Hi all,
my phone just shat itself today.
Running cognition 2.3b6
Symptoms:
Yesterday, started doing a few reboots by itself (i was switching landscape and back while going to apps/settings, things started lagging and then u'd see the cognition bootup screen).. only happened twice. first times in 4 months of use.
This morning, it did the same thing and reset. so i pulled the battery, and thought id give it a proper reset.
On bootup i saw some things crash (clock/finance/reader) etc.. i thought yeh ok. whatever.. and then the market suddenly updated all these apps (maps/gmail/voice search etc..) all of which should've been up to date.
thought that was wierd, android market went back to old non-green market. and now most 3rd party apps crash when i open them. i.e. astrid/astro/google reader/ any game
things like maps/gmail/browser etc.. work fine.. i notice my ram is up at 230mb/304mb is this causing the crashing?
So i've rebooted a few times and still the same issue (although market has gone back to green market)
anyone seen something similar? i really dont want to reinstall as this rom has been great till this point.. sigh... really reminds me of windows back in the older days.
thanks in advance for the help.
What kernel are you using?
I think you are going to have to flash stock master clear, start over
kernal? to be honest, no idea.. i just flashed from jh7 back to stock (ji6 i think) to 2.3b6
kernal looks to be
2.6.32.9

Jf6 ji6 is leaked froyo
Pm me if you need help
yeh sorry JF6, that odin guy is what i use every time..
i'm just wondering what could've caused it? how can a crash totally disable nearly everything..
i'll reflash using the odin3 back to stock then back to 2.3b8 i guess now.. but if anyone knows how to save it please let me know.
Do you know what lash fix you are running?
Sound like data corruption but it had never happened to me
lash fix?
last fix?
what do you mean by that?

Lag Fix is what he ment. If i remember right the older vodoo lag fixes that were used in the older kernel versions had stability problems that have been fixed in the newer versions.
oh i c.. its the voodoo from 2.3b6..
i've just privacy-> factory wiped my phone. and that seems to have fixed it..
tho i might as well upgrade to 2.3b8 to see if it helps
I'm not sure what the source of the problem is, but WiFi is slower than 3g and doesn't maintain a stable connection even though I'm 50 feet from the router. I have Cog v3.04 and Firebird Kernal v2.05. I just installed the KP1 modem, but I had these issues before that. Any suggestions?
run a speedtest.net on your pc. Make sure your getting decent bandwidth.
do you have cable or DSL?
What speed?
also.
delete network
reboot router/modem
restart phone
re add network
&& possibly try changing wireless frequency on router, maybe there is a lot of interfearence or something.
I've had something similar with the latest Cognition release (cog kernel and modem as well). My Wifi connects and works for webpages but won't download apps from the market or other files. It uploads files to dropbox fine. Any help is appreciated. And I'm getting ready to flash the kernel to SpeedMod and use a i9000 modem to see if it's any better.
dont you have to run a radio thats consistent with the kernal/rom? i thought to run i9000 id need a rom/kernal based on the i9000 firmware...
I'm running Cog 3.04, SpeedMod K12r – 500hz (SpeedMod installed with Odin is the only installation that does not quickly drain battery for me), and JL3 modem. Everything is working great and fantastic battery life!
I'm also playing around with Cog 3.04 at the moment with this issue -- no wifi internet. No, it's not the router, there are multiple LANs around in my area and I was connecting and using them just fine on stock Froyo + Captivate Voodoo + JI6 modem. It's definitely something that came up after installing Cog.
I think the general rule of thumb says that you shouldn't mix and match, but so far, the JI6 and JJ4 modems have not given me any Wifi connection (the phone says it will connect, but no internet services work).
Meanwhile the JK4 modem for I9000 works, it will connect to LANs and let me browse to pages, although it's a little slow.
As of this typing I *just* tried out JL3, but the result is no good. I can load Google.com and nothing else.
I'm wary of trying the XXJP* modems due to changing bands (I'm no expert) but if nothing else works (or JK4 breaks) then it'll be on the table.
Is there anything else we can change aside from modems and kernels? I like how fast Cog is but if I can't get Wifi then I have to go back to stock Froyo.
Edit: Just tried out the Firebird 2 kernel. Wifi with the JI6 modem is back! Albeit slow. Battery life is also depleting VERY quickly. JJ4, JL3 still no good; JK4 works and is very fast, however internet only works with one wireless network, which happens to be unencrypted. Now going back to the original Cog 3.04 kernel, see if I can get any more data.
ive recently installed the cog 3.04 rom on mine.. currently deployed and can only use it with the wifi and so far, have not really noticed any issues.. i can download from the market and access the wifi's as needed.. only thing is sometimes it will disconnect when the phone locks, but when i unlock, it logs back on.. but that is about it for me.. so far loving it..still too new at the phone to really know much though
Ok, I think I may have found what I did wrong.
I used Titanium Backup to backup ALL of my system data from the leaked Froyo install, and restored it to the Cog install once it finished. I just re-flashed Cog to my phone (from leaked JI6 Froyo) WITHOUT restoring system data -- I only restored user apps and user app data this time. Tentatively, I seem to have Wifi working on all available LANs! Haven't changed a thing from the Cog install (using the modem that came with it, etc.) and all seems to be good.
Sad thing is, I think DG's page on Cog 3.04 specifically mentioned we shouldn't restore all system data after flashing. So for anyone else having Wifi troubles, you might want to make sure you didn't restore everything from your old ROM.
yeh.. i believe they changed it to do the restore missing apps and data instead of restore all apps and data... the video linked on their to show how to flash cog 3 has the guy telling you to restore all but once he made the video, he went in and put a splash on the screen for a correction to only do the missing apps + data and not restore all as it is known to cause issues
Actually, a correction on my part: Wifi's dead again. Seems to work for a few minutes at a time. Not sure what to do, going back to normal Froyo for a spell then...
I too am having issues with wifi on Cognition v3.04, I did not restore any data from my previous ROM.
I simply copied the rom (.zip) to my internal SD and used Clockwork rom manager to reboot and install from sd card. The wifi seems to be intermittent.
I will be following this thread to see if there is a fix.
Cognition 3.04 ROM and the firebird kernel
i would like 2 use this combo but i read they drain batt like crazy.
would like 2 know if anyone has found a combo that fixs this.
I have been running the cognition 3.04 rom for a few days, every thing works perfect with flash from stock 2.1. btw great rom i love it thanks for this rom.
Cognition 3.04 ROM stock kernel
hopeing for firebird read nothing but great things about it.
Edit: Nevermind, wifi eventually broke again.
This took several tries, but the procedure that finally let it work for about 12 hours follows.
I flashed back to JF6, used Odin to Master Clear, then installed ROM Manager from market. When flashing CWM, the phone went into 2e recovery of course, so I hit "reinstall packages" to flash CWM, but then it didn't update into CWM so I hit "reinstall packages" again, which gave me CWM recovery proper. Then reboot the phone, transfer the Cognition ZIP from computer to phone, then go into ROM Manager, and hit "Install ROM from SD Card".
I did NOT backup the stock JF6 rom, I DID wipe data and cache. Once the ROM was successfully flashed and rebooted, I checked Wifi -- nope, no good, wouldn't connect to any secured networks. It would connect and be able to use the one local unsecured network, but that was it. I went and retrieved a few Captivate-compatible kernels out of my computer:
Speedmod K12T
Firebird 2
supercurio's JJ4 Stock+Voodoo kernel
Rebooted into recovery, flashed over the Cog stock kernel WITHOUT converting the datasystem back to RFS (I left everything on EXT4 including /system), rebooted back into recovery, then wiped Dalvik cache and then wiped battery stats for good measure. Then rebooted normally.
Firebird did not give me the wifi result I wanted, I don't know why; Speedmod and supercurio's JJ4 Voodoo both fixed my wifi issue. Page loading is very snappy, the phone connects to and is able to use all the secured networks it sees and the only "issue" remaining is that it sucks up quite a bit of juice whenever it's connected to wifi. I don't know if this is the Cognition ROM or the JL1 modem causing it, but it's my only remaining quibble.

Now it's been a couple more hours and I am sad to report that the secured networks are once again unreachable on the JL1 modem, or any other that I have as far as I know. *Sigh* back to trying more things.
Edit 2: I have tried the "rm bcm_supp.conf" method of wiping wifi stats for a clean start, tried it on the stock Cog 3.04 kernel as well as the supercurio kernel. Doesn't fix the issue.
Edit 3: I dunno guys. I just did a fresh install again:
Flash back to JF6 Stock
Master Clear using Odin
One-click root
Move Cog 3.04 ZIP file to internal SD
Install ROM Manager
Flash CWM Recovery
"Reinstall packages"
"Reinstall packages"
In CWM recovery mode now, "install .zip from sdcard"
Choose the Cog 3.04 ZIP, install
Wipe Dalvik Cache, wipe battery stats
Boot

Click to collapse
Now I can connect to all the unsecured networks and ONE secured network. I'm willing to write off the other secured network that I can't connect to because it wasn't compatible with the stock 2.1 Eclair ROM either (i.e. some protocol is probably in error). Nonetheless, the connection seems very fragile and I wouldn't be surprised if I rebooted and suddenly lost the capability to connect to that one secured network. *Shrug*
I've found a robust, working workaround!
I think that something about flashing kernels via Clockworkmod Recovery may be what's breaking wifi -- I have no idea why, but I flashed SpeedMod K13A via CWM and I couldn't connect to anything, then immediately afterwards flashed the same K13A, but via Odin, and absolutely everything works! The cause may be a particular version of CWM, it could be that the CWM and Odin versions of kernels are different, I don't know jack about the innards of software. But if you're having Wifi troubles try flashing a kernel via Odin, then flash (by whatever means, I still use CWM) a compatible modem, and see if it works.
Right now, I have Cog 3.04 running with SpeedMod K13A and the JL2 modem -- very robust and quick connection, data flows fairly quickly as well (10Mbps down/up). Have tried several different I9000 modems since then and they all work. JL2, KP1, JP5, JL3, JK4 are the ones I have in my "stash", every single one works so I've pretty much ruled out the modem question.
Hope you guys can also get your Wifi fixed! As a starting point I'd definitely try SpeedMod (via Odin) + JL2, the two of them work very well together and it gives me the best Wifi, GPS, voice quality, smoothness and battery life out of all the combos I've tried so far.
Thanks color0, I am going to try this right now. Flashed to Cog 3.04 yesterday and my Wifi has been sporadic at best.
EDIT: Well I flashed the K13A speed mod using ODIN and I still have issues with my Apple Time Machine Router. It connects fine but I receive no data (always worked great in the past). The connection to my other router seems to be working ok though, let's see if it lasts.
I could not install the JL2 modem as I am on a SGH-i897 and I understand that is a I9000 modem.

Having same problems as you R.
Been pulling my hair out and flashing my ass off.
Only way I can get wifi to work is going back to stock.
Will try your work around and C if that helps
Thanks !
At work, we have 2 wifi networks : one is open, the other uses PEAP and MSCHAPV2 (?)
On my brand new (unflashed) Captivate I could connect to either one.
I flashed Cognition 3.04 and now I can connect to the open network, but not the PEAP secured one. There is an endless loop of scanning-> connecting -> disconnected, and the network appears as "disabled" after several attempts.
Unfortunately the open network has limitations, and requires a manual login.
I hope someone finds a fix, as I really like Cognition 3.04 so far.
I tried backdating the dhcpcd as mentioned in one of the developer threads, as well as re-booting, but that didn't help.

Mine is also an SGH-I897. The SpeedMod K13A, however, is a I9000-based kernel, so you SHOULD actually use an I9000 modem to pair with it. JL2 is one of the best ones available, JK4 is also tried-and-proven, but drains battery. KP1 works very fast but voice quality drops.
JS22, Tzabka, yep, this is the exact same problem for all three of our Captivates. I can't guarantee there isn't something else that might break Wifi for you guys, but I can report what is working for me now. Best of luck! Once we at least have Wifi we can start working on other things like voice quality and battery life (currently trying out BVJJPD, I've heard some great things about its power consumption).
OH OK great. Could you point me in the right direction for installing the JL2 modem, never installed a modem before. Can I just use Odin3?
Thanks!!!
I'd like to flash to Cog 3.04 directly if possible without Odin'ing back to 2.1. Is it ok to flash directly to 3.04 and if so, what the best way to wipe everything first to start form as blank a state as possible? I'm without a windows PC right now...
Thanks!
hate to bump but if anyone can provide a quick answer... thx.
I flashed 3.04 over 2b8 without any problem.....
You can try that but no guarantee that it will work.you may run into problems and have to flash back to odin then you will be sol with out a computer

You should be fine flashing from one version to another. If you enabled lagfix I'd disable that first, and to be on the safe side do a CWM backup, but other than that you should be fine. I've been flashing another ROM back and forth without going stock many times without issue.
You can go and flash custom ROMs on top of each other and it might work, but don't be surprised if you boot into Cog 3.04 and have to deal with a bunch of force closes or other weird behavior.
I ALWAYS recommend people flash back to stock and Master Clear/GSM Master Reset. That gives you a blank slate to work with. It takes less than 10 minutes, but some just believe that's too much work/time for them.
Your call.
I've never had an issue flashing updates on top of Cognition. I'm pretty sure as long as your lag fix is the same between versions then there should not be any problems.
I flashed serendipity 5.0 over 4.3 last night with no problems. I just disabled lagfix before I did.

Thanks everyone for your helpful input.
Is it possible to master clear without going back to stock? I'd like for everything except the external sdcard to be cleared.
I have a Captivate (model 1012) and was running Andromeda 3.
I guess the short version of this is as follows.
Wanted to flash back to stock Froyo from Andromeda.
First tried using Heimdall but failed 1/2 way through resulting in the dreaded Phone__!__PC icons.
Was unable to 3 button to download because my phone does not support it, so I used the 100K +1K ohm resistor "fix" which got me back into download mode.
Then used Odin3 One-click to reflash and applied the update.zip that it requested.
I am at the point where I can use Kies-mini to update to 2.2 which I have not done yet.
Everything is working just great except that when I make or receive a phone call, the person calling cannot hear me and I cannot here them.
It rings on an incoming call, I answer but I cant hear them and they cannot hear me.
One thing I do notice, is when I place a call and hit the speaker button, it turns green like the speaker is on, but I cannot hear it dialing like I used to.
After updating via Kies, the firmware version is 2.2 and baseband is I897uckb1.
Should I try to reflash or try a different modem?
Any suggestions?
Try re-downloading Odin 1click, verify the file size, then run it again. At that point, try the phone out to see if it has sound during calls.
I'm not sure why you're using Kies to go to 2.2....and your post is a little confusing. At one point you said you did not update to 2.2, then later you said it was on 2.2.
My bet is you just got a bad flash. Try it again, and you should be good to go. Heck, a factory reset might even do the trick.

The problem is your modem. Replace it with one that is not an i9000 modem

Yes I agree. Sounds more like a modem issue than anything else.
One way to test would be to flash back to Andromeda and see if things start working right.
Wouldn't the Odin1-click put everything on new? PRL, SBL, kernel, modem and ROM?

yes. but he didnt actually use the real one click, because he indicated that he had to use a .zip file for it.....
Thanks everyone for the help. Was able to flash back to Andromeda 3 and everything works just fine. Not sure what is going on with Odin.
I would like to try it again. Can anyone recomend a good stock modem to try for my I897 just in case I get stuck again? The Odin that I used was I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (the update.zip I think was just for CWM).
Again, thanks for all the input.
Hello.
I'm having almost this same problem, just that I actually can hear the other people talking but they can't hear me. This problem doesn't happen when I go back to stock Eclair, there I can normally make calls and talk, but when I flash any custom ROM (I've tried Serendipity, MIUI and Darky's) this issue appears again :S
Please help me I'm really starting to lose my head
PD: Sorry for my English.
Hi all,
I've been unable to find a post about this for quite some time so I decided to make a threat about it.
I have a recurring problem with my captivate. Usually after about 2 weeks of using a ROM my phone will have 2 issues pop up simultaneously. They seem to always happen together. It seems to happen after my phone shuts off and will not turn back on until I battery pull. Once I do that I am presented with these two issues:
1.) When I try and toggle Wifi it attempts to then simply says "error" underneath it. I have found a few threads about this but no answers
2.) Upon installation OR restoration of any app with Titanium Backup my phone does a soft reboot (goes to spinning CM logo or for ICS goes to the multicolored squares flying around).
Edit: On the newest MIUI it now says "insufficient storage available" instead of rebooting when I try to install an app after the issues crop up, wifi "error" is still the same
I've had these same 2 issues occur with CM7 Stable, RC, and many nightlies, MIUI, and TeamHacksung's ICS build. I believe it may have happened with cognition too but am not positive.
I do not restore any data with TB. Before each flash I wipe system, cache, dalvik, and do factory reset and still this issue occurs without fail after about 2 weeks on any ROM and the only fix I have is to flash a new one.
Nandroid backups DO fix the problem. If anyone is willing to look through logs or something and see what was different I would be eternally grateful and certainly send you something through PayPal
Any help is greatly appreciated and I am willing to try anything at this point. Thanks!

Nah this is the right place. That's a very strange problem you're having though, and I don't know what the exact solution is, if there even is one for this. The only thing I can suggest is going back to stock, and then reinstalling CM7 or whatever you want

Thanks,
Well happened again on newest MIUI. Gonna go back to stock and start over. I'll update the thread if it does or does not happen again.
Unfortunately after using Odin to go back to stock and rerooting/flashing it happened again on the most current build of MIUI. I'm currently at a loss for what to do. Has anyone heard of or seen anything like this?
Thanks in advance

Just curious, have you tried leaving it stock and seeing if it happens on a pure stock ROM? If so it could be a defect with the phone?
If you flash back to pure stock and the issue doesn't come back, maybe try a custom ROM that's closer to stock, not a CM or MIUI or ICS build. I haven't seen this issue, just trying to suggest some solutions.
I had this same problem with my fascinate. I flashed 1.10.21 MIUI follwed by glitch 13.1. This combination used to work, or so I thought. I flashed back to stock, 1.12.1 then a different package of glitch 13.1 and my wifi started working again. I know the captivates and fascinates are somewhat different, but try this out and see if it works.

I guess I could try that, I just like CM7/MIUI so much. Another thing that happens is many different applications start FCing after the problems all begin.
I tried to restore to a nandroid backup I had made before it happened this time and I received an MD5 mismatch which I believe happened last time I tried to restore...
New info:
I have not realized this before but it seems that I start getting a message that says, "Google Talk Authentication Failed", around the same time. Also FCs happen much more frequently. Is there anything I could be doing to cause this?
New Info
Just going to keep this updated with things I have tried in case anyone ever searches for this that has this issue:
Full format of SD card and odin back to stock did not prevent the issue from cropping up on the DarkKnight3 ROM with Icy Glitch. At this point I can only assume it is somehow hardware relatedl
