Up until this point, I haven't had any issues with my phone, sound or otherwise.
Once I upgraded to Darky's 9.1, I could no longer hear my "touch" acknowledgments or media sounds.. I.E. Youtube videos have no sound at all.. UNLESS, I plug in headphones.. Then for some reason all of the sounds want to work.. through the phone speaker. Odd right?
No other roms seem to give me issues, and even going down to 8.X solves this.. I'm assuming it has to do with something in Darky's (Obviously..) and, more than likely Voodoo. Is anyone else having any problems like this? Should I maybe try to disable Voodoo and see what happens?
Basic Rundown..
Ringtones play, notifications go off, yet, when I try to watch videos or stream ringtones through ringtone apps, I have no audio, UNLESS I plug in headphones; However that makes the sound come out of the headphones + phone speaker.
Stuck.
Anybody?

I had this issue, although my Captivate had sound working for a short time, but while selecting a ringtone or notification tone it cut out. A reboot fixed it once, after that it still won't work. I noticed that the sound DID work the volume was super low. I had to hold the speaker directly on my ear to hear anything. I've just done a master clear, and Odin 1-Click, reflashed 9.3 and I'm about to do the CWM "part 2" again. This time I'm going to try a different kernel. I'll let you know if it works. If not, I'll have to jump to a different ROM. I was using Speedmod selected from Darky's ROM Manager if that makes any difference.
Ditto. Just flashed Darky's 10.1 and I'm having the exact same issues minus the headphones (which I have yet to test out).
when it comes to speaker sound darky rom sucks big time till date.rest of it rocks like a rockstar.

I just upgraded to 2.2 for the Captivate using the ODIN3, and everything is working great except sound through the headphone jack.
Music, navigation plays through the headset, but phone calls and notifications don't.
How am I supposed to hear them with music blearing over it?
Anyone know of a fix? I checked the settings and I don't see an option for it.

Search would have told you that this is a known issue - 2.2 is Beta.
There is no known fix.

You are lucky, mine doesnt let me even hear media or music thru the 3.5 mm!
???
I have 2.2 installed and don't have any issue with the headset.
Both music and phone calls work great.
BTW I'm using the stock hands free, the one that came with the phone.
My bluetooth works fine, it's the headphone jack I'm talking about.
i am having the same issue after upgrading via odin3. I also have to click the home button to clear a read text message or else it reminds me again.

No voice out of the "3.5 mm"?
Yeah that was a LOLWUT post. And that's been on the phone since I've had it, it's intentional, I think. Because you have to press the back button to clear the notification, because when you click on messages again, it stays at the same spot and the notification stays in the title bar because you didn't clear it.
i hear sound but i dont hear voicalls or notifications. if im listening to music with my sony headphones and someone calls i dont the ring through the headphones or the voice. i have to use the handset

when i was on 2.1, if i clicked a message from the notifiaction bar it would bring to the thread and mark it as read. froyo is not doing that. is there a way to fix it
IDK what 2.1 you had.
The one I had, I had to press back to clear the notification. It still does the same thing on 2.2.
It could be a bug, it is a beta.

I missed reading that in the notes.
I've searched quite a bit and never ran accross anyone mentioning it.
My headphones play music, notifications, everything just great, but in call volume is terribly low (NOT on headphones, but when I route the aux cable to my stereo in my car)
I had the issue initially in 2.1 from stock ROM, but managed to fix it somehow, and I can't figure out how. I tried all the evice level fixes, eve 6 different audio control apps off the market.
My typical setup is that I never use earbuds or headphones. I plug the aux cable into my headphone jack and run it sraight into my car CD player in aux mode. It plays everything at normal levels EXCEPT in call volume. If this is a bug, I'll just have to deal with it then.
So I have been trying many of the latest Gingerbread roms as I had been with Froyo and Eclair. Recently, I went from Cog5v1 over to a CM7/MIUI rom and noticed that the headphone icon was always in the notification bar and I had no sound from the speakers. The internal speaker seemed to work properly, as I could hear ringtones, notifications, volume rocker, etc...but no system sounds, music and such. Also, when I receive a call, i cannot hear anything until i hit the spekerphone button and then the speaker works. Additionally, while on MIUI, I switched kernals and the problem inverted, meaning the speaker worked as it should but I had no headphone response at all. Since this problem occurred, I have flashed back to stock, master cleared, flashed froyo, flashed stock GB, and many others always flashing to stock in between. Now with every rom I flash I have the constant "headphone on" problem. Others have suggested hardware, but the speaker does work (speakerphone and when I change kernals and invert the problem), so im thinking it is more likely software, firmware, or bootloader related.
Has anyone experienced something like this before or could suggest something to try to fix the problem? I use headphones for music and audiobooks everyday, but if the phone cannot handle regular phonecalls, its pretty much useless to me.
First, Bootloaders and firmware ARE software listing them separately is just redundant.
just because the speaker works does not mean it's not hardware related. Sounds like an issue in the headphone jack. Try and spray it out with some air duster perhaps?

Hi,
a few days ago the volume randomly became UBER low. Soo I thought of it as a problem in the firmware (darky's r4). That rom was kinda rubbish; so instead; I flashed dlev 5.0. Awesome rom by the way. And then, over night, when I woke up again; the volume became really low again.
I have no idea how to fix this, rebooting doesnt seem to help.
Anyone have any ideas?
Assuming you're on a kernel that supports the voodoo sound, you might want to try the voodoo control app (I believe it's in the Market). Once you have it installed, you can put a shortcut on your desktop to the headphone amp widget, and that will let you pull the volume up again.
Not a permanent solution, I admit, but probably quicker than digging down several menu levels.

I plugged in my headphones; and everything is fine.
So it seems like the problem is just with the loudspeaker.
I can't even hear when someone calls
You said you installed a new rom - by any chance, did you restore apps with Tibu? If so, did you restore any system data?
I only ask because if you had restored some system data, it might have restored a bad audio setting that is affecting the external speaker when the headphones aren't plugged in.
I know that as part of the Voodoo sound control, you can tell it to drop the volume level if there is a change in whether the headphones are plugged in or not (as an ear saver or to prevent blaring sound when the headphones become accidentally unplugged).
If you didn't do any restoring, I would just double-check the volume level that is set in the audio menu. If it's all the way up, and you're still having sound issues, then I think that a faulty speaker (like you suggested) is probably the case.

I had this problem starting on darky's rom. Didn't use tibu or any sort of backup software; installed everything fresh and new.
Checked audio levels; and everything is on max.
Where in voodoo do I tell it it lower volume when headphones are plugged in?
Thanks
Er.... the loudspeaker just randomly started working fine again.....
I bet it will become weird in a few minutes though :S

In the voodoo control app, if you have the "map volume keys hack" activated, two settings below that is "jack plug-in safety".
Every kernel supports voodoo sound!

Haw Haw Haw... I gave my phone a good spanking. Seems like something is loose near the back key/search key. A few good hits and the speaker works again.
Ha!

Nothing like a good dose of non-passive hardware reconstruction to get things working again.
Believe it or not this is actually abbery common problem with this phone. The speaker will stop...then you press firmly on the speaker then it starts again...

I'm running xron cm7 on my touchpad. I've noticed a few things about sounds that I wonder if it's just a fact of life or something that's fixable. 1-I can't seem to get sound to come from the headphone jack. If I plug something in, sound stops from the speakers but nothing comes out via the jack. 2-If I have an app that plays sounds even with the screen off, it gets this kind of high pitched squeal/feedback. This is happening with music apps and the AmbiSci sound apps. Are both of these facts of life on a touchpad running Android?
Do any ROMS currently allow the front facing camera to work?

Camera still does not work.
To get sound on earphones, plug them in before starting the app you want to listen to. That works for me.
The distorted sounds have been reported by many, I guess I'm lucky, I don't have that problem.

Thanks Chicle I'll try that out. Maybe it's a rom thing for the distorted sound. Which one are you using?

I'm using Cherry Kang, with kupdate kernel. Oc to 1.7 max and 384 min.
Sometimes I use the unofficial cyanogenmod nightlies, when cherry has not been updated for a while.
Unfortunately, the distorted sound has been reported on a bunch of different roms.
I use the nightlies, and before that Alpha2, and haven't had a problem with sound - I watch stuff with MXPlayer, listen to Spotify, and everything, with and without headphones, no problems at all. Currently on the 20120402 nightly, still working great for sound.
As for Camera, well, we gotta wait for HP to release the sources for it, unfortunately. It's not something that's fixable until then. If you need a camera, you gotta use WebOS.
Earphone trick worked great. The sound thing is odd. I didn't get the scratchy sounds when I would plug the headphones in, turn on the AmbiSci app, pull up a sound and then turn off the screen. If I do the same with just the speakers running though, scratchy sounds. Makes me think it could be more hardware related than software.
Well . . this is even weirder. I have the volume down a little low. If I raise up the volume, I hit a part where the squeal starts. That seems strange.
Yesterday I was playing some music through the speakers on my phone and the sound started to crackle, I just thought it was the app playing up so I just turned it off and thought nothing of it.
Later when I went to use the phone it didn't have any sound, so I tried adjusting the volumes up and down, re-flashing CM and clearing caches in vein. I then plugged my headphones in to see if they worked and found I could only hear them a little bit with the volumes set to max.
I'm now assuming the speaker amp has blown somehow, but not wanting to give up I tried calling someone and found the sound worked just fine for voice and so now I have no idea what the issue is.
Has anyone else had this problem? and how did you fix it?

Try going back to stock rom, and seeing if it works then
