rom.
Any ideas? How long should it stay on the Android_ screen if its working?
Did you figure this out?
This sounds like the classic failure described with 16GB cards on multiple threads. There's a nice consolidated thread on cards that are known to work. I'd check that. I have froyo working beuatifully on an 8Gb class6 transcend card.
Most likely you have some glitch on the card. I would do a complete deep wipe of the card (e.g. using SDformatter, all options). Then reflash with win32diskimager, then expand the SDcard partition with EASUS
it should boot in a couple of minutes tops the first time round.
I looked at those threads about cards before I bought one and the Transcend 4gb, class 6 I got is one that seemed to work.
I haven't been able to get the nook to boot off any card. I tried doing the format suggested and tried another 1gb PNY card with the bootable clockwork. I've tried writing with the internal SD writer in my laptop and with a Kodak (sakar) usb writer and with Win32DiskImager and WinImage.
I suppose the USB writer I have might not be good, but I don't want to get another one without knowing its one that works. So far I don't know whether the problem is with the cards I'm writing or for some reason this nook won't boot off SD card.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I probably had a flaky 4gb card. Now it won't format or write whatever I do.
dumb Q, but is the 1gb card you ahve also flaky now too... in which case it might well be the reader?
Will your nook stock OS read the SD card? (e.g. throw some photos ont here and see if the nook will show them) that way eliminate the nook.
There's some older threads that suggest first formatting the SD card with the nook stock OS, but I've never needed to do that.
I'd persevere - there's definately some plusses of froyo over the rooted B&N (especially if you use adhoc networks a lot), and you absolutely need nookie froyo as a backup incase you fry something when you take the plunge to CM7 (which is phenomenal, despite being so early in its release)
The 1gb I borrowed seems ok. I managed to boot a card with a bootable clockwork on it. I didn't do anything to Nook stock OS yet. I want to be clear that I can recover if I do first. I did get another reader, but I think it was probably the card. I wasn't able to boot of the 1gb at first because I was making a mistake in unzipping the .tar.gz files.
Do you have any pointers of where to find out about how to use Clockwork recovery?
I am using 0.6.7 on a 8gb class 6 Transcend... it's working great, no issues with booting.
Does anyone know if there is a SD Card runnable image of CM7 for the Nook? I don't want to root my Nook instead I am running the SD Card image OS at boot. I am currently running Honeycomb and while I like it I wanted to try CM7 before I get settled on a base ROM. that said does anyone know if one is available or how I could go about setting one up on my SD card?
Thanks,
Adan
There was talk of one in this thread:

Guess it didn't work or mckooter didn't get to it yet.
I want to root my Nook 1.1.0 but it looks like it doesn't boot from SD card.
I tried couple SDs (2Gb and 4Gb) and burn them with couple images for Autonooter 3 (and 2 too as act of desperation).
I can see files on the SDs in Windows and in Nook.
I power off Nook completely with SD inside and plug it into the PC usb.
It supposed to run some script... I waited an hour and nothing happen.
Then Nook boots in regular Nook mode.
I assume that it's something with my SDs.
4Gb is class 4 SD. I burned it with different burner programs - result is the same.
Is there some way to determine that Nook boots from SD?
Maybe MBR is erased or something like this?
I formatted card in Windows and never did it in Nook.
So, I hope MBR (is it even used?) is OK but I want to be sure somehow.
Any suggestions?
What software are you using to burn the image onto the sd card?
You should be using winimage running in administrator mode.

Um you say the nook didn't do anything and then booted normally..... that sounds like it did everything right. Autonooter dose not show anything on the screen when you boot from it. you will get a blank screen for a bit and then it will boot to normal..... Have you checked to see if your nook is rooted?
I used winimage. I can see files in Windows and Nook.
Funny thing is that *.img file is so big but real files on SD are small.
I assume it's empty space what is in img file.

I assume it should show some Android stuff. Correct?
What I see is regular Nook screens.
therealguppy has a point. You may be rooted and not know it yet. Go into the apps drawer and look for the super user app. If it's there, you're rooted. Autonooter doesn't change your launcher or anything else so obvious.

You mean EXTRAS?
There is nothing new here. 8 apps from Chess to Sudoku.
No super user app.
hmmmm... that is strange. As unlikely as you may think it would be, you must have goofed up a step. The nook color is, by way of hardware, hard-coded to boot to the Micro SD-card if a bootable partition exists.
It's crazy unlikely that your nook is somehow flawed and cannot boot to a sd-card.
I would first try and download and burn one of the SD-card bootable roms just to make sure that you are able to boot off of it.
Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989637
OR
Burn a bootable Clockworkmod SD-card to also test that you're able to boot.
go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870
and get one of the "Download a bootable Clockwork SD card (128mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb) here:"
If you want another set of step-by-step instructions, I have the time to write one up.
hi, im having the same problem as akizub and i think it may be booting from the sd card. ive tried rooting from all the different firmwares, ive tried different images, winimage, win32diskimage, ubuntu dd, ive even tried buying a new micro sd. i cant figure out whats wrong. ive seen all the youtube videos and instructions
Same Problem here with 1.1/auto-nooter 3.0.0
I'm having the same problem.
Don't think it's an issue with the SD card as I can see the SD files from the Nook after it boots
Wrote the SD using Win32diskimager. This must be working as I can see the files on the SD on both the Nook and the PC. Don't see how a block copy can miss anything!
I'm using auto-nooter 3.0.0
The Nook nook boot looks identical with or without the SD.
Maybe another level of security by BN ?
Just a crazy thought....are you making sure to have the correct versions?
Autonooter 3 NEEDS to be run on stock 1.1.... not 1.0.1 or 1.0.0.
Just thinking that would explain things.
Sent from my rooted stock 1.1 Nook with XDA Premium.
When all else fails, RTFM.
Versions OK
Yep .. Nook is at 1.1.0. autonooter 3.0.0
SD card is a 4GB SanDisk which other people seem to have used.
I'm assuming there is a low level loader in the Nook that attempts to load a boot block in a certain device order. Is it possible they changed that?
Yeah I am running into the same problem, I returned my nook for a few defects and now my new one won't boot from the sd card. Its running 1.1.0... one thing I have noticed that is different is that it seems to boot up faster than my old one did...
Edit:
Its working now, it wasn't partitioning the sd card for boot, was using my phone as card reader, switch to an actual card reader and new sd card and it worked.
Problem was solved.
It was fact that my SD was not bootable.
I tried something simple and reliable like CW recovery. Win32diskimager didn't want to burn disk complaining that it was too small. I tried to burn 1Gb to 2Gb, 4Gb and 16 Gb SDs and it was telling me - not enough disk space.
Then I used winiamge and was fine.
After I saw that CW was booting fine I burned autonooker again and then it started to work.
So, make sure that your SD is bootable by doing some simple and reliable image burning.
Hi everybody:
Now I have installed hybrid CM10.1 on Nook HD in a 8G TF card. Then I would like to replace it with a new 32G card.
My question is how to transfer all the data, use the extra space and does not broke the system.
Thanks
Use win32diskimager to read the 8GB card to a file. The file will be 8GB. Then use win32diskimager to write that file to your new 32GB card. Then use partitioning software like Mini-Tool Partition Wizard to expand the last partition to the full size of the card.
The data on internal memory will remain and be unchanged. You should be able to boot the new SD just like it was the old one. The only difference will be your CM10SDCARD will be much larger.

If I use the win32diskimager utility to read my working 8GB MicroSD Class4 card it sees nothing because using read will only accept IMG files. There must be something that I am missing here, so please fill in the missing details.
I was going to post an image I created using Snagit of what I see when I attempt what you suggested, but the forum software won't let me.
I plan on trying a clone operation with GParted from the working 8GB SD card to the 32Gb SDHC card. I will post my results here

I had made an empty ".txt" file, then rename it to ".img". It may solve the problem.

Just type in a name. Like 8GB.img in the box. You do not have to actually create the file first, win32diskimager will create it. Then after it is done reading that write it back to your new card.

OK. Thanks. I am giving that a shot. I am going to try it on the Sandisk 16GB class 4 card first and then on the Samsung 32 GB class 6 unit. I will post my results here.
The results were negative with theSandisk 16 GB class 4 and Samsung 32GB class 6 HDSC cards. The 32 GB card went into a loop with the appearance of the CWM graphics and back to the initial Nook image. I let it cycle perhaps 10 times. I then tried the 16 GB card and had the same results.

Since that did not seem to work for you, another option is to make a nandroid backup with your old card to internal memory. You might also want to save your files that you have on CM10SDCARD. Then reburn the new card, let it set itself up, flash CM, the converter and gapps to it. Then before you reboot, restore the backup you made earlier. It should then be set up the same when you reboot. Then restore your CM10SDCARD files.

What do you mean it didn't work? Where did it fail? During backup, during new SD creation or restore?
Edit: If somewhere along the line of your trying to fix this, you installed a new image to a card and booted with it before you did a nandroid backup of your old card, you wiped out the internal /data for the old card and it is not retrievable. If you did that, you just have to start over.

I followed your advice exactly. It appeared to work the same way that it did with the working 8GB SDHC card. I still have a nandroid backup of the old card on my PC. It just doesn't work on the two higher capacity SD cards I have. I see that I am going to have to look through the list and find the exact model of a 32 GB card that someone got working. It works fine on the Sandisk 8GB Class 4 card. The two Samsung cards (class 6) of 16 & 32 GB capacity that I own don't work. They are OK for storage use, but trying to install Android on them was a waste of time. I tried so many times. I used your tutorials and others tutorials unsuccessfully. A bum SD card is a bum SD card. I am not exactly a newbie at installing ROMs on devices . I have been doing it on my HTC Desire HD for about a year ever since HTC abandoned us and decided to not give us ICS or Jellybean for our expensive devices. I have Venom DHD on my HTC Desire HD at the moment. I am waiting for my new Samsung Galaxy s4 to arrive this week.
So I'm trying to follow everything from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38153094#post38153094 and I got lost at the part where I have to burn the image. When I burn it basically repartitioned my 8gig sd card down to 120mbs... What am I doing wrong? I don't know if I need to burn cwm first or if it's included there?

That is what it is supposed to do, be 120 MB. And that 120Mb includes the CWM so you can flash the CM ROM. When you boot it in the nook, it further partitions it so that CM can be installed on the SD. Don't worry, the rest of your 8GB will be available.

Thanks but how am I supposed to copy the cm10 zip file and gapps/converter file if they wont fit onto it? Also do I just insert the sd card in and then it automatically reformats it and then I'm supposed to plug it back into my pc drag the cm10 files and then put it back into the nook again? Forgive my ignorance I really want to try this out though! I also forgot to mention that I haven't done anything with my nook, it's non rooted and then only thing I've done is sideloaded the playstore on there, that's it. My nook is completely stock.

I'm not sure you read my instructions. I said to put the CM zip, gapps zip and converter zip on the internal media SD built into the nook, not on the external SD inserted into your PC. So it does not matter if the SD is only 120 MB, you are copying nothing there. Just download the zips with stock to internal SD or hook your cable to the PC with stock booted and copy to internal SD.
EDIT: I just edited the OP to clarify all this.

Oh no I figured it out!!! I thought I deleted that comment I didnt want to embarrass myself.. I have another question, I'm using an 8gig card, but I want to get a 64gib card, what should I do when I get the new card, reburn and do the same steps? Thank you for replying to my question so quickly you're ****ing awesome! Wow I'm just messing around with cm10, it's like a new tablet, holy ****. Sketchbook pro appears to have less latency, finally I can draw! So what else is possible with cm10 now, what do you like about cm10 that wasn't possible before? Also what build prop is the tablet being seen as now?

If you want to move to a larger card, use win32diskimager to read the 8GB card to a file. The file will be 8GB. Then use win32diskimager to write that file to your new 64GB card. Then use partitioning software like Mini-Tool Partition Wizard to expand the last partition to the full size of the card.
The build prop is set as a B&N Nook HD.
