Hey Y'all,
Anyone know what would cause my internal memory to get about 1mb fuller in what seems like each day. I turn my phone off completely at nite, I am non rooted with OS 2.1
I have even removed some apps to see if this stops. It hasn't Seems like something is writting to my memory with each new startup.
Is there an app, other than Astro or File Manager that will allow me to trim some fat off the internal memory. Also, where (what file) would that be stored in.
Sorry if I haven't explain'd this well but its got me baffled too.
When I updated the OS to 2.1, I was only using about 60mb of internal memory, then I restored all my apps and it came up to about 75mb used, now doing normal daily backups and just normal loads, I have used up 91mb. My backups are saved on the SD, not the internal.
If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatful. At this rate, I will run out of internal memory in about 2 months, lol
any reason why u dont wanna root??? it makes life with android so much easier..
anyway, ur probably buildin up a lot of cache.. if you was rooted you could just use cachemate found in the market and one click would get rid of your cache.. but sense your not, your gonna have to delete cache manually one app at a time..
menu>settings>applications>manage applications
let that load (it will take a min or two depending on how many apps u've got)
after it loads, click menu then sort by size..
start with the first app on the list and click on it.. once that opens you will see "Cache" and the amount (if theres any).. click on Clear Cache.. do that for each app (you will see that a lot of apps are at 0 already so just go onto the next one)
hope that helps..
Not really other than fear of screwing my phone up and not being able to put it back to 2.1 stock. I have been looking over the 2.1 root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
however and I never say never.
Thanks alot for the info about the cache(s). I will give it a try.
I really do appreicate your help.
UPDATE: I just did as you recommended, PERFECT!!
Went from 86mb used to 70mb used. 16mbs more free, I'll take it. Thanks again....

I know u r right, still thinking it over. My problem is really all the people who are rooted and all the problems they are having. This forum has 1000's of the" Help, I rooted and now this or that doesn't work" OR "Help, I just rooted and now my phone is Locked and I can't access anything" that scares me. My phone works perfectly, it tethers perfectly and its the old adage, If its not broken, lalalala....
Anyway, I haven't said NO.
BTW, Ic you're in Spartanburg, lol, used to date a gal in Easley and I am a grad of USC, GO *****!!

Well, just cause you root dosent mean you need a custom ROM. You can stay stock rooted and just get the rooted abilities. IE Wifi tethering, Cashe cleaning, a bunch of other stuff.
Most people had the fear of messing up there phone, however as in the previous post you can root and stay with the stock ROM. I have rooted several android phones, not just hero's, and have not once had a problem. I know that some have problems if they are not on Sprint and try flashing a ROM which might changed their profile info. And the great thing is that there have not been any issues with the 2.1 RUU. So if you rooted and had problems, which I doubt, you can always RUU back to 2.1
They're not having issues due to root...it's the custom roms they are loading. I've had mine rooted since last November, and I haven't had a problem with the phone because of root. Now, I have had problems with custom roms before...but the nice thing about root is that you can always reflash to a new custom rom...or you can go back to stock (or stick with stock if that's your preference).
All root does is gives you more control of your phone. What you do with that control is up to you.

Basically, this.
Well thx folks, so if I do this root proceedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
, I will have SuperUser perms and tipically NO problems as long as I stick with the stock ROM? Another question, Tethering is very important to me. I currently use PdaNet, will it still work after ROOT plus give me WiFi Tethering too?
Thanks again, this just got more interesting.
Pretty much wifi teather does have its limits but its still pretty wicked
Thx again folks, Ima gonna do it. Seems fool proof and the positives outweigh the negatives. I can also revert to pure stock if all else fails, so, WHY NOT?
Regards,
Soon to be ROOTED!!

Yes I did, I decompressed the 3 files within hero-root.zip to the C:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder.
The funny thing however is in the
C:\android-sdk-windows
folder, there is nothing, no files, only the TOOLS subfolder and in the TOOLS folder are the three following files:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinsbApi.dll
It this correct?
Just barely, my market stopped showing... apps, I see like really crap things, but yeah basically nothing. I am running Phoenix 4.1, and haven't had any problems until today, i haven't changed anything... so you know i need a fix,

Already did that. Does not work. Even in stock, you will see you are in a test sandbox for the market. I have been here three times already. The only fix is to report it in the link and wait. Google is really starting to piss me off with this issue.
Yeah and now it sucks because i can't get ROM manager to get clockwork to flash a ROM. Plus i can't download the apk cause my phone can't download unknown sources
yeah tried everything in that thread, and nothing. wasted like 3-4 hours
I just restored my backup, and everything is working as it was.

You don't need rom manager to flash clockwork. Second or third post if phoenix has an update.zip. That will get you clockwork recovery

yeah i got that all figured out, its just now my IMEI number won't freaking change...its at 004999010640000, i have the one that is the right one backed up but, it wont take. if used root explorer, tried the thread on the phoenix rom to back up and restore nv_data.bin and imei, but no luck. I "believe" if i get the IMEI changed the Market will start working. Now if i could have any suggestion that would be fantastic. I've spent all night with no luck. I think the IMEI is half stored on the NV_data.bin, which i don't know how to edit.
Thanks in advanced
Happend to me about a week ago and its happing again but it does fix itself just give it time thats all i did... did all that flashing crap back and forth last time didn't work just had to wait it out about 24-36 hours... sorry....

I went through this same hell today. Spent about two hours trying to find a fix, and then realized I had some backups in the efs folder that went by the name of ".nv_data.bak".
I backed up the efs folder using ADB, then deleted all the nv* stuff in there except for that one backup, and renamed it to nv_data.bin. I restarted my phone and my IMEI was back to normal (and after a cache deletion from Download Manager, Google Services Provider, and Market, Market worked fine again).
I don't even know why my IMEI was screwed up in the first place.
If you email me your nv_data.bin I can at the very least look at it and see if I can find any glaring problems with it. Send me a PM and I'll send you my email if you'd like.
Yeah i need serious help with this... I tried almost everything. I did this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8983897&postcount=103 and it shows its pushing the right IMEI number that starts with a 3. but instead i rebot and its the same 0444 number
also to ensure i did it somewhat right, i pulled the .imei and opened it up in wordpad and it is the right number, so it means something is wrong with my nv_data.bin

Let me say I had an EVO and used Unrevoked to root it and all I did was use that for wifi.
So now I have an unrooted Nexus. I am in a position that I want some of the custom things but have not rooted and a lot of this technical stuff floors me at this point and I do not want to brick my phone.
Can anyone tell me what it means to install via recovery, how to do a backup and what deoxxed (I know it is spelled wrong) is?
I want to put a custom home screen, I like the blue market I see and I like the clear MMS that is posted, but the install instructions just confuses me.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I really am wanting to customize my Nexus 4G.

Check out the One Click Root thread in the Nexus S 4G Development section. See if that helps a little more. Your probably going to get flamed for posting this in this section, but oh well. Read that and try to get rooted first. Then if you need more help after that feel free to shoot me a PM and ill try to help you more. Read different threads as well, just search XDA for root NS4G. I went through the exact same thing. If you start reading more threads it will start coming to you. When you root, you need the drivers (adb and fastboot) installed on your computer, they come with either pdanet or sdk which you can find the download links to with a quick search of the forums. Find the stickied section of NS4G dev section and those should have all the files you need. Cwm is Clockwork Mod Recovery. It is flashed after unlocking the bootloader using a command prompt. After rooting and flashing cwm, you boot into recovery(cwm) and follow the instructions from a root guide to flash your new rom. I think BuglessPete has a great tutorial on root and flashing a rom. Find that and you're good to go. Don't get discouraged. It is NOT as hard or complicated as it seems. You will be surprised at how simple these guys have made it for us newcomers. Make sure you give them a thanks.

So it was a day from you know what. I got rooted first this morning, I did the first update that I wanted which was the blue market, epic fail. I spent the whole day trying to get my market to work again, no go. I had not backed up (stupid me) and when put that new market in it was a FC galore. I tried downloading other market apk's including the market that is due to be released and none would install. I ended up flashing the phone with Oxygen ROM. Now I have to get the phone back to the way I like it, lots of apps to download (not sure why they did not restore since I am set to back up/restore from google servers) and go from there.
I will be doing more I am sure, lots of reading to do. Thanks to the two of you.
hey guys this is my first post. I have known about this website for a long time. i am a huge fan. I am having some trouble with my droid 3. I have used the v7 one click root and it worked like an absolute charm. i loved it. i highly recommend it for new d3 users. Only problem is my DA sister was messing with my phone right when the new update went out for them. lets just say.. she updated it. i had absolutely no idea until i tried to access root permissions and it did not work. i had titanium backup running too so my apps are frozen but my phone is not rooted anymore? i cant access anything. i tried to re-root my phone but it says adb is not recognized as an internal or external command or something like that. I dont know if i have to reset my entire phone? or what. Ive tried everything and nothing is working. If this is not the proper forum to ask this question i apologize ahead for this is my first forum like i said. I have absolutely no idea what to do. i am very stuck. Anything can help guys thank you.
if you had so any apps frozen I'm surprised the update went through. Lol the one click root should work for you though. I guess if you've tried everything an sbf with the .890 file is guaranteed to solve your problems and you will be able to reroot just as you've done before. Just check if your drivers are still a-ok

New Revo won't work with A I O, can't stand the bloat someone tell me please. Is anyone working on a root for this POS update.
oh im sure
im sure MT is on the job, but im sure a lil donatin to him would motivate him a lil.... but yeah anyway the thread "keep root through zv8" or whatever is still the only way that the general public knows about... but im sure u already knew that.
I figured as much about MT, (your the man) but i ask because my old revo worked fine with his AIO and maintain root method, but the new one i got that came pre-loaded with Zv8 wont, even after flashing several times back to zv7 and so on.
If you're readin this MT i am to poor to donate money but im willing to be a guinea pig. lol

There is something you aren't doing right even if on ZV8.. You can downgrade to ZV7, then Root only with the original AIO, then create the local.prop file then download the update, then use the 2nd AIO to maintain root, install CWM, then Broken Out.
I'm inclined to believe you because aio worked the first time but then zv8 would fail to regain root and install cwm it would say failed to find path, then flashing back with .tot to zv7 and even doin a factory reset back to stock and trying again now aio won't even root zv7 it just says failed to find path and runs through real quick, if you have any suggestions I would appreciate them.
And by the first time I mean I flashed back to zv7 rooted, flashed maintain root then ota updated then zv8 aio would fail
I have tried many processes over and over again and can recall once the first all in one wouldn't root my phone. I just did a factory reset then after reboot ran the lg-setup then flashed the v7.tot again then was able to root only after that reboot.
If that doesn't work, I don't know what will but good luck
Yah tried that, no luck, well see what mt comes up with. This is a new recertified phone and it has some wierd usb issues, everytime I reflash I have to reboot to be able to use change usb connection, plus now when flash tots I dont lose phone settings like I used to,

Money is something I have, root, I do not. It sounds like MT is the man when it comes to rooting. I would be glad to make a sizeable donation thru pay pal if I knew it would go directly to helping me game root access for my lg revolution running zv8.
See I would do the downgrading option everyone is talking about but those methods are only for pc ( I mean those download files ). I run a mac.
But seriously, I would love to have root. I used to use an iphone and was always jailbreaking. I love having that type of access so any help would be awesome!!

That means nothing. I flash TOT's all the time and never loose settings or apps.
As for MT developing a root process for this phone, while I appreciate all the work he has put into this phone and his skill set, what he does and what root exploiters do are two entirely different things. MT is just gracious enough to create easy to use AIO scripts for everyone to use. I do not see a new root process coming unless another exploit is found and works on this phone.
If I am incorrect about this then MT can feel free to correct me.

+1 For root all I have found is the exploit for keeping root through the update. As for writing a fresh exploit, there are a couple of guys that specialize in it. Jcase and djrbliss are 2 of the best around. The only problem I see is that zv8 has 0 access to the data partition without root, and so what other partitions are blocked. That is why the spectrum version does not work right off of the bat.

nevermind, just had to push cwm through adb still don't know why aio zv8 failed oh well im good now, and mt thanks for debloating and debingin. lovin broken out
Well I THINK I have found WHY I cant OTA ZV8
OK. I have found somthing interesting. I have 2 Revos. BOTH are now in test mode for reasons I am to embarrased to go into. (dang Noob screwups)
ANYWAY I was playing around in LGNPST last night and discovered the Warranty Date (assuming Expiration) on one phone was 4/4/12 Ironicly the same day I unbricked it using the Phonebook emergency recovery. (what puts the the phone in test mode. )
BOTH phones are flagged in my Verizon account (VZW online) as NON VZW Phones. (even though they originally were)
I am starting to think that when you do an emergency recovery you flag not only test mode but the warranty date & some Verizon flag as well. So while the phone is functional ALL Verizon support goes Bye Bye (I.E. OTA updates) EVEN if you flash back to Stock. I know that none of my old Not so smart phones will update past the Warranty date, I suspect this might be somthing similar.
Can anyone VERIFY this? I can SEE the potential problem but my skills stop there. (for now.) Can anyone tell me how I might be able to dig deeper?
I'd be happy with a rooted ZV8, let alone broken out, at this time.
I dont think anyone has figured a way around test mode yet except flashing back to zv4.
If it doesn't boot after flashing .tot:
1. Pull Battery and replace
2. push power and down until you get option to wipe
3. press power to confirm and reboot.
you will be stuck in zv4 and any flashing forward after that will put you back in test mode but at least you will be able to use your phone like normal until someone figures this out, but from what I read it appears improbable.
Yeah not looking good. Test mode I can live with it's the other issues thats killing me.

If you downgrade to Zv7 so you can root install cwm and eventually get to rooted Zv8 you will not lose anything on your phone if you do it correctly.
Just Flash the Zv7 Tot and use mt's AIO method, (stopping short of broken out)
if done correctly you will lose nothing.
