First off don't shoot me. I am interested in getting Gingerbread on my Captivate or another good rom. I have been on the forum for a few years but have never done amything to my phone until now. I just rooted it and installed Rom Manager and Titanium backup. I have been reading so many threads that my head is spinning. There are alot of different roms available but I have no idea of which to use. Can someone please point me in the right direction to put Gingerbread on my phone? I have had this phone for over a year and am ready for a change without having to buy a new phone. I have never flashed a phone before but I have built my own computer, so I am not a total newbe and am not affraid to try something new.
My phone:
Firmware 2.2
I897UCKB1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build Froyo.UCKB1
Rooted
Rom Manager
Titanium Backup

Thanks!
Lol, its cool man....any of the ops in each rom are very detailed in how to flash. Designgears have a great Odin oneclick to stock that's a must have in case something get borked. The Fasty GB roms are my favorite choice. Any of the KH3 roms wont disappoint. Make sure you use the correct bootloaders too. Happy flashing!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7287634 check this out here for back-to-stock info. I would try CM7 since you already have some experience with it. They have allot of info in their thread in the Dev forum. That is what I run and I like it because I didn't have to flash bootloaders and its one of the simplest to install. Is your captivate running stock 2.2?
Sent from my SGH-I897
Not difficult at all:
*download ODIN 1.81 on your pc
*download latest KI2 stock ginger rom from the dev forum
*back up your apps etc using titanium backup to external sd card
*perform factory reset on cappy
*open ODIN and place downloaded .tar file that u downloaded earlier in "PDA" section
*turn off phone and hold vol up&down while turning on to start download mode
*plug phone in usb cable hooked to computer
*say a small prayer, lol
*once connection is established, press start on ODIN
*when flash is completed phone will reset, u may unplug usb cable when u see the ATT screen on phone
*that's it, if your successful then u can perform root, which is done differently than 2.2, so be prepared, I can PM u or respond here to tell u how if your successful with the gingerbread flash.
Good luck, and remember, bootloaders will be flashed, so there is an outside chance to screw your phone, so proceed with caution.
If I use Titanium Backup then don't I need to be rooted in order to restore my apps and contacts?

Duh! Read the OP stupid! (Schizophrenic humor) Ok. Remember CM7 might not have the best battery life but I have always seen it as the least risky way to get GB running on the Captivate because you're not flashing bootloaders that are different from what you already have with stock 2.2 . The ONLY time I ever hard bricked was when attempting to flash GB bootloaders over Froyo bootloaders. Just be careful.

You have to be rooted to restore apps using titanium, not for contacts though.

I would be using Titanium to backup my contacts unless there is a better way. I have several groups in my contacts for work and personal ring tones for different groups. It would be a major pain to have to set them up again.

What I have always done is to export my contacts to the external sd card by using "import/export" function in the contacts app, not sure if it would have a impact on all of your settings though because I have always used a simple setup, single ringtone for everyone in my contacts. Just be prepared in case something doesn't work as expected. I have no experience with using titanium to backup the contacts.

Exporting the contacts is not an option since it will take a contact with multiple numbers and turn them into an indvidual one for each number. I have used AndroidSync Wifi to backup contacts and it seems to work pretty good. I have never used Titanium before so I am not sure how well it works with contacts.
The easiest way to back up your contacts is to save them to google. Lol. +1 on the KI2 rom, Flashed it a few days ago and it's amazing... I'm no longer tempted to cash in 80 hours of PTO to get the Galaxy SII tomorrow.

Do you know which thread has the current information on KI2? There are a lot of different threads. Thanks!
Never mind. This is getting to confusing. Some say you need a kernel and some don't. Then there is the Flash clockworkmod Recovery. Is this the same thing that is in Rom Manager? Do I get the full version of Rom manager and flash with that? Do you use Odin? Do you flash to stock? I am already running 2.2 rooted.Threads are 500-1000 pages long, some have old information, ect.............where is the most current updated information????? CM7 nightly builds?? Do you flash everyday? Is there a stable build? Ect.........

download link is in there, just stick the file in the pda slot in odin, put phone into download mode, and flash away... everything you need is in that file (bootloaders, kernel, etc).. it's the stock at&t leak, so it also has bloatware, but oh well.

I still have not flashed. Have been reading threads for hours and hours. So much information and so many Roms Here is what I would like, swipe, get all my contacts back in groups (important for work)and a good stable rom. Seems like each rom has its issues, GPS, download ability, speed of download, some media files not working, poor call quality, not getting text messages, ect......... I know that the developers don't like to recommend roms but with all the different roms and some threads being close to 1000 pages long, it is hard to tell what is considered stable and what is an alpha or beta and what is current. The information on my phone is below. Any help or suggestions to a few good roms with complete instructions would be appreciated. Is rom manager even an option for flashing?
I would understand if the mods close this thread but I am sure that I am not the only one overwhelmed by all this information. It is pretty amazing how many people contribute to the development of all the different Roms.
Thanks again for any help or guidance!

Trying to find a quick ROM recommendation that is safe to get started with my AT&T i897.
Darkys seems popular but then in the install guide it says ...
The Samsung Galaxy S comes in several types. The ones that are compatible with Darky's ROM, are the GT-I9000 (International), the Verizon and Bell South. Check your Firmware Version.
So it looks like I should not use this with my AT&T i897.
Then the Rogers ROM talks about i896, so I guess cannot use this either.
Any quick recommendations for an i897 ROM to get started?
Are any 2.3 ROMs out yet?

I am skipping the titanium backup step as I dont need to keep any apps or settings.
I am skipping the ODIN step because I think I am already on the stock firmware (and I only have access to linux and ODIN is for windows and I would need to use that other replacement that is compiled for linux).
So I am just doing the rooting and clockwork recovery steps.
Does that sound ok?

It can but you are fine.
A suggestion, download android id changer from market. Open app, select save id. It creates a file in your internal sd called update.id. When toy flash a ruin dl the app again, load id, change id.
Your across id is unique to your device but is lost with flash, this keeps it

Yes, it does. For phone with build 10.10 and later, there is a different process to restore stock. Odin one click doesn't work well.
Another thing you should do is backup your /efs directory specifically nv_data.bin.

No. you want to be carefull of lag fixes but for the most part they are all compatible. This week I went from docs to andromeda to continuum to paragon. I never flashed stock
which was your favourite ROM of those examples?
i wonder when you really need to use ODIN or HEIMDALL?
For someone who had not flashed before I would go with andromeda. It is a nice rom and is stable and fast. or you may want to look at phoenix. Active friendly devs that respond to questions.
I am on paragon right now and I really like it. The rom had an over clocked kernel which I switched out because oc is not my thing. You can't go wrong with any that I mentioned.
Which rom is best is a matter of opinion.
If things go wrong with a flash is when you need to flash stock
Try the one in my signature. And the scores say it all. I get home with about 50-60% battery after a moderate use day (1 hour talk and 1 hour of activities that keep screen on, apart from push email accounts).
Thanks guys.
I'm ready to get started .. will report back soon

I have read the pages on flashing with CWM, and I normally Odin to stock and Master Clear. How do you flash without doing this and not causing problems? Thanks!
I have two captivate I987's. Both are 2.2 and running firefly 3. On one phone I backed up stock froyo with nandroid via cwm. I also backed up the stock kernel via sgs kernel flasher. Can I take the nandroid bu and kernel bu from one phone, put it on my pc, compress to zip, then place in the sd card of the other phone and flash via cwm? Getting me back to stock 2.2?
Also, i use the free version of TIBU. I copied my back up to my pc. When I try to put the backup on my new captivate, TIBU doesn't seem to recognize it. I've placed it in the root of the sd as well as the TIBU folder. Any way to make this work?
1. No.
2. Hit the "problems?" Button in tibu and make sure busybox is installed.
Busy box is installed. Maybe something else not right? Do I have to use paid version? Since I got ur attention, is using odin one click with any build higher than 1010 an almost guarantee of brick. Does anyone know? Currently I have a 1010, and an 1101.

You don't need the paid version.ummm Make sure it's pointed to the right folder and that it didn't get corrupt copying over from your pc.
I flash and mod 3 captivates: 1 a 1010, and 2 are 1012 all I've used is one click. no problems.
You can have a bootloop issue not a un recoverable brick. Go check the last few pages of the one click thread ... I described what to do when that happens. It's not a huge deal.
And this works for I897 ? Couldn't find ur post in the thread. There seem to be hundreds of replies

That won't work.
And I think you will run into issues with the efs directory if you try it. Your IMEI number will be converted to the IMEI of the other phone. What will AT&T do if two sims are logged on to the same IMEI phone? Don't know. There may be a way to backup everything but the efs directory, but if not, I'm guessing the phone will balk at restoring a backup with four images from one phone, and the efs image from a second phone.
Just used odin one click on my 1101 build. Worked perfectly, which is good, cuz I'm gonna return this thing soon. Since it worked once, with this build, it should work all the time now, right? (unless something else occurs, like bad connection, usb probs etc). If i flash 2.3 roms will it still work, or will the new boots screw it up. read some posts, but wondering if any of you have personal experiences.

I have a 1008 batch, so I can't speak about model issues, but I have used Odin One Click to flash back to stock JF6 (Eclair) from a 2.3.3 ROM. The new bootloaders should not create any adverse effects for your phone. Odin One Click will flash both bootloaders back to stock Eclair.
Okay first of all, I would like to apologize if this is being posted in the wrong forum, or if I am upsetting anybody by posting this. I have searched all over for a couple days trying to figure this out. This is my last resort, and I'm hoping you guys can help. All of your time and understanding is much appreciated!
So a little background. About a week ago, I rooted my AT&T Captivate 2.2(build number 1012 if that helps) using Superoneclick, and then flashed CM7.1 using clockworkmod. I was not satisfied with CM7.1(terrible battery for me, other various reasons). I then downloaded MIUI (not sure which version, the one available on the premium version of clockworkmod) and flashed it using clockworkmod. This started with the cm bootscreen, and then went to an MIUI bootscreen that played a little tune. The miui screen looped, and it would not go past this.
After rebooting and running into the same thing, I went to f\attempt to find a solution. I thought I backed up my rom, but it had been erased (issue with the external sd I think). I used an odin one click I found on here, but this odin one click brought me back to eclair 2.1, instead of 2.2. Up until now, I could get into both download and recovery mode using the three button method, and now I can't. I am not sure what to do exactly. I have read about getting it into download mode using adb, but I'm not sure if that would work in my situation, and I'm not too educated on adb or android sdk. I stayed up almost all night last night, and now have researched most of today, not making much progress.
Thanks again for your time!
Just to clarify have you used all button methods in order to try to get into download mode. Seems as though flashing bootloaders may have f'ed up you combos. I have a couple suggestions. I'll edit my post as I find the urls to post for you
Stock GB ROM you should be using -- http://www.mediafire.com/?05nemq5yyn5fuqf, this one has bootloaders, but preferably you should use stock odin roms that don't mess with the BL's (after this of course, since yours are messed up right now).
Now of course this depends upon you getting into download mode. If you can use ROMmanager (btw, I don't recommend you download your roms from rommanager, as that will not always be the most up to date and may not be the one for you) to get into recovery mode, then from there go to advanced then reboot download. However some kernels do not support this. Try the cable methods before trying this method.
First of all, I appreciate your help Mikel.canovas. I have used all the button methods. I can no longer get into recovery or download. (Romtoolbox enables me to get into recovery(2E), but not download). I now have root access, but am not able to sideload apps, and apparently rommanager free isn't available on the market. I did buy rommanager premium, but unfortunately now that I basically reset my phone, it doesn't show up as bought (known issue, apparently not resolved?), and even after I bought it again, it says I need the free version to even use the premium version.
Should I go through the process to be able to sideload apps? Or will romtoolbox do the trick? Rom toolbox gives me the option to install a rom from my sd card. Should I use that, and select the GB ROM you provided? I'm not sure I understood exactly how you want me to get that GB ROM onto my phone.
What I want to eventually have is either MIUI or rom fasty on my phone. If possible, could you give me some steps on how to reach that goal?
Thanks again for your time. Eclair on the captivate is not pleasant, especially since I had a taste of CM.
Well first off I highly recommend Mosaic over CM or Fasty, solely because of performance and battery life. However that is all subjective.
Ah since you're rom is sending to 2E recovery, you're not rooted with cwm. You need to flash another kernel that supports this. Afterwards, If you can get into CWM, I recommend putting CM onto your sdcard and flashing from there. After booting into CM hold down the power button, press reboot, choose reboot download. See if that works. If not, does adb reboot download work for you? If not again, I recommend trying another USB port, reinstalling drivers, trying different button combos. I've had issues getting into download mode in the past and, trust me, it is VERY frustrating.
Well first of all, before you back into flashing stuff, don't flash to stock unless you have done everything possible with the tools on your phone. I'm assuming you gave it at least 5 minutes to boot up, as the first boot can variably take longer. You could go into recovery and wipe stuff, or you could have gone back to CM7. A flash to stock is probably never necessary in the situation you reported.
Anyway, if you can get into recovery, maybe try getting a kernel that allows you to reboot into download from recovery. Although that will depends on what kernel you are on right now, as I know speedmod kernel has that option, but you would need to get to download to flash that.
And as another poster wrote, have you tried all button combinations?

Oh, and miui won't really give you better battery life than CM7. It basically is CM7 with a different UI. I loved CM7 a ton, so if you are having issues with it, let me know! With the right kernel and other settings, battery life is pretty decent, as long as you charge nightly.

Alright, thank you, I will be checking back tomorrow.
Eventually what I want is to have the working 3 button combos again for both download and recovery mode, and either the miui, mosaic or rom fasty on my phone.
Easy flash GB BL's and you won't have to worry about 3 button problems!
If you didnt do a Master Clear, now would be the time. Make sure you back up anything you want to keep. MC will erase EVERYTHING on your internal SD
Remove your Micro SD, and your SIM
Download:
OneClick Root
SideLoadWonderMachine This also has CWM, 3ButtonFix and ROM Manager in the zip
Make sure you have Debugging enabled
Connect to your PC
Run One Click Root, and follow the instructions, reboot
Run Sideload Wonder Machine and direct it to install ROM Manager
Copy the update.zip(CWM) and 3Button Fix to your phone
Open ROM manager and "reboot to recovery"
You'll go thru the boot twice to get to CWM
In CWM install the 3 Button Fix
I usually pop out the battery and check it before I put the ROM in.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE THE 3ButtonFix while you have a GB ROM installed you WILL brick your phone. It only works on 2.1, and 2.2 ROM's
using this one click package I now am able to manually enter download and recovery :

1012, do you think any of my problems would have to do with the build number? WHen I got it, it had froyo with the working button combinations.
Sorry, I didn't see that until now.
I now have clockwork recovery, and I'm about to try out fasty. Thanks again guys.
So can I delete this thread? And if so, should I? I've found plenty of threads that seem outdated, and fill up the search engine.

The only reason I asked about the build # is because the 10.08's were pretty commonly known to have 3 button issues. Also, anything above 1012 and using Odin1 Click could soft brick. I was just checking as I was offering info

And u will have to use one with the Bootloaders included, because to run a gingerbread firmware u gotta have the gb bootloaders.
Post #3 has the "leaked" KK4 (Been confirmed to be the same as official).

Since its already rooted do I need a computer?

Yep. Because these are Odin or Heimdall One Clicks.
You can't just flash to a GB firmware/rom from Eclair/Froyo without using Odin or Heimdall to at least get the Gb Bootloaders. You cannot just go through CWM recovery unless u already have the GB Bootloaders.
Of course u can get it all through mini Kies, the official GB 2.3.5 KK4 update that is.
I have a Samsung i9000 which I have rooted with super one click details of my phone are:
Model: GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.3.5
Baseband: I9000NEJVB
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000NEJVK-CL649158 [email protected] #2
Build No.: GINGERBREAD NEJVK
My question is this Can I flash this phone with any kernel or does it have to be specific to any of the numbers above (which I do not know what they mean) and if it does have to be specific could someone please tell me which kernel/s are compatible
Many thanks in advance

If you want root with proper CWM recovery you will most likely need to flash a kernel with Odin.
SuperOneClick gives you root for things like apps but you generally still have 3e recovery and you end up with signature failure whenever you try flash something from CWM.
In terms of kernels the easiest one which is closest to stock is CF-Root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
You generally want the same cf-root kernel as the last three digits of where it says gingerbreadxxx.
The rest of the instructions are in the first couple of posts. Fairly long but if you just read it slowly and go step by step its fairly easy.
Once you have flashed this you should have the correct recovery to flash other kernels & custom roms.
NB: Before you start all of this make sure to back up your phone. I would recommend connecting phone to pc & copying entire internal sd card straight to a folder on your pc. Also make sure to back up EFS folder. This is where your EMEI number is stored and you will want this if something goes wrong.
From Cyanogenmod Galaxy S wiki page:
Before you do anything — Make a backup
Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:
SMS/MMS messages, Call Log, Bookmarks, Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example, Any application data not on the SD card.
It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.
MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.
Hi, welcome to XDA man
Firstly everything scubadude said above is fairly important
Secondly; well it really depends on what you're looking for mate. If you just wanna upgrade your kernel (and by the sounds of it you dont really know what a kernel is, or what it does) then flashing a kernel only does so much on a standard rom. Flashing CF root kernel gives you proper root for root apps and clockworkmod (CWM) recovery so you can flash addons and suchlike.
However people usually root their phones so they can install a custom rom, which can improve speed, battery life, functionality and a ton of other things, and that's when people start looking around for different kernels which complement their current rom.
Just wanting a kernel with your stock rom doesn't make a whole load of sense. A ROM is what'll improve your phone.
If you want all the benefits of rooting, i'd suggest looking for a new ROM and flashing that.
If you're unsure of what rom to flash, read around in the i9000 development forum and read through different roms features. You could flash an android 2.3.X rom which would be a gingerbread (GB) rom or an android 4.0.X rom which would be an ice cream sandwich rom (ICS)
Dont ask which is the best rom for GB or ICS please, there are a billion threads like it, and it always comes down to this; read around, look at the features each rom gives, look at any bugs they may have (ICS roms probably have a few bugs here and there where most GB roms are completely stable) and decide if said ROM is good for you.
If you want a very stable, very fast, decent battery life and easy to flash GB rom then i'd suggest Gamerzrom. I'm running it atm.
However the dev stopped developing for it, but i can link you to ALL the files you need to flash the rom and a set of instructions if you'd like. I have a copy of all of them because i flash new roms but i usually go back to it anyway.
Definitely read the development section, you'll find something that sounds good for you.
Oh and for your information;
ICS > GB
and for GB firmwares, in order from newest to oldest, all 2.3.6 firmwares;
JW5>JW4>JVU>JW1
(those last two may be mixed up)
Most GB roms are on 2.3.6 now so it helps to know the above.
Thanks for the reply guys very much appteciated

No problemo, just hit thanks please
I think Gamerzrom is still being developed but it has been moved to another forum. Technorumor blog.
If you want a list of ICS ROMS & Kernels check this thread out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24536220#post24536220
For a fairly thorough ICS benchmark thread check this out.

For modems check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783
As mentioned there are plenty of threads out there asking about ROMS & for every ROM there are going to be people that tell you the one they are using is best. If you are going ICS there is a nice easy tutorial here.
It is for Team ICSSGS. It is an older ICS ROM but development has been slow lately so while it is still good it is running ICS 4.0.3 while the newer ROMS are all on ICS 4.0.4. Having said that it is still a great tutorial & rom to get you started. It goes right from all the files you need, to getting a stock rom in case things fail to flashing ICS. Once you done everything in this tutorial you will be in a good position to start flashing & testing roms to find the one you like.
Oh yes if we have helped hit thanks.
Root is essential if want access to the system of your phone(elusive folders).
Then u can tweak kernel(eg.voltage control or mc tweaker)and improve GPS(GPS aids) or backup your apps and settings with titanium backup.all these are apps u can download from android market.
These are good reasons to root your phone.
If u flash cf-root kernel u will have many options to tweak your phone, because it support init-d(all custom kernel's support this).like supercharger v6 or thunderbolt tweaks this will improve your phone greatly.but u need to READ a lot before going down this road.
Anyway good luck and don't be afraid to root.
ok i think i may have screwed up my phone i flashed the cf-root kernel and phone rebooted. it has now been stuck on the boot animation for an age( blue flashing android word) is there a way of getting it back to stock nejvb. please help this is my only mobile
sorted it thank god found threes firmware etc.
Glad it's sorted

Go to settings/about phone and check your build, then go to cf-root thread and find a kernel that matches your build and flash that.
But make sure that it's the i9000 thread and not the i9100.
There is a MOBILE ODIN,that is quite easy to operate. If u already got root u can flash almost anything.search for it, it's made by chainfire(cf-root, yep same guy)
But u need root to operate
time to do my rom
ok managed to flash my kernel with the cf-jvb kernel. what i would like to know now is "can i now just flash a rom, and could u explain what a modem is and do i need one or is it included in the rom" i am wanting to speed up my i9000 so could someone suggest a stable GB or ICS rom.
many thx in advance for all your help so far
I have just noticed that this new kernel will not allow Wi-Fi connection it will turn on, scan, wont find my connection and then turn its self off. Have I done something wrong or is it just the kernel that doesn't allow it?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
According to your opening post. Your build is jvk not jvb. Jvb is your baseband. Which you change depending on where in the world you live, it will make your phone have a strong signal. For example my build is jw5 so I use a root made for jw5. I use kg3 as my baseband because it is the stock bell Canada modem and gives the best signal. Root with jvk not jvb. Gl

About a week or more ago I downloaded 1987UCKK$ and Corn kernel v705. I flashed them both on my phone (AT&T samsung captivate) and my husbands phone (same). All went well and we love it.
My question is on our sdcard (internal) two files were placed:
ICS 4.0.0 captivate Full zip and ICS captivate update.zip
I have been looking to upgrade to ICS for the captivate and would like to know if I can use these files to do so through CWM??? If so, which one do I use or do I use them both. Any instructions on the order of use would be appreciated...
Thanks

right now I am runing AT&T Captaivate GB 2.3.5

My suggestion would be that, if a file was placed on your SDcard that you're not aware of, and aren't sure where you go them from.. and ESPECIALLY if you don't have instructions when you download them, DONT USE THEM. I'm biased, so I'll point you toward my rom. Take a look here, it's ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813917
However, if you take a look around the Android Development forums, there's quite a few roms on there. :]
Agreed...delete those zips...just because of not knowing what they are. And just go with the ICS Rom of your choice and it's specific install instructions in it's OP.

Gosh, this looks like an awesome rom...I found the rooting thing. Titanium wasn't opening and while I was looking around the new interface I found PERMISSIONS>manage ROOT permissions...and all is working fine now....got a lot to learn but I love to do that.
Thank you for suggestion this rom....
Have a great day
I need some help...after putting on my titanium backup of apps&data I restarted..
Now all kinds of errors messages...
exchange service stopped
android.process.media stopped
and others
email will NOT work
what should I do?
I am thinking about installing a cloud rom to see if that will work
My about phone is saying I9000 UGKCI
and I think it should say 1897UCKBI
I used the link that was given to me in the post above installed MIUI 2.8.3...
Please can someone advise me at this point?
Thanks
Start from scratch and re install. When you restore from titanium backup restore apps only. Not system apps. System app or system data will break your phone.
Also, the i9000 is the baseband. Essentially telling you what modem the phone is from. It is cosmetic. If you have any further questions ask in my thread so I can assisy
