I threw together a simple app to change the Carrier Name in the status bar/lockscreen to whatever you want since my alot of people seem to ask how to change it. Feel free to use it. Tested on Incredible and Eris. Dev's feel free to thow it your roms if you want. No ads and free just a simple tool to change the text. Thanks to the great Eris community.
Currently only works for AOSP roms such as cyanogenmod.
V1.3
While trouble shooting some radio issues on a rom I realized there's no need to reboot the phone to apply the new carrier name. I only needed to cycle the radio so I changed the app to toggle airplane mode on and then back off after you input your text so the change should take place immediately. This should make it a little easier to test and try different things or just change it more often.
I also added some shortcut buttons at the bottom to quickly add the text for the ", < and > signs so you don't have to type it all out. Only tested this with cm7 but should still work with any rom's it worked with before. Again thanks to Psiphon for pointing these symbol fixes out.

V1.2
Fix for phones that don't already have an eri.xml file there
Added version number to bottom of screen so people can be sure what version they are running.
http://www.androidphiles.com/files/get/DYIPFG2fur/ccname1.2.apk
V1.1
Fixed force closes when using symbols.
You can now use symbols except for double quotes. Apostrophe (single quote) seems to work fine.
Some usefull info if you want to use quotes....
Psiphon said:
You can use special characters like the quotation marks and greater/less than signs by using entity references (either using an entity name or number):
" (quotation mark) use "
< (less than sign) use either < or <

I hope this helps!

Added Toast popup to let you know the name has been set.
If reboot button does not reboot phone just reboot the phone manually
http://www.androidphiles.com/files/get/w5A-P2p_tx/ccname1.1.apk
This app does one thing. It takes the input text you type and creates and eri.xml file and puts it in data/ folder on your phone. Then you can reboot for change to take effect. You can uninstall the app after you change it if you want or you can leave it on there(it's pretty small) in case you like to switch it every now and then. If you flash a new rom you will have to rerun the app.

The color is tied in with other parts of the framework. Changing that would change other things as well so it would be more well suited to have that decided by a theme app or settings and not this.

Hmm...it should work fine on Ginger Tazz. Did you do any special characters in the text you attempted to set? Did it give a toast popup saying it set it? Also make sure you reboot the phone afterwards.
Worked prefectly. Thanks

Conap,
On my Eris running Shed's GSB 1.5, Your ver 1.1 does not change anything.
The reboot worked but all that happened was that widgets on my w. locker lock screen were gone.
I noticed that the poster above me is on froyo.

I didn't get an FC when I used a "*" (the 'dot' or symbol for a bullet list) symbol but after rebooting, I had a flashing triangle (roaming) in the status bar and instead of reading "VZW*Rules The Air", it said "Roaming Indicator Flashing"
I changed it to "VZW RulesTheAir" or similar, rebooted, and all's well now. Not sure if it's related to the above FC issue or not. I don't know what version I'm running either.
I did have version 1.0. Will update to 1.1

I think your issue was if there was no eri.xml file then it wasn't writing to it so I had it create a blank eri.xml and then write the text to it. Try out v1.2 http://www.androidphiles.com/files/get/DYIPFG2fur/ccname1.2.apk

You must have still had 1.0 cause I tried VZW*Rules The Air with 1.1 and it worked fine. The roaming indicator flashing means that the xml didn't have the right format which was the issue with using symbols in v1.0

Can I use this to change what carrier I'm on?
is this app simply putting a UI to the process of creating/editing the eri.xml file, or is it accomplishing something different than flashing ChangeToVZW and doing this manually?
a few days before this thread was started, i flashed the ChangeToVZW.zip and edited the resulting eri.xml file to customize the text to my liking, however when i switch to airplane mode or i am somewhere without coverage, the text changes to display "(No Service)". does this app do anything to change the text shown when you have no service? is the eri.xml file that is created identical to the one that ChangeToVZW creates? this is a very minor complaint as the time i spend in Airplane mode or areas of no coverage are very very small, but still something that bothers me
Using this app, in airplane mode, mine says "(No Service)". In that sense, it doesn't override the function 100% like you want.

UPDATED! v0.5 release now work on rooted heroes too!
I modified Teh Dust's Rosie Color Changer for HTC Dream so that it works on the Hero
Your Hero must be rooted with 'adb remount' support!
Download my ColorChanger_behnaam_Hero-mod.zip and unpack. Updated to v0.5
Connect phone to computer without mounting or syncing.
I've made a .bat file for each Rosie color pack which runs the adb commands for changing the color. So eg. if you want green, click on green.bat and the phone will reboot with the color of Rosie changed!
Thanks to Teh Dust who made the Color Changer first for the HTC Dreams Hero rom, I've just made the process of changing Rosie color for Hero users with this rom easier

slightly odd bug I just realised - prior to installing the mod, I used to get the 'H' icon indicating HSDPA data speeds; but after installing the mod, I only get a '3G' icon, indicating basic 3G data speeds. Not sure if this is a problem with the pack not having a modded 'H' icon or whether something is affecting my mobile data connection. Anyone else who used to get 'H', getting '3G' now instead?
Can we have the mod in white color ?? Thank You.

Can be the fact that the color themes are based on a old version/pre version of the rosie.apk in the Hero ROM. Since some parts of the themes are slightly different from how my stock ROM theme looked like.
Im working on improving the themes, but it seems to be harder then just repacking the .apk's, signing them and putting them into the phone. I'll modify them when I know how to do it!

The apk's were modified for U.S. use where we do not have HSDPA, only 3G.
Problem being that here when we were connected to 3G we got the H icon, so it was replaced with the 3G one. You are still connected to HDSPA but the icon just says 3G.
The icons can be changed in the com.htc.resources.apk

Hi, thanks for your work.
I got an issue : I got a french hero, original firmware, rooted and remount. I changed color following the steps, and everything is ok. But I can't get original working. Every colour is ok, but no way to get back the black. I launch the original.bat, it launches ok in command window, Hero reboot, but when it tried to launch TouchFlo, it says "applications has failed, services htc.com.launcher must reboot". And it relaunch, and says again.
Do you have an idea ? Thanks in advance.

Hi, thank you for your rapid answer. It worked fine, thank you very much.
looks very good, thnx for the work...
two remarks however:
1. The GPS icon shows 3 white dots in the corners (at least in the blue version). It's a small thing, but makes the icon look a bit crappy.
2. The Grey Curved bar on the lockscreen is gone, only the white lines containing the bar are visible.
Can these things be resolved?

I have exactly the same problem here!
This was created for the Vibrant, but I see no reason why it would not be compatible with the Captivate. Enjoy.
This Metamorph changes the status bar and status icons to the Sense theme. Make sure you are using the latest version of Metamorph (1.9.13 or higher). I'm not responsible for anything you do to your phone.
WARNING:
Make sure USB Debugging is enabled in Settings -> Applications -> Development.
If you're using the standard TouchWiz launcher, this morph will remove the Messaging icon from the bottom dock. To get it back, open your applications, press menu, view type, customizable. Menu again, then edit. Find the Messaging icon, drag it back into the dock, then menu, save, menu, view type, alphabetical grid (or whatever you had it on before.)

Yeah, the battery uses the HTC scale to show level, not the completely retarded Samsung scale that always shows damn near full.
This might be a dumb question, but I'm new to android so I'm gonna fire away anyways. I really prefer the way this made my notification bar look, but there is one thing that seriously bothers me up there, although it isn't directly related to this thread.
Is there any way to change the notifications for apps in the notification bar on the left side? In particular, I hate the way the juicedefender notification looks, and would like to change it to something... less colorful. Is this possible?
Short answer: Yes, if you're dead set on doing it.
Long answer: Metamorph wasn't really designed for Market apps, but it has been done. You would need to create an icon, and then build a metamorph zip around it. You could also pull the app from your computer, remove the icon, replace it with a new one, and resign the zip file. If you're not sure what you're doing, both methods will be a pain in the ass, but luckily there are plenty of tutorials on XDA.

Thanks, I sent you a PM to prevent the further derailment of the original thread.
On a more on topic note, every time I look at my notification bar I like it more and more. The battery icon does seem more accurate, and it didn't affect the brightness control swipe action.

Yes. This modifies the system framework, not the launcher. Technically this morph will work on any HDPI android phone.
What do you mean by not supporting market apps? I can't put apps on the home screen?

is there anything special I need to do to calibrate the battery icon? I'm at 67% battery right now and it's showing the same scale as the old samsung icon (i.e a sliver shaved off to denote the battery is between 50%-75%)
Do I sideload this onto my captivate or how do I install it??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Install Metamorph from the market, and move the file in the download link to your phone. There will be a folder called AndroidThemes on the root level of your SD card. Open Metamorph and locate it, the hit extract. After it extracts, select the applications you'd like to modify, or just hit Apply All.

I was explaining to a previous poster that Metamorph wasn't designed to be used to theme market apps. You can put whatever you want on the home screen. This morph just replaces the images. It doesn't change functionality at all.

It's possible that the Samsung battery fiasco runs deeper than just the images. I thought mine was showing a more realistic scale, but I could easily be mistaken.
I ran this and my phone just cut to black after applying 4/4 and now won't start?
edit: sorry, stupid, gave it time, pulled the battery, restarted... it's working fine... I just got a big over-anxious
It will soft reboot after applying the framework-res package. As long as it's allowed to run, you will be fine. If you did something stupid, such as pull the battery, you'll need to push framework-res.apk to /system/framework over ADB from recovery in order to get it to boot again.

I sat waiting for a solid 5 minutes with nothing happening. I tried holding down the power button for varying periods of time, to no avail. Plugged in/unplugged USB: nothing...
Eventually said "**** it" because it wasn't responding to anything, and pulled the battery. Replugged the battery, booted fine, the new framework installed just fine.
edit: I should note that I have removed the standard e-mail.apk (not the gmail one) and it tossed out a comment saying it wasn't there, but I assumed it would just skip it and move on (that's the only thing I could imagine that would cause it to sit at the black screen for so long)
EDIT - Updated post with working zip - EDIT
I've ported over the Frost theme, made by sonnysekhon for the HTC Desire. I went with that one since I'm personally not a circle battery fan. I added a couple pieces of work in here and there, but nothing major. I'd also like to take the time to thank fritzgerald for helping me with some smali edits. Thanks!
I've built this theme on top of Assonance 4.3, I'd assume it would work on all versions of Assonance (or any JK3 ROM for that matter) but I can't say for sure.

Sorry. You need to decompile the APK first. Use APK Manager or apktool. If you simply try to extract the APK you wont see it. After you make your changes and recompile the APK it's all located in the resources.arsc. Messing with the xmls especially in the values folder you'll want to make sure you back up. I crashed my phone tons of times while learning that portion.

I downloaded the current zip on the OP. Installed every time for me. Are you installing with CWM Recovery or stock recovery?
Running CWM, maybe it's just my phone :/
Now I'm getting stuck in a bootloop and my Nandroid b/u won't restore. Awesome...
(FYI, this was from working on twframework-res.apk, nothing to do with the theme posted in this thread)
I've made some changes to the framework and twframework files to get rid of the white text on the notification drop down as well as the blue text in the settings menu. Anyone willing to test out? I know the settings menu change works but I'm not sure on the drop down. I'm not running this ROM so it crashes my phone if I try to apply it.
Hi,
Could someone please direct me to a source of how to create or where to download a Notification pulldown mod on which there is no carrier and narrower bar for the power widgets?
There is another thread on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814890 but it seems never to be working correctly...
I second this, but for CM6.1 for the hero, i hate seeing the sprint thing every time.

i just changed my carrier label and moved it to the right, i also got rid of the clear button.
in the systemUI.apk if you decompile in the status_bar_Expanded.xml you can change the front size to 0 to get rid of the carrier label
Or, if you want to change it to something else, then you need to decompile framework-res.apk and edit the eri.xml located in res > xml > eri.xml.

In my case, it doesn't work to change the font size to 0. The carrier also belongs on top of the notification bar.
Maybe i made a mistake? The status_bar_expandex.xml is in attachment
I couldnt get it to move to the No notification line but I enjoy how mine is now, not sure why it isn't working for you

so after some work, i have come to the conclusion that the carrier label will not go away unless the clear button is moved (since they share the same line), well i cant get it to work anyway, even with the text size at 0.
i would try one of the clear button morphs Rori~ posted in this forum.
that status_bar_expanded.xml i posted worked just fine for my evo to recreate the picture.
Thanx for all the input...
The problem I have with Rori's mod is the white text on the black background - My Beautifull Wifget weather update in there had black text on back back making it impossible to read
I would see if you could grab just the status bar expanded xml and put it into your systemUI

I'm using a Motorola Milestone with CM7 RC1 Port by nadlabak. The Milestone doesn't have an open bootloader, so we can't flash other ROMs. In cause of that, i can't use the moddings by rori~ ... the files are different. I tried to change them for me and some changes working now, but the carrier label and clear button won't go at the bottom of notification bar .
sry for my english, i hope u understand

I know that, but what I was trying was to keep the clear button where it was and get rid of the carrier label, I think it is probably because the clear button isn't shown constantly that it caused the issue

The failure is that apk-manager_4.9 or At&T doesn't compile my changes in SystemUI.apk
They use the original status_bar_expand.xml, so i can't see any difference :/
I don't know why. Maybe i have to update android-sdk?! Maybe someone can take a look at the SystemUI.apk i posted above and change the carrier and clear button for test?

Even this is possible. Keep clear button where it is and only move carrier.
Took me a few hours to first know how to write an app, and I got this working! (Root required!)
Donation is appreciated!
You may use this on the new CM7 based ROMs to toggle your sound easily, devs, feel free to add it to your ROMs
Version 1.2 add support for better status tracking and keeps screen on when enabled
Version 1.1 adds the ability to launch from Long Press Search button!!! Much more convenient!
forumdoandroid - Private Server
If you are running a ROM with this built in, you need to update it using this zip (Backup Mirror)

If you downloaded directly from your device, yeah, the extension sometimes gets trimmed, I am not sure why, but it downloads as apk on my laptop in windows

But somehow I can't hear a noice if I turn your App on.

I actually wanted it to be in the CM7 notification toggle widgets, but i do not know how to add it there, must have to build from the original source or something. Doesnt look that easy.
CM7 team, maybe you can help???

Wonder if you could add a new feature in your app that allows to hide the soft keyboard toggle. That thing pops up all the time while I am using my lapdock.. annoying..

I think I found the necessary parameters to do that. PM me where to send the test version. I probably wont be able to send it over right away, i am still out of my house
Edit: NVM, I can't seem to do that under SDK, probably requires the framework handling or overriding with NDK. I can disable keyboard pop up within the apps I create, but once the app is not in focus, keyboard respond the same as if nothing happened.
Even if I make it a service, there is no available features for me to disable keyboard globally.
I can, however, use a Broadcast event onreceive to see if the phone is "charging"(or docked, whichever is handled by Atrix on CM7) and prompt the user if they want to switch keyboard to something like this. So, this is one way if the dock is detected, ask if the user want to switch keyboard? But I can't get the permissions to pass the onReceive properly... I am too noob
Another possibility, but this is going to be hard unless CM7 team jumps in, add the docking listener to the default keyboard itself, therefore, if the keyboard itself sees the phone is "docked", dont bother showing up for text edit text fields
I wonder if the Sound Switch can't be handled by the event of pluggin in the cable insted of an app or a widget.
plug in the cable -> start script *sound over hdmi*
plug out the cable -> start scrout *sound over speaker*

CM 7 has HDMI enabled as soon as the screen is on. More of a software limitation right now.
No hardware call is passed from what I can understand
