Clockwork Recovery vs Stock Recovery - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why is Clockwork Recovery better than stock? Is it simply because it will let you run any .zip from the sd?

Clockwork is modified to give several additional features, such as backup and restore, and installing zip files, deleting cache, etc

It also allows for installation of unsigned/unverified files that allows us to flash ROMs the way that we do.

[Q][Eclair] Rooted 1.1, clockwork backup failing :(

I am running rooted 1.1, and want to create a backup before I take the plunge on CM7. I reboot using Clockwork Recovery via ROM Manager, and access the backup menu.
This is what always happens:
Reboot into recovery
Choose Backup and Restore
Choose Backup
......
ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.1.0
SD Card space free: 949MB
Backing up boot...
Backing up system...
Can't mount /system!
I then go back out and choose 'Mounts and Storage' to try to manually mount the volumes. From here I can see that /cache and /sdcard is mounted, but I cannot mount /system or /data.
Any ideas??? I really want to back up my my stock unit before trying CM7...

1.1 functions with clockwork 3.0.0.5. I don't think you will get a backup with 3.0.1.0 because it writes to a different partition. You may need to burn 0.5 to an sd card or revert to 0.5 do your backup and then reload 1.0.

The oldest version I could find in ROM Manager was 3.0.0.6. I reverted to that version, but it did not work any better. Now when I tell it to reboot, it will only reboot back into recovery, I cannot get it to reboot back into Eclair. I never had a problem rebooting out of recovery mode on 3.0.1.0. What the heck is going on? I did make sure no SD cards were in during the reboots.
I did go download an offline copy of 3.0.0.5 to try from SD, but I need to get back into Eclair so I can update my Nook to use the older CWR via ADB...
Here's your answer!
Hey, I had this exact problem. Here is the solution:
1) Download the .zip update for ClockworkMod 3.0.1.0 and put it on your SD
2) Flash CWM from ROM Manager (NOT the "old" one, just the regular one)
3) Reboot to CWM
4) From CWM, install the .zip CWM update file
Reboot to android, then reboot to recovery (using ROM Manager or whatever other means you like, doesn't matter) and you'll be able to do a backup.
Hope this helps!

i found an sd bootable versionof CWM, it as 3.0.0.5, but said it was 1.1 compatable. I booted off SD, and this copy worked. I backed up, formatted, and flashed the new ROM. However, as soon as I removed the SD and rebooted, it took me right back to the CWM that is on my eMMC! What gives???
I still cannot reboot back into android

[Q] CWM cant install Cyanogen 7 - Am I missing something?

I have searched for a few hours and can't find anyone with a similar issue.
I have my 2.2 captivate rooted and unlocked with CWM and TB installed. Got the Cyanogen 7 zip install on my sd card.
Loaded CWM Recovery and backed up my rom.
Restarted and went to CWM to Install Rom from SDCard
It doesn't point to the SD card, however. It starts in the Internal storage, so i choose external_sd/ then the update file
it boots into recovery, formats the phone, but gives me the "No such File or Directory" message with the path set to SDCARD External SD Update.zip(Cyanogen install)
So it thinks my internal storage is my SD card?
So its pointing to the wrong directory, but i cant find an option anywhere to make it go through the right directory.... help?
sorry, mods please delete.
It is installable througn CWM,

Harder way:
Make sure you're running a Eclair/Froyo Firmware (2.1 or 2.2) and Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders!
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)

Try taking out your external sd before you flash, and if you have anymore problems post in the CM7 Q&A thread

[Q] Clockwork recovery sees different files than are actually on SD

Hi folks,
I am having a weird problem on my A855. When I boot into CWM recovery, I cant see the contents of my SD card. I see something totally different, something that looks like files from an old SD card. I've formatted the SD card and copied only the ZIPs that i want to use to update. When I boot to clockwork recovery I dont see them but some phantom files!
Strangely, if use the partitions menu and mount USB while in recovery, I see the correct files. Or, also while in recovery, if I adb shell, mount sdcard, list files, I also see what's actually on there.
I've already wiped boot, system, data, cache, reflashed CWM, but it still sees those old files. I've never seen this before and I've updated 6 or so different phones to Cyanogenmod.
I was able to adb push update.zip to /data/ and recovery --update_package=DATA:ROM.zip to get CM on the phone but it's a less than optimal solution.
On a related note, on my Sensation, when trying to update via ROM Manager I get a "file not found" error upon booting to recovery but at least there I can see the SD files and manually update.
Any info would be appreciated.

[Q] Installing crDroid

I am looking to install crDroid on a stock (24A) / rooted phone. I already have TWRP on it. but I cannot find the zips (rom and gapps) when I am in TWRP. My phone is encrypted, so that may be why I cannot find them on the emulated sdcard, but is there a place in the file system that I can place the zip so that I can wipe data/cache/dalvik and still be able to install the rom? Thanks for your help.

[Q] Cannot find zip file in recovery mood

Hi!
I have downloaded the zip file from xda. When i went into recovery mood i cleared the cache and data when i tried to install the zip from sd card.... the zip was not found.
Now when i try to switch on mobile it goes into recovery mood.
Any solution to it plz help...!!!!
Awaiting for your response....
It does help stating which phone you have, either the normal 5570 or 5570i, as both phones vary a lot under the shell.
I assume you are using stock ROM and kernel, as you appear to be new to this.
When you downloaded the zip file, did you download it directly into your phone? If so, then the file stays in /sdcard/download. As the stock recovery does not display all the folders in /sdcard, the download folder cannot be seen or accessed. Hence, as a guideline, shift all flashable zips to the root of your sdcard (/sdcard) to allow your recovery to access and flash these zip files.
However, I am not too sure why your phone is unable to boot as you have (apparently) only wiped data and cache.
