I have a evo now and i came from blackberry i was a theme developer for bb. but really dont know much about themes for android but i want to get into it. For blackberry they have theme builder and composer is there anything similar to these programs only for android? I had alot of themes on crackberry and app world so im not dumb just need a "get started kit for android" thanks alot in advance!
First off welcome to the android world. Its fun with android it allows you to create more and gives you freedom to edit just about every image. I came from BB to and wasn't able to get full control of the BB OS, like the keypads and other images. The android is fun at the same time confusing and frustrating. Especially when it comes to signing. But, now signing apps, which you will learn is a bit easier, at least for me.
Start off by downloading Avabox V2. its your signing program. Which is easier then others. There are others that does more but this is the most simpliest one that I use and like. There are; SDK, Eclipse, app manager, and some others. These take up lots of space and the instructions can get frustrating when you follow them and then to find out something else is missing. So follow them to the Tee.
Good luck and hope to see some of your work.
Thats great thank you for the introduction. I will download now and get to work! I can imagine it will be a bit tricky as you were saying thanks for the heads up. All info is really appreciated since im new to android. I've had it just over a month now and this thing is incredable I really didn't think I would like it this much.i really really love this phone!

I would say start downloading the following programs
AppManager, Adb (or Droid Explorer) .. theres also a lot of tutorials out there and numerous programs, theres a sticky thread somewhere were it explains themeing in detail.. enjoy your android
Ok I got some stuff downloaded I'm kind of confused def gonna need a tutorial. Thanks for the link!

I can't seem to find a master list of apk's. I'm not talking about just stock, I mean everything. Kind of like a big giant kitchen. Not a list of what should be there, but actual download links. I am thinking the community would benefit from going to a single place to say "hmm....I'd like to try a different email.apk today." Basically a self-service kitchen. I can't count how many times I have to go pull apart a ROM to strip out the keyboard I like to put on my new ROM.
I think this will help cut down on many questions like "where can I find the patched mms.apk......" questions I see all the time. One place.
There is something similar to this in the Vibrant forum, but thought a giant consortium for Galaxy S would be best. Maybe it's something I'd have to work on, but I'd love to have it added to the WIKI. Think about it, you go download your favorite ROM/kernel, whatever, then add some spices........and voila! a kitchen without the hassle of downloading an entire ROM because you want to change one little thing.
Am I crazy? Have I really missed something in all my searches? Am I suffering from Search Overload?
Guess its time to bring a dead thread back to life because I was thinking about this myself just the other day... or is there already one that I'm missing?
I can and will host files if needed I have space and bandwidth that's going to waste.

I wasn't thinking paid appear, but like different free ones that are already out there or apk's for different modified apps that you see on different roms as long as their creators are cool with it
Yes! That's my point. I'd love to have a list of modified stock apps I can scroll through. You know, like a list of all the available email apps (stock, aosp, gingerbread, themed, etc...)The wiki seems like a good place to post it cause then themers/chefs can post up links to their work.
I honestly started digging around last weekend trying to collect links through the forums, but my god is that a lot of work! However thee pay off would be HUGE for all of xda. I just wish I had more time to start it AND all themers/modders/chefs would have to use it! That's what I feel would be more difficult than anything. Trying to get everyone to keep updating it. especially considering many frame work apps are "cross-platform" if you will, meaning an email app from a Desire might work in my Captivate. I'd like to try anyways.
Who's up for helping me? If only I was unemployed i'd have the time.
P.S. This made me happy seeing that someone agrees with me. I thought I had gotten totally ignored.

Well there are these threads:
[REF] **Captivate MOD/Theme Directory**
has some of the mods listed on there, not much tho (like ROM specific modifications I've seen around)
APK Download
a list of stock APK's and some non stock
So I think starting with this and adding some others would be a good list, especially stickied
I tried posting this earlier but couldn't post links at the time but I ran across a GUI for Gladroot today. It doesn't look like it does much but makes the process even easier.
The GUI was found at http://www.android-advice.com/2011/gui-for-gladroot4-2/ ... I have been watching Android Advice for a while and it doesn't seem like they have great devs but they do seem to post some interesting stuff that other people come up with.
Kind of like a collection of only the mods and root threads here, android central, atrix froums etc.
Let me know if anyone tries the GUI, I am already on 4.1.83 and really don't feel like flashing back just to see if it works lol.
As per what they wrote, all it does is run the .bat files but it just has big large buttons to push. You still have to read the cmd windows. So if the bat files already work the gui should theoreticaly work aswell

Looks good. Nice post!
Ok we tried it on a friends phone and it works fine although it is what they say "just a GUI for the batch files you already have". I guess it could be useful for people that aren't tech savvy at all but for the community here its probably not that useful.
The Missing Rom, Sense 1, 2,3 are more than just HTC's UI. They are the way we Interact with our Incredible. As i write this There are Dev's and Dev teams making great strides on what they feel will be the greatest ROM. I have spent many years working on car project only to find that I am never happy with it. A good projects are never finished. With all the Sense rom's you get flavors of sense. With the senseless roms you get no Sense. With this rom you get some Sense and Launcher Pro. I have removed everything that doesn't work with Launcher Pro.
This is my first shot at a Rom, I plan to continue learning and devolving.
Sense widgets gone
Battery draining apps gone
Rom zip file is less than 110 MB
Sense clock and calander still there
camera works
If you want apps install them, the market is full.
Thanks to Jakresge, and every Dev. on this site.

I request to have this thread removed. No offense to the OP - but adding a different launcher and some other minor tweaks does not justify a ROM.

Give it a chance guys. What have all sense 1 roms done? Changed little from stock? Exactly.
Youre looking at a crackflashing troll with ORD
No offense either bud. Its just... well... how exactly did you create "your ROM" on your phone?
Did you do a nand and then expect people to flash your back-up?
I don't understand what your doing or why. Normally ROM development takes place on a computer with some knowledge of how things work in these ROMs so we can make them better. And to make them more appealing to the other users of these forums or whoever.
Simply installing Launcher Pro or whatever else does not meen you have created a ROM. You have just installed Launcher Pro to a ROM, that is all.
However, if you would like to get into "real" ROM development there are a many valuable tools and resources in theses very forums to help you get started. Not to mention the devs that roam around here as well that would more than likely be willing to pull you to the side and help you out, provided you just ask them.
I want you to pay attention to this next part ok? The name of this website is called xda- wait for it... wait for it... "DEVELOPERS" yup, xda-developers. Not xda-I installed launcher pro to some craptastic ROM and I expect people to actually use it.com
Until then friend, maybe you should try something else.
Done.

It's not just that but if you remove rosie, why not all HTC widgets, etc?
This is literally deleting one APK and pasting another in its place.

A little harsh but funny. Gotta give the guy props for having the balls to post it. I myself made many kitchen built ROMs for personal use and never dared post them. Appears to me that many of the custom ROMSs here are just kitchen builds so what one more?

Actually no. No offense bud but I don't think any of the seasoned devs on here use the kitchen to "build" a ROM. All the devs I work with manually port our ROMs peice by peice. Less error in the long run. The only reason I have ever used the kitchen is to deodex, zipalign and sign. I don't even hardly use it for that anymore. 9 times out of 10 the kitchen is not capable of doing the things that we do to our ROMs.
Never ment to crush dreams or whatever with my first response, I just think if we are going to do something that makes changes to or effects other peoples devices we should take the time and do it right.

Does that mean you didn't flash it? We all start somewhere. I did not mean to insult anyone. But there is a gap in the Rom selections. I like some of the sense apps that you lose when going senseless. I also don't like the button layout of sense. And the battery draining sense widgets. That is what I have done filled a hole

Good to know that your building your own ROMs. Its hard to tell from all thats posted who to trust as a dev and who's just a hack. No offense to the op. CaptainKrtek had a post in the Eris forum last year about what it takes to be a real dev here, wish I could find it again had some good info in it.
I will update my op I was more/less saying that I am new to this kinda thing and don't call myself a developer like a nurse doesn't call themselves Doctor, or a drafter doesn't call themselves an engineer.

If you really want to be a dev then start hanging out in chef central. The advice I had originally said came form captainkrtek actually was from cyanogen. I read it over a year ago when I was playing with dsixda's kitchen and thought of posting my own ROM. I posted a link below as I think its appropriate. Not sure why our dev section here isn't as nice as the Eris forum, they have a lot more info over there and being a former Eris owner I miss it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but creating a website for the Thunderbolt right now is like showing up late to a party with a 12 pack of Bud Light. Everyone will be happy you came, but you didn't bring anything that wasn't already there. Now, if you show up with a bottle of Single Barrel Jack Daniel's, you will be the shiznit at the party. So, if you can, please try to bring something different to your website. With that said, I'll be sure to keep checking on your site, it's always nice to have more people at the party.

To be honest, I love this idea. It's kind of hard to find updated roms and mods for any phone, not to mention the Thunderbolt. BeardedMan... Why is making a website like this, which will (hopefully) be a good hub for Thunderbolt mods and roms, getting "late to the party?" Is there another website out there like this, besides the android forms or Rom Manager? If there is, I'd like to know.
frankzua77, I would like to say thank you. If this website becomes what I think it will, it will make modding the Thunderbolt so much easier. If you need any help, just let me know.
I think the problem beardedman is referencing is the fact that there are a lot of android websites/forums already (even thunderbolt specific) and that there are a lot of much newer phones getting the attention. I have yet to not find anything I'm looking for without a 10 second search on Google. And the Thunderbolt is real close to being yesterday's superphone, if it's not already.
Plus, the problem with any of these sites is someone has to maintain it...which means sifting through posts, updating daily, etc. Unless it's a wiki that anyone can update, it's the same reason that the stickies all get outdated. Heck, it's the same reason I've started threads on many forums for many topics trying to compile information and eventually given up.
Now that I've rained on the parade and come off as a prick, I do applaud the effort...even if it doesn't stay updated or become the hub you imagine, at least you have an idea and a passion and are trying to do something about it. Don't lose that. And who knows...maybe it's just what the community needs

Users can submit a MOD, Downlad mods or whatever right from the web.
Still a WIP, but just needs attention.
Not knocking this idea at all, but should really consider opening it up to a wiki format and not center only on the thunderbolt.
!
I really appreciate everyone that makes their point, I am currently working on the page. One of my goals is to have videos that can show you a ROM even before you consider downloading it. I know we are focusing on the tbolt, who knows maybe later on this expands to having other phones and stuff...

I understand you can custom build your own rom with icons and and such catered to your liking. Is there a tutorial on how to do this? I have been trying to search for this on xda, google etc. but it looks like I either have to run a virtual machine with ubuntu or visual c++ with an android kitchen program. I haven't found any that work for the Revolution specifically, and to be honest i'm afraid to even mess with that stuff. I'll pay someone money to implement the changes i want? Or do some sort of remote connection and show me? I would like to know how, and maybe I can start devving for the revo.
I would go on the IRC and start talking to Devs there. A lot of us here just download and install not develop.
