[Q] need help with my z4 rooted cdma hero - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im a noob to this. I've been searching the forums and can't find the what I'm looking for. i have a cdma hero and I've rooted using Z4. my question is it possible to flash roms and kernals using Z4. if possible i would like to have Live wallpapers on my phone and looking into Froyo or Gingerbread that are the most stable for daily use, and the steps in doing so. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks

I'll tell you right now, lwp's don't work very well on the hero. There are a few that do, but imho, not worth the battery drain. Still, it's your baby, do as you wish. You can find them in the market.
As for roms, froyo builds are a little bit more stable, as there has been more time spent tweaking them. With that said, I have no issues with cm7 #7, other than reduced camera quality. That is an easy fix by downloading a camera from the market, though, do no big deal for me. I just hope you don't want a sense build, as froyo sense is still lacking and there are no gingerbread builds.

On the CM7 #7 is it possible run LWPs? @ this point I really don't care if it does or doesn't.My main concern is bricking my phone, have u heard any one using Z4 to use custom roms and if u have what was the process in doing so with Z4. All the info i have in installing custom roms are for other methods of Root, or should i just dump Z4 and go with another Root. I really appreciate the help..

From what I've heard, z4 works fine, just not sure if it flashes a custom recovery (necessary). Personally, I prefer to root via the learning method which would use Regaw's tutorial (in the dev forum, I would link, but I'm on my phone), it'll start you on the process to learning the things you need to know anyway. As for bricking your phone, the only way you're gonna do that is if you flash a GSM radio to your phone. Best advice I can give you is to read, read, read. When I first rooted, the DarchDroid 2.8(thanks Darch!) thread was about 400 posts and I refused to root until I read it all and I was confident that I knew what I was doing, and what to expect when it was done.
XDA is a great community, and we will all help you in your endeavor, but you will benefit the most by trying to help yourself. Good luck and have fun.

AFAIK, z4 does not flash a recovery. You would need to get one from somewhere. Either Amon-RA, which I use, or ClockworkMod. The only way I can think of to actually brick your hero is to flash a gsm radio. As an aside, z4 does nothing other than root your device, so no, you cannot flash roms with it.

Unless Something was Changed in the past few months, z4root ONLY ROOTS YOUR PHONE.... But it Does Work Well, I've Used it on about 4-5 Different Phones!!
But if I can I Recommend Using ROM Manager for your Custom Recovery, Especially since you Said Your New to the Root Stuff!!
Good Luck!!

Thanks! I'll keep you all posted how it goes.If you all don't hear from me in several days (5 days max) something whent wrong since I use my phone to access the internet from my Laptop. Thanks again!

Thanks for the help. I just got around to flashing the new rom yesterday. I've been really busy working, but i noticed my Google Maps GPS is not working properly. It tells me the directions but can't see the map, any idea how to fix....

DO A NANDROID BACKUP IN YOUR RECOVERY MODE(HOLD VOLUME DOWN THEN POWER BUTTON WHILE PHONE IS OFF)
I also have a hero running cm7 no problems, if you want to do everything really easy just download ROM manager from the market. With this flash a recovery image, then go toa website with some custom roms (google android candy and you'll find a few good ones) once you've downloaded the rom of your choosing, go back into ROM manager and select "install ROM from sd card" WIPE DATA! BACKUP CURRENT ROM!
It'll take about twenty minutes to boot the first time, have patience

cyanogen mod

Im very new to rooting and rom switching so please go easy
I just tried the cyanogen mod 6 for my nexus 1 and i have a few questions about it.
First, i cant really see anything new accept a few things in the cyanogen menu under "settings". Second, i cant see a speed increase either. Stock is actually working faster!
After all the amazing stuff i keep hearing about cyanogen, i just wanna know, what is it about this one (cm6) that im missing??? I just wanna appreciate it like everyone else
I have no clue.. i went back to Geo411m's ROM..
Personally i want a ROM that is more closer to stock as possible, and i really have no need for certain tweaks really. I used the 5.0.8 N1 quite abit before i went over to Froyo. It was allright for me but later on i really like stock based ROM's.
i agree. its seems as though the stock roms work best with froyo (for now anyway) i have been using a rom called "frf_blackbar_v3_signed" and its working great.
Since im new to this stuff (coming from an iphone!) i just figured i was missing out on something right under my eyes! I know its a new rom and it will get better too.
Have faith and give CM some time
They've been working on it for two weeks and its only their first official froyo release(RC1). Im sure things will pick up and get more exciting soon.
I also tested the performance of stock vs cm, and they didn't differ by that much...
Cyanogen has tons of additional features. What I recommended you do is look at his changelog.
He has listed all the new goodies.
Personally I like the kernal which allows overclocking, the music app which has support for flac right out the box, and the renderer which switches the screen color to save you battery.
I will pay attention to Cyanogen ROM for sure..
yea il be keeping an eye on it as well. Can i ask...
What is a kernel?
What is a online kitchen?
why do we have to flash different radios? (do they mean TMO and AT&T radios?)

Exact same here. Went from CM6 to Geo411m's ROM yesterday. Its fast, I know what I have, and battery life is good. Tried LeoFroYo this morning but there was just too much there for what I need. A quick Nandroid restore to Geo411m and that's where I'm staying for now

kernel is the guts of your system
online kitchen is where users can create their own roms
new radios add new features that some roms depend on
i don't recommend you messing with any of these things until you do a lot of reading
from what i understand the only way to truly screw up is if i DONT do a nandroid backup. If i do a nandroid backup once when i just rooted and unlocked the bootloader do i still have to do them every time i wanna put on a new rom to fully ensure that i dont brick or badly screw up my phone?
not necesarily, i nandroid before i do any mods to my system just in case i trash it i can boot it right back up just like it was 5 mins prior
If you truly brick your phone, you won't be able to boot into recovery to restore. You do a nandroid once you have your rom setup the way you want, so when you restore you go back to that point. Cyanogen is one of the best, if not the best. The man went through it with Google, just to bless us with his gift, show some RESPECT!!!!! I just flashed his latest & greatest, and I love it. Although im not a fan of white status bar. I like nothing stock, but I flashed black status bar, and pushed black goggle search box, and rm the apps I didn't want, like twitter and gmail. It's a keeper, and will only get better. The more ability to customize the better. That's why I root in the first place. Options, options, options, I love it.

You don't brick your phone by flashing a new ROM that doesn't contain radio. You don't brick your phone with almost anything that you do, in the worst case - you're left with a phone that doesn't load OS and needs wipe+reflash, and you lose all your settings and data.
But:
You DO brick your phone by flashing the wrong radio / interrupting radio flash before it finishes.
As with the rest of your questions: I suggest you use this forum and Google and read a lot. That would answer your questions.
Also, I was a user of CyanogenMod on 2.1, kept it until LeoFroyo hit 1.2-beta, flashed, liked, and now I'm with Enomther, who has a fast, stable ROM with most of the features Cyanogen has, and it covers everything I want/need. I'll wait for CyanogenMod to integrate Apps2SDExt into framework, and then compare it again.

[Q] Tired of laggy performance on HERO

Folks: I have HERO and downloaded official 2.1 update earlier this summer. I was really hoping that issues like dialer lag and general "under-performance" feel on HERO would improve but I am still disappointed. I have still lot of time before I get eligible for a phone upgrade. I have no experience with rooting or custom ROMs. Would a HTC sense-less ROM help my case? I love the form-factor of this phone but lag just kills the experience.
I would really appreciate if someone can point me to step-by-step procedure on how to get a ROM on HERO that works lag-free.
thanks
keep it stock if you like. thats how i did it at first. i rooted the stock stuff and deleted tons of sprint bloatware and the other useless apps; peep, teeter, gmail, socialnetworkprovider.apk...tons of stuff. after doing ONLY that, my device was faster and more responsive. ive never used a 'killer' of any sorts. linux is smart and you dont need 'killers'. of course, others may argue differently.
so head over to the dev forum and learn how to root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674833
edit: read, read, read. thats what i was told to do and i did. a lot of prep was required before rooting but if you follow the directions, it will go very smoothly
In my opinion, the two fastest ROMs here are
Darchdroid 2.8 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703133
and Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722122
But know that these two ROMs are based off Android only, and don't have the HTC Sense user-interface (in other words, they will look different than stock and have some different apps and features).
But first you will need to root your phone following these steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
After you root your phone, NANDROID BACKUP! Then you can try deleting apps like the post above mentions. See this post here about deleting apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581976
If just doing that isn't good enough for you, try one of the two ROMs I posted above. I think you'll find that rooting your phone is a very wise and eye-opening decision
Lol chromiumleaf you didn't recommend the ROM in your sig
OP if you are willing to root and still want Sense UI, nfinitefx45's stock ROM is for you. If you follow the instructions you will basically run an over clocked (if you choose, but recommended), streamlined version of stock ROM + apps2sd (your choice, but recommended)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267
thank you all for quick replies and helpful pointers to the resources. Looks like rooting + deleting apps is the first step. I will try that. Btw hadnt relaized that custom ROMs is a world on its own
It sure it as I have also been reading, and one more thing incase you did not know and I don't believe it was mentioned in this thread you need to not be on the 2.1 .6 firmware, you need to downgrade to the .5 firmware to be able to root, I know it is in the instructions pasted by other but was just giving you a reminder incase you still have not done anything. Now if you did finally Root I would like to know how it went, as I am also almost ready to Root, tired of mine going into sleep mode and not responding, anyways it has been a while since you were suppose to have rooted, just curious how it went and how was your experience, and if you did finally go to a custom Rom which one did you go with??

if you want to stay close to stock but be rooted id say use the stock rooted .6 rom with apps2sd. you could also use an oc kernel but i never found it did much for my phone. always use advance task killer and use a memory manager like autokiller and set it to aggressive or ultimate. my hero runs pretty good now. if your daring you could try the new froyo rom too.

[Q] BEST ROM with working FLASH PLAYER on cdma hero

Hey guys I'm a noob and sprint decided to give me a hero do to my defective noment I took it over the intercept because of the support here on XDA and I've been lookin around and I like but my question remains what's the best rom for the cdma hero that will still allow the flasplayer to work any ideas or ways to keep makin it work. THANX
Unfortunately, full flash support can not be achieved. There's a light version out there, but I don't know how well it works.

I believe Nfinite's Roms have Flash Lite, and then using a browser like Skyfire gives additional flash support as it deals with it server side.
Use Nfinites rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849024 there and then do a search for Zen's Any Kernal with no Perflock. It makes it an extremely snappy Sense Rom. Only Sense has the Flash working, none of the AOSP roms do I believe.
Only downside is Nfinite is on Hiatus due to some personal stuff but he has popped back in and said he isn't gone, just dealing with it and plans to update again soon.
my replyo
ok thanx so fo example even I port the flash light apk (htc flash player) can I at least use that on the aosp rom or the cm 6 or does they need the sense to even aollow it to work ? I just want to be ready to root asap when the hero arrives tomorow
You cannot use those functions in an AOSP rom, has to be with sense.
Ok one last thing before I do this once I get my recovery going and I'm rooted of course I do a data wipe then apply a zip (rom) file correct and if I want to try other roms repeat the proscces. Right just want to make sure. That's how I would do it on my moment

Yes you would go to recovery, do a factory reset, wipe Dalvik, Cache, etc and then you can flash the new zip for the rom you wish to try.
Most roms will have a sort of guide or instructions, some have things specific to the rom being flashed, so make sure and read the full post, and maybe browse the thread for tidbits that users have had to say about the rom.

need to flash STOCK 2.1

I am looking for stock 2.1 to put back on a Hero so that it can be programmed for a new user. (it currently has Fresh, and the programming - ##3282# does not work!)
So where can I find a flashable (not the RUU) 2.1?
Thanks for any help you can provide - a link would be great!
Look for liquid sense or nifinity stock based roms it's like 3 or 4 of them or look for the engery rom by pmgrands all of these are all sense based roms you can find in the hero/dev forum. Good luck
Yea it's Me Again With the
Modified Hero
Thanks - the problem is that Fresh is Sense-based too, and the ##3282# programming does not work on it.
Do you know is this works with the above mentioned ROMs?
Thx again.
Why don't you just run the RUU, activate the phone, and then root it again? Don't take it the wrong way, it's just a suggestion. I know I had a heck of a time trying to root my phone for the first time, but now that I have done it, I don't think I would have any problems doing it over again.

Should work with no problem is what I wanna say but the only way to make sure is to flash them for yourself. They should work though as they are newer builds. Good luck

You don't even have to unroot to activate the phone. Just flash any Sense rom and call Sprint. Cake and pie.

The problem is that the person with the phone is a newbie, and RUU is not working for some reason. Anyway I talked them through flashing the NFX-Sprint ROM so they got the damn thing programmed, and now they are back to Fresh.
(and to respond to laie1472, as I said above, the issue was that not every Sense ROM allows the programming, thus the question as to which work and whick do not...)
Thanks one and all.

new to captivate, need help upgrading to 2.3

i just got this captivate and it's a new build 1108(07.12.2011)i guess. i have been reading for hours and hours on several forums, about how to root and update my phone from 2.2 to 2.3 and use the xda lagfix. my moto droid 1 is rooted and running ss/cm's latest 2.3.4 and it smokes the pants off of this samsung. i am finding several step by steps for 2.1 to 2.2 and so on, but nothing for 2.2 to 2.3 that actually works for me. wondering if my phone is too new. i dont nesc need to root, but really want 2.3 and or xda lagfix. or do i need to root??? can someone please help me? i would give you my moto droid 1 hacked and smokin fast for a succesful updating of this slow as can be captivate. i'll even pay for shipping etc. LOL!!!
Find the odin one click thread, do that, you'll be back to 2.1, then find a thread explaining how to root, then follow the directions on how to flash gb. Pretty easy if you look around a bit and read up. If my phone wasn't about to die I would find the right links for you, but it shouldn't be too hard, there are plenty of guides on here

I have been off the captivate for a while now, so there are much easier ways to get to gingerbread than when I was still on it. However, if you backup your apps with titanium backup, you should be able to do the following: once you install your new rom, run the "restore missing apps" function, and it should keep your progress in games without messing up your rom. The problems people run into us when they run the "restore all apps" process, which restores system apps and screws things up. If you only restore missing apps, you'll be fine
The edit is because I'm drunk right now. If you backup your apps on your current rooted setup with titanium backup, you should be able to just restore missing apps with titanium backup once you flash the new rom without any troubles and have your saved game data.

Read, read, read. And read some more.
You will need to upgrade your bootloaders, and upgrade your ROM/Radio/Kernel.
This all carries with it a fair bit of risk. I would suggest you understand how to recover from a "soft brick" before attempting to re-flash or upgrade anything.
Also: This is in the wrong section, and if I'm honest, this isn't much of a first post if you're new to XDA.
THANX everyone. esp. *toy028*
read till my eyes bled... and
1-superoneclick to root
2-odin 1.7 to flash latest speedmod kernel
3-after headaches got cm7 rom to flash and now i'm stuck with it as it puts it's own kernel(clockworkmod4+) on the phone and it will not let me flash anymore update.zips
dont understand the edify request it gives. cant find an edify option in the rom. afraid to reroot, reflash speedmod and try again because it(the new kernel) doesnt seem to be compatible or want to let me upgrade LOL. so i am trying to get cm7 to please me.
wish there was a simplystunning rom. tried andromeda3 and it wouldnt flash for me. cm7 is very lacking. got gapps but it's still VERY lacking. quadrant got slower on video but faster on cpu??? wierd. neocore got slower too. only went from 55.7 to 52.3 but still. only one keyboard on cm7. no super customization like i"m used to with ss. i really miss forcing my browser to pc mode for streaming southpark etc. debug option doesnt have a desktop selection bummed but gonna try and deal with it.
thanx again
Andromeda3 wouldn't flash because of the version of cwm you are on. Andromeda3 is 2.2 and requires an older version of cwm

When you figure it all out, use Apex rom. It's up to date and works great for someone who is green.
I'll second the call for Apex. I've tried several of the available Gingerbread ROMs, but always ended up going back to Apex. Installed the recent 9.2 update and won't be looking back.

Guys/Gals! be careful when recommending JF6 Odin1 Click, he stated his release number on his phone being 1108, and if I'm not mistaken, he will brick his device based on that build number. OP do a search for Odin 1 click and make sure you can use the JF6 version
thanx for the warning. i was actually aware of such a conundrum being possible and thought i would try it anyways. there seems to be a lot of mis-information or better yet only partial instruction from those who assume eveyone knows all of the things to do before the instructions they DO give. at any rate, one click worked for root. everything is groovy BUT i still cant use any other rom but MIUI's latest. which is sooooo lacking it makes me sick and i go back to cm7 everytime. oh well. at least i can get 2370 on quadrant with cm7 and 57.7 on neocore instead of 1300 and 23.5 respectively. my moto droid one does 1700 and 23.7 so i figured the captivate would smoke it. now it finally does. it matters to me when using google earth and maps etc. those apps suck up the cpu/gpu ram and anything else they can. so i guess i'm happy with cm7.
