I'm recently rooted with the paid version of rom manager but I can't get the rom list to update. Does anyone know if the Captivete version is still being supported?

Very few (if any) roms use rom manager at the moment due to differing cwm recoveries.

+1 for cappy you cannot find roms through the rom update in the rom manager. very limited.
So do we just hunt and peck thru the dev forum or is there a different repository?

each dev team has the different way to handle its rom, some have their own websites, others may upload the rom into some public sharing servers.
you have to go to the dev threads to search for what you want.

So, as a developer, you have to upload your rom to the CWM repository, or add a link to the cwm repository to the rom?

That is the just but with the captivate, because our roms use custom recoveries and lag fixes, putting roms onto tom manager is not a viable option
O.K. I really want to understand this. I thought rom manager and clockwork mod recovery were two different functions built into one piece of software. Why is rom management dependent on the specific recovery method you use?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Rom manager is for the most part a user interface for clock work recovery. To be honest I have stopped using rom manager all together. I just keep the update.zip for clockwork recovery on my sd.
Most if not all roms are now using custom recoveries that understand ext 4 which standard clockwork does not. So if you are on a custom rom, rom manager no longer communicates with the recovery on the rom and is itself for the most part useless
Other phones do not require the lag fix that sgs phones do. We use the lag fix to change the filing from rfs (laggy) to ext 4 (smooth). Rom manager/clockwork recovery do not account for our particular devices. so because of the special circumstances of samsung's decision to use rfs filing, we use custom recovery and lag fixes, which makes our roms not compatible with rom manager
I think.... ;p

Well, thank you. This was a nice little informative post on the pros/cons of Rom Manager. I was one of the people that (as a noob) bought this app right off jump assuming by the description that I could actually recover with a backup created with it. Assuming that it made a (ROM) when in fact it does not. I however am also one of the unfortunate that have a JH7 1006-1012 that can't just recover like most. Mine is the dreaded 3 button and follow this long tutorial and download 8 sets of files, use odin ( a specific version) and if I'm lucky, (which I was) I could get back to stock. I have since put behind me the thought of STAYING on stock and am now getting flash happy (like it's crack or something I just can't wait till I run across that happy norm that makes me feel like I need to stay put for a while because of comfort, speed and agility.
+1 thanks to you.
Purchased pro as well for the same reason.
So the "backup" I created with "rom manager" will not restore me to my virgin settings, except for being rooted of course? Is that backup good for anything?
If you flash stock but want to restore your settings and apps, or if you play around on stock and mess something up then restore is useful. If you are on a 2.2 rom and try to restore your stock backup you will run into issues, you could disable lag fix, flash stock kernel and modem then restore, but flashing stock is much easier
Thanks mcord. I see you helping us noobs all over the Q&A section so cheers to you! And a press on your thanks button.

mcord, I have a Canadian Version of the Captivate i896. I am running stock 2.2 Froyo and wanted to flash a ROM but had some questions so I am being careful. I also thought that ClockworkMod would allow me to Backup my current ROM and Restore it if required. Are you saying that this does not work with Froyo?
1. Since no one has created a stock i896 ROM that does not have the AT&T logo how can I backup my Stock ROM?
2. If I flash a custom recovery load a ROM and then want to Load back Stock Froyo from Rogers (Here in Canada) can I do this simply by using any i896 Eclair ROM? Will Kies be ok with a custom recovery?
I bought ROM Manager too, and then found out I didn't need it to either back up or to flash. Kind of a waste, but oh well.
Flashing straight with CWM and backup/restore with TiBu works great.

Hi I have just bought Motorola Milestone which seems like Vodafone unlocked version. I am new at Android will ask few general questions.
1. How to identify if the phone is rooted or not?
2. Can I flash my phone (Build SHOLS_U2_02.36.0) to Android 2.2 I am currently running 2.1 Update1
3. What should I do before flashing rom?
4. What are Must-Have software applications to "play" (Flash, Overclock, Reconfigure) with on the phone
THANKs
Hi and enjoy your new Milestone..!
1) Check if you have an app "Superuser" installed, with a pirate's icon. If yes, you are Rooted. Or install an app that needs Root and see if it works well.
2) There's no official FroYo ROM yet, we are waiting for it any day now. But you can flash other FroYo ROMs from Milestone Android Development Forum.
3) You should Read carefully..
4) OpenRecovery, RSD Lite, Motorola USB Drivers
Enjoy modding..!

3. Read up in the forums for the details. In general, you need to
A. Flash vulnerable recovery using RSD (requires MOT usb drivers)
B. Install a new recovery (androidiani is most likely best one for milestone)
C. Install the custom ROM of your choice (most newer roms are froyo based, give you root and already overclocked. My fav is CM6.
4.
In to what I listed above, a few must have (or at least nice to have) apps:
A. Setcpu (overclocking gui and profiles)
B. rootexplorer (file manager with options for root users)
C. Google apps (aka GAPPS). Many roms do need come with the google experience stuff like market and gmail). You need to downlaod seperately.

Yesterday i got my phone back from repairs (headphone socket) and decided to try the new Sense Rom. Liked it, but performance wasn't to my tastes. i installed the backup from my normal 2.2 ROM.
My question is, for example if i install the iceandfire rom (which i see is being updated all the time), will i have to do a complete reinstall of the ROM every time?

I am a bit confused...dod you have a milestone. If so, did you mean your 'normal' 2.1 ROM?
The MS does not have 2.2 yet...
In any case, you usually do not need to do a full wipe for incremental versions. I have never tried iceandfire, but CM6 and others work like this. Only major revisions require wipes. Clearing the dalvik cache and cache partition (easy to do from openrecovery) is usually all that is required. This does not impact any of your data...

Ah...well if by vanillaish, you mean stock...there are currently at least 2 leaked versions more recent than GOT. GOT is actually rather old and buggy.
But your point is taken, it is a Motorolaish release. I prefer AOSP (android open source project) based ROMs. Motorola proprietary files are still used (drivers and kernel), but the rest is all open source/ customized.
IMHO, this provides features and stuff people actually want.

Hi again. I was reading some other posts but I am still confused.
I have no understanding why all these stuff is used for updating ROM on the device.
What is Open Recovery? why is it used and what does Root-ing do?
I also noticed several times in posts saying Nandroid, Downgrading Recovery Partition, sbf recovery....
Can anyone describe what exactly all these things mean and why are they used for?
Thanks.

Hey all so I currently have an unlocked bootloader, rooted Nexus One still running the Stock Froyo 2.2.2. and I decided to finally upgrade to the OTA Gingerbread update but have a problem.
The OTA update restarts my phone with a triangle with an "!" inside it and an Android next to it, so I decided to try a manual update as described here.
Everything went well until the installation itself, during the install I kept getting some sort of error stating Twitter.apk in the system directory could not be authenticated.
So here's the problem, with Titanium Backup I made the stupid mistake of uninstalling it and not backing it up when I first rooted a while ago. I thought I could just reinstall it from the market but I get the same error. The only solution I can think of is if someone running a Nexus One Stock Froyo could possibly send me the Titanium Backup files of Twitter, hopefully this would make it work, otherwise I don't think I could ever update.
Since your bootloader is unlocked, you can use fastboot to install a custom recovery and then flash whatever you want (including a stock image)...

Thanks for the response, but I'm having trouble figuring some of this stuff, after spending some time with the search option here in XDA:
1. I don't the difference between custom recovery and flashing an image.
2. I can't find a simple stock Gingerbread image (thought its called ROM?) Details in posts tend to be vague for people that are learning this stuff, like me.
3. Many people have written to use Amron_ra 2.2.1 but I don't know the specifics of each ROM are (ex. if its Froyo based, Gingerbread based, etc.)
4. Would using ROM Manager be a good method to use any ROM or is it limited?
I'm essentially looking for an effective method to upgrading to a clean Gingerbread, since doing it the normal way won't work on my phone (as stated in my first post).
1 - Recovery, bootloader, and 'ROM' are two different partitions on you phone. Once you break security on one, you can use it to break the security on the other. In your case, the security on your bootloader is broken (unlocked), so you can use it to install new software on the other partitions.
2 - See bullet 4 on the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005591
3 - For recovery you have 2 choices, Amon Ra or Clockwork, If you go with Clockwork, I recommend you stay away from 3.x versions. Unless the ROM you want to install says otherwise, either of these recoveries will work.
4 - ROM Manger will work. It's an easy way to achieve results, but unless you know what you are doing, it's also an easy way to screw things up.
I suggest you take it a step at at a time, and really understand what you are doing. Reading the wiki is always a good start, then ask specific questions...

Thanks Danger, I made the jump to Cyanogen 7, RC-4 via ROM Manager and couldn't be happier! Only problem is the known audio bug for Nexus One (person on other end of a call hears a lot of static sometimes, and have to recall them). The forced apps2sd is by far my most favourite feature, especially since the N1 internal space is pretty horrible, I've moved most of my apps2sd and haven't had any problems thus far.
Thanks for recommending CM7, I just wish their website listed the full features for newbies like me.

I have never flashed a phone before but I have built my own computer, so I am not a total newbe and am not affraid to try something new.

Is your captivate running stock 2.2?
Sent from my SGH-I897
Not difficult at all:
*download ODIN 1.81 on your pc
*download latest KI2 stock ginger rom from the dev forum
*back up your apps etc using titanium backup to external sd card
*perform factory reset on cappy
*open ODIN and place downloaded .tar file that u downloaded earlier in "PDA" section
*turn off phone and hold vol up&down while turning on to start download mode
*plug phone in usb cable hooked to computer
*say a small prayer, lol
*once connection is established, press start on ODIN
*when flash is completed phone will reset, u may unplug usb cable when u see the ATT screen on phone
*that's it, if your successful then u can perform root, which is done differently than 2.2, so be prepared, I can PM u or respond here to tell u how if your successful with the gingerbread flash.
Good luck, and remember, bootloaders will be flashed, so there is an outside chance to screw your phone, so proceed with caution.
If I use Titanium Backup then don't I need to be rooted in order to restore my apps and contacts?

Duh! Read the OP stupid! (Schizophrenic humor) Ok. Remember CM7 might not have the best battery life but I have always seen it as the least risky way to get GB running on the Captivate because you're not flashing bootloaders that are different from what you already have with stock 2.2 . The ONLY time I ever hard bricked was when attempting to flash GB bootloaders over Froyo bootloaders. Just be careful.

What I have always done is to export my contacts to the external sd card by using "import/export" function in the contacts app, not sure if it would have a impact on all of your settings though because I have always used a simple setup, single ringtone for everyone in my contacts. Just be prepared in case something doesn't work as expected. I have no experience with using titanium to backup the contacts.

Exporting the contacts is not an option since it will take a contact with multiple numbers and turn them into an indvidual one for each number. I have used AndroidSync Wifi to backup contacts and it seems to work pretty good. I have never used Titanium before so I am not sure how well it works with contacts.
The easiest way to back up your contacts is to save them to google. Lol. +1 on the KI2 rom, Flashed it a few days ago and it's amazing... I'm no longer tempted to cash in 80 hours of PTO to get the Galaxy SII tomorrow.

Do you flash everyday? Is there a stable build? Ect.........

I still have not flashed. Have been reading threads for hours and hours. So much information and so many Roms Here is what I would like, swipe, get all my contacts back in groups (important for work)and a good stable rom. Seems like each rom has its issues, GPS, download ability, speed of download, some media files not working, poor call quality, not getting text messages, ect......... I know that the developers don't like to recommend roms but with all the different roms and some threads being close to 1000 pages long, it is hard to tell what is considered stable and what is an alpha or beta and what is current. The information on my phone is below. Any help or suggestions to a few good roms with complete instructions would be appreciated. Is rom manager even an option for flashing?
I would understand if the mods close this thread but I am sure that I am not the only one overwhelmed by all this information. It is pretty amazing how many people contribute to the development of all the different Roms.
Thanks again for any help or guidance!
Hi Everyone,
I bought ROM Manager Premium v4.5.0.1, in order to do a Nandroid backup on my I896 running stock I896UXJL1.
I ran "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", and it said my Current Recovery 2.5.1.2 was the same as the Latest Recovery. So far so good.
Then I ran "Backup Current ROM." Instead of doing a backup, it rebooted my phone into Recovery "3e" every time. I tried it many times and got the same result.
This is so confusing. For whatever reason the app decides to boot my phone into recovery instead of doing the backup, I would expect it to at least go into CWM Recovery instead of the stock 3e.
Questions:
1. Has any of you gotten rebooted when you try to do a Nandroid backup?
2. Has any of you gotten rebooted into stock recovery even when CWM is installed?
Thanks.
KK
In general ROM manager is trash for SGS. Don't bother with them. I would say find a kernel with CWM cooked in it but JL1 is a rogers only and I don't know any for that.

froyo wasnt so damn kenel picky. any froyo kernel will work.
Doesn't work with any ROM
I've tried ROM manager after flashing KH3 and KJ3, and the "Reboot into Recovery" still doesn't work. I get the triangle-exclaimation-droid screen with nothing else, and it stays that way until I use the 3-button reboot.
Since the app can't even perform one of the more basic functions, I am afraid to let it do anything else. I wish I hadn't paid for the premium version.

Stop what you are doing and read. ROM Manager sucks basically. Very few people on here actually use it. If you keep just throwing things at your phone though without knowing what you are doing you are going to end up with a shiny, expensive, paperweight. Then you get to spend upwards of 50$ getting that fixed. So please, for me, the forum, and your phone just read. Or at very least ask a directed, detailed question. As in: my phone is here, im trying to get to there, this is what im doing and this is where and how its failing.
Flashing using an app
I actually did weeks of reading before flashing my phone for the first time. I got scared by potential problems such as USB interruptions.
This is where I am at: I've been using mostly Odin to flash. I have successfully flashed KH3 and then KJ3 (with KF1 bootloaders and Boog's kernel); however, I am still nervous each time I do anything.
This is where I hope (or used to hope) to get to: I keep looking for a way to minimize the probability of human errors and technical hiccups. (It's a habit I've picked up while working as a software manager.)
I went for ROM Manager because the same developer wrote CWM. I do appreciate you guys sharing your opinion of the app's effectiveness with the SGS. I only wish I had been warned sooner (ideally by the app's developer).
Find ODIN packages that don't inlcude bootloaders. That will only minimize your risk to soft bricks wich can be recovered with a jig that are easy to make and only cost ~ $10 if you choose to buy them. I personally use KH3 as my "stock" setting when I need to flash to stock. I use Cezar's KH3 .tar that doesn't include them but there are atleast 1 1 click around.
CWM for Captivate Gingerbread UCKJ2
Sorry in advance for the noob question. I have read many posts but can't find my answer. I've installed the leaked gingerbread rom from Samsung called uckj2. I was trying to change the modem by flashing a zip file using clockworkmod recovery. I've heard the way to do it is by using a kernel that already has cockworkmod already baked in. Which kernel should I use?
Thanks in advance
KJ2 have 3 kernels that should work. Corn kernek, Samurai and Boog's kernel.
Finally got things up and running on CassieXL GB ROM. I did not feel secure on the ICS ROMS with the weird Kernel. I find it odd that all the active threads in development are for ICS or CM9 ROMS.
1. What GB ROM are stable and highly regarded? Cassie XL thread was closed after I flashed it!
So I wanted a good Nandroid. Powered off and started 5.0.27 CWM. Backup yields:
-messages about mounts?
-error while backing up boot image! SD Card space free xxxxx (there's plenty of space. I tried external as well as internal.
-/tmp/recovery.log copied to /sd or something
2. Cassie installed CWM Manager. Does that use the same recovery as vol up/home/power? Is CWM Manager app only compatible with certain kernels? Cassie installed Franco Kernel-9. CWM Manager v3.0 lists current kernel as CF-Root 5.0.
History:
New phone with GB
PC Odin LPY (felt unsafe... but really liked it), Su installer, CWM Installer
PC Odin CF Root Kernel
CWM flash Parnoid Android (Missed some Note things and my eyes hurt)
Triangle away
Flash Casie LC1 based ROM
That included superuser, but I ran an app that said I needed busybox so I used busy box free from the market (stericson) and the app works fine (Google Voice Full Integration). The busy box free app says symlinks applets will not be replaced in the free version? Busy box installer also states multiple versions available... fairly sure I used the default 1.20.0.
To be honest, I don't really understand what busybox actually does. But I know I need it and it's usually included in the kernel/ROM/
3. Did I create some kind of incompatibility between my busybox and rooted kernel? Titanium says: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Tatanium from app). Bottom Line: How do I make a nandroid?
4. Should I stick w/ Casie's inclued Franco Kernel-9? I've heard of a -10 version, but the development thread is way deep with a bunch of LPY ROMS!
5. While I'm at it, I'm not yet up to speed on modem options yet. Casie put me on LB2 when I flashed it. Seems to be working ok, but I have to toggle data sometimes.
Thanks for the help. I would like to make this a learning experience.
Howdi.
So you had gb stock. Did you make a backup of this before lpy.
I would flash a directly rootable gb rom see dr k thread.
Do that then install cassie xlr rom. Then flash franco ten yhats all you need.
Lb2 is fine but you can try any gb modem which suits your region.
If you want hassle free base then xlr v x is proven. If you want summin fancier then rocket rom or lightning rom are good choices

DarkyRom would be my choice if you don't want to stay on a discontinued Rom.

Haven't the faintest idea why that happened, frankly. I think I would try to flash one of the pre-rooted Roms to go all the way back, like this:

If you get into bootloop after the flash:

When all this goes well, flash whatever you like from CWMR.

CWM Manager is just a graphic interface for your CWM Recovery. Manager uses all the CWMR functions to carry out whatever you tell it to.
And it lists your kernel as CF-Root, because Franco is 100% compatible with CF-Root.

Don't obsess over busybox. Suffice it to say that you need to have one, that's all.

See above for going all the way back.

Download Franco 10 if you want to have it. It is CWMR flashable.

LB2 is perfectly OK. In fact, I'm using it on Asylum ICS myself.
THANKS to both of you. Looks like its back to ODIN for a while.
Just wish I had a good nandroid so I don't have to reset stuff after titanium restore.
Maybe I'll wait for a good Tw ICS kernel. I LIKED Lpy. How's life on asalyum?

Can't complain. It's an ICS equivalent of Cassie's; you get a barebone Rom you
can customize to your liking.
I used that rogue app Busybox Free to uninstall busybox. Took a long time.... removing a buncch of symlinks?
Nandroid is running now... so at least I'll have some good GB DATA.
Link above for Franco kernel is dead. Current thread is all about new LPY based project. I paid him $2 for the Franco app.
Will flashing that kernel also give me busybox back, and symlinks?
