Hey everyone.
So first, huge thanks to the entire SGS community for making it so easy for an utter noob like myself to build a kernel for the vibrant.
So, anyway, what is this kernel anyway since so many other talented devs (eugene, ttabbal, morfic, etc.) have already released tons of kernels?
Simply, this is basically a ~99% stock samsung kernel, built from recently released KA6 source, with a few additions:
Voodoo lagfix with red clockwork recovery
Voodoo Sound v4
Voodoo Color - (added in test 2)
Backlight Notification mod
CIFS support - (added in test 2, skitz in irc asked for this)
331mb ram hack, honestly, I don't see a difference from stock 311 config, but whatever.
Plans for the future:
none, sorry, kind of tired of my Vibrant, back to trying to trade for a G2. Besides, cmenard did a better job at making a stock+voodoo kernel with his "Overstocked" builds here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967861
Download and flash with clockworkmod, its safe to flash with voodoo enabled (I did several times tonight.) The zip files provided here don't include BLN control, you need to download it from the market to get the latest version. Personally, I'd say buy the pro app (I did), Neldar deserves your $2 in support of how awesome this mod is.
Kernel versions can be checked using my modified Settings.apk here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977211
Huge thanks to:
Supercurio - for voodoo, and so much else that generally makes kernel building simple for the SGS!
Neldar - for the awesome, AWESOME backlight notification mod. Go buy his pro app to support him!
ttabbal - for helping me with some config issues, and generally putting up with all my noob questions and behavior
morfic - for likewise helping me with config and and also putting up with me being a noob
eugene373 - uhm, just for being here and helping out, I probably would have returned my vibrant long ago if it hadn't been for his original roms, etc.
sombionix & teamwhiskey - for nice, fast, stable base-roms for my daily use
camalot, the3dman, zimp, et. al. - for being generally awesome people and for helping re-kindle my interest in android =)

SOURCE
Didn't realize this was such a huge deal, since I didn't write ANYTHING at all myself, but whatever, thanks for making android not-fun again.
https://bitbucket.org/jocelynmallon/cwk_ka6/overview
UPDATE 3/11/2011
Added the wifi fix by cmenard.
bumped the ram from stock 311mb to 331mb, though honestly I don't see a difference even using 340-350mb versions.
Done with this, if you want updates, use a kernel by cmenard, morfic, ttabbal, etc., I'm tired of the unrelenting mudslinging that goes on here.
UPDATE 3/7/2011
Source code link added, and I'm officially abandoning this kernel and WILL NOT be updating it again, so thanks for making android not fun again.
UPDATE 2/27/2011
Removed the "FROST" specific link since FROST now works with all standard 2.2 kernels.
Added a third version of test 2 with the blue "bee" honeycomb bootscreen since it was requested. Same kernel config.
Added a fourth version of test 2 with inverted black and white bootscreen since it was requested. Same kernel config.
UPDATE 2/23/2011
Changed thread title to be a bit more informative about what this kernel is. No changes to the kernel.
UPDATE 2/22/2011
Updated zip to include the liblights file for backlight notifications.
Added a second version of test 2, identical in every way except for color "Google" bootscreen.
One quick word of warning (thanks to morfic for pointing this out): don't set a profile with a MAX frequency lower than 800mhz, since that's the default frequency samsung uses to enter/exit sleep.
See Camalot's thread here for how to enable CIFS support: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890730
Renamed download to use old naming convention, will probably end up changing this again in the future.
I've had reports of audio being fine in this build (and it sounds fine for me) so if anyone is still having audio issues, please post in the thread, else I'm going to update the bug to "fixed" by the end of the day without any changes.
Added a colored version of the boot jpeg for use with connexion2005's /lfs tutorial, might build a kernel with color logo later.
UPDATE 2/21/2011
fixed sleep issue (at least for me: 45mins unplugged, only 4 minutes without sleeping)
added voodoo color (I think, I'm not sure how to even test this)
added CIFS support (someone in TW Irc asked for this, I honestly don't even remember who anymore)
have no idea about the sound bug, I'm not even sure I actually hear it, so somebody please let me know.
removed the hardware liblights file from the zip, will make a second version with the file if enough people ask for it
tons of pulling my hair out and stupid noob questions
ooh nice jocelyn. will try it out.
I am gonna try this just for fun! Thanks for all your work. Jocy, are you on twitter?

Liking this a lot! Great battery life now, recording and video playback works due to no speed mod. Only thing I would change (might conflict with your minimalist path), is the google logo to be in full google colors (please? lol) Great job!! Most likely my now daily driver kernel...

Love the idea of an almost-stock kernel with Voodoo sound. I hope you do go through with the idea to add voltage control for UV only (my phone takes it really well, and it seems to help battery life a lot for me), but I'm going to give this a whirl anyway, since all the current Voodoo Sound kernels give me mediocre battery life.
I was going to try and learn to make the same heh

Hey guys! Hope I don't get flamed for posting in development but it just doesn't seem like this should be in general... Anyways, sztupy over in the i9000 forums developed a universal lagfix kernel that is compatible with Eugene373's JPM Froyo rom. You are able to convert your partitions [including /dbdata and /cache] to EXT4, EXT2, and JFS.
The original forum can be found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814228
I have flashed this and have successfully converted my partitions using the EXT4 Advanced and Overkill options and back to RFS. All buttons work in recovery [yes including the power button] BUT when using your phone HOME and BACK both act as HOME. I just did this today so I cannot comment on battery life. One thing that is pretty cool though is this has back light notification built into it and I can confirm it works. I made a flashable zip for the latest build 0.3 and have flashed it successfully.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything you do to your device. So proceed at your own risk.
ENJOY!
The backlight notification, does it stay on persistently, once you get a message, or does it go on and off? Example, if I get a message while I'm sleeping are my leds going stay lit all night?

eugenes kernel is the only reason why we have all the buttons working. If you flash a different kernel it will mess up back and home and break things. Don't people read anymore??

It's funny over in eugene373's people were talking about this lagfix, and it was suggested to start a new thread to avoid clutter. Good advice. Now the only people posting here want nothing to do with said lagfix.???

I think you got it wrong. We are not saying no to do things or experiment. Is just there are people that don't understand exactly what they are doing, and follow this threads, and do the changes without precautions.
One thing is to experiment, but is important to point out what the consecuences maybe.
Without a back button working, it really makes this phone a pain in the a$$ to navigate!!! especially when in your messaging or facebook app. Not really worth flashing till one of the vibrant devs can fix the back button in one of these lag fix kernals.

The no back button is proving annoying for sure. Just wanted to post an update. I converted to Advanced JFS successfully and got a quad score of 1560. One other thing that does seem to be broke [as expected] is media sound. Ringtones still work. The backlight notification has been working great! However it does not seem to ever turn off [can disable it in recovery]. Battery life seems fairly decent so far. Think I'll give Overkill JFS a go and see how it runs. Would definitely be nice if this could be compiled into Eugene's kernel. Hopefully more will come of this...
I'm going to take a look at their kernel source and the source that eugene has for his ROM and see what I can do between the two, maybe I will be able to get this running on the Vibrant with correct keymapping

How would voodoo be ported to DL30? I am just curious on what differences there are? is it just the libs that would need to be changed or what? I am not trying to request it or anything, I am actually just curious. I know the devs will release it when they feel it is good to go to the masses.

requests, usually, are fine...the issue is when something new comes out...everyone wants the exact theme, enhancements, mods, etc they had on their previous setup...this simply isnt possible overnight or even really soon.
relative to other devices, the fascinate has a smaller amount of people that work on it some capacity...dev wise we have 5-6 people that build roms/kernels and look at what theyve put out already in a few short days.
theme wise we dont have the bgills, jsinlegacys, etc of the android world that truly know frameworks/apks inside out...its mostly a few of us that have a relatively good idea of what we're doing porting themes, and making some of our own (well alternate gb versions or something lol)...if i wanted to for example, i could prolly just do quick and messy ports of the frameworks of every theme ive done before in 2 days or something...but i tend to go beyond that with apps and such like others do here
so on my end at least (and i think i can speak for a few others) stuff will come out when its ready...now i understand that themes vacated by people no longer around like retrokid cause some anxiety as it seems no one is working on them...but if theyre popular enough people pick them up (i took on revolution)...so give it a few weeks guys
Is a voodoo port even possible on the .32 kernel before samsung releases the source? Since we only have a leak I imagine it will be a bit before official release of the .32 source for the fascinate. I'm loving DL30 so far but definitely notice some of the lag now that voodoo is gone. But as nitsuj17 said this should be expected anytime you upgrade to a new release. Gotta give our excellent devs some time to port.

jt is working on voodoo from what i gather...i wouldnt put it past him to get it to work...its apparently one of the few things *possible* is still really hard to do...without source
It's been discussed before. You can use a binary kernel to build a custom version using config.gz, provided it was included with the kernel build. Without that, it would be almost impossible.
Ultimately, having the source directly from Samsung is the best way to get a custom kernel.
I really can't wait for some of the 2.3 kernel stuff to start trickling down, since it has ext4 built-in natively. Then we won't need voodoo, it will just be that way already.

Can someone clarify - is "official" CM implementation of ICS for DInc being worked on? Or has DInc been dropped from the list of official CM targets for ICS due to some reasons (obsolete/lack of driver binaries/etc)?
It's not supported mostly because there's no maintainer to submit patches to the CM team The same for other older phones like Evo. Now there may be other reasons but this is the primary one.
Woah, let's not start rumors. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24081082 read that one, as well as mine on the two pages before that.
In essence, we have one maintainer, CUViper, and he's busy with work. Once it settles down, he'll try and get us up and running. Drk.hd is doing his best to get as much up as possible for CUViper to look at through Gerrit. Meanwhile, I'm just helping out where I can, mainly by troubleshooting and answering questions like these. Not much else I can do with no computer.
Tl;Dr yes it's being worked on. Eta: none. Promises for getting official CM9 on the Inc: see answer for eta.
Editorial side note @invisblek: since you got this at goo.im, why don't you make it Goo Manager compatabile (or ROM Manager compatible)?
Happy to have some sort of Cm9 than none. Weather or not it gets supported.

@invisiblek, you don't have to upload the md5 file at goo, since it automagically creates and displays it. Goo Manager app actually checks and compares them, too.

- Experimental > may not be stable.
- Based on CyanogenMod's kernel base and built with Linaro 4.7.
- Handpicked performance patches and mods kept to a minimum.
- Interactive governor - the way Google wants us to use Android.
- Bull**** free, no flashy words to induce placebo & no time lost in search for the everchanging "perfect threshold/tunables".
This kernel has been discontinued, I'm now using AOSP stock with thalamus kernel + BLN.

Secondary phone!
You've write a mistake. Linaro isn't used by Google, because he is juged "instable", Google use her own clone, named Project Butter for JB .
Bln is great feature for nexus, but do you think about adding bld also? Don't think of this as a req or anything, just asking because I love bld, it makes phone so much more elegant, so to now could we expect bld in the future releases.... Thanks mate...

legacy meaning this device its back last year, and im still using it... -.- Don't get me wrong, okay?
Anyway, flashed it on Unoffi CM10, it worked fine and battery didn't drain much on Interactive...

Very true, I meant GCC 4.6.

First of all: Thanks for the kernel! Trying it with JB AOSP and seems to be stable (not tried that much yet).
One question: does anybody know a tool to activate CM BLN for an AOSP rom? To make this clear: I'm not asking for integrating BLN into this kernel

Great, thanks! Will try.
EDIT: Installation works, but CM BLN do not work. Trying now CM10 unofficial.
BLN works in CM9, I could've added the version compatible with every ROM but meh. Same goes for BLD and touch wake. I'm somewhat lazy, especially because I believe thalamus will reconsider the BLN feature, thus rendering the side development of this kernel useless.
This kernel is aimed to please a niche: CM and thalamus kernel users who miss BLN. For a full featured kernel perhaps I'll come back when JB is out.
Guys does it work with isc or only jb. Thnx in advance
Installed it on Unofficial CM10 and it's great. Performance is nice and smooth Btw, when i installed the kernel, Ondemand was selected as standard governor, is that in purpose? Thought you wanted Interactive to be standard.
BLN isn't working on CM10, but meh you wrote it in the OP so no big surprise.
Thanks

Yeah, it is overridden in either init.rc or init.herring.rc in the stock rom to ondemand, surprisingly enough.
Even Google know interactive is crap and expensive on crespo, which is why they override it.

I must admit, I'm glad you haven't just taken my nice clean source and filled it with crap though. That would have made me unhappy.
BLN I can cope with, but no, I will never add it to my kernel, unless I choose to rewrite it of course.

Aye, init.herring.rc: "write /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor ondemand", line 31.
Even on Jellybean this remains so. I guess they either forgot to change it or there must be a reason to favour ondemand during boot. It just doesn't make sense undergoing through all the trouble to boost and work on interactive, including on Nexus S stock kernel, and then not using it. As for the theoretical higher energy consumption due to the more aggressive ramping, I've been reading reports from Samsung Galaxy Nexus users that are reporting better battery in Jellybean stock kernel with Interactive against custom kernels in ICS. While this may be due to other changes, it certainly doesn't discourage the use of 4.1's Interactive. I also don't believe Google would deliberately and significantly hurt battery performance. I've always defended the position that governor's ramping speed, while an undeniable variable, is also overrated. From my point of view, we can sacrifice 2-4% of higher energy consumption in exchange to a more pleasant and stutter-free experience.
As for the BLN, I do hope you'll include it soon!
This is very old, and as such, is discontinued.
Changelog
Discontinued.

Whoa there are still people here in this forum! Look at the future changelog for r2 I would've preferred adding these to r1 but I don't own a Vivid so other people will have to test those features to make sure that they work.
Re: [KERNEL][LINARO][-O3][Linux 3.0.38] Sultan kernel [r1 2/19/2013]
For jellybean...your gonna want to base the source off this https://github.com/htc-msm8660/android_kernel_htc_msm8660 it contains a lot of fixes that the outdated kangbang source doesn't have...
Btw, great to have another dev around look forward to your work...maybe you can help with the call volume issues since your used to MSM8660 devices...then again our vivid seems to always have unique fixes

Will vouch for android1234567 as i have been using his kernel since the sensation. I guarantee none of you will get rid of the vivid once you feel the full sultan kernel with crossbreeder and frandom support.
will pledge another donation for when it. catches up to tje senny r20.8

I didn't want to use Intervigilium's source because Intervigilium decided to make his source as close to stock as possible. What that means is no voltage control, overclock, GPU overclock, etc., basically nothing unique. Also, since I don't actually own a Vivid, patching that source with all those features would be difficult because I'd have to be testing everything after adding a feature (to make sure that it's working properly and that it boots up).
I also looked at the commit history and there isn't any fix that's crucial or necessary for the Holiday, so there is no downside to using KangBang source. If I find a commit that's interesting in Intervigilium's commit history then I'll just patch the KangBang source with it.

R1 already has frandom support Most of the performance features from my Sensation kernel are in r1, but there are still a few left that I'll have you all test.

so its different to the test3 you sent earlier... thee goo. im server is currently down... either way cant wait.
kernel tuner tells me that mpdecision turns off... knowing the issues with the senny il uninstall it and keep an eye with system panel lite instead
antutu gave me a score of 8192 on your test3 release with 1566mhz cpu

"Server Offline. Please hang tight while we get this resolved."
just got home... oh well happy to wait :victory:
also you probably may want to include the original crossbreeder link to your op as not many kernels support it and not many even knowing about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113150
as i'm selling both my sensations, i never really got to try that swap you added.. will read about it in the other thread.. i'm guessing its different or supplementary to the other mod with swap in cache?

Whaaaat Goo.im is down again
The Aroma installer for r20.8 of my Sensation kernel has an option for softswap, however, because I don't have a physical device to test, an Aroma installer is out of the question with this kernel. With an Aroma installer I have to check if the settings will work, which mods work with the phone, the directories for all the settings, etc. Sorry =\
ALSO, all kernels support CrossBreeder but very few kernels support frandom. Frandom makes CrossBreeder much faster; this is feature #5 of CrossBreeder:
idcrisis said:
5. Frandom support - CrossBreeder now supports linking both your random devices to the extremely fast alternative - Frandom ( http://billauer.co.il/frandom.html ). This module is orders of magnitude (10-50 times) faster than the standard character devices ( Check this out - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37409586&postcount=134 ). The erandom character device also installed by Frandom doesn't use up system entropy at all on top of being fast. You will need to ask your ROM developer to develop the kernel module for you and then place it in /system/lib/modules. CrossBreeder will then try and load it and if successful, make all the necessary adjustments so that both /dev/random and /dev/urandom are pointing to /dev/frandom and /dev/erandom respectively. The speed benefits are to be seen to be believed. But since each ROM requires a unique kernel module, this option is left optional ( but auto detect ).

Awesome! I'm trying this out currently. Seems VERY fast! I'll give it a couple days to see what the battery life is like. I am skeptical that we can get THIS much performance increase without battery life going into the toilet, but I'm hopeful anyway.
One thing I was hoping for would be increased in-call volume, which seems to be the same so far. Volume controls still don't affect the vol level in-call. No confirmation on if the echo is gone for the person you're speaking to. I'll update when I find out.
Either way, it's GREAT to have more options Thanks for your hard work, especially considering you don't even have a Vivid!
EDIT: Update - CRT-Off is missing (or excluded)

None of vivid kernel don't have OTG Host support.
it will be great if you add this to your kernel.
i have try to add this to an htc source kernel, it work but some modules like wifi,.. don't work after that (don't have enough knowledge)
