Back up Nook Color after rooting? - Nook Color General

So, after yesterday's "authentication error" and reset, I've got this thing all back to the way I want it. Now, my question is... what do I need to do to back it up, so I can restore it should this happen again? I've got Titanium Backup on it, but I want to be sure I'm doing the best option to get me a good restore later on.
Thanks, Lori

Boot back into Clockwork Recovery... and create a backup. From there, you should be good.

What do you mean "back into Clockwork Recovery?" I used AutoNooter 3.0, if that matters.

"backup" is subjective... You could go all out and put a small CWM image on a 32 gig card, boot it up and hit ADB then DD the internal storage into an image on the SD card... but that is likely excessive.
A better idea would be to install the CWM the Cyanogen authors created or use some SD bootable CWM and use it to make a nandroid backup.

Thanks again. Is there some place that explains what all this means, 'cause I have no idea what Nandroid is or what DD stands for or what any of that means.

Nandroid Backup - full backup image of the OS from the internal nand (nand+android=nandroid, cute, huh?) flash nand memory. Think of it as an .iso image.
CRW-Clockwork Recovery. It's a custom recovery tool that allows you to do various things like backup and restore your nandroid. It exists on the boot partition and you access it using various button press/hold combinations at boot which vary depending on how you've got your system setup.
AutoNooter- is just (!) a tool that makes it easy to root your Nook. Once rooted, this tool is not used again.

So, if you use Nandroid, where do you store the image? Can you store it on your PC?

Store on uSD or PC

I keep the latest backup on the uSD in the folder it defaults to, then copy the prior 1 to the PC. I only keep 2 BU at a time. The BU are good sized: 400-500MBs, so it makes sense to me this way. You're milage may vary.
Good luck m8!

If you use Monster Rootpack 0.7, you can boot CWM off of the sd card and store your backup on the SD. From there you can remove your SD card and read/store the contents on your PC.

nandroid backup issue and apps2sd question

1) So I went to run nandroid backup and it's saying
"Performing backup."
"Error running nandroid backup. Backup not performed."
That's all it says, and takes me back to the recovery screen...
I'm assuming this has to do potentially with the storage on my SD Card... any suggestions?
I am running Cyanogen 4.0.4 w/ Enoch v1.3
2) is there any way to roll back from Apps2SD so that Apps2SD stops working? Is it just as simple as re-partitioning the SD as FAT32 and move along? will cyanogen move the apps liek before? or should I reflash at that point?
thanks a bit of a newb, finally signed up here as I've been floating around a bit...
thanks in advance... Also I did search the forum, in hope someone had the issues I did, but found nothing...
Could this be due to the partition of the SD card for apps2sd??!
just curious.. since that's the only thing I've changed since my last nandroid backup...

yes, that might be it. you may have corrupted your nandroid files somehow or just plain lost them. i hope you were smart enough to do a complete sd back up onto your computer before doing any partitioning.
if you did a full back up onto your computer you should have a nandroid folder in there. drag and drop that nandroid folder onto your sd card after you delete the current one that is on your sd card. then do a restore.
I DEFINITELY made backups... my time as a unix admin, has taught me the necessity of backups lol...
so probably safest to :
a) reformat my sd card back to fat32
b) copy nandroid backup
c) restore
or
a) reformat sd card back to fat32
b) wipe
c) reflash CM 4.0.4
d) create a new nandroid backup
which is the best option?

try the first method. if it doesn't work, just do the second since that is the only leftover option, lol. good to know you made backups .
hey Opasha... thanks for the suggestions on fixing this, I opted for route number 2 as it seemed the freshest, and i had some spare time to get everything set the way I wanted... and was able to complete a successful nandroid backup now...
So thanks again for the help!
and yes...

can I take an SD card w/ apps(2sd) and place in new phone

Hi, I was wanting to take my SD card from the G1 I use everyday and place it in my other G1. (reason: the other one physically looks better, and I'm thinking of selling one)
So, theoretically... Shouldn't I be able to do a nandroid backup and/or a bart backup via recovery, turn off both phones, place the SD card into the new(other) phone, boot into recovery, do a nandroid/bart restore. (I assume bart correct?) Then wouldn't the sd card work just the same as it did on the other phone?
Has anyone tried this? I couldn't find anything specific on this online. Will this work?
Thanks

Well... yes and no.
If you do a nandroid backup you will notice in the nandroid folder a strange number. (ex HT012345678)
The nandroid restore process verifies your serial number prior to doing the restore process.
Easy workaround might be to simply rename it to the other serial number of the other device. It should work just fine as long as both phones have the same SPL.
Take note however that this method may not be supported and you should make backups of your backups (not to sound redundant) just in case.
update: so I finally tried it.
Here's what I did:
backup everything on my SD card to my computer.
Did a nandroid backup, then a bart backup.
Turned off both phones, put my sim and the sd card in the new phone.
booted into recovery, did a bart restore and everything works great!
Note: the nandroid restore did fail. Bart however, did work.
I didn't try switching the serial number yet, but that most likely could work.

Backing up my stock nook?

Here comes a noob question, so bare with me here....
If I wanted to backup my stock 1.2.0 Nook (non-rooted), could I do this?
1. Boot from my SD card that has CWR 3.0.2.8 loaded.
2. Select the backup option in the menu.
3. After it's done, remove my sd card and put in my computer.
4. Copy the*.img in the backup directory to a safe spot!
Is it really that easy? Will that do a complete backup of everything (all partitions) on my nook? Then if I ever want to go back from being rooted, just restore that *.img and I'm good to go?
*almost* that easy
One thing you need to be aware of is that the CWR boot environment needs (in my experience) the full path to the backups it made to be able to see them again.
So you need to grab the /clockworkmod tree intact and save it, rather than fishing out the .IMG files.
To restore, recreate your CWR disk and drop the tree in.
Also, I've seen some things happen with either 1.2 or a diff between the CWR on the device and the CWR on the card where a restore that looked fine and took a long time ultimately wound up not succeeding.
So this is one you'd want to test before you built out a zillion bookshelves.
But this worked flawlessly for me when I was running 1.1, and I suspect the issue is I have a CWR 3.1 card and 3.2 something on the device (and making the backups by default.)
I've wondered this too, but since getting CM7 on my uSD have kind of forgotten about trying. Be sure to update if you give it a go!

[Q] Can TWRP use the backups from CWM ?

Hi
I am thinking to swtich to TWRP and I have some past CWM backup. So I want to make sure that I can use my past backups with the new manager.
thanks
I don't think it works like that
But you can use titanium backup and backup every thing there

They are definitely NOT compatible. You cannot use your CWM backups with TWRP, unfortunately. You could, however, flash your recovery back to CWM when needed. It's not like going to TWRP is one-way, with no way back to CWM.
go twrp all the way. why would you want old backups? just create new one to be safe with twrp after you flash recovery.

Nope...each are only compatible with its files. Why are you moving to TWRP...just curious?
Kinda related ...
Is it possible to have CWM as the recovery boot option **and** TWRP as the alternate recovery boot option? I think I could rename a few files uRecImg and uAltImg (or similar) on my nook Color, but I have yet to see something similar for the HD+.
Thanks in advance!

No, it does not work that way on the HD/HD+. You must choose one or the other.

Hi ive found out how to do it as I had same prob. Its an apk called nandroid manager.. just play with setting an add twrp or cwm as a source folder and you can restore like that..
Reason for Choosing TWRP

I would like to respond, i have tried all variants of CWM available for my Xolo Q700, and TWRP i would choose only because it gives you an option to see how much space you actually need on the SD card and how much you have.
with CWM the availabel space in storage is shown but after waiting 10-15minutes for all data to be backed up, you end up getting an error message 2.5GB of free space wasnt enough. it tries to save each data file one by one and after all space is taken up, it fails
please correct me if there is an update to CWM which attends to this issue.
being a newbie to rooted phone flashing (i started playing around just about an year back and i am now in a position to root, unroot or unbrick few phones....)
other than that, i would like to choose cwm because i see more development there than TWRP...
and CTR v2.4 though it uses CWM 6.0.4 , an older version, seems to be good with full touch control and optional aroma file manager...

Each device is different and requires different amounts of space to back up the device. Also it depends on how many apps you have installed. It could be that 2.5GB was not enough for your Xolo.
Both TWRP and CWM save the data files one by one, but both also compress them into archive files for each partition. The only difference between the two is TWRP predicts how much space is needed and CWM does not. I don't think there are any plans to change that.

Full back-up : rooted firmware + data + apps. Possible?

Hello,
I have an issue with the screen that is detaching more and more. So I plan to send it back to Sony SAV.
My phone is rooted and I really want to keep the firmware I am using right now (I do not want to move to Android 5).
I know how to copy my data, applications and so one. But I want a full backup to perform a full restore once it will be exchanged. Is there any way to do a full back-up with the firmware also?
Thanks,
Javier
Via twrp cwm and so on its easy to do that. (nandroid) But dont restore the ta partition if u get an new z3c.
Thanks, I will check that!

What do you use to back up your device now? I mean, when you rooted it, custom recoveries such as TWRP or CWM needed to be used to even flash the rooted firmware. Just use the same recovery you always use to create a full back-up and save the back-up to an SD card so you can restore from it on the new phone.
The backup I was referring to was only at application level, by means of an application backup such as MyBackup Pro.
If I correctly understand, I need to
On the old phone
Perform a backup using CWM
Copy the internal SD contents on a PC or an external SD card
On the new phone
root the new phone (that will come I guess with Android 5). No issue due to new Android version
Copy the old internal SD contents the internal SD card of the new phone
Restore the CWM backup of the old phone
With this procedure, the new phone will be at the exact same status as the old one.
Right or is there something missing?
