I have been able to previously flash custom roms such as Cognition V.2 and Cappy's GingerBread ROM, but just recently i tried to flash Cognition V.3 on my Captivate and im unable to even enter recovery mode to flash the new ROM. Ive tried all ways to get my phone in recovery mode including the power button and volume button idea. And when i do try to flash to recovery mode, the ATT world phone screen comes up and it seems to freeze on that screen until i remove the battery.
How can i get out of this problem? Any questions, just ask because im not the best at describing things like this.
If you backed up everything use odin to flash to stock and proceed from there.
I probably should have told you that i only have a mac...im stuck arent I?
Any way you can use boot camp to boot up windows?
I ran into a similar problem some time back when trying to install an upgraded rom. For whatever reason, I had to reinstall Rom Manager to get the clockwork recovery to work. Dunno if you use anything like this, but just a thought.
Additionally, if you get rom manager you can reboot into recovery through it, as opposed to using the traditional method.
its strange because even from rom manager when i press the button to send my phone into recovery, it still goes to the att screen and freezes..
Google heimdall sgs. Program to flash stock on mac. Not as easy as odin
So ive just tried to install heimdall on my mac and it says it cannot run because my mac is not updated...i ran an update scan and there are no new updates and im also running the most up to date OS for mac. What do i do??
You are going to have to ask that question on the heimdall thread

So as the title says i am stuck in recovery mode, Heres the story.
Got a new Samsing Galaxy S Rooted it installed lagfix all went with out a hitch. Started to install patch to allow me to connect to adhoc networks before hand I backed up my system folder using adb pull. I copied the files for the crack to get adhoc working. My wireless on my phone stops working, I restore the back up I made using adb push and restarted the phone now it boots into recovery mode everytime.
The PC still connects to my phone and I can still use adb. Now how can I undo my stupidity or atleast fix my phone?
Cheers guys

that's a good sign at least
see if you can get into the Download Mode with the 3 button
then Flash it with Odin back to a stock ROM
Ok i am not sure what you are refering to by download mode what 3 button combo do i use to get into it? I was just looking at the Odin software and it sounds like it might do the job but where can could i get a stock ROM? My phone is running Android 2.1 would it hurt to try installing the leaked copy of 2.2 using Odin?

So i rooted my Captivate I-987, used rom manager to backup my stock rom and flashed Axura on. I wanted to change roms to try new things out and i hit recover in the clockwork mod recovery mode, and it didn't go back to the original. So now the only working zip file on my phone is axura and i want to know is there anyway to get the original ATT stock to work, i know there is ODIN but i'm a little unsure on how to use it. Any help is appreciated, and i know there are posts about Odin but i was wodering if someone can help with the clockwork recovery possibly.

**Backup your apps first using Titanium backup**
ODIN is really easy to use once you know how to use it. First, download the correct drivers and ODIN as the OP says in the thread. Fire up ODIN after your download has finished.
Next, take out your sim card. Don't connect your USB cable to your phone yet. If you are on Axura currently, what you can do is long press the power button and boot into download mode (you will see the option along with power off and reboot). Once your phone is in download mode, ODIN will say "added!". If your phone is currently turned off, you can try pressing both volume buttons and connecting the USB cable to your phone and continue pressing the buttons until you see the download mode screen. Again if you do it right, ODIN will say "added!"
Once ODIN recognizes your device, press start and watch the magic happen! Your phone will be back to stock. It will lose root as well but you can re-root it easy.
PS ... get used to doing this. Flashing back to stock is always recommended before you flash a new ROM. Will save you lots of headaches.
No you can not get back to stock with out odin. If you used rom manger it would no doubt cause problems. When you flash a rom it can change stuff on the phone that can only be reset through odin. Its a clean slate for a rom and prevents most errors.

Hey guys my friends phone for some reason wont recognize the USB from the computer. So we cant put anything on his internal card, the usb just charges it. I tried to odin in download mode and still wont read the phone. Tried USB debugging, try reformatting, tried factory resetting, battery pull, clearing cache etc. Just everything you can do basically.
Wondering if anyone knows a fix for this.
Thanks.
Stupid question, but oort worked before correct?
What rom are you on
What are you looking to do
He is on Seredipities 5.8 with the suckerpunchs kernel.
It did before but stopped randomly 2 weeks ago.
He just wants the function back as it is very inconvenient.
Try different kernel
Dl sgs kernel flasher from market
Dl hardcore kernel
Open app
Choose kernel
...
Navigate to download folder
Select kernel zip
Flag kernel
Tried that and still nothing.
What happens when you plug into the pc? Are you using an oem cord?
Tried reinstalling drivers?
We get no response from my computer, and his computer says USB no recognized.
I already reinstalled the drivers, my phone works no problem just his. Same builds too.
We are using the OEM cord and when we plug it in his phone just starts charging, nothing about USB.
Got me, could try another rom, although I am bit certain that will work. Sorry, could be a hardware issue
Perhaps I'll get him to do that if there is a rom that doesnt requite odin back to stock.
Hopfully it isnt a hardware issue.
Thanks anyways.
Any rom can be flashed without odin, I do it all the time, did it twice today
Ok will give it a try, just every rom I read they tell us to flash to stock so just assumed we had to.
Honestly, old habit, dev do not know what you have on your phone so if you start from stock easier to problem shoot
Sorry I just read my mistake
We flashed a new rom but now he is stuck on the boot screen... Can't even get into recovery any more. I guess its bricked now? f**k...
What rom, can you still get into recovery, how long in boot screen
Stayed for ever, waited 15 mins. Can't get into recovery either. We tried to flash a froyo stock rom.

edit....just re-read that..... why on earth stock froyo? you flashed a stock rom over a voodoo enabled filesystem...just flash a voodoo kernel from odin

That is your problem right there. I wish you posted that first. Serendipity had ext 4 lag fix, custom recovery. All custom roms have custom recovery that can understand ext 4. Stock dots not so you should of disabled lag fix first.
Get into dl mode try all ported on pc to get odin to recognize
Can't even get in download mode.
I had tried flashing the SlimBeam ROM (coming from Helly Bean, which worked great), but got the perpetual AT&T logo of death. This seemed to be an issue with several other users, as pointed out in the SlimBean thread.
To resolve this, I flashed back to stock with a Heimdall One-Click utility. Stock now boots great and the phone is functional (albeit now running a very old version of Android). I was looking to root again to go back to Helly Bean. However, I can no longer enter recovery mode with either the 3-button method or ADB. When the phone is told to enter recovery, it just hangs at the AT&T logo, just like when it was trying to boot SlimBean.
I can restart the phone into the stock ROM and I can also successfully enter download mode. Recovery just isn't happening.
Any ideas on what I can try at this point? I'm on a Mac but have access to a PC if necessary.
Have you tried flashing a stock rom with bootloaders? I hate suggesting that, but sometimes re-flashing the bootloaders makes a difference.
Just make sure you're careful to have a solid connection throughout the flash.

Which stock did you flash back to? I've only done it (but lots of times) with Odin-one-click, not Heimdal but not all the one-click packages contain CWM.
You could try one of these:

Ah, I don't remember if the Heimdall package came with a bootloader (I did this earlier today at the office, and I'm home now). When I was restoring earlier, Odin wouldn't recognize that my phone was connected in download mode...hence me using Heimdall. I'll give Odin another shot right now since I'm up and running with stock.
There are Heimdall packages with bootloaders, if you need it.
Just remember that Heimdall will write its drivers to the port you installed it to - if you plug in your phone to that port and try to fire up Odin, Odin won't see it.
I'm on a different computer than when I used Heimdall earlier, so Odin is now recognizing the phone.
New problem: The process won't get past "SetupConnection". I'm currently trying out "I897UCKJ3 Stock with BL".
Rah rah rah rah rah.

Well, I'll be damned: The Epilogue
Got it!
It was simply a matter of me continuing to try other USB ports (my computer has 4). I tried one that previously didn't work, and it suddenly did. Not exactly sure what changed, but persistence paid off! I suppose power tolerance is potentially different for each port? (...in the same vein of it's better to plug into the back of the computer rather than a keyboard. I digress.)
Anyway, after Odin both recognized my phone and got past the "SetupConnection" step, I proceeded to install "KI2 w/ Bootloaders & Boog's KernO". This included ClockworkMod built-in, so I thought it'd be a good option. Sure enough, I was finally able to boot into recovery without any sort of trouble, then proceeded to install the new CM10 nightly.
Everything works. Thanks for the replies and help, everyone!
So basically I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (i896) and it was running 2.1, so I decided to try and upgrade to the newest stock available for the captivate (which is 2.3.5). I had to use heimdall because I bought the phone used and it was rooted and possibly running a custom ROM so kies is not an option. When I put the phone in download mode the computer wouldn't recognize it (I'm on a Mac). I did alot of reading online and I couldn't find a solution. So I decided to flash a new ROM hoping that this would solve the problem.
So I flashed a random ICS ROM. But with this ROM I couldn't even access download mode. I tried a 3 button fix, I tried to use terminal to boot into download mode, and I tried to use ADB from my computer; nothing worked. So I figured I would flash another ROM (this time I used Hellybean) but when I tried to install it, a bunch of code ran on the screen and it said "installation aborted". Before attempting to flash this ROM I completely wiped the phone (i formatted the system from the mounts menu in CWM) and now the phone is showing the at&t logo, then going to black, then some code runs on the screen, then it goes black and starts the whole thing again.
I cant get to recovery or download mode.
Is it bricked? How do I fix this?
I don't know what I did wrong! any help would be appreciated.
P.s. I would really like to avoid building a jig because I feel like Im not too good at that kind of stuff....but if that's what it comes to...
Thanx in advance

I've tried all of those methods except for using a jig. Is it possible that while flashing a ROM my phone somehow lost download mode?
Also if all of those combos didn't work is it likely that a jig will work?
Looks like you started reading after you messed up the phone. Update instructions say clearly that you need GB bootloaders before you proceed to ICS or JB. You provide no information what exactly ROM you started from, what GB ROM you attempted to flash (with or without bootloaders), what exactly ICS you flashed after, what "some code" runs on the screen now, etc. It's a lot of guessing here. If bootloaders are messed up, than you won't be able to fix your phone at home. I have never seen a problem you describe, so wait for someone with more experience to stop by.
I got it going! All it needed was a jig and then I was able to flash stock GB with bootloaders.
Thanks for the help.
Good news! :good:
I have a Cappy and gingerbread boot loaders come in three flavours i897, i896 and i9000 and they're backwards compatible with froyo and éclair roms. Don't mix froyo and gb boot loaders though you will hard brick your device. I have i896(Canadian) boot loaders and when I flash kk4 [email protected] Odin gingerbread my "i896" boot screen is garbled image of pixels until I flash the proper param.lfs file to match. Hope this helps. BTW I have a jig as well and for all galaxy devices it's a must.
