Trouble changing volume buttons - Nook Color General

I'm trying to change them with root explorer. I edit the "TWL4030_Keypad.kl" file to have 114 and 115 do menu and back. I saved it, rebooted and it's still volume. I also see some people say edit the "omap_twl4030keypad.kl" file but I can't find it. Is that why it's not working? Does anyone know where I can find the omap file?
Thanks guys.

ADB to the rescue!
Unless you are adamantly opposed, I would use ADB to remap the volume keys. The procedure is pretty straight forward and has worked for most people. Follow this process to the letter and it should work. Let me know if you have any problems and I'll try to assist.
EDIT: To answer your original question, yes, if you don't edit the omap file it will not work. It should be located in the same directory as the other file /system/usr/keylayout .

Try just editting "twl4030-keypad.kl" it should be lower caps btw, and qwerty.kl
Those are the only two that require editting.

Use adb, it makes everything much easier. And yes, edit both files, it seems to be very important!
Either way, one thing I can think of is that you didn't have MENU and BACK in uppercase? Other than that, I don't know what your problem might be. i did it yesterday with no problems.

I was able to pull the data, I edited the text, now when I try to remount etc.. I get the following error..
error: protocol fault (no status)
any ideas? I have checked and I am following the nookdevs instructions verbatim

I finally got it to work, had to use adb wireless...

Hi:
I used this file to increase volume on my Fuze. Seemed to work very well for me.
Hope this helps.
Just delete the file you have there, soft reset, and the original will come back by itself
Thanks for posting the files guys! I'm running RRE, and my mic is way out of whack. I've had many complaints of noise while I am on the line. I'm hoping that restoring my audiopara3.csv file will fix the problem. BUT, I am having serious problems extracting the file in order to synch it to my phone. Is there a trick that I'm missing? I can't even get the file to show up on my desktop after I move it. Should I only be replacing the audiopara3.csv file? Do the other audiopara files have any impact here? TIA guys. I really appreciate your responses.
Not sure if the audiopara has hidden/system attributes but to convert back to stock, del in windows dir and soft reset. The system will revert to stock settings.
BTW if you have one to play with just copy it from the SD to the windows dir using TotalCommander and leave AS alone.
Thanks tyguy. I am using total commander. I went and selected audiopara3.csv, but after I tell the phone to delete, it gives me a warning window:
Could not delete 1 file(s)!
Any idea what could be causing this to happen? From what I've been reading, it should be pretty easy to either overwrite / delete this file, so I don't know why I'm having so much trouble.
Most likely it is in use. Check the TC settings that you are permitted to see/access/delete system files.
Try to rename and delete
I'm running Total Commander/CE v2.51
The only TC settings I have are language settings.
I checked the file attributes for audiopara3.csv, and they are set to 'read only' and 'in ROM'. When I uncheck the read only and save, the next time i check the file properties, the check box reverts back to being selected. I might need to revert back to the stock ROM if I can't get this audio stuff to work.
I don't have the original anymore, but this one really helped, it's loud and no distortions. Unzip first.
squirrel, did you try to rename or move it using TC?
Worked for me all the time.
i get the same error when trying to rename, edit, or move.
I'm happy to be able to report some resolution. What I was able to do was copy the entire zip file to my phone with all the audiopara files that herg posted on the last page. Then, using totalcommander, I was able to extract the files one by one to the windows directory and overwrite the files. Thanks for all of your help guys! Everyone who had to put up with the static while talking to me sincerly appreciates it!

Copy and Paste not the same as Push?

I didn't feel like plugging my phone into the computer so I emailed myself an apk file (arctu's Mms.apk) because for some reason...it seems to revert back to stock every reboot...
Anyway, I didn't have any terminal apps so I used Root Explorer to copy then paste over the existing apk. didn't work. Why not? Is there a something different about copy/paste?
If you didn't say you mounted the partition I can only assume it was not mounted as r/w and still at r/o.
copy/paste - visual representation of cp
push - pushing files from computer to phone
They are not the same.

the mms app didn't overwrite. But it could have been user error. I'm using Enom's ROM and didn't have the Community Mms Mod checked...so maybe if I had done that first...it would have worked.
Pushing is taking a file from the computer to copy and paste/overwrite the existing file on the phone. What's the difference where the file is being copied over from? Are you sure about what you were trying to explain?

k?
I didn't try and explain anything (in this thread at least)?
Either way, yes push literally "pushes" a file to a specified location. However that file needs to be written and if the file system is mounted as read only you will get errors.
If it didn't work you must have received an error message (in root explorer for example), what was that message? If you don't get an error message and the file is still not being written then get a better file manager (ES File Explorer).
The suggestion above by 'evilkorn' was to make sure the file system is in read/write mode before you copy the file over... you can do this in Root Explorer or ES File Explorer.
If your file system is in r/w AND you still don't get an error message AND it still doesn't work then I would try an ADB push as a last resort and if that didn't work, reflash and start from step one I think...

Because that was your question in the title, which I answered, they are different terms for different things. You can't push a file on your phone to your phone, you copy it (cp).
You still didn't answer my question... It's hard to help someone when the suggestions fall on deaf ears and all you get is reverb and static back.

LoL. You gotta ask a question first before I can answer it. You made assumptions, didn't ask questions. LoL. Anyway, I wasn't trying to crawl under your skin. But maybe next time you can read the OP in addition to just reading the title of the thread? Usually, details are given to accompany the title of the thread on the first post. Either way, I guess I wasn't detailed enough. Thanks for your feedback, tho, appreciate it.
@djmcnz - Sorry, my error in quoting the wrong person. Thanks for you explanation, also.
So, to summarize...Push and Copy/Paste should produce the same outcome, right? Cool...like I said earlier...it was my error in not knowing that I had to use the Spare Parts option in Enom's ROM to enable Community MMS.
I use root explorer all the time when I can't use a computer to use adb. It works fine. Usually if its the system partition you have to click the icon that says r/o and it changes to r/w. This will allow you to write files to the partition. Then from what I noticed a reboot usually fixes any issues of stuff not working.

Need help but not enough posts to ask in correct section

Hello,
i dont have enough posts to post on the development side yet. And i was attempting to follow this post to block OTA's. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933291
I downloaded the sqlite3 binary, then used rootexplorer (mount R/W) to copy into /system/bin. From there do i just use Root Explorer to do the following?
/data/data/com.bn.devicemanager/databases/devicemanager.db
long press on devicemanger.bd
select edit with text
change "auto" to "manual"
save changes
reboot
this is what i tried but when i rebooted it didnt save. reverted back to auto. plus the code looked a bit different, instead of having a comma after "auto" it now has a capital "A". some of the other code looked different also. I deleted it and restored the original for now. but does anyone know what went wrong, im thinking its something to do with the sqlite3 binary.

I've yet to do this but from what I can gather you don't long press on devicemanager.bd You go into terminal (which if i remember correctly is under nook tools, I'm on froyo so i can't say exactly where it is) and then type the commands he listed.
You should be able to download a terminal from the market (just search terminal) if you can't find it

Block OTA (Beginners guide?)

adb shell, sqllite, build prop...Any other non-tech major people around here a little lost?
I'm rooted. I don't want the new update. I can follow directions but would be more comfortable if some basic instruction were written. Treat me like I'm 10.
It looks like the best way to do this is as follows:
"From this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874871
Attached is a working sqlite3 binary.
Copy it to /system/bin
(I transfered it to my SD, then used rootexplorer (mount R/W) to copy into /system/bin))
you will now be able to edit sqlite databases on the nook itself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attached Files sqlite3.7z (11.9 KB, 56 views)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In your terminal:
$ adb pull /data/data/com.bn.devicemanager/databases/devicemanager.db devicemanager.db
$ sqlite3 devicemanager.db
sqlite> update registry set value='manual' where name='com.bn.device.fota.mode';
sqlite> .q
$ adb push devicemanager.db /data/data/com.bn.devicemanager/databases/devicemanager.db
$ adb reboot
"
Do I unzip the attached binary and paste that into the location or the .zip as a whole? What do I use as a terminal?
I've been flashing my DROID since day one but the NC development circle has been far from entry level user-friendly. Any help would be appreciated.
you can do it on windows too.
1) pull/get/copy the.db file from your phone to your pc
2) update the database file using sqlitebrowser. I.e run the sql command "update ......". Close sqlitebrowser.
3)push/put/copy the updated .db file to the same location overwriting the original.

Progress. However...
I got SQLite on my PC. I found the devicemanager file on my NC, pasted it to my SD card for transfer over to my PC for editing. I trasnferred the file over to my PC for editing. I open SQLite but have no idea how to use it.
I just did this today using sqlite editor only!!! Its a GUI so it real simple to use.
1.Install the apk
2.reboot
3.go to extras and launch sqlite editor
4.allow it, give it the permision it needs
5.look for DeviceManagerService
6.click on devicemanager.db
7.click on registry
8.look for _id 7, name>>>> "com.bn.device.fota.mode"
9.scroll to the right and click and hold value field "auto", until a little pop up shows and select edit field
10. Change the value from auto to manual
11. Save
Done!!!
If you need the apk here is a link I just made
?d=LTSQDZ65 for megaupload (sure u guys can piece it together!)
Let me know if it helped anyone!
Yes, we totally need another thread on this. I must note that pushing the build.prop in my thread and my two Nook Colors have not updated. Dunno about this method or others. Caveat emptor!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. Very simple.

Thanks for breaking it down for us, nookme.
Do we need to do this if we are operating from an SD bootable Froyo or CM7 ROM?

In theory it should work for both, whether its a soft root mod or simply a bootable sd card that emulates froyo... It's a matter of just having root access and changing a registry setting on the device itself. Hope this shines some light! happy rooting ppl
Not noobie enough for me, sigh
So, if I have followed these directions from an earlier post have I messed something up? Not blocked updates at all? I don't understand the directions in this thread. What happens if I don't block the update? There must be a lot of people like me who had the technical skills to manage the root process but don't understand all of your coded instructions. I read in another thread that I should do a Titanium backup. How does that help after an update? Will market aps that have already been downloaded still work? Will everything revert to stock? Could someone explain what we should expect? Thanks!
To disable OTA (over the air) updates:
Change the name of this file: otacerts.zip to anything else
To do this, get root explorer ($3) from the market
Run root explorer
Go to etc/security/otacerts.zip
Hit the little mount button near the top to change r/w to r/o
Rename the file otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip_DISABLED_OTA_UPDATES
Hit the little mount button again to change r/o back to r/w

Just follow my steps... it works
I have had nothing but problems with my rooted NOOK Color due to B&N auto updates. I followed your instructions and now I hope my problems are resolved and my NOOK Color will never update again.

[MOD] Wake on Volume Keys via android.policy.jar

This has been bothering me for awhile now. I set the phone on the table and browse or read on it. The screen goes off and now I have to pick the phone up to wake it back up. Very irritating! I'd rather be able to press the volume keys and use the pattern lock than use the fingerprint reader, when I'm not holding the phone.
I decided I'd look into this tonight and actually it turns out it's very easy. The script took longer than figuring the mod itself. Surprise, surprise, the solution is in android.policy.jar again.
This mod will make pressing the volume keys wake the phone first, then subsequent presses will change volume as usual. I won't bother with a detailed how-to this time since I put some time into a fairly complete script, but for people who are curious, here are the details:
File: KeyguardViewMediator.smali
Method: private isWakeKeyWhenKeyguardShowing(I)Z
How: Delete cases 0x18 and 0x19 in the switch statement at the bottom of the method. These tell it to return true for volume up and down keys. Careful about changing the others. Some refer to non-existent buttons on the Atrix, but others (as I found out) affect your headset mic button and other events. For a detailed how-to on taking apart and putting together the android.policy.jar, please see this thread
The script is now universal, for all ROMs. OS X, Linux, Windows.
How does it do that? Like this:
1. It takes android.policy.jar directly from your phone.
2. Decompiles the jar.
3. Patches it.
4. Recompiles it.
5. Pushes the jar back onto your phone.
6. Cleans up and reboots the phone.
Some prerequisites before you run the script:
1. Obviously make sure you're backed up. You can't hard brick with this, but there is a possibility of soft brick if there's a bug. It should be safe because it checks for errors at nearly every command, but nevertheless have CWM ready. I have tested this on OS X and Windows. Linux users, you will need to test this yourself. It should be fine though, because you use the same script as OS X, but with a different adb. Just verify that the script and adb have the correct executable permissions, or chmod as necessary.
2. You must have java installed on your computer because it needs that to compile the android.policy.jar file. To check, you can type, "java" in a command line window. If you get a "no java command" type message, then java isn't installed correctly on your machine, or you need to add the path to java.exe to your path environment variable.
3. You must be deodexed.
4. Make sure to set your USB connection to "None" on your phone.
5. On your phone, go to Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB debugging is turned on.
6. Plug your phone into your PC and let it install any necessary drivers. (OS X users ignore this, Linux users... You're on your own )
7. Then you can run wakeonvolume.sh for OS X/Linux and wakeonvolume.bat for windows.
* Thanks to natboy for solving the script issue for XP users!

Worked for me, just make sure you run batch as admin and put it on the root of the C drive.
Looks like for one thing the script is using CHOICE which isn't available in Windows XP/NT. It was in MS-DOS and in Vista/Win 7.
I'm supplying the CHOICE.COM that came with the MSDOS supplement disks. You can google it and download it straight from Microsoft, so there shouldn't be any problems here. Unzip it and put it in the same directory the batch file is in. Also modify the batch file on the 12th line instead of choice /c 1234 put:
choice /C:1234
Edit: I haven't actually tried this yet, but that should get it going. Will try in a few..
Edit 2: This should only be needed if you're running WinXP/NT. I'm assuming it works under Win7 already.
Edit 3: It works! Once I added the choice.com file and modified the script as stated above, it worked on my XP box. Thanks for the mods OP! FYI, I'm on Gladiatrix v3.
Edit 4: Sorry for keep editing this post I must be bored at work today. With this latest edit, I'm uploading a zip for XP that has the choice.com file in it and the script modified to work with it. I'd think it'd work in Win7 also, but someone should test it to try it out.

Nah, why would I want to completely get rid of lock? It's useful to me. I also like the fingerprint reader. I just want to be able to wake the phone's screen without resorting to the recessed power button. I'm generally satisfied with the locking mechanism as it is.
Granted, the script is risky as we've found the mod itself though is very clean and it's very clear cut what the code is doing there.
