Not sure why long press never did text selection in gmail before. It's not like long press did anything previously!
Does anyone know if there's a 'dark' version of 2.3.4? I'm so used to having it on 2.3.2. and I don't wanna go back.

2.3.4.1 and the one previous (that was pulled).
And no.. it works when you're reading the email, not during a reply/compose.
You long press then let go, you will see a cursor, then you can tap and drag anywhere to highlight anything.

No need to be sarcastic. Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for all of us. I have tried with various emails and holding my finger on text for various amounts of time. No success.

Hey guys,
I was reading gizmodo's blog and it had an article about the chrome to phone. In the article it said that was possible send links, maps/directions, phone numbers, texts... well I'm using chrome to phone on my N1 for a while already and so far all I could send over was links and maps/directions. I Googled about it and I didn't found any instructions how to send phone numbers or texts.
Has any figure it how to do it? Or is not implemented yet?
Thx.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Just maps and websites as far as I know.
It works with phone numbers.
and text you highlight
goes to phone's clipboard!
I'm not sure if you mean sending texts and phone numbers from your browser to your phone or to another phone, but you need google voice with a google number to send texts to other cell phones from your computer. This may not even be what you are asking.
Appbrain can send apps to your phone using ' fast web installer'
....same service-cloud-phone api
Ahhhh now I got it.
as superhongry said it works with text/numbers u highlight. So if u wanna send a text, all u have to do is highlight the text and send to phone. It ill be on the clipboard so all u have to do is paste into the notepad or w/e u wanna keep.
Same goes for number. If u wanna send a phone number u saw in a webpage all you have to do is highlight the number, send it to phone and past it into the phone app dialer.
ty for the help ppl
it still just send the whole page when i have something highlighted... am i missing something?
Yeah, I haven't been able to figure out the sending text to the clipboard feature. I've tried highlighting it, copying it first on my desktop, and random other stuff that doesn't even make sense to try. Only ever sends the webpage link.
Any trick to doing it?
Well, I guess is still a beta service so aint all that smooth... even when you highlight text/number it ALWAYS send the whole page, but the important is that the highlighted text/number get's stored in the system clipboard. So u can simply paste it w/e u like it.
According to the google doc page, when u highlight a cell number it should auto load the dialer, but that's a big negatory.. it simply don't work. But still the referred number get's stored in the clipboard so u can just past in the dialer.
When they launch a 1.0 version I'm hopping it will all work out.

NOPE!
Just select the text. Right click and select.
(Done using Firefox 3.6.3, Send To Phone 0.8 and Nexus One 2.2 FRF85B)
Funny enough in Chrome we don't get that option to right click an highlighted text and "send to android".... kinda sucks that Firefox extention has more functionality than Chrome's extension itself.

i tried sending a phone number to my phone yesterday morning
it was working. the phone automatically launched dialer with the number already inserted.
later in the afternoon, i tried again to show some friends...failed. all it sent was the entire page.
im sure they're still working out lots of bugs.

And thanks to the others with info on the clipboard. I never thought to check it when the page was sent over too, I just assumed it failed and sent the page instead.
yeah i just pasted and it had what i had highlighted last night still copied so that works, and i tried the firefox one, it works alot better

The chrome to phone is pretty much just a proof of concept that was written up for I/O.
In Chrome, you can highlight any text in the browser and click the normal Chrome-to-Phone button by the URL. It will open the URL in the browser on the phone, BUT, the text will ALSO be copied to the phone's clipboard. (In Chrome on the desktop, you should see the color of the highlighted text change slightly to indicate that it sent it).
This is confirmed in Chrome 6.0.453.1 dev with Google Chrome to Phone Extension Version 0.3 on Windows.
Anyone come across any fixes for the fact that (a) there is no LED indicator telling you that you have a message; and (b) there is no pointer/curser/trackball?
I tried NOLED app from the market, but thought it was useless.
NOLED is probably the only "fix" you are going to find for notifications. Android is a touch screen OS, why on earth would you need a pointer?
The trackball on the N1, for instance, is super helpful when typing.

ON topic, mate a lot of keyboard apps for android include a d-pad option which will let you accurately simulate a cursor/trackball.
No LED notifications is a bummer. Strange how people with iphones are not annoyed by that! Something like sms popup can be set to periodically vibrate to remind you etc. No real solution there Im afraid!
There was some dev work on getting the backlight touch buttons to blink but work seems to have hit a dead end.

Heh, its the ideal solution, except theres not really a solution at the moment. Drivers have now been made public (or so Im led to believe). so Im hoping to see it come along side Cyanogen Mod.
Theres an online petiotion that can be signed regarding some dev work for this. At the moment, theres like 350+ signatories....now if everyone chipped in $5 ......
for the D-pad just slide from the "S" sybmbol in the lowwer left of the keyboard to the "sym" key directly next to it (using swype, not the samsung keyboard). a directional pad pops up and it has backspace, backspace by full word, delete, cut, copy, paste, select all, page up, page down, home and end, and a "tab" key, though i don't know if it works like tab of if it is just a large space for starting paragraphs.
samsungs keyboard also has something similar if you hold the key to the numbers/symbols for three seconds.

Wow. Thanks! Dolphin HD, LiveJournal, and text entry don't get along so well for some reason; it never puts the cursor where I tap when I want to go back and edit text. So I'm extremely happy to hear there are arrows on the Swype keyboard! The trackpad and GPS were the only two things I was still missing from my Aria, and you just remedied the former.
Though now I feel silly for not figuring it out myself!
Too be honest I only knew about it from a review I read but they didn't explain how to do it, after a few days of messing with it I found it in the swype tutorials

I know of a few different shortcuts on this phone, my two favorites being MENU + C (copy) and MENU + V (paste), but MENU + A (select all) doesn't work like it should. If I hold them at the same time, it highlights everything, but as soon as I let go of either MENU or A, it deselects the text. Am I simply doing it wrong or what?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
It's a known issue. You just have to try and press C really fast to copy all.
If you hold MENU+A and hit C at the same time, it works. Same with X.

also alt-shift-arrow doesn't always highlight the line as you would expect it would. sometimes you get the results of alt-arrow (end/home) and you have to do it again to get the shift to register. can be frustrating when trying to copy/edit links.
the moto copy-paste also interferes with android's copy-paste abilities. i've found that if you're used to how the D1 performs, blur makes it harder to use. for instance, you can't simply click the url in the browser to edit it. blur interrupts and asks you if you want to copy or share.
another thing that frustrates the crap out of me is the menu-V doesn't work in any part of the browser. instead, it asks you to save the page.
i'm hoping the tweaks done in ICS clears alot of that up (not that we'll see it on D3).
Pressing SPACE pages down, but pressing SHIFT + SPACE doesn't page up like it should
Edit: this is probably only in Dolphin HD

No, because he wants the tab to open in the front when it opens, like in Dolphin browser. What you said had nothing to do with the OP's question.
On a side note, if you opened the tab a while ago, and been in other apps, you need to fish around in your recent apps to find the tab, it is much easier if this "feature" is turned off and you can choose your tabs in chrome.

Well you did indeed say launching new tabs
That's just the way Chrome is and has always been, even on the desktop version. If you right click and open in new tab, it doesn't automatically change to that other tab.
There is currently a way to do it: when opening a link a new tab, there is a brief white flash on the lower half of the screen; quickly tap it, to open the new tab.
Edit: eff me, maybe not... I am sure this was working yesterday.

Holy thread revival Batman!
Did anyone else notice the Samsung messages widget is missing from Galaxy Note 9? I use the built in messages app (not google's messages app, samsungs), and I used to have the widget on my home screen on my Note 8 that showed the messages window. Now I don't see a widget for it?
I don't have the phone with me so I can't check right now. I did notice you can't change the text background anymore and that kind of pisses me off. I don't like goSMS or Textra. I don't want a 3rd party app. It sucks they stick you with no options to change background or chat bubble colors.
Its just not there. They also removed a feature I used quite often on my S8: Bixby dictation by pressing and holding button while keyboard is open. It was super convenient.
I noticed it too... If you find anything, please let me know! I'll do the same!
