Nobody seems to be able to answer this:
What controls the "special" letters in the STOCK SAMSUNG keyboard? i.e. æåø or other characters that most countries have in their alphabet.
I wonder about this because i have tried just transfering the same keyboard to different roms. On the stock js5 i get the characters, but not on other custom roms, so there must been some other files that control this.
Remember, before u answer this... i said stock samsung keyboard, and not any other keyboard that might have the characters
Peace
i dun have an answer but .. i think those rom/kernel makers in the development forum are more likely to be able to answer this ....
guess i am smart ;P got it
Not that I am smart, just interested: what was the answer?
It's simple.
There are particular letters that have a '...' after then. For example, if you press down A, then the popup is 'A...' and a long press opens out all the options.
But not all keys have alternate symbols. Only The top line, ie, qwertyuiop, and A,S,C,N and a few others.
Check it out!
edit: Im on stock 2.2 DDJP6 by the way.
I guess i'm not smart, couse i don't get it.
Don't ask dumb question to smart people

The title of this thread seems weird to me, where did you post asking about this and nobody was able to answer your question?
It's very simply : special characters and T9 dictionaries are in system/T9DB folder -about 4mb size.Samsung keyboard also require lib file LibXT9core.so

I hear some people almost never use the qwerty keyboard and just use the numkeys with t9 instead.
So, how often do you use your qwerty? Do you use it at all?
I use the keyboard a lot. If I need enter more than one word, I use the qwerty. I write many lines of notes, IM... Now I dont wait until I come to computer and reply to mails imidiately. It's really useful for me.
(Maybe you could make a poll. )
lots
I use mine everyday. Got free sms's every time i load my sim so i type a lot and spam all my m8's hehehe

Me. I hate numeric keypad with T9 - vote for keyboard! 1+
I disabled the XT9 garbage (it was so annoying with the qwerty). The keyboard is why i bought the phone.
It's good though having the phone pad for quick input. I used to have a Wizard and hated having to slide the keyboard out every time I needed to input something (I know there's a soft keyboard on PPC but they're far too fiddly!).
One other thing I like about the Wings QWERTY keyboard is that you can access most of the secondary keys by a long press instead of having to press the Fn key first. I thought it only applied to the number section but discovered by accident that it works on all keys with an alphabetical base key.
All I need to do now is work out how to map different function keys - I use '&' a lot but having to press Fn+Sym, then navigate the symbol grid is a pain.
I have same problem. I am spanish and I use spanis characters that can only be found in Symbol screen... and it takes too much time!. Any way to make shortcuts?
****ing Never
I use the Resco Keyboard Pro.
Does Resco Kb Pro works for Smartphones? I have only found it for PPC... and idea where I cand find it? How does it solve the problem?
Thanks indeed!

yeah your'e right need a ****in stylus. sorry went brain dead there.
There should be a way to redefine little blue simbols in keyboard buttons so I cand obtain spanish accent or spanish N instead of, i.e, ; or whatever.
Any other idea?
Thanks for your try, anyway...
sometimes i type fast and then the keyboard cant catch up with me. its really annoying. why cant the stupid processor not keep up with the input?? i also noticed that while im typing fast, some letters are missing.
does this happen to you too??
is there any solution?
I really didn't notice that; I am not very fast typing... my problem is that I can not type with XT9 while I am looking to the screen to ensure that the word choosen is the word that I want to writte... well, I can, but it's a very slow procerss.
This is ehy I like to writte with ABC, but having the option to input spanish characters in a fast mode ...

Is that a special kind that you insert somewhere?
Hello !
I've got some trouble with the way you can put an accent on a character using the TyTN II Keyboard.
The way it has been designed you have to writhe the letter you want to put an accent on (i.e. e for instance) and then cycle through the different accented possibility for this letter.
So far so good... BUT what drives me crazy is that the cycle doesn't always start from the same point (making a fast keyboarding very difficult).
Would you have already typed once an é (typing e then fn+space) and would you want to type another é, you would have to type e then fn+space TWICE.. go figure...
Is there a way to change this curious way (maybe toying with the registry values) ?
That's quite annoying when you write in a language with many accents (for the record I use a French Orange TyTN II and é is definitely the most common accented letter in French).
Thanks !
I haven't got this problem, it always starts with the same accent op top of the previous letter.
Hi:
While not really on topic, I have a somewhat similar question. And this seemed like an appropriate thread to post it in
For some reason the Fn Space method doesn't seem to work for me at all. For example, I enter n, then Fn Space, the first time I press space the n becomes an N (capital), if I press space again (while still holding down Fn, it just enters a space. In order to find it I must actually go into Fn, Ok.
Do I have a defective keyboard, am I soing domething wrong?
Any ideas?
Thanks!

How do I enter an ñ?
I have looked through all the choices (Fn, Ok), and I don't see it there. I was able to find other Ns, but not Ñ, I did find only an ~ but no way to insert it over a normal n.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I remember some thread about this, you need to edit some file that contains the letters. Unfortunately I cant tell you more, you need to search it somewhere here.

Thanks so much for your reply. I actually did find the letters I needed in Fn, Ok.
My problem is I still can't get the Fn space method to work.

Actually I just realize that I wanted to reply to the first quote and not to you. It had to look funny that I replied to different question then yours but in my post was your question. What a fool I am.
Hey, do u guys have the anserws to theese questions?
1. I want to choose for how long the green lamp, which indicates "new message/sms", shall blink. Now the option is "grey" and it's set to 5minutes. But you can't change the time. What should I do to set the time?
2. I've tried all the pre-installed keyboards that comes with the phone. But I'm not really happy with it. One must, is that it should contain the charachters "åäö" (a swedish keyboard).
3. Can I set the vibrator to a personal setting? Like now, if I get a sms/message, my phone only vibrate once. Which is really hard to notice, when I got it in my pocket. So can I somehow make it vibrate more?
4. And how do I get my "sms-wordlist" to work?! Everytime I add a diffrent word in my "sms-wordlist" it disappear a time later. Which is really enoying. How do I fix it?
Thx for answering!

Regarding a keyboard with Swedish layout, try FingerKeyboard
I use it with Danish layout but you can also have it with eg. Swedish layout.

otherwise I'm thinking of buying a new phone, because the sms-function is at my greatest use..

There have been posts elsewhere on the Forum on all the issues you raise - for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606212.
I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread very recently about changing the vibration settings - if I did a search, I'm sure I could find it in a couple of minutes. Someone's responded to your question about keyboards - and, on adding words to T9's dictionary, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557320&highlight=T9+words+adding might help.
Usually, for most of the niggling issues, there is either a simple setting change (which may involve adding/changing registry keys) or CABs that can be downloaded and tried. Take a look - there's a wealth of material here waiting to be searched!
thx so much i've tried to search on xda, but I kinda failed ^^
I'll try the links and come back with some respons

Right now, I've fixed the led-lamp, t9-wordlist and fingerboard. But I've tried to search xda for how to do your own custom vibration when receiving sms, and I've just found one... (can't post url:s yet) here is the topic "Vibration pattern for Incoming Calls, SMS and EMail "
but the "program" is pritty old and the developer doesn't write how to uninstall it if something goes wrong. So can you try to find something else, that might be better?
Edit:
Then I've found the names "SMS POPUP" and "DGAlert" but none of them is available for install/dwl at xda...

Hey guys I looked around and couldn't figure it out. In the stock ( not rooted) SMS application I no longer have a valid dictionary. Every word seems to be missing. Even simple words like this, the, it, etc etc. Any clue how to fix this or where to look?

Have you looked in your language and keyboard settings? I'm not sure if the stock and market keyboards share the same dictonary, go download the ics keyboard from market. Choose it in your language and keyboard settings. Then do a long press in your internet search bar and click input, then chose ics keyboard. Not sure if it'll work, but with a try.
You didn't accidentally change the language did you? Still says EN to the left of your comma key?

There are other available keyboards that are more like stock. Look for smart keyboard. At least I think that's the name of it.

I don't have it too and I think is normal!
I you see it is correcting the words right, even if you use two different languages in the same sentence

unfortunately it is...
the word guessing is much more accurate if you have just one language. especially when you're swiping fast and sloppy, chances are much better that it recognizes the right word with just one language selected. if i need another language i was used to just press that button.
guess i have to flash the old keyboard then
