Broken Power Button, Upgrade to 2.3.3? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a broken power button and am running stock 2.2.1 on my N1. Is it possible to upgrade to 2.3.3 "manually" in my case or do I have to wait for OTA ?

You need to go from 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 to 2.3.3. Search for the required file, I believe you need frg83D to frg83G. As for the broken power button, you need to root, then install quickboot or rom manager to go straight into recovery.

Sorry for the probably stupid question, but can we root with a broken power button?

No........

Then you'd probably have to wait for a one click root method of some sort.

There is no one click or manual root available for 2.3.3 yet...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

Updating to a build that has no trackball wake/unlock with a broken power button would probably be a big mistake anyhow.

excuse me, I have a rooted 2.2 Nexus one with a broken power button...
How can I upgrade my phone...?
Would you tell me the procedure step by step.........
Actually, I read so many posts in xda but I still so confused that how can I upgrade my phone without the power button...
Thank you so much~~

With the upgrade do you want to go back to stock unrooted or do you want to stay rooted. Also do you have a custom recovery installed.

You have to flash a stock captivate kernel, use the key combo, run the update package, then flash back to the JPH kernel again

won't that not work since it's a 2.2 build and we have no available kernels?
did Zilch finally make a mistake? AND I CAUGHT IT!?!?
okay i will try it
I was always under the assumption that with a 2.2 ROM, a 2.1 kernel won't boot (even to recovery, though I assume since it can get to download it can get to recovery now that I think about it) as long as you flash the JPH kernel back immediately after before you boot?
maybe I didn't catch Zilch making a mistake =(

Nope, I'm right =P
You have to use it to get the recovery so that you can use our key combos (and power as select), install the package, then flash back. The phone won't BOOT without the JPH kernel but it will get to recovery =P

the JPH kernel will be inside the flashable package. look for a file named zimage.tar
was meant to imply the kernel was in there, didn't think he wouldn't know what to do with it... zZzzzZzzzzZZZZzz

No no no, if he does that the zImage file won't be flashable, unless he's on a linux box and can repackage it.
Go to the I9000 forums and find one of the threads about rooting JPH, they have a handy zip that contains the JPH kernel and the update.zip for rooting

i did the captivate kernel then then i did the recovery to root and applied it. then i flash back the i9000 jhp kernel it wont make my selection to reboot and go in to the os.

I'm curious why it's going back into recovery again- just hook your phone up to your computer and go into your adb folder and type: adb reboot

I curious as to why people lately have been trying the i9000 jph? Yes, I would want 2.2 also but that thing is not made for these phones and with all the people lately having trouble, why bother? Just flash back to stock, use adb if buttons don't work, and load Eugene's captivate hybrid. It's fast, doesn't have the att/samsung bloat, and it works without bricking our phones.

Any idea will be very apprecited,
Thanks in advance,

[Q] How to root?

I'm surprised not to find a thread labeled. "How to root" so I have to post this up.
How do you root the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G?
Is there a quick, easy app?
there is a search function thatll answer your question and or google but here is some good reading for ya http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Exhibit_II_4G
Yeah I've been through the forums and youtube videos, I'm not quick to post up a thread, but I'm having no luck. Looking for the most recent method. I'm on 2.3.6 , Ive tried the Zerg Rush Root and SuperOneClick, neither worked, it install terminal emu but not superuser or busybox.

Yeah. From what I hear that link is quite awesome. And I'm not just saying that cuz I spent a lot of time one day updating and reorganizing everything (which it's nice to see other people have since kept it up).

My advice would be to flash ClockworkMod -> http://d-h.st/O36 through stock recovery (holding Vol+ and Power button) then flash a custom ROM with root.

You can Manually update, the files are are located here androidfilehost.com/?w=search&s=g900a&type=files, since you are on build OC4, the first update you want to do is G900A_OC4_tF2_OTA.zip, (located on page 2 of the link i gave you) after that you can then update to OF3, and then go from OF3 directly to PA1 which is the latest one.
to update rename it to update.zip, put it on the root of your external sd card. Then power off the phone and hold vol up+home+power until you see recovery in the corner, then let go of power and volume and keep holding home till you see the recovery menu. use volume down to choose update from sd card/external and power to select it then find the update.zip file and select it.
The update will factory reset your phone so backup everything you need.

Great write up, just to add a little bit. You don't actually need to rename the files. Just put the files on your SD card and select them one at a time. To get your phone updated to the latest, it will require several updates: OC4-to-OF2, OF2-to-OF3, and OF3-to-PA1.
