Did you ever read the sticky thread?
Closed.
this is just basically just to see if you can remember how you got into the hacking world, and it'd be nice to know the device that started you off too! =)
well i got into this with my first smartphone, the tmobile shadow. i was perfectally fine with they way it was untill my sister told me about a website (allshadow.com and xda ) where i could do alot with it! so i checked it out, and with due time i enjoyed it, and eventually grew out of it and moved on with the touch pro 2 and actually started using XDA from then out
Sony PSP custom firmware scene, then got HTC Kaiser, then Touch Pro 2, now HD2. Before the psp stuff, I was modding my XP comp and my guitar, amps, and effect pedals.
Gotten kinda bored with it all lately tho, used to be that if it had current passing thru it, I found a way to make it run linux. I haven't gotten on a pc in 2 months and dont even miss it. My phone is all the more internet I need or have time for anymore, and it's as modded/hacked as its gonna get.

I got into hacking phones when I got my moto V710 (on verizon) and I realized they had disabled side loading .mp3 ringtones. Every knows the class action lawsuit they had because they advertised that as a feature. I started seem editing then flashing different firmwares and it all snowballed into full on modding whatever I can get my hands on.
I started with a ipod touch 2g and jailbroke it. Then got the 3g then 4g... Then I got this... knew about root because I dual boot linux windows, I thought if this was linux it was rootable, started there

I got bored... So I googled things to do with a HTC Hero.... Found theunlockr then got pointed to xda.... Found out someone had stolen my username but I tried the username with my normal password and it worked
My first smartphone was the vogue and i enjoyed it how it was and knew about xda very little and found a way to stream radio and xm radio on here and havent visited it since 2008.
i then got a tp2 and actually was fine with it until i heard about wm 6.5 was out on custom clean roms so i finally got up the courage and time to read on how to unlock and flash roms.
i was addictted to mighty roms over at ppcgeeks and loved the taskbar mods and all the fun stuff such as getting rid of crapware that sprint put on it and made it better and had 6.5.5 a few months later and enjoyed it til i heard the first fast android phone with keyboard came to sprint and had all the hardware specs on it : The Epic 4g, unlock htc phones it didnt leave any feutures out of it and im loving it 7 months later.
i read up on rooting and rooted and started flashing roms and mods and been even more happy, this phone can do it all.
I also have a jailbroken ipod touch,
So it all started with my tp2 getting irritating waiting for sprint to deliver an update to 6.5 and the ugly colors on the interface of sense
It started with my old and grey (it's actually black) HTC Touch back in 2006 and a part of me just can't be satisfied with a stock product. No can do babydoll, no can dosville.
well i had a piece of crap sidekick lx and my cousin had a g1 rooted and i saw the true possibility of a phone so i bought a white g1 and he helped me hack it and get started now im rocking a mytouch 4g with CM7
haha, some great stories so far!
its funny how seeing little things go a long way to opening doors for you to do more!
also cause of my TP2 i ended up getting 3 friends get a TP2 cause they were blown by the awesomeness that it is! lol
Started with my linux based moto ROKR E8. What a pos that phone was, but i loved it. I made it do anything my friends iphone could do, basicly turning it into a monster that used wayyy to much power. Then i got a motorola defy. Flashed some of Higgsy and HandlerExploits roms. That wasnt enough for me though. I tried updating to 2.2 and kept getting stat. 7 error. Then i ended up here. Htc droid incredible, stock rooted. Not really feelin anything in the dev section over there. Maybe ruby if we dont get a 2.3 update soon. But ya, im still learning.

Well, I first started off by hacking with psp custom firmware then I moved onto game hacking such as COD/Battlefield. As soon as I got my X8 I went to the internet to find out how to get Android 2.2 on it, google lead me here now I have a Xperia Play and HTC Desire S but my only interest is to hack my X8.
I started hacking when I was like 6 and I hacked AOL for free internet then I moved on to learning some C++ at 11 and then I started hacking my Motorola Q. Started Android with the Nexus One after seeing how open Android was (ex-iPhone user)
I started patching with Siemens Mobile in year 2005, next Sony Ericsson K750i, Nokia and now SGS.
Hi everyone I'm just wondering if there are some of you who are still happy with your hd7 and wp7 in general. I had an hd7 before the nodo update and ended up trading for a mt4g. For the short time I loved the phone but it was lacking some features I was used to. Ive been using android since the g1 and pretty much have had all android phones on T-Mobile. I guess I'm getting a little bored with android and I'm thinking about going back to wp7. Should I go ahead and pick up an hd7 or should I wait until mango is out?
Also did nodo really make that much of a difference?

Hi dnguyen1988,
I have a HD7 and am very happy with it, the performance of the handset and the O/S are slick as hell and the Mango Beta i have on it is a massive improvement to the already worthy (in my opinion) daily driver.
However i can tell you that as soon as Nokia release their WP7 (Sea Ray?) handset i will be selling the HD7 and grabbing one of those with both hands. Carl zeiss optics and decent speakers/volume are what they are going to bring to the table, maybe more but just the better camera and speakers will be enough for me.
So in short my opinion would be to wait and see what they release withy official Mango.
Hope this helps,
Creamy
Thanks I think that's what I'm going to do I've always heard good things about Nokia hardware so hopefully the searay will be awesome. Do u know what kind of display it'll use?

With the latest firmware/radio update from HTC combined with Mango 7712 this thing is like a new Phone. I'm quite happy with it and look forward to the official Mango update.
I'm happy with mine except my phone is too sensitive if i touch at the back cover especially at the bottom part it always vibrate and goes to Bing.Sent for repair and was told that the mobo have a problem so they change it to new one.But it still happens once in awhile.I think it's not the mobo it's a bug from the wp7.
I still love my HD7. It has only gotten better over time. With Mango 7712, it's almost perfect.
USB Storage and tethering were my two biggest gripes. USB Storage was fixed using USB Storage Enabler (not full-fledged USB Storage mode but good enough for transporting files). Tethering was there with DFRouter until Mango disabled it. Sucks but not a deal breaker for me.
I liked Android too but will never go back after using my HD7 for 8 months or so. WP7 has everything Android does, it just does it better.
i have an HD7, however i've not upgraded to mange beta yet, which brings a lot things to WP.
i think without mango, android is far far better than WP7,
all you got with WP7 is a nice user interface, which android has a theme exactly like that and you could simulate WP7 even with android.
regards
Must Say Mango is brilliant on the HD7 its like a new phone.......
I am waiting for the official release of MANGO as the BEta is just brilliant.
But I would suggest you wait for the Nokia Phones, I am definately grabbing one cause nokia does the best hardware.
and Mango will rock for sure

Hi, I found that my Android device did not sync calendar and contacts properly with OUTLOOK on my notebook, which I need professionally. Additionally I could not import my EXCEL and POWERPOINT data. So, I purchased an WP7 device in strong belief that this would solve my problems. But alas, WP7 has a sexy UI but is such a weak OS (including the rudimentary Office package), missing manifold capabilities. Now I am completely disappointed. I cannot understand, how anyone can design a smartphone which falls far back the features of Win Mobile ? Though he sounds much more enthusiastic, I recommend to read Peter Bright's review on the website of arstechnica. Android at least offers a huge bundle of apps, which can help to find a reasonable solution to most (but not all) problems. In comparison Microsoft's marketplace seems to be a kindergarten with mostly toys and few serious apps.
Anyone who now uses a WIN Mobile device for professional reasons shall be extremely cautious before purchasing a WP7 device: it is not comparable at all.
My HD7 is currently on the sidelines waiting for the Mango update. I have a HTC Sensation that is pulling daily duty right now. I'm excited for the new release on WP7. This is the first phone I distort sell when it was time to get a new one. My Sensation better enjoy its time in the spotlight as it will have to move aside when I go back to WP7.
My single-core Snapdragon Windows Phone runs just as smooth, if not more, as my dual-core 1.5ghz Sensation. WP7 is great.

I'm on my third HD7 since January.
They aren't very rugged, but look pretty.
I like the large display, but don't like to try reaching acrossed it with my thumb when doing other activities.
Ive had a number of issues, Screen sensitivy, Call completion, and Blue Tooth failures.
I'm in the process of moving to a new phone again...with four email accounts and calendars, it is a realy PITA event.
I know a ton of people who own WP7s and most like the Samsung on ATT best.
Loving my HD7 even more with the offical Mango release.

THIS IS GROUND ZERO for me. LG released a phone with one of the best hardware setups i have seen on any phone, especially with the dual ram dual channel memory. those 2 things coupled with the dual core processor, make this phone incredibly smooth. i am currently running Thriller on it, and though the Dev for said rom bailed out on us, i still have hope that this phone will continue to improve, and those of us who see the true potential of this device, will continue to have faith, and work with each other to make improvements.
personally, i'm wanting to start development using the ICS SDK and hopefully port a great version of the software onto this phone. i know it's ambitious, and i know it would take a long time, BUT, this is something that i want to do, to learn the skills of rom building, and possibly make a career out of it (i dunno, get on at Google as a Dev there or something?)
i know that to port ICS onto this device, i'm going to have to write drivers for the rom from scratch, and as i have no prior knowledge of how to do that, it may take a while, but seeing as it all runs of the same base kernal as Linux, as well as MacOS X, those who actually do have knowledge of how to do this, could be a great help. if anyone is interested in helping me in this journey, PM me. "There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" well, i say WHY NOT?!?! if there's a will, there's a way, right? who knows, maybe we'll get ICS ported before LG even announces that they're gonna be upgrading to it (newer-as of 2011 dunno exactly when-google polocies state that any phone launched with an android OS are required to update to the newest OS within 18 months of launch)? now wouldn't that be a smack in the face to LG? a bunch of unpatient people who were unwilling to wait for their bloody port to a new version of software, banding to gether to make it happen before they can. PM me if you're with me. i'll give personal, private contact information to anyone who sounds at least as serious as i do about this.- IrishPunk

Use the search function on how to build roms and yeah we do have plenty of devs in here.
Agreed, when I saw gtg was gone it was like a balloon deflated. DG is gone too. We may never get fully functional CWM, and doubtful the O3D ROMs will port fully.
Guess its good I still have a few days to swap for the SGS II.
I guess I will have to take my humble pie as I do. I never thought I would take the Thrill back, I chose the Thrill knowing the SGS II was right there. But, I don't want to kick myself in a month when that window is done, and the used price of the Thrill has already tanked.

Everyone is bailing too early. I mean this Will get GB it's just a matter of time and patience which seems to be lacking with a Lot of people who bought this phone. Regardless though I assume building a Rom will be easier once GB get's rolled out although I could be wrong.
Patience will pay off in the end. If for nothing else, than to fix the battery life which seems to be what's running everyone off. I had the horrible Dell Streak when we waited for like a year for Froyo. If I can do that, I can wait on GB.

yup yup
I learned alot about this stuff messing with my inspire.. when i heard about the thrill coming out i was like "finally theres something like the evo 3d for att" it was a no brainer when my upgrade came a few days ago.
I did tell myself that i would give the phone a week to wow me.. or id be exchanging it for a SGS2.. however.. every day i read these forums, and the O3D forums and im constantly being amazed.. ive found an excelent rom and have almost worked out all the mms, 4g issues from using a O3D rom..
everyday im just a little closer to friday and the trade back.. but every day im amazed just a little more.. id love to learn the rom building process but i frankly do not have time.. every dev. ive ever dealt with has been more than courteous as long as i did make an attempt to look into the issue on my own first.. im excitedly awating CM7 for this phone and its almost there.. all i need now is an OC kernel to crank up this 1ghz dual core and ive got my daily user for the next 2 years..
I eagerly log in each day looking for what new tidbit is up and running.. i love being on the ground floor when everyone is bailing... the same happened for a couple of weeks with the inspire if you remember.. it was a pain to root.. but those that stuck in there found the wait to be worth it.. the same will happen with the Thrill.. im sure of it..
just hang in there guys and thank you to all the devs that are more knowledgeable than me. your work IS greatly appreciated.. your all my heroes..
Thanks again.. I think im in it for the long haul with the Thrill..
I started out using ROMs on the Streak, but have never tried to build one until now. Have you ever tried searching the forums for Android ROM building? Yeah good luck with that. I've even tried just googling Android froyo ROM creation, most of what comes up is for HTC.

Of course I've already got adb and the android sdk, I just need to know what I need to go with it.
Well you will need linux but here on the forums you can find something called Android Utility. Pretty much comes with everything you need to make roms, edit apks even some boot.img tools. For windows i have no clue, I do everything in linux. Good luck.

Mod Edit: Moved to Off Topic
Yay another crazy thread from Shadow_Android!
So how the title says what brought you to xda?
I'll start!
So one day while i was using my xperia mini pro it got really slow and hot i got mad and the phone suddenly rebooted
From that day and on it would happen like 3 times a day, it got really frustrated
At that time i didn't know about root and custom roms
After a few weeks i went to a party a my grandma's house, my cousin that know a lot about hacking asked me if i had my phone rooted and i was like "what the hell is that?" so we went upstairs to his room where he had his laptop and everything else
After a few minutes he got my phone rooted and he told me all the cool things i could do with it
the same day at my house i started looking for apps that needed root i came across some really cool apps with cool features like being able to change the font of the phone and the bootanimation and to be able to eliminate all the bloatware
I was really happy with my rooted xperia mini pro but the reboot problem was still there
my cousin had also told me about roms and all that crap but at that time i didnt pay much attention so in my search for making my phone faster i came across this site
I was really amazed of all the new features the custom roms had so i decided to try them out!
From there and on it was all about flashing roms and staying updated in the rom i used which was cyanocomb (really good rom)
After flashing my first rom i made an account so i could post my opinions and suggestions about the roms
After 7 months of using my xperia mini pro i sold it and bought a brand new g2 unlocked
That was my story know its your turn!
I started off on ppcgeeks forums back in the winmo days, cooking roms etc. I then made my way to xdandroid, then finally purchased a sony x10, joined xda in hopes of rooting it, sold the x10 and bought a stock DZ after reading I could sim unlock it myself! Haven't looked back since. Love xda, and love the development that goes on.

Bought my G2 because at the time it was the best phone and had a keyboard. Knew about root and all that with my computer tech background but needed a reliable forum to get answers to harder questions. read for a few weeks actually before I joined and posted and tried helping ever since
For me it started with my first smartphone, the Sony Ericsson X2 (looks very nice, but the software... oh god) anyways, yeah just searched random stuff on Google on how to improve it, because this phone was terribly slow and had so many problems and one of the links just brought me XDA,
For me it was being on a G1 and wondering how to tweak it. A google search led me to a youtube video about Super D rom and within that video was a link to XDA. Ah the memories.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App.
I came here for the first time trying to put Android on my old T-Mobile Wing. Now that I have an Android phone, I come here all the time.
I originally bought a G1 and was fine with it for a while. At the time I wasn't very tech savvy, although I had built a computer, and had no idea you can mod it. I started reading Android blogs and started seeing these posts about rooting the G1 and doing all sorrts of mods on it. I soon found out my soon-to-be-brother-in-law, who was way more savvy, had a G1and had rooted his phone. So I asked him to root mine and he installed CM3.x, which was Cupcake based and was done by cyanogen himself as this was before the CM explosion, and showed me the XDA thread. From then I was hooked.
Edit: @G1ForFun, I remember using SuperD! That was a badass ROM with the memory hack!
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
For me it was simply to see what i could do with my G1, tweaks and all that good stuff, I simply love to hack my phones, I dont post much i mostly read because my questions are always answered before i even ask .. this place is awesome man.. now I have G2 and im learning "ADB" and its a breeze.. these Devs are amazing and the community is so helpful.. My home away from home
Like some of the others I got a G1 and then found out that XDA was the place where everyone was tweaking it. Started with android 1.0 and enjoyed the build up to cupcake etc. First onscreen keyboard. Getting the video camera to work. Getting first multi-touch. Then getting Sense on the G1. I was addicted. Now with the Vision the scene is so fragmented with so many different android models. But I still try to keep up with what is happening. Can't wait for the attempt to get ICS on our handsets.

I came here when I first had my now retired HTC Hero (GSM version) and was looking to get some extra performance out of it. As I am still doing now with my DZ, that meant installing some Sense-free ROM.
I first came to xda after trying to find some programs for my HTC diamond, and from when i came to the site i found all the customroms i could get. I had my HTC diamond for 2 years (still running android). But last year i found out that i needed a Android phone, with a physical keyboard. So i got the Desire Z, and its the best phone i've ever had.
First time login to xda bcoz i want to root my DZ. Got all the information & successfully root my DZ.

I first came to xda when Cupcake was leaked (maybe ported from mytouch?) for the G1.
I actually rooted my phone solely for the virtual keyboard and the multitouch hack way back when you had to telnet into your phone to root. "wtf is telnet?!" I ended up figuring it out, and the Android community is now one of the best communities that I've ever been a part of.
The G1 days were awesome btw, when we had everyone working on a single device.. JesusFreke, Cyanogen, TheDude, haykuro, etc.
