Is this the end of I9000 as we know it???. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With dual core I9100 with dual-core processor & 'honeycomb' around the corner, I think its the end of an era called I9000. With more than 12 million I9000s sold, there is a bleak future for it.

well its not like those 12 million phones are just gonna stop working when the new one comes out..........well maybe 6 million might have the sd cards stop working but im in a debate with myself whether to get the atrix or the S2 its hard

Everything that has a beginning have an end

we probably still have gingerbread to play around. [optimistic mode]

I hope samsung doesn't stop making new phones. One flagship model a year is very reasonable. Aside from a few specialty models here and there for specific carriers, they certainly have the right idea. One new phone a year is great and the one I have now will do just fine until my contract is up.

Right all 12+ million are going straight in the garbage on galaxy s2 launch day, because everyone has the cash to buy a new $500+ phone every year and the galaxy S will all of the sudden be less capable.
'Bleak future' because the next version is out? Hate to break it to you but all these pieces of tech are dated and have replacements in the works before they even hit the shelves. There is no 'future' for any of them, just a moment in the sun and the glory starts fading almost instantly. Enjoy what you have and focus on the new tech when you're ready to pay for it again and start the cycle anew.

The performance of the samsung galaxy s is absolutly fast enough (-> imo with speedmod and lagfix it's brilliant). Furthermore Gingerbread will also come for the i9000, so no need to worry. I think Samsung will not drop the phone's support so soon.

Exactly, and with all the custom roms that are going around, Im pretty sure that you'll be able to get a few more updates out of the phone before it simply can't run the latest firmware anymore.

I hate these threads. Even with the Galaxy S 2, our phones will still be 'mid range' and will still do the things that we have been using them for!

The i9000 is the beginning
Besides, there are stil some things we can do, mostly kernel related.
Love to see GPU at 275mhz adjustment in kernel (only GPU, no CPU oc).
Remove the 56/57 FPS restriction in kernel
Update GPU's drivers in kernel

Considering cm7 is almost stable, i'd say this is the beginning of the i9000
As long as google makes new firmware's available and the cm team keep up to date, our devices will as well. Just look at the G1
1.5 -> 1.6 -> 2.0 ->2.1 -> 2.2....
Developers + open source = We decide when a device is near its end

Even more, if you look at "older" device, like the HTC vogue, it got the latest version even if it was running WinMo before... Even if samsung cease support for the SGS and 2.3 or 2.4 is the last available "official" port, we got plenty of support from the devs in here for a long time!

Fail thread....................
CM7 is really stable, this is a huge leap towards future upgrades. It's took so long for the guys to get past all Samsungs crap and finally they're making real progress. So how is this the end of the i9000? There are plenty of REALLY old phones still running the latest version of android.

Dude don't be embarrassed, play as much snake and space invaders as you like!

At the end of the day with all these dual core processors are they really going to be able to do anything our single cores can't?
The only immediate advantage i can see is for gaming, its not like web browsing or texting needs two cores.
As for nfc well i can't see it replacing bank cards any time soon. Everyone thought visa and the like would spell the end for cash and it hasn't.
I think its a lot of fuss over nothing and is only gonna be good for people who like to measure their e-penis!

I actually think the SGS is in great shape with CM7 on the way. Plus its hardware can probably handle anything up to 2.4 and dual cores are not that big of a deal. So rest assured we still have a future ahead.

its totally depend on people interest,,,,,if dev os interested in one pertucular device then some how devlopment is going on,i had touch hd and still dev is cooking rom........................so its hard to say.and upto how long we will keep on buying new handset?every year new cellphone with new technology..........i think that is policy of mobile company to give less support to existing phone and sell new more,,,,,,,,i think ones they sell mobile they forgot coustomer,,,,,,tht why microsoft is on oxygen....

im more than happy with my SGS and i wont panic into buyins the SGS-2 until i think its necessary,
2x processors = 2x quicker battery drain... unless there is a massive breakthrough in powering a battery for longer.... we will all be carrying our own personal 'car battery' to keep our phones running.
it will be like going back to the 80's with a phone bigger than a breeze block.
but if you can afford a new SGS-2 by all means go for it !!! but us SGS 1 owners aint embarrassed... there wont be a massive difference IMO except our wallets will be lighter and maybe our credit rating a bit higher
who cares.

Can a noob like myself state that the OP is talking utter, utter nonsense without being accused of flaming? I know I shouldn't get irritated, and please let me know if you think I'm out of order, but such ludicrous generalisations as the OPs, stated as bald fact without any evidence whatsoever deserve to be shot down, IMHO.
I've had my Galaxy for two weeks. It's doing everything I need it to do, and thanks to the wonderful people here, it's tweaked to death, quick, responsive and has also become my main music player (thanks supercurio!). I see absolutely no need to even consider replacing it because something new and shiny is just around the corner. Something new and shiny is always just around the corner.
"This is the end as we know it"
"End of an era"
"Bleak future"
Good grief. Armageddon time.Just as well you're not being melodramatic, eh? I'll try to survive in this era (an era of less than a year? Of course!) as long as i can...
I think t1mann has it right.

[Q] Nexus One --> Galaxy S ?

I realise there was a giant mad thread about this that just got closed and I'm not interested in reforming that here. I have a few questions and would like some discussion but not interested in arguments
1) Prices where you are?
Where I live (New Zealand) Nexus One cost about the same as the Galaxy S. I'm just wondering is the Nexus One regarded as a cheaper phone in America or where ever you live (I realise it's not sold anymore, but before they stopped selling it) and when I say cheaper I mean purely money wise, not feel or anything.
I ask this because I've seen the statement before: "Galaxy S is great but it's not worth the extra money from a Nexus" and just wondering if that's how it really is.
2) Gaming?
I'm curious as I see a lot of people here defending their Nexus One's over the Galaxy S and I understand the reasons they give however I have a feeling all the people that prefer their Nexus One's to any Galaxy S series phone don't use their phones for gaming much, if at all. Would this be correct?
I currently own a Nexus One and I have to be honest for gaming it really sucks. I was so excited for Gameboy & Playstation emulators and I can't play any kind of RPG or Action game on them that requires me to push more than 1 button at a time or it registers my fingers all over the place!
My Situation
Due to prices being what I believe to be a little backwards here I can sell my old Nexus One (with a couple of little marks around it, etc, basically it's just used) and buy a BRAND NEW 8GB Galaxy S and it would only cost me a maximum of $100 ($70 US) or if things work out well it'd cost me nothing at all. Which brings me to question 3...
3) Should I 'upgrade'?
I know a lot of people don't consider it an 'upgrade' however for me personally I consider it entirely worth it for the GPU & multitouch alone. I brought my Nexus One excited of the idea of multi touch gaming and am guttered at how virtually any emulated or 3d game performs on my N1 (I was totally unaware of the lack of multi-touch when I brought the phone)
Also I'm interested in any sort of discussion on reasons for/against switching to a Galaxy S but please no NEXUS ONE IS BEST DIE IPHONE FANBOY GALAXY IS CHEAP PLASTIC crap. I love my Nexus but I feel the Galaxy better suits me.
Ok. I was probably one of the ones who was arguing in the other thread but I didnt start it. I got bashed because I said the Galaxy is the better phone.
Anyways Im not going down that road again. Ive got both phones at this moment and if your into gaming I say go to the Galaxy. Is the galaxy a way better phone, no, But what it has is definetely a upgrade. Ive said it before and ill say it again. On the sgs I never have to check my memory worrying about if I got enough room to install a new app, I used to check daily on my n1. I never ever check memory as I still got over 1.2 gigs left and about 120 apps installed. Gaming, Im not to into gaming as Im a 27 year old man, but when I do Id like to be able to play them well, and On the n1 it was a total failure. Toon warz would wig out when you shoot and run at the same time and when you let go of shooting it will still be shooting because of the axis problem. Pinch to zoom alone even in the browser isnt even as close to the SGS.
The super amoled is way better than regular amoled and makes it look like a TFT screen.
Im not gonna go into more about how the sgs beats the n1 cause ive done that enough, so Ill answer your question.
Hell yes I am, the SGS is the better device, by a lot? No, but enough for me to upgrade. The MT alone is enough for a upgrade and you wanna play games? well the SGS has no problem playing toon warz. I need a top device that can multitouch, and the N1 will never, ever be able to play MT games well. Even the old Iphone2g had better MT screen than the n1. I actually laugh at people who think the N1 handles 3d games as well as the SGS. Just not gonna happen. Go on youtube and watch on Android.com I believe the benchmarks vs SGS against droid x, evo and n1, the dude even plays asphalt and even the Video maker says that the SGS blows it all away.
Im not dogging the n1 cause im keeping mine, its a great phone and a great developer phone, but if you want gaming or for movies, the n1 is just not the device for that. The SGS sounds more like its what your looking for, True MT, More responsive for games, bigger screen and Waaaay brighter.
SGS FTW....
No hating on me this time please. The n1 is great, but common, the SGS out Specs it in almost all departments.
1) Not from what I remember, I payed $530 out right for my Nexus when it came out, Most of the current galaxy s phones are currently going for cheap on Amazon and such. I think it was basically free with a 2 year last I saw.
2) The GalaxyS has a getter GPU then the Nexus One (and most of the snapdragon phones to be fair) so the GalaxyS would most definitely play games better then the Nexus One.
3) It appears that 3D gaming is important to you, and if thats what you want the the GalxS phones should work great for you. Also the CPU is a smidgin' better on the GalxS then on the Nexus.
Most people in the Nexus One forums including myself see anything that doesnt give the freedom like a dev phone is a downgrade. That is where the "its not an upgrade" thing is coming from. Because with the mod community you basically never have an old phone, you can always flash a new rom and be totally different from anyone else.
-Cheers
If you want something for gaming i suggest waiting for a Tegra 2 tablet or if you dont like tablets LG is making some Tegra 2 Phones which will be super fast..or you can get the Milestone 2 when it comes out.
I don't for a second believe Samsung will put the requisite priority on upgrading the OS to the latest Android. I think it will get upgraded, unlike the Behold II, but I don't think it'll happen for MONTHS after phones like the N1. Also, Touchwiz is hideous and changing to ADW or LP doesn't help with the cartoonish icons.
That being said, I AM jealous of the screen, processor, and multitouch sensor... just not enough to put myself into what I know will be a very frustrating position in a few months.

That's one thing I'll definitely miss however I'm an absolute sucker for interface and screens.
For example the physics bounce back in list menus on the Galaxy S! Such a simple thing but to me I see it as so important as it's something that you constantly encounter and I love the overall feel it gives to the device.
and I think anyone that has used it has to admit that the 4 inch screen is beautiful and I wasn't sure I would but after using it I think the 4inch is a great size (I'm thinking Droid X & EVO would be too big for me)
I'm sad to admit it but the iPhone still kicks Android's ass with its gestures and physics. I prefer Android in every other area of the OS but for example the Gallery and Web Browser in iPhone if you have a play with it you'll see what I mean with the pinch to zoom, it is really really nice to use. I always wished my Nexus had that and I'm glad to see Samsung took some steps towards getting that feel to Android (with the list bounce back etc.)
but back to my point. I love the developer side of my Nexus one and that we get new versions etc so early however I'm the sort of person that everytime I open the Gallery app I have to do a wee pinch on each photo just because I love gestures and multi touch so much or will unlock my phone just to look at the big screen and the live wallpaper with water rippling in my hand and I think thats why I feel so drawn to the Galaxy S with its giant bright screen and amazing GPU that can render that awesome Samsung live water wallpaper with ease (check it out if you haven't)

I see what you're saying and I considered this as well however with my situation that I mentioned in the OP I currently have the opportunity to move to a Galaxy S with little or no cost, however when it comes to these next generation devices coming out later this year my Nexus will be worth a lot less and it will cost a lot more to upgrade to them.
I probably will buy a new device about mid way through next year and I will be willing to put more money into one then, however I don't want to (or mainly my girlfriend doesn't want me to ) put another few hundred into a phone in a few months time.

Pinch to peak is horrible on the n1. Funny thing is they added that while testing it on the n1. I guess they assumed no more clearpad 2000.
I love mt gestures as well. Feels futuristic.

I believe phones work different over there how you buy them on contract and get them cheaper etc.
Here you just buy whatever phone and put a sim card in it, be it 'pre-pay' or 'on account'. So all phones are 'unlocked'
Looking on Amazon Galaxy S phones are listed for 670 USD?

i am the owner of a nexus one. nearly all my phones have been from htc. i love the htc brand because of the community(xda). it is a fact everybody has to agree. an example the i5700 (comparable to the hero) but u can take a look yourself who got the better development... xperia x10 ...excellent hardware but no community support and they merely got root.
Is it an upgrade?
Hmmmm...arguable. Hardware- absolutely. the samsung i9000 is definetely an upgrade in terms of hardware but u have to keep in mind that it is 7 months newer than n1. both phones have their goods and bads. no phone is perfect. I said arguable because i am sure software wise that n1 is and will be superior. Most of us here like to flash roms, change builds..... this makes the difference (as i stated in the beginning).i do not think i9000 will get the support of this community. Just take a look at how many custom roms are present for i9000. Also at the end of the year , n1(google's developers phone) will definetely be gettting the gingerbread whereas the i9000 will be stuck on 2.2. remember that i9000 already got the upgrade from 2.1 to froyo ; so 2 upgrades for a phone is less likely. this is the policy of phones companies, instead of pushing an upgrade for the phone, they will release a new phone with gingerbread .
Is it worth?
i wont be upgrading the n1 until the 2gz or dualcore processors are out but It depends on u and ur means. Phones nowadays do not reign as a flsgship more than 3-4 months , maybe less. eg... desire hd will be out soon, then in Q2 2011, samsung is releasing a phone with 2gz processor with 1gb memory, ... android 4.0. If you have the money, ... ur choice.
My advice...
If you are so concerned about gaming, sincerely.. i would advise you to take an iphone. I myself would never buy and iphone (hate it cause i am flash addicted and i am not into games). We here at xda tend to critisize the iphones but i have to admit that it is the best at multimedia purposes mainly gaming....
You can upgrade to i9000 if u want but maybe i am wrong but the android market currently do not have many graphical games that would suit ur needs nd by the time these games get developed, then it will be time to reupgrade the phone... vicious circle!

I'm not entirely about gaming and I couldn't stand to buy an iPhone, many things about it disgust me. Such as a homescreen that is only an app draw!? How they deny flash, how they block countless applications, how I have to run iTunes to do anything.. argh I could go on forever. So iPhone is not for me, I love Android. As I said before however if it came down to it I think I like live backgrounds, multitouch gestures, large screens more than I like the development side... Very tough choice though.
[Q] Cyanogen Mod on Galaxy S
Also on another note I believe Galaxy S series is soon going to become a Cyanogen Mod supported device which pretty much means it'll get all the development I need am I right in assuming this??
I mean, hell it even brought 2.2 to the G1! So I can assume if Cyanogen does a version 7 for 3.0 and Galaxy S is a supported device that I could eventually see 3.0 through Cyanogen Mod if Samsung never decided to do an update?

I'm not really that worried about Galaxy S development btw. There has been more than 2 million (I think it might be over 3?) sold already counting US & International version sales. Just two days ago when a test Froyo build got leaked the Galaxy S (international) development thread had over 1000 people viewing it. I think all the rom development (although there already are a few out atm) are waiting for Samsungs offical 2.2 which is coming out in a couple of weeks.
Galaxy TAB. Prob run same as the Galaxy S. Why go with 4" when you can have 7" screen. Wait and see tomorrow what the specs are going to be. Keep your n1 and wait for the TAB i say. I bought a captivate. Surely a great phone. I got frustrated with the development on the Captivate. I figured it will be that way. CM will be out but who knows when it will be released no word. I bet when a official froyo will be released they will release the CM6 as well. Gives them some time to work on it. If you really want to game and watch movie do it on a bigger screen. Why on a 4" screen. My n1 will hold up to what i need to do to survive a day without any laggs, glitch or whateva i throw at it. It runs like a champ. N1 will only be replaced by N1. Yeah not good for game but it will do everything else. So if you looking for a gamer type of phone, SGS is good to go but you will be without much development. Plus even with CM, i don't see ginerbread running on the SGS. My 2 cents.

Dont be confused here, they are separate phones, each will require different roms. Do not make the mistake of counting all sgs phones in the same basket, as far as the mod community is concerned they are separate phones each require separately coded roms.

Agreed!!!!! all galaxy s phones are not the same!
Also another point to be noted is that number of phones sold is not necessarily directly proportional to the development ...
e.g, 1. i guess that (like they say) nexus one is a flop in sales but however has had enormous activity in the development section.
2. Motorola milestone/droid had an enormous success in sales(also sold millions). but did it have the kind of development we are used to???
It all comes to whether Samsung will improve their security on the bootloader bla bla bla on their froyo upgrade. and depends whether the quality chefs are shifting to the sgs or not.

Correct, but they will be easy to cross mod since most the files and codes are alike, yes they will require different Roms and etc, but if the epic 4g can do something chances are the others can with a slightly different way.

[Q] how will the galaxy be in 1-2 years?

hey!
I'm considering getting a Galaxy S I9000 device, although I have a couple of concerns and I was hoping you guys might help me figure them out.
the thing I'm worried about the most is how will the galaxy S be in 1 or 2 years.
I'm talking mostly app wise, because from what I've read, the new high end mobiles will use dual core processors, which means special apps that run only on them, thus the galaxy won't be able to run.
I'm also worried about the support from samsung and google - is it possible that they will state they aren't supporting the galaxy anymore? samsung will say they won't upgrade the touchwiz like HTC said about the HTC Sense, and google will say the new android versions can't be installed on the galaxy s? (sorry if this is a dumb and silly question, but I really don't know what's gonna happen )
now I know there is no guarantee in this things, but I want to 'minimize the damage'....
my main dilemma is whether I should buy the galaxy now, or wait a couple of months for the S2/Atrix/Sensation devices to become cheaper (they cost too much for me...), and then have a mobile with a dual core processor which will probably serve me longer than the Galaxy S will?
thing is, if I'll wait for the mobiles mentioned above to become cheaper I might get caught in an infinite loop, because in one year from now I might be saying the same thing about those devices......
what do you guys think? am I being brainwashed by all these commercials about the dual core processors and there's nothing to worry about, or is it really that much of a deal and I should wait a while for the prices to go down, and dual core processors is really a must in modern smartphones?
thanks!
You can keep telling yourself "should I wait to get something better" for an enternity, there will always be something better coming out.
Most things anyone normal will use their phone for does not need dual core, atm for the common user its only for a little smoother websurfing. The power of new mobiles wount be utalized to its fullest. Mostly in games but who buys a phone to mainly play games on?
If you dont need a phone now then sure wait, but if you are itching to get something new I would have bought it now. The months spent waiting wount be worth it compared to the months you could have fun with this awsom phone
Like above.
If you're waiting because the newer ones are too expensive: get the SGS. If money is not an issue i would say wait for the SGS2 otherwise you'll really get into a loop.
The SGS has great memory (512mb), speedy processor (1GHz) with great 3D capabilities and lots of storage built in for apps which will serve you well for the next couple of years. It is still a top of the line device after one year.
Also has to be said: LIKELY the gingerbread will be the last official android release and no more support. But given the huge fan crowd, there will always be workaround for newer versions, thanks to many developers who are reading and actively contributing to this forum
hey
thanks for the replies.
like you guys said, if I'll wait now I might find myself in the same dilemma regarding other devices.
however, there's one main difference - it's a question of whether the dual core processors are worth waiting for or not... I assume that in one year from now all new device will be released with those processors , so the 'gap' between what I will want by then (SG2 for instance) and whats about to come out a year from now won't be that big like now between the galaxy s and the s 2.
I'll cut it down to a very simple question -
2 years from now, will we still see new apps coming out for the galaxy S device?
In two years time there will be another big processor development i.e. the difference between single and dual core wont be the determining factor of whether your phone can or cant use new apps.
I consider myself really lucky to have purchased a SGS soon after it was released, before all the hype and before a huge dev community was formed. A big Dev community is what gives a phone longevity, not manufacturing support that wanes as soon as their latest and greatest phone is released.
My advice would be to go with a phone that has a big dev community = SGS, Nexus phones and most HTC devices.
I am waiting for the 8 core SGS mark 12 .

Android 4.0 Source

Android 4.0 Source is out! Any chance to get this in the LG Thrill 4G I would definitely be keeping it then.

I was wondering the same thing. if this is possible I might not even update it to GB cause it wouldnt make sense. Hopefully its possible.
Its as possible as the source for GB turning into a GB update. That is to say, no its not possible.
LG needs to make the update and bake in the drivers. It took them a few days shy of a year for GB, maybe they can shave that down to 9 months for ICS. So, as Google announces 4.1, start looking for 4.0.
The Galaxy Nexus is not going to provide any ports to the Thrill, or any other device. Its the only device using that CPU/GPU combo. Its the only device to date with its CPU at all (processor in Thrill is different model number 4460 vs 4430, it may as well be entirely different) If ICS is your goal, the Galaxy Nexus is the fastest and easiest way. Otherwise you play the waiting game for the OEM to put out the update, then wait some more for the carrier to bloatify it, then wait some more for the small base of devs to de-bloatify it.

The skyrocket has lte actual 4g that if the only difference add far as performance

That's the only difference in data speed. That's also the only area the i727 is better. In EVERY other way the i777 is better.
They have the same screen resolution, but because the 727 screen is bigger, so the pixel density is lower, most people won't notice, but its worth mentioning.
The processor in the 727 is a qualcomm chip oc'd to 1.5 GHz, vs a Exynos chip at 1.2 GHz. People say the qualcomm chip is inferior, and choppy. Most people won't notice it, but it is there. The exynos can be oc'd higher than the qualcomm chip. The qualcomm chip is the reason it won't get i777 or i9100 ROM ports. With the i777 and i9100 running the same chip you can port any i9100 ROM really easy.
I don't know specifics on GPU, but its widely accepted the i777 has better graphics and 3D processing.
The 777 is thinner and lighter.
They both have disabled nfc on board. Att to possibly unlock at a later time, maybe at ICS rollout.
If you have LTE coverage you need to think about the choice, if you don't have LTE, there is absolutely no reason to get the 727. I talked a little about other differences in your other thread.

Did you check the TI site and read the 4460 documentation? The processors are almost identical. The 4460 is just a little more capable. Its still in the OMAP4 family with the exact same architecture. We'll have the LG gingerbread drivers shortly as well as the galaxy nexus ICS drivers which will get us started there. Kernel shouldn't be too big of an issue as again, same architecture on CPU, same exact gpu. Yea its gonna take a lot of time to get everything working but we don't need LG to do it. GB was more of a shot in the dark for this phone than ICS will be. Zero omap4 devices released with GB but it still got ported to a couple Motorola devices. ICS released for two devices, both omap4.

I said this about GB too. I hope I'm wrong for all of your sake's. When people were saying GB was around the corner (in September), and I said December, people said I was being too cynical. Well ... here we are, December is right around the corner, and the GB port is not flashable in CWM, nor is it complete. I over-cynicized a little, but not much.
I think it's all great on paper, just like building a AOSP GB build for the phone looked simple, did that ever actually get off the ground?
As I look in the past, I use that to forecast the future. My guess is that there is no where near a functional daily use ROM for the Thrill until a ICS build comes from LG (I would guess no sooner than July). If the the Nexus S and Captivate running the exact same hardware (CPU/GPU plus lots of others) both made from the same company, cannot share ROMs with lots of dev support, I just find it hard to believe that a phone with a similar chip, packaged with other chips (WiFi, BT, USB, Power, comination unknown) by another OEM is not going to provide useful drivers for the small dev community here. Again, I would love to be wrong, but ...
To be honest I think the Thrill is more Thrilling (rim-shot) because it's an underdog, and it feels like a start-up, ground-floor opportunity to build and jury rig everything and frankenstein it together. I think it would be fun, and I would have loved to have been involved had I stayed. But, I moved on, as many others have. I can't wait for months for something like this when I will only have that phone for a year. I don't hang on to old tech, I sold my Captivate and it paid for my Galaxy S II, talk about the circle of life.
The Thrill is definately an underrated phone, but it's also not the highest end phone. As I said before, as it stands it's definately the best AT&T phone for less than $100, it's the king of the mid-range offerings. Unless you can get the i777 for $50 or less, like many places have advertised for Black Friday.
I wish everyone the best of luck with the Thrill, but the reality train is leaving the station, and I feel my welcome may just be wearing thin here.
It seems that LG doesnt really care about the consumer because they release a phone and update the firmware when its not even new anymore and its funny because it seems like the Thrill will be getting GB and everyone else will be getting ICS. =(

Thats very good news , Hopefully it gets released soon. Instead of using GB I would go straight to ICS when its released. Does anyone have the link to the video because I cant seem to find it.
Those types of ports that are half functional are popping up every where for tons of phones.
They will not support some basic phone functions for months. There is no way 3D will work until LG builds the drivers, and they won't release them until they release the full ICS update. Things like WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, data, etc will all (or mostly) be missing for quite a while. Making ICS run and making a daily driver with ICS are two very different things.
I watched that video, there is already a comporable port running on the i9100. Proof that both using similar but different omap4 processors means nothing. The processor is the most simple basic part of the functionality, its everything else that's going to be hard.
Try to keep some perspective, and realistic hopes.

seriously i know your trying to help us keep a grip on our excitement.. but its starting to get annoying seeing your comments pop up here all the time after you switched weeks ago.. and they are all how the thrill has potential but im so happy with my choice... like we cant even get our hopes up because your too afraid of our dreams getting dashed to pieces... we should all follow your example. i know thats not what you mean but it feels that way...
like many others i choose this phone based off the hardware specs... so i will be sticking it out for a few months at least if not for a few years.
we know the decision you made to switch and that you have support for the thrill and knew it to be a good device.. there is no rule about posting in forums for phones you dont have.. but please... please ease back a bit on clarifying all the realities for us...
there is nothing wrong in wishing.. we had no development for ages, it feels like, and now we have some things to look forward too, thats all!
so give us our hopes please... *tears up* its all we have!

He's a legit cm dev. Its NOT a half functional port. Its the beginning of an ICS source build a day after source was released. It took him a few hours to get touchscreen working. Its NOT one of the fake SDK ports that have been floating around. They've already said it will be ATLEAST 2 months before we should even start expecting any updates on cm9. Hows your build of ics going? Your claims on timeline, etc, MUST be based on your own firsthand progress, correct? You are actually contributing something to the community with all your development knowledge, correct?
You claim to be saving us from false hopes. But the way I take that is that you are assuming we as a community are to ignorant and naive to realize the time/process of getting a new OS on a new device. NOBODY here has said we expect this to be a rapid process. We know it takes time.
Hop on your faux white horse and ride back over to your fanboy forum. You've contributed absolutely nothing to this forum and I assume the same is probably true there. But seeing how as you actually have that phone you have a reason to lurk over there.

Wait wait wait...
You mean AT&T doesn't give super fast firmware updates to their phones?!
Here's what I will say about this phone so far...
I like it. It's treated me better than any Samsung phone I've had. It does everything I need it to.
I can't really remember ever saying "I wish this phone could..." that I wouldn't say about any other phone.
I hear people talk about how fast this phone is and that phone is and how fast the GSII compared to the Thrill. But how much faster is faster? The web browser pops up a second faster? A file is downloaded 10 seconds faster? I don't really think a lot of that is that big of a deal. It almost reminds me of the Crackberry forums when they were talking about not going to Android because the email isn't push (which isn't true) and so you got your emails a whole 30 seconds later. I mean, c'mon, how many of us are in a position where if we don't get that email 30 seconds faster our entire corporation loses billions?
I think it'd be cool to get 2.3 or above right now because there are a couple of games I'd like to play that are on 2.3 or above. But considering I have 25 games already installed and over 1/2 of those I ahven't touched, it's okay.
I've had a few Samsung phones and everyone of them I had had a lot of issues. I went through 8 Captivates. Now I did have to return one Thrill and exchange it but every Samsung phone I've had, I've had to get replaced at least twice. I keep saying I want a Note but then think about how bad I've had it with Samsung phones.
Phone technology is crazy. The thrill came, then the GSII, then the GSII skyrocket and the HTC Vivid, then there are three new Galaxy devices coming to AT&T in the next 2-3 months, and whatever awesome quad core devices, and then pretty soon we'll have the hologram phones in which you tell the phone to contact someone and they pop out of the phone like in Star Wars.
Honestly, I think I need a couple more pairs of shoes more than I need a newer phone.

I won't get drawn into a pissing contest regarding dev support of the Optimus 3D vs the Galaxy S II (i9100).
But, I will respond.
I'm sorry I over estimated and called that port half functional, you are right: its not a half functional port.
The build status of CM9 for the phone that half the Cyanogen team was given months ago is unknown to me. I made no claims on timelines, just forecasts based on the past and opinion.
There is indeed a very similar ICS ROM built for the i9100 (and by extension the i777) from the source that just dropped, but I cannot comment as to whether or not it was put together by a "legit cm dev."
I am not a developer, no. I am just an observer, an observer that tends to be realistic with expectations, and generally accurate.
I don't accuse the community here of being ignorant or naive. I can see that some people here do have realistic expectations.
I too was once an Aria, Captivate and Thrill fanboy. Today I am a GS II fanboy. I picked my team, as you have too. I don't think there is anyone on xda that isn't passionate about their phone.
I will not dignify further condescending comments from you with a response. This is the last time you will see me on the Thrill forums. Do not take my future lack of response as an admission of your perceived superiority. And do not take my comments to imply I believe I am better than you. I know you built a ROM, and were the first to share how to port O3D ROMs. Just because I never used your contributions I will not be so arrogant to say they don't exist.
And with that, I will be on my way. Again, best of luck to every one with a Thrill.

so my next phone will be a motorola phone with intel inside it.
goodbye samsung and yours sh*tty support.

fact is, Samsung is a company that is only interesed in your money, just like all other companies out there. They're not a charity organisation. They want you to buy their phones.
the SGS has gotten 2 major firmware updates. eclair to froyo and froyo to gingerbread. There's not alot of phones out there that have gotten the same luck.
Of course it would be nice to receive an ICS updates but frankly i don't care. There's already a good working unofficial ICS rom and official Gingerbread rom does it's job more than pleasant.
I would say it's your loss since samsung always make better phone with better price compare to apple made in china trash. I know the software is not too good buy you have plenty developers here that can help the phone runs better. If you want ics just used one cosmics rom.

At the end of the day the SGS is near 2 years old and seeing as the SGS3 is around the corner I would consider the SGS old!
Anycase there is a ICS ROM for the SGS, just used that and be happy!
onecosmic and cyanogen can not fix the camera and other minor things without the drivers from samsung and i have 2.3 almost 6 months. so no i dont consider one year of updates to be that good. you want your phone, to be updated for a year and then throwit to the garbage?.
one year of updates for a phone who sold millions world wide is not enough and because of people like you it will coninue.
i tried 20 different roms so dont try to sell me that i can try onecosmic rom. the camera and other minor things not working correctly i am on cyanogen mod and i am ont happy with the camera and the battery life, tv out is not working and other minor bugs.
edit: not that i have any bad things to say about onecosmic and cm7 developers i know it is not their fault, they dont have the drivers. so thanks to all the developers out there for their best efforts.
im on 2.3.6... why dont you flash? its smooth as ever. Im happy for what it is. Do yourself a favour and get the value pack rom

To be honest i'd be happy with a good Gingerbread (stock), I don't think it's been as good as the last Froyo 2.2.1 update, which suddenly made the phone work properly.
I think its a shame that there isn't at least a two year life span (a lot of phone contracts are 24 months) in terms of updates, but I also understand this technology is probably one of the fastest moving.

Samsung didn't design ALL components in the SGS, they have bought many from THIRD party (like audio part from Wolfson, etc. etc.). You have open source drivers for SOME devices and many of chip-makers sell Chips + Closed drivers with limited support. It's not the Samsung's fault if they don't want release drivers, Samsung use only BINARY drivers for some devices ! Blame some *****ng chip-maker firms. I used to fight a lot with Adaptec to have some source code to make working some $500 Hardware Raid card for FreeBSD some years ago, many chip-maker are VERY reluctant to give drivers code, and it's not a new story in Linux world.
Windows and Intel will make better ? Are you serious or just blind ? Why Vista was so "unstable" in his debut ? Drivers, Drivers and Drivers.. like Android. iOS ? Another joke ? Apple use ONE hardware and chip-makers are forced to give the code (or they're excluded from Apple, so they give all Apple want), iPhone is a very well sell and Apple is one of the richest firm in the world, chip-makers aren't totally stupid if they want to sell million and million of their chips.
And for your information : First ROM for SGS are build in March 2010, latest is Dec 2011, what a poor support..
I can see Samsung absolutely ****ting themselves reading the op. Dumb thread.

This is, IMHO, the main Android drawback.
Android is not really "open". It's a marketing hype.
Producers like Samsung make heavy "modifications" to their phones and do not relase their drivers.
We're lucky that SGS has an hardware similar to the Nexus S, otherwise I doubt we could have a stable ICS porting for our phone.
My next phone, if I'll chose again Android, will be a Google Experience One.
Bye.

Time to upgrade....

I have been enjoying sgs experience for quite a long time now( I still do) but as device is slowly aging I think its time to upgrade. I'm currently waiting for release of sgs3. What do you suggest, is it worth waiting for it or its better to go and buy galaxy nexus or sgs2? Are there more devices worth buying right now?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Personally I would wait for the S3 then do some comparisons between phones from different vendors.
One good site to make some comparisons is gsmarena.com , they generally have good reviews and very in depth information about the phone's hardware and specifications too
Just wait for the S3, I heard that it will have a quad core cpu, so it will beat the S2 and all predecessors for sure
gsmarena is also a great site, personally I use it everytime I am looking for something about phones they are great!
galaxy S is still a great phone, if it's slow then you can do a hard reset, maybe it helps with something, and by installing a "simple" rom you can also achieve more performance!
I think it's to soon decide.
U need to know if the phone will be common and then decide cuz probably Samsung will stop developing versions for it and then you depend on the community (look for example Galaxy s 9000 and ICS).
However I'm not getting new phone because sgs is slow or things like that.....and yea I decided, I'm gonna get sgs3, ty both

There is nothing to suggest that the S3 will not be a popular phone.
Unless Samsung make a complete **** up with it, it will be as popular as the SGS and SII.
All the phone manufacturers will at some point stop ROM development at some point with a phone.
Go talk to owners of other Android phones and you will find many are not happy with their device not having ICS support.
There is no reason why the SII won't be able to support the next version of Android (and beyond) and the same will apply to the S3.
If Samsung do carry on support the phones then great but if they give up after a 2 year cycle on a product, I can see their point.
OP, my contract is up for renewal in July and depending on the reviews of the S3 (I think they will be good), providing I can get one for a nominal upgrade free, I'll get one otherwise I'll get an S2.
