Alternative to Chrome to Phone (Google Voice) - Epic 4G Themes

Hello everyone, although this is not an app I figured I would share this with everyone since it works much better than Chrome to Phone but please take note that this will require the google voice extension for Chrome. I just remembered that I have a Google Voice account, not sure how it works about getting one anymore because I got mine by referral a long time ago, but if you can get one this is what I did.
Requirements:
Google Chrome
Google Voice account
Google Voice Chrome extension
A cellphone
First add yourself as a contact in your voice account, make sure that it's your cellphone number and not Google Voice's number.
Second install the Google Voice extension for Chrome
Third open the Google Voice extension and "text" your cellphone a link, or whatever, and then save the contact from the text into your phone. Your pretty much finished.
Why I like this method?
Not only can I send stuff from the browser to my phone, but from my phone to the browser, instantly.
Its as fast as an sms, not ten minutes or more like Chrome to Phone.
Much more reliable.
One less app on my Epic4g.
Also this is my first official post of anything significant so I am sorry if this doesn't go here but I am pretty sure no one else has posted this

List of non-texting Google apps?

Hey all, first time poster here. Just bought a Fuze the other day, loving it thus far - but AT&T is gay in regards to their texting, $20/mo for unlimited texting on top of $30/mo for unlimited bandwidth. I have the unlimited bandwidth, but only $5/mo texting. (200 text messages)
My question is, like the title suggests, out of all the Google apps listed on their mobile page, which ones use messaging and not bandwidth? Specifically, I want to know about Gmail - but I also want to know if any of their other apps use messaging, too. I was playing with the maps part last night with the traffic option turned on, and it's so pimp I nearly had to change my pants. I need to make sure stuff I want to use doesn't sit and use text messages, though. I found Palgrino in another thread here for non-messaging IM services and that's a pretty tight app, but I want something to check email with. (could also use an app to check non-Gmail email with that only uses bandwidth, but I'm guessing I can find that via search, haven't tried yet)
Thanks in advance
Congratulations on your purchase. Hope you're happy with it. I think only the default AT&T "instant messaging" program uses text messages. Another revenue opportunity, I guess.
Palringo is my preferred instant messaging program. I switched to it precisely because it only uses data.
As for Gmail, it is - in my opinion - easier to access it via IMAP using the Messaging program. It integrates into the operating system much better. If you need instructions, they should be somewhere in these forums or on the Gmail website.
If the person your "texting" with has accesss to gmail too, they can send you either sms' (youd still have to pay) from gmail. OR do what i did till i turned on texting. Set your IMAP gmail to check every 5 mins.

Youtube

I've been having a problem with youtube since about 2 days ago. I used to be able to set the youtube app to use my regular youtube account (since it's different from my google account), but now it automatically logs in to youtube with my gmail account. I don't want that because I have no access to any favorites on my youtube account, or anything else. Also, it seems that search is broken with my google account, because it returns nothing, and it gives me constant "No network connection" notifications. Any ideas? how about linking my youtube account to my gmail account, is it possible? How?
I'm sorry to say I can't help, but rather could you tell me how to sign in with my YT account in the first place rather than google? I've never found an option for it and was never promted.
well, whenever I'd first set up my phone and went into youtube, I bring up "Menu>Account" and then it'd tell me something like "Youtube works better if you link it to a youtube account" and then it asked for my login info, after I logged in, my favorites, etc, all was in there
Hmmm my phone only ever did that on JF1.5, I think. Oh well...

Any apps using C2DM or cloud backup?

These two sure seem like tasty features, only waiting for a developer to incorporate them to their apps. How come no apps use them yet? Am I wrong, and there is an app out there that do?
Found one, it's funny to see it show up in the Android sync menu
http://code.google.com/p/jumpnote/
And http://code.google.com/p/filetophone/
I'm not sure how to feel about C2DM and the way you sign into your google account after being directed from another site.
I know that Google doesn't share your password only your email address with whatever developer is using the google service.
However, this opens up the "precedent" that it's okay to sign into your google account from a link originating from random websites. So incredibly easy to phish accounts in that manner.

JumpNote is pretty neat!

You do have a point, I hadn't looked at it from that point of view.
Android2cloud uses c2dm and is pretty neat. Would link but can't as my account hasn't been verified by mods yet.
File2phone will no doubt be very useful, not a lot of activity going on there tho by the looks of things!
I would have thought more apps would be using c2dm like Facebook for example to notify you have a new message or backing configs for Locale or Tasker to the cloud would be nice .... not much traction is dissapointing.
awaiting a msn app like ebuddy on the iphone, data connection doesnt have to stay open.

[Q] Instant messenging from Contacts ?

Hi,
I recently found that there is an option for adding IM accounts for each contact. While in Edit Contact mode you have the choice to add an IM account (most common ones) for each contact. If you add an IM account you will then have a choice within a contact to start IM chat with that specific person.
My problem is that if I add an Microsoft Live account for one of my friends nothing happens when I try to send a message. E.g There is no application linked to this action.
It works well if I instead use Google Talk, but then that application is installed on the phone.
Since there is no official MSN application available I wonder if there is a way to get this working ? Is there an Motorola app which is not present on my phone? (running custom firmware) or is there a way to link a specific app to that action ? (Ebuddy for example) or how is this intended to be used ?
Been searching the net for an answer without any luck.

nope, instant messaging from contacts is only avail. for Gtalk.
some extra functionallity comes with the official skype app, (like in facebook or twitter)
but you can mess aound with jabber transports if ur rly interessted, that works quite well for me, but can get complicated too.
there are guides for that out there - if u google "jabber transport gtalk"

Thanks for the reply. I also found out that this has nothing to do with Motorola, since it looks and behaves the same on my Samsung Galaxy. Looks like Google prepared for IM via Contacts but since there are no offical clients (or non official) that integrates with the contacts it doesn't work. Would be good to be able to configure this yourself. Anyway I will stick with Ebuddy which lets me connect to different networks within the same applikation.

[Q] My Search History Syncing To Someone Else's Phone!

I used Google Now to search for a online ska/punk radio station on my way home on my HTC One. I get home to help my Dad learn how to use his One and MY search for the radio station is showing on HIS Google Now app!
I checked his and My Accounts and Sync list under settings and neither phone has the other person's accounts.
I did sign into Gmail last night on his phone through the browser, not the app, but I signed out before I performed the search in question.
Before you ask, no, he's not spying on me, he doesn't know how to use a smartphone, and I'm the primary account holder for the phone service.
Please help!
If you sign into a Google account on Chrome EVERYTHING gets synced. Bookmarks, history and w/e else. At least, that's what I think.
Google can tell when a search is coming from the same house and sometimes you search history is filed in due to your geographical proximity.
but it's ok to eat fish cause they don't have feelings.....
Sorry to waste everyone's time, it was a simple mistake on my part. I had forgotten that two days prior I had signed into HIS email via gmail.com on MY phone (to track his phone shipment ironically) and never signed out.
