Some tile pictures for app logos are horrid - HD7 General

i was looking through the marketplace at apps and noticed that some of the pics and fonts used for the application logo are super ugly. The app logos from developers we know and love are solid but it looks like some of these others were just thrown together with no time, thought, creativity, or effort. This may sound petty on my part, but i refuse to load up my home screen with tiles that take away from the beauty of Metro UI.
"Pocket Money" and "Popular Tic Tac Toe" are some examples of half baked tiles.
Comments?

Most definitely, there are tons of ugly icons. Even some that were iPhone icons simply blown up to fit a WP7 tile (curved edges and all). Its pretty sad. Its definitely something I look at when I go through the Marketplace. Ugly icons are simply unforgivable seeing as its just an image.
Oh, and I see how some of the non-Xbox LIVE games use the same tile style as an Xbox LIVE game, and I think that is somewhat misleading. There should be some rule that does not allow non-conforming applications from using official Microsoft tile styles (such as non-Xbox LIVE games from using the same style/header tile as an Xbox LIVE game).

I know your 'pain'
I also used to filter by icons first, if they were ugly, no chance I would download it, exception being if I ran into something absolutely unique and useful, which is hardly the case since there are tons of apps for anything.
But you can take charge of the icons! Simply open WinRar and open the XAP with it and in there you will see the tile icons (1 for Pin and 1 for app list). Simply open them and edit them and you're done. A good place to look for WP7-type of icons is the NounProject (which I can't post the link to yet, so just search it)

I do agree with you guys as well
But you must remember wM7 is pretty new for most developers out there and most of the apps out there may be their first.
so coming by end of this year which should have decent apps and icons and stuff
I have found some pretty free apps that are super brilliant in UI and stuff

Well basically, if you sideload your app, meaning you downloaded it with one of the market apps to find here, you can change your icons on the go. The Xap file is not less than a zip file. Opening it with winzip or 7zip or others gives you than the opportunity to change the application icon. Of course, for paid apps coming from Marketplace, it's not possible.

I agree, titles pawning themselves off as Xbox live titles seems misleading and underhanded. MS needs to set some guidelines before we have 100,000 misleading games and ugly app logos.

I agree that developers are new to WP7, but some devs are getting it right. The OEM microsoft tile logos are not the greatest but they do look well thought out and don't take away from WP7's elegance. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't do what developers do in a million years, but if they want to make money they need to keep the logos and tiles as nice as the OS.

Right, and we're not really talking about the application code itself. Yes, that part is relatively new and such, but this is a simple image we're talking about. People have been making GIFs and JPEGs and PNGs for ages. There is just no excuse for a poorly made colored block.

lmao i dont think i ever paid that much attention to the way tiles look....ha i was looking to see what people were talking about but i don't see anything to "horrid"
i guess it's all subjective

Compiz for Android

I know it's purely cosmetics, but cosmetically speaking, if there was a version of compiz that could run on Android with all the settings... I'm thinking smooth rotating desktop cube with 4 virtual desktops vs the current 3-screen swipy desktop... or window animations, etc... with the same silky smooth animation that you get from compiz in ubuntu.... Just imagining this on Android... all the iPhone users jaws would drop open at the sight of a smooth spinning cube desktop and windows that burst into flames, etc.
So my question to the devs... I am not a developer... Is this dream of mine of a Android-Compiz app at all possible?
It's possible, but I've heard that there is NO hardware acceleration on the G1 at the moment. Everythings being rendered with software.
Also, Compiz wouldn't be worth the battery life. Yes, it's sexy, but remember that this is a phone. I wouldn't trade what little battery life we already have for that.

Umm you're wrong about hardware acceleration, it certainly does have it, just take a look at the demo app qualcomm made to show off the chipset. That said, it's a PHONE. If you can manage to get all the compiz effects working smoothly on a 528MHz single core computer with 192MB of RAM and a really crappy onboard graphics chip then sure, it'll work(i.e. no, this phone has nowhere near the processing power needed to have compiz working, hell it doesn't even have full OpenGL, it's OpenGL ES)

*sighs*
<The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.>
480 x 320 screen resolution helps with the prcoessing needs... and compiz is highly configurable... I'll bet if the app (or one inspired by compiz) could be made to run on Android, it would be a matter of adjusting the right modest settings...
People don't buy iPhones for the battery life, and they don't even buy iPhones for the phone. The phone is like the cherry on top. They buy iPhones for the pure eye candy bliss.
All I'm saying is... don't under estimate the value of eye candy in the consumer market, and if Android had a compiz like app it would kill the iPhone on eye candy.
I want windows transitions to explode into flames, or fade in and out, or spin out of sight (similar to the page 1/page 2 transition for the 'toggle settings' app)... I want the desktop to be a rotating cube with 4 to 6 virtual desktops that spins as fast as I can slide my finger across the screen and eventually come to a smooth stop.
Just saying... it would kill the iPhone. Kill it. And it would sell a lot of G1s.
Doesn't compiz require x-windows to work?

Exactly, I had the same question.
What is the android window environment? It's not an x-windows, is it?
Good question, I don't know... but even so, seems like there could be a way to do it.
Like the existing swipey desktop... if it could be made into a revolving cube with 4 sides. And then to add widgets to any of the 4 virtual desktops (in the same way that we have 3 virtual desktops now)
I ask this all from a very humble, non-developer position... Just wanted to plant the seed in case there were any developers who thought it might be possible.
Android runs on the framebuffer -- there is no X.
The hardware acceleration for graphics is being used (videos wouldn't play without it, for instance). Comparatively, it's probably something like an old TNT graphics card (but with hardware acceleration for h264 and such).
There's a tiny chance in hell it could pull off very basic compiz features... but it would hose the system... (and require that you run X -- which would require you installing your own software base separate from and without Android).
No one's going to put in the effort for methinks, especially when it would so cripple the phone.

My thoughts exactly. Another thing I thought of is that the vast majority of compiz effects have to do with windows and the G1 doesn't really have separate windows so I don't see how it would work. Desktop Cube might be possible and maybe some fancier animation for bringing up programs but aside from that, I don't even see what compiz effects would be applicable.
I think Cube Desktop (with rotation speed determined by how fast your finger slides across the screen) and windows transitions (burn, spin, flip, fade, slide etc) would be a great place to start!
Well since android is OPEN SOURCE we could create a compiz for android using the window management libraries that we will also need to create and build this ontop of cyanogenmod
The cube animation is offered in rogros82's home replacement on the market called GDE, I'M CURRENTLY USING IT, the best home replacement app to date!
Have to agree there aren't many of the compiz effects that would apply to the Android world. Cube/Sphere desktop & window animations are really about it. As far as that goes GDE (launcher replacement) does most of what makes sense to adopt from compiz. I have been using it for about a week & it uses 2% battery on average. The application dock it comes with is nice too.
If someone wanted to look into making their own compiz-like effects, You could start by digging around OMS code to see how they got cube and all working. Like I said though most of it has been done already, and is just a few bucks on the market.

You beat me to it. GDE is a great app though. Being able to switch themes easily is also a nice feature.
GDE running now looks great.!
eats my battery i think but nice 2 have
Well I know the Samsung Behold 2 has an inside cube animation effect with it's home/launcher but I wouldn't know how to pull it from the SB2 and port it to the Dream.
That's just an idea for the devs...
GO Launcher EX
GO Launcher EX has the cube animations built in it's effects for home screen and app drawer.. It works well
So does ADW EX.
Great way to bring a thread back from the grave...

The ZTE Avid N9120 has this cube. As you add apps, the cube expands the total number of sides it has .
Metropcs offers this phone via best buy and other sources.. worth every penny.
You can extract the cube to a desktop and add it to every phone on earth.
How Awesome Would This Be?!
Compiz on the Galaxy Note 3 or 4 and the Galaxy Edge!? With some special effects that run down the edge of the Edge. That would be fantastic! I personally love cosmetic stuff. Themes, status bar mods from xuimod, or Wanam Exposed. Now if someone could rebuild compiz with burn and cube and wave and wobbly windows! Let me just include one more exclamation point to express my enthusiasm!

Redesigned android music player, at last!

Hey fellas, I am a graphic designer and owner of a g1 since day one. I love the device and most of it. But I think they've done a horrible job with the UI design on the Music Player. It just sucks, and I've tried the others on the market, but they are just so TACKY!
I have been wanting to redesign the UI for a while but I'm not a programmer, neither do I have time to learn it. As a graphic designer, what I can do is design the UI.
I would like for someone to help me either create a new skin for the android music player, or create a music player from scratch.
Here is a link to something I've come up with, very clean and modern. http://www.snapdrive.net/files/145643/herow-newmedia.jpg
If there are any talented programmers interested please hit me up.
Here is the design in black. (thanks for the idea, Iridox!). http://www.snapdrive.net/files/145643/htc-hero-72.jpg
UPDATED UI
I'M ABOUT TO SWITCH TO THE IPHONE, LETS GET SOME TALENTED PROGRAMMERS INTERESTED.
That looks neat. Maybe do another mockup with black background & white text and make the scroll bar green instead to match the Hero colors
Really nice concept, I like your style.
I think, for the moment, it's easier to make a skin for androiod music player, but icons must fit in the position, color of the font and blabla bla....if you want I can send you the original images, then you can redisign and I can change them back inside of the player. (until somebody here offer you to create a complete new player).

This would need some xml edits to the stock Android music player.. look into the source. =)
yeah thats what i was thinking, doing some work on some custom animations anyways, so figure that i will look into this at the same time.
If you do so will you add a back button to the music player. Like the widget. It sucks because I love having themed stuff but I'm forced to use tunewiki seeing as how it has a back button on the widget. I'm all for a change to the player as well. G'luck mate!
not sure im stilled enough as a coder to add buttons, layout xmls are one things, but new buttons are a completely different story.
ill look at the code when im changing thens tho, and let you know what goes down.
looks amazing. I love the white UI! It will look amazing on a black phone
Yeah.... the topic title is incredibly misleading.
That said, if you guys could redesign the music player, that would be amazing. I don't like the market alternatives, so a redesigned player would be up my alley.
Good luck!
I'm willing to give this a shot.. I already downloaded the source.
i too am getting there i think, have edited the source, and its looking kool.
probibly not have much to show till after xmas tho, as other commitments etc, (pesky family)
If the original poster could post (or PM) the modified resources that would be great, otherwise I'll have to copy/paste/re-format them from the attached mockups

As I mentioned before, this post is to get programmers onboard with the project so that we can work together. If any programmers are interested in making this happen just send direct message. The design is not finalized, but once I get solid details of what can and cannot be done and I can rework or tweak, then procced to design the other sections of the music player as it is a complete redesign and not just the main menu. So if you are interested in making it happen just send me a direct message. Thank you all for your interest.
Check your PM! I'm heading home now.
I definitely love the black mockup man, awesome concept.
If this came to Android, it would go a long way toward beautifying the OS.

It's known that Seesmic isn't working fluidly at the moment - hoping for an update on that.
As for twitter, it's occassionally jerky, but a fair few seem to be. I'm hoping this is a case of 1.0 of the apps we're seeing and 1.1 is going to show some better optimization and some LIVE tiles.
And god damn it, I actually want to see vector-like tiles which match the metro theme or if not vector, at least fit in with the phone style. at the moment, some of them are terrible. Even if it's the bird tweeting on the twitter tile or something...
oh, and they need to be transparent so if I have a red theme, the tile matches......seems all tiles being made are for the default blue!

It looks like quite a few of the developers don't even have a WP7 device yet, or only recently got one, so most of their testing has been in the emulator and not on a real device. As more handsets become generally available I think we'll see better performance.
And yeah I wish they would be consistent with their tile design! Folks, this is not an iPhone, we have a design scheme here called Metro!
Watching the Twitter app demo on PDC10 tonight and they are using a Samsung Focus. It shows none of the jerky scrolling on the HD7. Maybe this is a device issue ?

While I agree especially considering there IS an iPhone theme. Apple fanboys (well any "fanboy") are no better and IMO more often worse. There is a fanboy for just about everything. The problem is they usually are wrong and regurgitate bad info
Personally I feel apple gets a reputation for innovation by simply taking something that already exists polishing it up to look nice and locking it down so it runs smooth. Then they sucker everyone in with the next version that has features the original should have had and other manufacturers already have.
At least when it comes to the mobile devices
Sure they are good and often better than others. But far from the best and not innovative

It's extremely annoying when some people say this. Just buying an iPhone may not be an option if you're not in a position to do so (I wanted an iPhone but could not use AT&T due to contractual obligations with Sprint). Answer the question or move on if you can't. Some people enjoy Apple's aesthetics--deal with it!
That said--I'll reiterate what others have posted--try the MIUI rom, it's reminiscent of an iPhone's interface. Another thing you can do is to download iPhone screen shots and get some widgets that match the clock and some of the icons and wallpaper, it's going to take some work though. The iPhone's icons are out there, I've seen them but never downloaded them. Use something like Launcher PRO or ADW to replace icons. Download the iPhone sounds from the market--I have those.
The wonderful thing about Android is it's dynamic and flexible interface capabilities. You can essentially make your phone look like any cell phone interface you like, WinMO, iOS, Blackberry, etc... Ejoy this device!

Definitely. If there's one thing that I'd like to see more of on the Market, it's more "alternative" launchers like this. Launcher Pro, ADW, Go, etc. all have their differences, but they're more or less the same in that they're all plays off of the whole multiple homescreen and a dock thing. It's nice to see new ideas out there. I remember a while back there was a launcher that showed all of your texts, email, facebook notifications, etc. in kind of an agenda view. It never really took off, but it's good to see devs think outside the box about the homescreen.

without using custom images those 2x1 and 1x1 tiles (and the headphone/camera images) are all there is. I'm not going to spend anytime importing images because I like my android phone as an android phone and it wont get any use anyway. I was basically showing how the UI looks unmolested.
