[Q] Headphone jack blown? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to do a search and even on google I couldn't quite find anyone with the same issue.
I've got a HTC Hero I've had for about 6 months. Rooted and running aosp's aospCMod. Love the phone and love the ROM.
Anyway, my issue is that I was on my way to the gym with my son and couldn't find my headphones. We had to stop at the store anyway so I bought a crappy pair of $3 headphones.
I plugged them in and the music was blaring and sounded like crap. I figured it HAD to be the crappy headphones, right?
Not so quick. I plug my phone into my car stereo on the way home and it sounds like a blown speaker. Checked again at home with a set of speakers I've got in my garage for my phone and it still sounds like crap (hissing, crackling noises, just like a blown speaker).
So, has anyone heard of this happening to them? If you can't tell, I use my phone for a music player a LOT. By the way, the normal phone speakers sound OK. Not as loud as they used to be but that just might be my imagination, not sure yet.
I've rebooted, etc, nothing seems to work. Please let me know if anyone knows anything.
Thanks,
Eric

I had the same issue. Once i noticed the degraded audio quality, it noticably got worse every day. Its a fairly common issue with the hero. I used the RUU and confirmed that it was likely a hardware issue since the stock rom did not fix it. Sprint had the part in stock and replaced it within 15 minutes for free.
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA App

Thanks
I was hoping that wasn't the case, but it is what it is.
I'm just worried that since I got it at Radio Shack (Sprint) that Radio Shack is going to tell me to call Sprint and Sprint is going to tell me to go back to Radio Shack or send it directly to HTC, etc.
I just know from talking to the kid(s) at Radio Shack they they have NO technical abilities whatsoever.
Anyway, thanks for the quick response. Guess it's time to RUU.

I'd just call sprint. The last time I had an issue with a phone (my wifes intercept) they setup an appointment at an authorized repair center for us. The people we went to were pretty knowledgeable and got the phone fixed. Oh and I actually bought her intercept from a Radio Shack.

Infiniti/Nissan bluetooth problems with Tilt/8925/Kaiser

Apparently there is a known issue with the Microsoft bluetooth stack which makes it virtually useless to use this phone with Infiniti/Nissan vehicles.
I own a G37, and when I connect the Tilt, everything connects but the quality is sooooo poor that it sounds as if I have the phone in the house and the car is 100 ft away (crackling sound, and no one on the other end can hear me).
I have tried several of the roms here, including the official ones, and no luck thus far. I have tried playing around with the bitpool settings and once again no luck.
Anyone have any suggestions? Is there any way of replacing the Microsoft stack implementation from the Kaiser with the one from the Hermes? That one works perfectly with my car...
Have you tried Austinsync's clean rom? Its working fine with my M45 and I had the same problem you did with some other ROMs. Not sure if ROM change fixed it or one of the other hundred changes I make to my phone every other day. I assume you have adjusted the volume while in-call?

Your phone is made by a Taiwanese manufacturer. I tried searching for a American-made cellphone so that you could immediately begin your purchasing prospects, but was stunned to find that there is not one American cellphone manufacturer.
Your profile picture looks somewhat like a Dodge Ram to me. You might be interested to know that Chrysler recently built a new $315M Dodge plant in Brazil. They also worked collaboratively with Mitsubishi and Hyundai to design 3 engines that will be manufactured mostly in South Korea and Japan.
But let me get back to the topic at hand. I own a 2007 G35S Sedan and I have had very minimal trouble with my Tilt and the handsfree system. Everything works fine, including the reception meter (never worked on my 8525, even with WM6 ROMs). The only problem that I have noticed is that if I answer an incoming call using the button on the steering wheel, the car appears to start the call, though the audio is routed through the phone for the first 10 seconds and then the car resumes control. It is worth noting that I couldn't get my 8525 (WM6) to work with the car at all - even with the latest and greatest.
I will borrow my dad's Kaiser (as mine was returned earlier today), and try the Austinsnyc's superstorage rom. Hope it works, although I think it's based on the base HTC rom. As I'm sure they're using the same Bluetooth stack, problem should be the same.
Either way, I'll try and report if it works.
As far as the buying American... I thought that whole marketing scheme went out the window a few years ago when Chrysler merged with Mercedes Benz, and most of our products are made in China (as our workers are not willing to work so cheap without going on strike)... don't you just love the beauty of the world economy?

It was supposed to be a joke as it has nothing to do with the car. But since you wanted to act all high and mighty......
My Dodge ram was designed approximately 15 miles from my house. It was built 5.5 miles from my house. The company that built it employs approx 200,000+ direct employees and roughly 400,000 indirect, here in the U.S., where i live. At an average salary of $75,000 that's roughly 45,000,000,000 that the company that I buy my car from pumps back into the American economy. This does not include car dealers.
The 2007 G35S is designed in Japan. The 2007 G35S is built in Japan. The 2007 G35S employs maybe 1000 people here in the U.S. because someone has to import it and drive the boat, drive trucks, and do paper work. At an average salary(i'm sure it's way off but lets pretend) of $75,000 that's 75,000,000 that gets pumped back into the American economy. This does not include car dealers.
45,000,000,000 vs 75,000,000
yeah, you are right, it's all even. buy imported cars. it makes sense.
Thats EXACTLY the same problem with my 2007 G35 sedan and my HTC TYTN 2.
When i press the receive button, it takes 10-15 seconds to transfer over to the car audio (goes to the handset first).
THe only solution i have is to receive the call using the phone's talk button, which will go immediately to the car.
I am currently running Dutty's Touchflow Final 2 rom.
BTW. Before my G35, i had a 2006 Chrysler 300C Hemi rollin on 22's with full multimedia setup. My first domestic. I only owned imports before. After i came back to get my infinity G35 (after my major accident), i remember now why imports are so much better than domestci. The Infiniti is built like a ROCK, and the 300 was very crude in build quality.
Anyhow.

No problems in my M45...
Maybe it's the car and not the phone?
I had a G35 prior to the Bluetooth option so I cant speak about the quality there but the M45 has been pretty good. the Tilt has a low out put at times but 95% of the time it connects perfectly with zero issues. beats using a headset imo
could be the car, but more than likely it's not... here's why:
I have successfully paired and used 2 tytn, 2 8125 (Wizard), and 1 ol' school SMT5600. All worked fine without any crackling, or the other person on the other end not hearing me...
On the other hand, I have tried 2 Kaisers and both exhibit the exact same things...
(btw, in the info screen about the bluetooth connection the connection shows up as "poor" for the kaisers, excellent for the rest...)
It's hard to believe that I'm the only a-hole that has the Kaiser/Tilt and G37 combo out there... anyone else having the same problem or am I alone on this one?
Did you not read my post? I have a Tytn 2 and a 2007 G35 sedan with the exact same problems as you.. Just use the Talk button on your phone to receive calls..
Arent you on G35drivers.com?

Tilt + my Mercedes work great.
Same problem w/ Tilt & G35x
Not that I'm glad anyone is having this problem but glad to see it isn't just me. I started with an unlocked imported TyTN (Hermes) phone that worked perfectly in my '07 G35x purchased in May. I never had one problem pairing in the car, receiving or making calls, using voice commands via the car or audio quality.
As soon as I purchased my Tilt I immediately had problems in the G35x but not with any other bluetooth device (I also have a Garmin c550 and pair and make / receive calls with it without any problems).
I can pair the Tilt with the car - no problem. I can use voice commands to make a call - no problem. As soon as the phone starts to ring through the car speakers I can tell there will be a problem because the ring is very 'tinny'. I can hear the person answer and speak but they cannot hear me at all. I then put Dutty's ROM on the phone thinking maybe it was a stack issue that might have been resolved in a new ROM (assuming their had been updates to the BT stack). That did not make any difference.
I will by tomorrow test my corporate Blackberry in the car again. I had used it in the car via bluetooth while I had the Hermes - no problem. I will retest now that the Tilt isn't working.
Have any of you contacted Infiniti and / or AT&T? I could only assume until they have a quantity of calls will they say anything other than "not our problem" or, "never heard of that before".
If there are others with this problem it would be good for them to acknowledge their experience here along with any comparative good/bad feedback with other phones in the same and different car / devices.
Update: I've just tested my Blackberry 8700 that worked prior to pairing the Tilt with the G35. I can confirm that the Blackberry still works flawlessly. As the Tilt also works flawlessly with my Garmin device I think the cause is unclear but would appear to be with the Tilt as it is the only thing that has changed in the tests I've identified above.

David

well, one of the ways I use the phone also is calling out... when I dial the number and call from the phone, the car bluetooth connects and the crackling starts... (i call my voicemail to test).
besides being an Infiniti/Nissan issue, it appears it is far more widespread... there's already a 20 page thread on BT and Kaiser! from that thread it appears HTC is aware of the issue and is working on an upgraded stack/rom... everyone cross your fingers and hope that one works!
Could you provide the link to that thread?
Thanks,
David

Multiple solutions...
I'm using Dutty's TouchFlo Final Rom and I'm not having any problems with my 2006 M. So maybe you can try that ROM.
But on the M, I did have horrible problems with my E-Ten M500+ (continous feedback...C R A Z Y), and limited functionalities with my 3125. Both of those problems were solved instantly with this software: http://www.jetwaremobile.com/ They offer 30 day trial of their software, so try it.

I do not have this issue with my g35... I do not get any crackling.. Its only when i try to receive calls, it delays like 10-15 seconds!!!
Making calls is NON-issue...
it really is crazy... I've tried that particular rom and it has the exact same problem. I have also tried the Jetware bluetooth stack, and once again, it does the same thing. I've tried about 5-6 different roms, from super clean roms, bigstorage, to the latest build numbers that I could find, and all do the exact same thing. I've played around with the bitpool settings, audiogateway settings, and nothing...
It may be that the combination of the G37 + Tilt just has something in there that makes it go crazy. Could be the car, but as I've said earlier, all other phones work, including the Hermes, without any problems whatsoever.
Anyone out there with a G37 willing to give the Tilt a try? I'm about to go to the dealer and pair it with other cars to see if it works!
If you have the G37 (coupe I guess?) then you have the 2008, right? I know they switched to the new hard drive based system. So maybe they don't have all the bugs worked out. Top it all off, MS's bluetooth stack is kinda shaky, so it might be amplifying the problem.
I don't see any service bulletins relating to this issue on your car either: http://x.infinitihelp.com/forum/local_links.php?catid=86 I doubt that Voice Recog system update will fix your bluetooth issues...but then it might. Worth a try.

blueant x5i stereo headset mp3 playback problems

hello again everyone!!!
i just got a set of blueant x5i stereo bluetooth headphones yesterday... they look cool and feel cool... call quality is great...
but the mp3 sound through my tmobile wing is HORRIBLE!!! i tried the headphones on my co-worker's t-mobile dash and they sound awesome... i can't figure out why they sound so muddy and crackly on my phone... is there a setting somewhere that i am missing??? perhaps a firmware upgrade for my phone that would solve this issue???
any help or insight would be greatly appreciated...
thanks in advance,
bennie
How does playback sound through the included (if any headset) or through the loud speaker? If it sounds good (normal) through those then its most likely a blue tooth problem. When you sync it up are you around anything that could possibly interfere with it during the sync process? There have been a few times when I am making a call (rare) but it wont get a good connection and everything will sound like I am under water or worse. (more with my old phone having a crappy radio)
If you have sync'd the two a fair ammount of times and its always the same sounding quality might look on the T-Moble Wings forum (this is the HTC s730) and see if other users have had the same problem. I wouldnt see it having a bad HTC driver, but it might not be very compatable with that headset?
its hard to judge sound the the loud speaker... it sounds bad no matter what...
when hard wired through the headphones that came with the unit, the mp3 playback is fine... its not crackly like this headset is... i tried resyncing a few times as far away from everything as i could so there would be no interference... i never sync my music files though bluetooth so i know that the files aren't getting corrupted... they are going through usb...
i think it has something to do with the phone...
Double check the compatability on the headset, if it plays fine through the USB headphones, and the headset sounds perfectly fine on another phone...
What version is the heatset? blue tooth 2 or whatever the newer version is? I know the phone supports it but something else might have changed? Just something to look into.
Aside from a firmware flash or some software bug I cant think of anything else If the compatability show's up that it should work might try calling HTC's support line?
i contacted blueant before purchase and they assured me the headset is compatible... also tmobile claims that its compatible as well... they even have tmobile packaed oem boxes for this particular headset... the hardware protocols also line up... technically, everything should work!!!
i already contacted htc with regards to this issue... this was their reply:
Thank you for your inquiry in regards to Bluetooth headset stereo issue.
Ben, I know how important it is for you to have the bluetooth headset working properly, Unfortunately there is no updates or patch available for the T-mobile wing to fix the issue, although T-mobile might have a ROM upgrade. The reason why the T-mobile dash had no issues with the headset is because it has different drivers for bluetooth support. Look into possibly upgrading the device rom to try and resolve the issue, otherwise you'll need to purchase another headset which is compatible with the device.
i looked into updating the rom and it appears that i have the newest version: 4.10.531.3 WWE from march 15th 07... i wasnt' able to find anything newer... does someone else know of a newer version for the hera110???
Hmm, might be something in T-Mobiles software that is nerfing your set... Not sure of what though...

G1 Microphhone Replacable?

I was wondering if anyone familiar with the Dream hardware knew if it was possible to replace the mic, and where I might buy one. For no reason that I can determine, my outgoing volume is suddenly 10% of what it used to be. I've tried multiple ROM's but the issue persists. Currently running Amon_RA 1.5.2, Danger SPL, Cyanogen 4.2.12.2 if anybody has a software solution I haven't thought of feel free to chime in as well.
Thanks
did you try using the head phones that came with the g1?
?? I can hear people fine, they can't hear me.
the headphones that came with the g1 have a microphone, and headphones that you can plug into the microphone
Good to know, unfortunately I don't have those headphones. Bought the phone off Craigslist. Worked fine for about 6 months before this happened to me. Maybe I'll see if I can find the headphones on the web somewhere.

Does bluetooth normally suck this much on the Hero?

So I bought a set of bluetooth headphones on Amazon.com recently, and they are working really badly! The audio constantly stutters on CM 6.0, and still stutters quite a bit on Darchrom 2.8. It also has pretty pathetic range, if I put my phone in my pocket or even hold it in my hand below my belt it just cuts out completely!
Is this normal for the Hero or do these headphones just really suck?

I'd say it was your head set. I use my phone to play bluetooth over my car stereo and it's great. I've had it connect to my phone which was inside my apartment and play without issue.
Thanks for the reply! Which ROM do you use, stock or a custom one? I tried it with the Cyanogen Mod RC1 and also Darchrom 1.8, but I haven't tried the stock sprint rom yet.
I'm running the CM 6.0 RC1 basically. I've had some Sense ROMs on it as well and they've worked well enough. Didn't really run stock build long so can't really say much for how well that works.
I also have bluetooth problems, and it is not my headset. The headset pairs, and has great range with my motorola Q. When I pair it with my Hero, it has a 2 foot line of site range, if I hold it in my other hand, it cuts out.
I have a hero running stock 2.1, rooted. My carrier is MTS in Manitoba.
I don't know of any ROMs that would work with my carrier, so I am hesitant to try any other.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Try disabling stagefright in the build.prop file. It fixes audio issues with Pandora on CM6.
I have a cheap insignia headset, and it works for my needs...but, I do have the same problem with the phone in my pocket. I sometimes get the stuttering thing, but I think that it happens for me during syncs and other data stuff happening. Usually tho, I don't have this problem. I'm on froyo 817 build

I just tried this, and it made no difference. Thanks for the tip though. I hope to get my hands on another hero, just so I can check if my hardware is defective.
I have the Motorokr S9-HD headset. I get crappy signal or connection on my Hero running cm6 RC1. I've also noticed this on other roms. You pretty much need a arm band to get better signal. I've found that by placing the phone in your pocket it cuts in and out. I think it sucks but the only cure I've noticed so far is an arm band. Hope this helps, peace, Chags
It's so bad, I can't even have the phone on the straps of my backpack 2 feet away. The signal cuts off if you move the wrong way.
bluetooth issues
Hey guys,
I had a motorokr as well, and it blew chunks for range. I also have a Motorola HT-820 bluetooth headset, and it does great with the hero on the same ROMs. This isn't an issue with the Hero software -- I talked to Motorola about it, and they said the headset was defective. I sent it in for replacement and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

bluetooth hands free mic pioneer stereo issues, people don't hear me.

I had a pioneer deh-x6700bt stereo installed recently that has Bluetooth and hands free wired mic that clips behind the rear view mirror. My son in law did the install for me and he works and mods all kinds of cars so I don't think it was the install itself.
Everything works except when I make a call people don't hear me speak and have to grab my phone and turn on the speaker on the phone to use. It pairs with Bluetooth fine using my music via my phone's sd card and pandora etc.
I sent pioneer and email and they sent me a new mic to install, but had the same issue. The phone I'm using is an AT&T S5 on rooted 4.4.4
Wondering if anyone else has had issues with pioneer systems and found a fix.
Ha, Ha 45 views and nuttin? I figured someone would have something to say on the subject.
Tomorrow I will have some time to play around with it and use my wife's unrooted S5. Also borrow other phones to see if they work.
I have a feeling it's a setting within the radio itself (I hope). I'm not ripping it out if I can't get it to work. It is what it is.
The only thing i can think of is you do not have the phone paired proper you should see 2 profiles in your Bluetooth one with a headphone next to it and ine with a telephone reciver next to it for the same unit

Thanks for the reply rurigokou. I actually do have the two profiles synced.
I tried everything and have come to the conclusion it is a problem with the head unit itself. I called best buy and the manager was very gracious and is going to have a tech do some diagnostics on the unit for me.
If they find a problem I'm guessing they will switch out the unit, since that is where I purchased it. I have studded tires on the front of the car and have to grab others for me to take it in (here in Oregon the tires need to be changed early this year cause of the good weather , March 30).
Thanks for the reply rurigokou.
I have exact same issue
Gonna try new mic
