Here comes a noob question, so bare with me here....
If I wanted to backup my stock 1.2.0 Nook (non-rooted), could I do this?
1. Boot from my SD card that has CWR 3.0.2.8 loaded.
2. Select the backup option in the menu.
3. After it's done, remove my sd card and put in my computer.
4. Copy the*.img in the backup directory to a safe spot!
Is it really that easy? Will that do a complete backup of everything (all partitions) on my nook? Then if I ever want to go back from being rooted, just restore that *.img and I'm good to go?
*almost* that easy
One thing you need to be aware of is that the CWR boot environment needs (in my experience) the full path to the backups it made to be able to see them again.
So you need to grab the /clockworkmod tree intact and save it, rather than fishing out the .IMG files.
To restore, recreate your CWR disk and drop the tree in.
Also, I've seen some things happen with either 1.2 or a diff between the CWR on the device and the CWR on the card where a restore that looked fine and took a long time ultimately wound up not succeeding.
So this is one you'd want to test before you built out a zillion bookshelves.
But this worked flawlessly for me when I was running 1.1, and I suspect the issue is I have a CWR 3.1 card and 3.2 something on the device (and making the backups by default.)
I've wondered this too, but since getting CM7 on my uSD have kind of forgotten about trying. Be sure to update if you give it a go!

So now that I lured you in with my snazzy thread title I will hit you with the boring stuff. Im just lost on all the ROM Flash OCLF Kernel Lingo. I want to go to Froyo and currently have 2.1 with Voodoo. There doesnt seem to be any SOLID thread that gives you simple instructions on what it does, how to do it, etc.
I read somewhere that if you have the Voodoo on the phone currently you have to flash back to the stock ROM. Other thread dont really touch on if you have to flash back or if you just do the upgrade.
Second, what is going to be lost in the process. Again I see some thread that say you have to do a Master Delete that will erase everything on the phone then some are not clear if you have to erase everything. If you do have to wipe it clean what are you guys using the back up all your apps? I did a backup with ROM Manager last night as well as a App Backup with Astro. But where do the backed up files go? Is it smart enough to drop them on the external SD card?
I hate to post such a general question but I am just getting overwhelmed reading 6 million different threads about different versions that do different things.
Disable voodoo by creating a folder in the voodoo directory "disable-lagfix" (without quotes), reboot (this will take a while). When that is fine download Titanium Backup and use that to backup all your apps + data. Copy the Titanium Backup folder to your external sd card. Backup all the data you want on your internal sd card. Flash back to stock and do a master clear (enable usb debugging first), root and install RM/CWM, copy over the rom you want to flash to the internal sd card (DO NOT RENAME). Power off the phone remove your sim card and sd card. Boot into CWM and flash your rom.
ps. Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Let me know if I missed anything. Swyping this before bio class.
Edit: Do NOT restore system data

What he said. Also if you are new to flashing I would advise looking into the cognition thread. It is definitely the easiest and most user friendly rom. And actually if you are coming from 2.1 all you should need to do is disable the lagfix by above named method, and one click to stock using odin. Also can be found in cognition thread somewhere. Then flash. I have never had to do a master clear. And have never had even a minor problem with either odin flashes or CWM. This just would save a little time but by all means if you wanna stay safe as can be do a master clear.
Thanks. I got the Cognition rom loaded up and is working well. Although It is missing swype which I miss.

Huh? All my Cognition versions had swype.
Swyping....read at your own risk
I second that, I have always had swype as well. I know this sounds obvious and I am sure you have already tried this but cog sets the default as android keyboard try switching the input by long pressing the input box.

Might have to go into settings, locale and text and enable it. Not sure, never used it, but I have to do that for smart keyboard. It's a thought.
So, after yesterday's "authentication error" and reset, I've got this thing all back to the way I want it. Now, my question is... what do I need to do to back it up, so I can restore it should this happen again? I've got Titanium Backup on it, but I want to be sure I'm doing the best option to get me a good restore later on.
Thanks, Lori
Boot back into Clockwork Recovery... and create a backup. From there, you should be good.
What do you mean "back into Clockwork Recovery?" I used AutoNooter 3.0, if that matters.
"backup" is subjective... You could go all out and put a small CWM image on a 32 gig card, boot it up and hit ADB then DD the internal storage into an image on the SD card... but that is likely excessive.
A better idea would be to install the CWM the Cyanogen authors created or use some SD bootable CWM and use it to make a nandroid backup.
Thanks again. Is there some place that explains what all this means, 'cause I have no idea what Nandroid is or what DD stands for or what any of that means.

Nandroid Backup - full backup image of the OS from the internal nand (nand+android=nandroid, cute, huh?) flash nand memory. Think of it as an .iso image.
CRW-Clockwork Recovery. It's a custom recovery tool that allows you to do various things like backup and restore your nandroid. It exists on the boot partition and you access it using various button press/hold combinations at boot which vary depending on how you've got your system setup.
AutoNooter- is just (!) a tool that makes it easy to root your Nook. Once rooted, this tool is not used again.
So, if you use Nandroid, where do you store the image? Can you store it on your PC?
Store on uSD or PC

I keep the latest backup on the uSD in the folder it defaults to, then copy the prior 1 to the PC. I only keep 2 BU at a time. The BU are good sized: 400-500MBs, so it makes sense to me this way. You're milage may vary.
Good luck m8!

If you use Monster Rootpack 0.7, you can boot CWM off of the sd card and store your backup on the SD. From there you can remove your SD card and read/store the contents on your PC.
I don't know where to turn. I started a thread about my effed up nook but it got deleted (my fault) I'm completely at my wits end here. I had NookFroyo .68 working just fine on mine but like an IDIOT I thought it would be neat to try out CM7. Big mistake would not get past the animated N screen no matter what. I got the SD version of the Customized Nook Froyo to boot up but its very slow and stuff doesn't work. How do I get a ROM back on the eMMC? Some one suggested I get CWR and a ROM on the card and flash it via CWR off the card onto the eMMC. How exactly do I do this? I CANNOT get the winimage method to work no matter what I do and I don't know WHAT I'm doing wrong. Everytime I direct winimage to the place I've downloaded an image to, theres nothing there....
I thought I ALMOST had it a few minutes ago. I can get the CWR to come up and I flashed the flashable eMMC NF. I got my hopes up as it started to boot BUT OF COURSE NOT - went into a boot loop, constantly doing the N screen over and over. WTF.
I'm desperate here. I'm at the point where I'm willing to pay someone a small fee to help me get this sorted out. I'm going to keep on trying....
on win image, when you go to select the file. you must change the file types it see's to everything. that will let you see the .img file you downloaded.
We are talking about Win32disk imager right? It only gives the *img selection.

I've heard of an 8 boot reset. How does that work?
I'm reading the "Recovery" thread. Should I do the "repartiion" zip file? I'm starting to think that maybe the problem...
EDIT: Tried the Repartion.zip. No change. Still continously reboots.
I just tried the Nook restore file and it still gets hung up on a different N screen (the Nook symbol). What in the HECK! It wont' go into CWR anymore, says there isn't any room on the card. AN 8GB CARD!!!! I put the card back in the computer and it says its only 115MB! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE.
EDIT X2: LOOKS LIKE I GOT IT BACK TO STOCK. WHEW! Now I can start over! Tomorrow after I rest a bit. LOL

This will allow you to get the card back to showing 8gb:

Hi,
I found this post (in developers/cm7 users thread) very useful for installing
CM7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11535969&postcount=151
It is a little dated (weeks) but very detailed and should hopefully still all work fine.
Some more general information on:
http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor
I find that I never have enough uSD cards to use - so make sure that
you have several spare. The emmc Androids are still in general expecting
an external SD card for storing data such as ebooks etc. and CWM will
backup to the external cards too.
CM7 and Froyo use different disk format types for various partitions, don't know,
but that may be part of your problem?
Your PC won't normally read some of the linux partitions on the SD card
either - hence only 115MB showing. This is the boot partition, formatted with
FAT32 (a PC related format) In general you don't need to reformat this partition,
just update or change some of the files. (Some of the names of formats used include:
FAT32, EXT3 and EXT4)
CM7/17 and CM7/19 Have both been very stable and easy to use for me. I switched
to CM7 from Froyo 6.8 a week or so ago.
Good luck, the Color Nook is a fun device!
Peter
Thanks all I appreciate the help. I used some HP utility to take care of the cards, worked great.
Ok I've got a NF .68 up and running. Titanium backup worked beautifully. SetCPU is running it at 1.1 interactive..... HOWEVER!....
I flashed it with a another version of the CWM flashable .68 NF that I had previously. I tried to reflash the other version and it went to install then stated "Installation aborted". I tried twice and got the same thing. I guess its no big deal since their the same version just this one thats on there had some more tweaks hence the title "Customized".
My question is why did it do that? My guess I was supposed to format or clear the data/system/caches' in CWR. Is that right? If so, which ones precisly do I clear or format before flashing a new ROM? I'm starting to think thats' what happened when I tried to load CM7 (Yes I had CWR 3010) and go me all borked to begin with....
And if someone would like to answer a quick question. What this EXT4 stuff and how does it pertain to flashing ROMs? Thanks guys... Your advice got me back up and running!

Always format /system, /data, and /cache. Whatever you do DO NOT format /boot.
As to why you may have had an issue on trying the other ROM. My guess is it has to do with what version of CWR you had been using and wha twas on the device prior to flashing it. I've found if you make say a nandroid backup using 3.0.0.6 or earlier, and are currently using CWR 3.0.1.0 they don't mix well. And I think it has to do with the fact the older CWR version only supported ext3, and the newer one has ext3 and ext4 support. So once you install a ROM using CWR 3.0.1.0 that uses ext4, and then you try to go back to a ROM that is ext3 it just doens't work out like planned.
That all said I not longer flash CWR to eMMC, and I have a bootable sdcard running 3.0.1.0 with all my current and old backup files. Make life much much easier IMO seeing as you can always boot to an sdcard, and all backups are in the correct format and will Restore just fine.
Thanks for the info! I'm sure that will make trying to upgrade to CM7 actually work! LOL!
But first can someone explain to me what this EXT3/4 stuff is?
Different filesystems for Linux/Android. Wikipedia has pages for each if you want google them and get too much info
Too much info? No thanks! As you can see I can barely handle the info I'm getting now!
Hi All
I've posted this on the CM forums, but I thought I would get better help here
Link to the original post in the CM forums -> http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/22941-nandroid-backup-freezes-on-clockworkmod-never-completes/
So I was flashing the final version of Cyanogenmod (7.0.2.1) last week and I thought I'd back up my device before doing it - Since CWM3 always gave me an issue, I'm currently on Amon_RA 2.2.1 (I think that's the version)
Turns out, that Nandroid just freezes when it is backing up a file in sd-ext
It's called #10956 (yes, including the quotes)
Just struck an idea that I could just go to Root Explorer and delete that file (knowing the consequences could be catastrophic)
So I kick started Root Explorer and mounted my device as Read/Write
I went to /sd-ext/lost+found and I saw that the file #10956 was 3076.00 GB - Yes, that is GB - But the file could never be deleted
I'm assuming that the file is corrupt and that's causing my Nandroid backups to freeze and never complete.
Any way how I could get rid of this file? Ofcourse, I'll be going into Amon_RA recovery and performing a backup before deleting that file
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks!
[edit: I have a 8GB class 10 Transcend MicroSDHC. Amon_RA never failed a Nandroid backup for me. It's only Clockworkmod - I've tried the older versions of CWM, and the backup never finishes. I'm forced to use Amon_RA instead]
Note:
I've tried sticking the SDCard on my Windows 7 box, but since /sd-ext is a partition instead of a folder, I cannot even see that partition
I had partitioned my card with CWM3.x - This was way back when I was on CM7 RC1 or RC2. However after partitioning, Nandroid never froze, so I'm assuming that stuff went wrong sometime later
I understand that a lot of folks are having issues with CWM3.x and are using older versions or using Amon_RA - My question is how do I get rid of that file "#10956" from the /sd-ext/lost+found directory? Since I think deleting that file might cause some issues in the future, but atleast my Nandroid will finish

Either UFS explorer (not free, but works great) or
DiskInternals Linux Reader (free, but i've never used it http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/)
Either one of these should get you access to the EXT partition via your card reader/windows pc.
You could also just connect your phone to Linux PC, and mount USB - it'll also mount EXT partition to the Linux PC, and you'll be able to use Linux disk tools on it.
Connect your phone to a computer with linux, then you see both partitions when you mount. It's easy to get it running with a LiveUSB setup like this #2 here http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
The Window$ DiskInternals Ext2/3/4 trial could also be enough to let you delete the file.
When I first got my NC, I installed CM7 on an sd card.. quickly found out that it wasnt stable enough for me and I installed CM7 on emmc. I'm selling my nook to a friend and want to return it to stock with no CWM on it.
Before I installed CM7 on emmc I made a backup of my stock setup. Should I restore this backup or wipe everything and use the zip of 1.2 without CWM (this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720)?
I want to return the nook to how it was on the day I bought it when I first took it out of the box. Are there any other steps I have do to unregister it or anything? He wants to be able to purchase books through B&N with it and all that.
Thanks
The 1.2 .zip is probably simplest. It will definitely leave the NC de-registered without any extra steps.
So I guess I'll follow the guide for a clean 1.2 install. I will then be able to update to 1.3 correct?
Edit: Also, my nook is a blue dot, with the newer partitions. If that matters at all.
Hmm, I'm not sure how the 1.2 image will interact with the newer partitions--that thread you linked and the one with the 1.2 image are both pre-blue-dot, with no mention of how the new partitions interact with those methods. Your best bet may be to clear CWM off eMMC and do 8 failed boots, to be safe.
So instead of messing with the 1.2 zip, should I instead restore the clean stock backup that I made using CWM before I installed CM7 on emmc? If I read correctly, I can unregister the nook in the stock nook settings and then re-register it. I think. Basically I want to make take my personal information off of it and put his on.
I guess I don't HAVE to take off CWM, unless it will cause problems? The person I'm giving the nook to is not very computer literate and I don't want him to have any problems down the road.
My thinking is, if you restore from your back up image (presumably made via CWM on eMMC), it will not remove CWM. The 1.2 image from this thread might install just fine as long as your CWM is up to date (3.2.0.1), but I'm not 100% sure of it. Your safest bet may be to repartition first using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371
Unless, of course, someone can confirm that the 1.2 image works with blue-dot NCs. If your friend wants the 5GB /data instead of /media, there's another zip in the repartition thread you can use after you're back to stock.
ETA: the main problem CWM would cause is blocking future B&N updates.
ETA2: if you're a gambler, you could just try the 1.2 image (make sure you have CWM 3.2.0.1). If it won't boot, try 8 failed boots to restore. If it still won't boot, you'll need to make a CWM SD card and repartition anyway.
Just rebooted into recovery and my CWM version is 3.2.0.1. CWM has gotta go then, since I want him to be able to receive all future updates.
You could also just google around a little bit, there's a guide to repartition the NC back to pre-bluedot partitions.
It's pretty simple. I did it to mine prior to installing CM7.
Here's a guide: http://mrm3.net/nook-color-how-to-blue-dot-nook-color/
Also, from my understanding the newer partitions shouldn't affect any roms being loaded... including the stock one. They're all made to fit on the original 1gb partition, so they'll fit fine on the 5gb one.
Here's a similar thread to this though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125675
Success.
Didn't mess with any partitioning. Put the 1.2 zip without CWM on an sd card, booted into recovery, wiped /system and /data, installed the zip, wiped /cache and dalvik cache. Rebooted into stock 1.3 with zero problems. Downloaded the 1.3 update with zero problems. Loving it.
Thanks all!
