[Q]-Sound question and camera question - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running xron cm7 on my touchpad. I've noticed a few things about sounds that I wonder if it's just a fact of life or something that's fixable. 1-I can't seem to get sound to come from the headphone jack. If I plug something in, sound stops from the speakers but nothing comes out via the jack. 2-If I have an app that plays sounds even with the screen off, it gets this kind of high pitched squeal/feedback. This is happening with music apps and the AmbiSci sound apps. Are both of these facts of life on a touchpad running Android?
Do any ROMS currently allow the front facing camera to work?

Camera still does not work.
To get sound on earphones, plug them in before starting the app you want to listen to. That works for me.
The distorted sounds have been reported by many, I guess I'm lucky, I don't have that problem.

Thanks Chicle I'll try that out. Maybe it's a rom thing for the distorted sound. Which one are you using?

I'm using Cherry Kang, with kupdate kernel. Oc to 1.7 max and 384 min.
Sometimes I use the unofficial cyanogenmod nightlies, when cherry has not been updated for a while.
Unfortunately, the distorted sound has been reported on a bunch of different roms.

I use the nightlies, and before that Alpha2, and haven't had a problem with sound - I watch stuff with MXPlayer, listen to Spotify, and everything, with and without headphones, no problems at all. Currently on the 20120402 nightly, still working great for sound.
As for Camera, well, we gotta wait for HP to release the sources for it, unfortunately. It's not something that's fixable until then. If you need a camera, you gotta use WebOS.

Earphone trick worked great. The sound thing is odd. I didn't get the scratchy sounds when I would plug the headphones in, turn on the AmbiSci app, pull up a sound and then turn off the screen. If I do the same with just the speakers running though, scratchy sounds. Makes me think it could be more hardware related than software.
Well . . this is even weirder. I have the volume down a little low. If I raise up the volume, I hit a part where the squeal starts. That seems strange.

Any Pandora users running Froyo

I have noticed that when I use Pandora on Froyo the audio quality is significantly worse than it was on stock 2.1 or cyanogenmod 5.0.7.1.
I am aware of the High and Normal settings in the preferences however it does not help.
Under 2.1 (stock and cyan) Normal would sound alright and High would sound fantastic.
Under 2.2 (froyo) High sounds bad and normal is horrible.
Has anyone else noticed the sound quality drop in pandora moving to Froyo?
This is independent of the song being streamed and is very noticeable when using good headphones.
Are you using the stock 2.2 kernel or one with the audioboost patch?
I have tried using multiple kernels including stock, cyan 2.6.34 and ravens avs 2.6.33.4 kernels. Does not effect the problem at all.
I'm running Paul's pre-root (including 4.06 radio and kernel that came with it) and sounds great to me, same as before (CM 5.0.6+oc/uv+audio mod+desire cam). In fact I'm not sure if I've reset it to stay on High with 3g yet since I updated. (Tmo USA N1 if it makes a difference ).
Wish I could give helpful input other than its possible. I know I wiped everything I could and flashed it over CM.
Running Paul's root with IntersectRaven's .34 kernel and Pandora sounds as good as it did with his kernel on CM5.0.6.
Haven't noticed a difference.

same here.
Hmmm, I will look into this more and report back if I find anything.
Thanks for the help guys.
I as well noticed this problem, tried resting/full wipe, restarting, toggling settings to no results. Terrible audio quality even in high. Other sounds are not affected it seems. Running kernel that the update brought.
Am I the only that has actually plugged the phone into an fm transmitter to use with my car stereo? Of course i am, you kids all have your bluetooth radios and your xms and syriusnessess. When using Pandora, the bass is much much louder in froyo than it was in all previous roms. Kernel with modded sound or not, the bass is big. So, yes, the sound is very different from what it used to be. Mids are too high and highs are meh... nonexistent. It doesn't sound bad on the phone or through earbuds, but unless you like rap, you probably won't like the sound coming through your car. But, I don't think that's anything some decent equilizer software can't fix. Personally, I think the sound is an improvement despite the focus on the lower end of the spectrum. In previous versions, it was to light and airy with no lowend.

I am on Froyo, and I notice it.
Also, I notice that songs frequently stop playing in the middle or near the end, and then Pandora seems to fail to recover and skips to the next song. Does that happen for you?

The same thing happens to me while on 3G, and happens mostly while moving. If I stay still, I can play continuously with no problems. But while walking or driving, I usually can't finish a song before it skips. This also happens on any other internet radio app, like DroidLive and Slacker.

Yes, I've noted that, as well as fairly frequent brief pauses that do resume and continue to play the current song without skipping to the next. (The combination of my ears and my stereo system are not sufficiently discriminating for me to detect any difference in the audio quality, though.)
I've noticed that I can't control the next song, play/pause with the Bluetooth controls anymore. I hit next to skip a song and my music player starts playing while Pandora is still playing.
I use Pandora often in my car and I also can confirm the audio quality is now horrible for me on Froyo.
If I nandroid back to my CM backup it sounds fine but under Froyo it sounds horrible.
I also have noticed a decrease in audio quality, but that might be due to changing ROMs from CM to Stock Froyo leak... (don't really know how the builds differer audio wise)
@ maxawesome
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing problems with Pandora. Often my music just stops... sometimes it won't continue streaming either... It worked flawlessly with CM 5.0.6 (though i only use it in my car...)
I am also confirming that after the Paul's Froyo zip update the audio quality has decreased dramatically. It almost seems like the sample rate is much lower affecting mostly higher frequency sounds like voice or instruments that produce higher frequencies. The bass sounds ok, but there is alway a small hiss noticable.
Also, when my screen turns off while Pandora is playing I noticed audio drop out over the BT connection. When I force the screen on this does not seem to occur.
Had the desire rom on it before and audio was stunning, almost CD quality.
Hope someone finds a fix or workaround soon.

Agreed, happy to know I am not alone with the issue. For now I have reverted to Cyan 5.0.7.1.
i don't know about pandora, but the stock music app sounds a ton better to me, both through headphones and through my car speakers (using the POS 3.5mm to tape adapter, lol)
The other day I plugged my N1 to my car and noticed the quality was a lot worse. At first I didn't think much about it or even the fact that it was because of Froyo until I came upon this thread. But yeah, the quality is a lot worse now. I am thinking Pandora needs a update.

[Q] Horrible sounding audio

I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing really bad audio quality on the captivate, or if anyone knows what might be causing it?
I tried looking for info but all i found was regarding bad audio on froyo.
Im running 2.1 JH3, and I had the problem with JF6. I was using pandora and it sounded horrible (with both roms). I tried some other audio from the web today and it still sounds bad. Any ideas?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Go into the settings for pandora and check the better audio quality box. I've noticed with out that pandora sucks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I tried that, and it isn't just with Pandora. This is the only thing making me miss my iPhone....
Is it like cracking and popping?
Also you should try these threads

What I'm hearing, is that when I some music files, it sounds like it is really low quality. Like an mp3 compressed to 48k (or less). The singing in a song is hard to hear, it all just sounds muddled. Listening to music in the browser and Pandora both had this effect. I haven't loaded any mp3's yet (been busy learning and rooting, etc) but I have downloaded a few ringtones, and they don't seem to experience this issue.
Listening to Pandora has been both through the built in speaker, and the headphone jack to a speaker system. Horrible on both. Also, I was using Google's Listen to listen to the most recent episode of the Engadget Podcast, and with the volume all the way up on both the Captivate and the sound system, I still couldn't really hear it. I unplugged and listened to it over the phone's speaker, and it was audible enough to hear, although not at all loud, even at max volume.
Thanks a million for the links to those threads! I searched and searched and couldn't find anything relevant to my issue. Did you have prior knowledge of those threads, or did you find them by searching? If so, I'd like to know what keywords you used (if you don't mind). I'm always trying to improve my ability to help myself, so I'd appreciate it. It's late now, so I'm going to fully read those threads and try the fixes in each tomorrow. I'll report back. Also, I'll test my wife's Captivate to see if it has the same problem. **** it, I'll do it now.
Results: Pandora sounds fine through the internal speaker, when plugged into the speaker system (iPod dock w/aux in) it immediately sounds like ****. Perhaps the bad quality is only when plugged in, I might have just thought the internal speaker sounded bad because it's tiny. I'll retest my phone in the morning.
Well i just kinda stumbled onto the thread when i was looking to see the source of the crackling and popping I sometimes hear. Though you could scroll down to any page of a thread and see the tags associated with it.
And to me it honestly sounds like a singular issue with your captivate. The sound is loud and clear on mine. Even Pandora is fine for me
I did some more experimenting. At first I had hope about the headphones EQ fix, because I figured out that it only happens on audio that is plugged in to the ipod dock. When using a headphone to tape adapter in my older boom box, the audio sounds fine. I'm going to try switching out the cables and try the other input on the dock.
And, it happens on both mine and my wife's phone.
Thanks for the info!
OK, I'm an idiot. It was the 3.5mm cable (exacerbated by the samsung EQ issue). Thanks everyone for the help.

CM9 Sound issues

I'm sure most of you will be aware with the horrible sound issue that plagued webos after the 3.0.3 update where the touchpad would cut all sound without notice if headphones were plugged in or out or if you just looked at the device funny..
On cm9 however, I'm experiencing an issue with the sound that is worse. Whilst watching youtube videos or doing any activity where a sound is played, the speaker often "pops" once in the way you can faintly hear speakers even there is no input, regardless of whether headphones are plugged in or not. From then, the speaker no longer plays any sound of any sort.
Does anybody have a fix for this? I just lose sound randomly and sometimes even a reboot doesnt fix it. I know that CM9 is 'fullofbugs' and that the audio libs are a mess/broken, but I would just like to know if this is a common issue with a known fix! Thanks!

I am experiencing this as well running AOKP M4b28 - it only happens (or as much as I've noticed) when the screen goes to sleep while I have music playing.
Glad I'm not the only one.

I have the issue when the screen is off and volume is >= 50% Never had any sound probs with WebOS that I noticed.
From what I've read, it has been addressed and is a know issue. You've got to remember that this wan't meant to be an Android tablet, there WILL be bugs. They might eventually get fixed but, I'm not one to complain, I've got ICS on a tab that was never supposed to have Android to begin with lol

[Q] Audio quality on phone jack of nook hd+

I'm currently using the carbon rom, but the problem came up with the early kitkat releases. Basically the hd+ speaker seems to work pretty well, but when I plug a pair of headphones / in ear / everything, the audio becomes incredibly bad.
I don't have nandroid backups, sigh. How do I restore the audio out quality?

You could boot into recovery, make a full backup, then try any rom flavor and if you don't like at any time then just restore and continue where you left off. Titanium backup free for quick app restore in any new installed rom if you like it.
Headphones sound normal on cm official feb 4th build. Could be carbon rom.

Thanks, it seems to have worked . If anything bad happens, I'll post here.
Nope, audio problem is still there. I used a pair of big headphones and sound was somewhat better, but when I used the in ear headphones, the bad, noisy quality revealed itself in all its dark magnificence.
So we can somewhat exclude it's a rom related issue, I think.
So the problem did not solve. Any other thoughts?
I had same problem with audio from the phone jack. Made high bitrate mp3 sound like 64kbps stream. I honestly don't know what I did to fix it. I think it was just updating to a newer cm11 nightly build.
hello,i'm experiencing the same problem too.especially when i turn to volume up,i try to fix it using apps like v4a but not a real success so far.i'd like to somehow a fix for this prob.
Hello people. It's somewhat heartwarming to know that there's someone else that has got the same problems. I've, too, tried to fix this with V4A, but without success.
Leapinlar told me that going from jb to kk and getting back can be problematic and we should probably try to wipe system manually (CWM>wipe system).
I'm currently using a Carbon JB ROM. I will try to re-install it today, by performing every single wipe available and report here to let you know the outcome. Wish me luck :silly:
So I did all wipes and installed cm11 but the problem is still there, even wiping system manually. I don't really know what to do

Did you try a different music player? Try something like Rocket Player. Also, maybe you should flash pure stock, just so you can better isolate the problem. If it's still there with pure stock, then it might be a hardware issue. If it isn't there, then you know it's the ROM or some type of app conflict.
I have CM11 nightlies on my HD and notice no audio problems whatsoever. I am pretty picky about audio, love the sound on my HD, and would have gone right back to stock or something else if I found any audio problem with CM11.

NEW DETAILS: sound quality is actually normal. With a pair of headphones I have no problems, BUT when I plug in the stock in-ear earphones from my sony ericsson xperia arc s sound quality lowers significantly.
Being that I study audio engineering and I'm becoming more and more experienced with sound, the sound output is really similar to sound in which there are some huge phase cancellation problems going on.
So the volume of different frequencies lowers significantly as they just get cancelled out of the output, forcing me to raise the volume until I hear a really bad, full of background noise sound.
However, when I use the earphones on my nook, and keep pressed the headset button used to pause/skip tracks or to respond to an incoming call (when I use it on the smartphone), sound goes back to normal! If I release it, sound goes back to being bad.
So, my theory is that when we connect a common TRS connector (like the one used by my headphones) we have no problems with the audio output. However, when we connect a TRRS connector (like the one used by my in-ear earphones), some bad stuff happens, like, bad circuitry stuff.
So I think that the TRRS connector is either not compatible hardware-wise with the nook (wouldn't surprise me, as it wasn't designed to be used as a phone), or the nook software is simply not correctly programmed to handle a TRRS type connector, like the ones used on smartphones

I wonder if your Sony earphones are somewhat proprietary in their wiring. TRRS seems to work fine with a generic pair of Scosche headphones I use on my tablets and Nexus S phone. The button works too, unlike on my 2012 Nexus 7.

I use high end earbuds and Bose headphones, the nook hd+ on cm10.2 or cm11 sounds great. Cleaner than any other android I've used.
Are you at max volume or 2nd to max? Those have been very slightly crackly since verygreen bumped audio gain back in august. those settings are in audio.primary.ovation.so. I edited mine.
I don't use my nook as a phone, seems ridiculous.

Lollipop broke the Audio?

Updated to Lollipop yesterday. Of course I'm using Sony's official update and not CM12. So yeah I didn't bother to.watch any videos or listen to music because I updated my phone very late at night. But today, I realised the Audio seems broken. How is it broken? Well, I play a YouTube video at max volume. Seems fine but a little soft for being at max. As soon as I drag it down just a bit, it's like impossible to hear anything. When it reaches half volume, it feels like the minumum volume and the minimum volume feels like it's muted. Anyone have the same problem?
Tl;dr: Can't hear jack **** on near max volume

Umm, nope, I can notice cause I consume a lot of media on my phone.
Weird thing is, bluetooth is weird. I use it in my car, and in KK, when I made a call, it'd change to the phone audio on its own. Now it stays on bluetooth audio until the call connects and then switches to the phone audio mode. This was the case even with AOSP 5.0 ROMs :/ it's weirdly inconvenient cause if I'm using the aux, I won't know if the call is about to be connected, cause I can't hear the ringtone on the call :|
I'm using locked rooted Kitkat,
updated via Sony PC Companion without wiping anything
after the updating to lollipop, it charges so slow, even when it's turned off
I used all the chargers here.
I'm planning to go back to kitkat without losing any app data.
I have no recovery and not rooted in lollipop. What can I do?
sound is definitely broken, because xloud is missing, clearaudio+ isnt working neither.
