Pardon me if I've placed this question in the wrong section. I'm new to the Android scene and very interested in Pimping my Captivate. I rooted my phone with Z4. I've installed ROM Manager Pro. Ive downloaded the SpeedMOD K13(CVM version) to my SD card. Now when I run ROM Manager and select "Install from SD card", I follow the prompts and backup but when it reboots into recovery mode I can't tell if the SpeedMOD actually loaded or not. I don't seem to get any errors according to the yellow syntax on the lower half of my screen but I guess I'm expecting to see a little more activity. When I check my Kernal version in the Setting section, I don't see any change. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks.
Speedmode its a kernel, not a rom. Not sure if you know this. I don't think you can install it over stock, but you know it is installed if when you go into recovery you have ulk options.
If you are froyo stock ignore previous statement.
Recovery, phone off, volume up and down and power, at&t let go
This is what I get in yellow text when I try to install SpeedMod kernal. No visible errors but no definative text telling me it loaded. At the end, it simply tells me to press the power button to reboot.

What are you running
installing kernal only
When installing the speedmod kernal by itself in the past, I've followed the instructions on the developer's website which you can find a link to in the first post of the folllowing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
(sorry I am not allowed to post outside links yet)
There was one time when the latest update wasn't working so I tried the previous release and it worked! Currently I'm running the Supernova 2.3 ROM which installed the most current speedmod kernal at the time of writing this so manual installation wasn't necessary.
Give the previous release a shot if the manual installation doesn't work just to make sure it's not the same problem I had in the past.

You look to be on the stock rogers rom. To be honest I have no idea about running a diff kernel on a stock rom. Not sure that you even can. I know there is a stock kernel with vodoo for that stock rom

Does this mean I wasted my money on ROM Manager Pro? Is this the method I need to use for any future Kernal flashes.
Kernel flashes yes
Don't feel bad I paid for rom manager pro. I don't even have it installed on my phone anymore

Okay. I followed your instructions for lag fix and it's doing it's thing. One more question. You mentioned tweaks. I've heard about them but don't know how or where to access it.

Hey everyone,
I am about to finally root my phone and install a custom ROM. I was looking at the unlockr website and was reviewing everything before i went ahead and mess up things. Since I have a stock 2.2 phone do i need to do that ODIN procedure at all after i root it or can i just download ROM manager and install a custom ROM through that? I was either going to do Perception or Cognition since I am a new user. But for cognition i was going to maybe wait toll 2.3 was stable because people been having problems. Thank you!

as far as cognition goes, the 2.3b4-6 are pretty stable, but dont get that confused with ANDROID 2.3....they are 2.2 roms

Make sure you understand how to recover when you screw the pooch. Cognition is a good place to start, read all you can on voodoo lagfix. Perception can be a bit daunting with all the voltages, kernels and such.
Good luck and welcome to XDA!!

I did a little more reading... Yes i got confused with the firmware version and the build numbers and wanted to make sure if i was doing the correct procedure. I also looked into how to recover everything too so I am good if i mess up. I am going to root using one click root and download the needed apps and backup with titanium, then run ROM manager an "Flash Clockwork Mod."
I am going to go with [ROM]Cognition v2.3b6 and install that on my captivate through ROM manager.
Then I am going to look into the voodoo lagfix kernel after i successfully flashed. I just did not know if this cognition was a good rom to do or that I should wait?

Everything you want to do will not work with your version of 2. 2. You need to flash to stock prior to trying to flash any roms.
Please take the time to read and understand what it is you are doing before you ruin your phone.
- Axura made me type this
Just to re-iterate what has been said...
There is a beta of 2.2, but there is no official stock 2.2. What your phone has was the beta - many of the ROMs out there are based on this, so you may not "fix" anything by flasing to another 2.2.
I am sorry, is there a link where u can put me in the right direction to downgrade? Thank you. I just want to root my phone because having this 2.2 i have now is nothing special.

Root the phone if you are going to be flashing ROMs. It's easy enough to do, and Titanium Backup is a must have ...
Rooted my phone successfully and I am at 2.1 eclair and i have been reading up on other custom roms to install.
I was looking at Axura, perception, and cognition...but i am a big theme guy and i did not know how to go about like changing the theme for the ROM?
Do i actually install the custom rom first and then find a theme for the custom rom?

Well if you are speaking about the themes here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760106&highlight=Minimalistic+mod+theme
They are (as the post says) all flashable through CWM, which is exactly how you flashed the Cog ROM. Do the same process but select the zip file for the theme. Installs right over the top of the ROM.

Its is a safe bet to go to stock. All ROMs here are more or less developed based on factory settings, and this is got by going back to stock ROM. Going to stock resets phone back to factory level, and erases all traces of old ROM. This also avoids any potential issues that could crop up when u flash a different ROM over an existing custom ROM.
I want to know the architecture of the files in the phone so i can better understand what im doing so i dont mess up. If someone can give me a step my step of clockwork mod i would greatly appreciate it...specifically:
(1) is there a way i can change / upgrade the clockwork recovery version of my phone... if so how? (check note on bottom)
(2) whats the most recent version if i decide to do so (where can i find it)?
**NOTE**: I've flashed different clockwork mod versions via Rom Manager, but when i hit boot into recovery off my current ROM, it always goes to the same version. (v2.5.1.0 Speedmod ULFK)

not true just like the OP said you can flash different versions through rom manager for kernels that dont have it built in. (stock kernels)
To OP if its built into the kernel you cant change it, see above.
i forget where but there is a website from the creators and they have every version available for every phone in a long list.

Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: I9000UGJK4
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #54
Build number: FireFly 2.2
this may seem like a novice question, im still trying to understand everything about my new phone;
when flashing a new ROM, through clockwork, does that include a kernel in the rom package?
in other words, if Rom ABC is running kernel #abc and i flash Rom XYZ, will the kernel change? how do i change the kernel without changing the rom?
All ROMs as far as I know include a compatible kernel and modem. Inside the ROM zip you'll find 4 folders plus the META-INF. The updates folder has the ROM (zImage) and modem.bin, which are flashed to the write-only memory. The other 3 are copied in the same structure as the zip file after fomatting (sdcard is copied without formatting).
This is probably in Q&A, but anyway. To flash only a kernel or modem, get the CWM zip of it, put it in sdcard, reboot into recovery, select zip and go. Make sure kernel and modem are based on the same hardware (i897, i9000, etc.).
And last but not least read, read, and read more. This is just info I've read many times here.
where can i check my modem version? is it the same as "baseband version"

Hey Guys.. I'm looking for a "how to Root " on Bell's Stock UGKG3.
It seems in order to get root you must use CWM 2.5 and higher but KG3 overwrites with 3e Recovery. If I flash CF-roomt 1.3 through 4.1 I get looping boot screens.
Many searches later.. I'm here.
Can anyone help me out?

Odin 1.82: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1IKLKDPB
Just open Odin, put the tar file as PDA, put the phone in download mode, plug it in, wait for the box under ID:COM to go yellow and the 'added!' message and hit start. It will be done in a few seconds. Install superuser and busybox from the market to see if it works.
Like I said earlier it didn't work right away for me, superuser just FC'd on the first boot. Not sure if it was reflashing or rebooting that fixed it. Just a warning that some tinkering might be required.

I re-flashed stock UGKG3 to an i9000M, then grabbed the rooted kernel you linked to root. However, I had to manually download superuser and busybox installer from the Android Market - something I thought would happen automatically.
Hope this helps someone else!
hi brahmy

managed to grab the file. thanks.
just wonder if you were successful after flashing this kernel

Yes you do need to superuser and busybox from the market.
I'm seeing over 900 downloads of that kernel from megaupload, I didn't make it but I'm glad my instructions and download link helped so many.

Am not getting root ... UPDATE: have root, but not busybox
So I re-installed the stock Bell UGKG3 kernel which worked great.
Then I installed this rooted one, more than once between reboots. I also got Busybox and TiShell from Market but I have no root
What might be going wrong?
Before I put the stock kernel back on, I was playing around with various kernels and with one of these kernels, I also updated the CSC and MODEM. Will this cause issues with this rooted KG3? I seem to not have problems with the stock KG3 that I re-installed using Kies.
Please help! No idea why everybody seems to be getting root with this kernel except me.
EDIT:
Ooooops looks like I may have had an out-of-date/dysfunctional Superuser app that was there from an old kernel update. I deleted it, re-installed from Market, and now I have root!!!
Now I have another problem: Looks like my busybox is also out-of-date. D/l'd busybox installer, it asked me if I wanted to install the latest, I said yes, but then it said I still have a version hanging around and I couldn't install.
So I opened my terminal and found one in /system/xbin. Did:
su
rm busybox
... but says the it's a read-only filesystem
How can I remove my old one that apparently exists somewhere and won't let the newly-downloaded busybox installer install a new one??
Stock ugkg3
I had the same problems with rooting my ugkg3, I used Darkyrom 10.2 Re. It rooted, put voodoo lagfix in, busybox, superuser. I didn't have to add any of those apps. I used odin to put it in. The only thing you have to do is reconfig your apn settings. What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?
I installed an old firmware [N7000XXKKA], applied ROOT and CWM to it.
now I upgraded my firmware to a new one [N7000XXLA4], by using the CWM manager, and choose KEEP CF-ROOT.
my question is:
did the firmware get completely upgraded? or did the kernel remained the same and I just did nothing
Your kernel will be same old.
You can update it to new LA4 with this

Ok I was afraid staying with the older kernel meant I was giving up performance enhancements (or other enhancements) in the later kernels.
