Basically never rooted a android device, just wanted to know the pros and cons of rooting what does rooting actually do?
replies wouls be awesome
thanks
If you read the forums at all you would know. See ya in your next thread labeled "how do I do it?" and your subsequent one labeled "I need help, I am stuck."
Do yourself and everyone else a favor, read the wiki. Do some research. Rooting isn't for everyone.

When I was first researching how to do it it was very difficult and took me a long time because every single question regarding any issue I had and searched for had stupid answers like yours. Please do everyone a favor and either answer the simple question or shut the **** up.
I don't think you understand this forum...

I'm sorry to say, but he's right. Do you know how many threads are there on the first page of Q&A that says "on 2.3.3, how to root" ? A few.
There isn't any cons, only pros to rooting. That's my advice.

That's why I told him to read the wiki. Not a bunch of threads with questions. All of the answers are there. And yet I see you provided nothing. It has already been stated, rooting isn't for everyone. If you need to ask what it really does, you most likely don't need to be doing it without some research.
Here ya go. This should break it down enough for you. http://www.talkandroid.com/7686-wha...uld-i-do-it-the-pros-cons-of-android-rooting/
So this is a Q&A forum but without the actual Q... Gotcha.
OK if you want to be a troll...
The OP didn't ask how to root so your first reply is moot. All the information given to his actual question, what does root give you, is sufficient enough. Yet here you are again trying to be a tool. If you can't take 5 minutes to research a subject as deep as root access, you don't need to be rooting your device in the first place. Simple as that.

I just got my g1 and I keep hearing about root. What is it and where can I get it?
Obvisouly I know. My point is, are we all sick of posts like this? Especially when the person doesn't search? Could a mod please make another forum for noobs so they can post these types of thread? Somewhere where they won't get flamed and somewhere where noob posts won't clutter the forums? Something like "xda-developers > dream > noob" or something to that effect?
I know this is the wrong place for this and that it is way out of topic, but the reason why I posted it here was because this is where these noob posts take place and surely regurlars will agree with me. Please do this for the greatewr good of the forums?
Thank you for your time and please respond if you agree.
Also maybe a spell check feature? (See last post haha)
do you really think that the 'noobs' would actually get help from the noob forum?.. think about that for a sec

Im not so sure thats the best approach.. Why is such a big deal that a so called noob ask questions, to ensure that he or she doesn't screw there phone up. And i agree if they would just do some research and read stickies, etc. then they would learn something. But if their noobs, then they are probably noobs to the site, and lets face it although this is by far the best forum available for android development its not the easiest to navigate for NOOBS. And if noobs posting noob questions pertaining to android development means that the forum & Community strengthen, then so be it. And Cbowely lets face it some of todays noobs will be tom elite developers, and they are who we depend on.....

If you want root, you will need a shovel, and have to dig and careful not to break the stems. lol, i could not resist.
"root is the user name or account that by default has access to all commands and files on a Linux or other Unix-like operating system. It is also referred to as the root account, root user and the superuser. "
Assuming you are coming from Windows OS environment, Root is like the Administrator account.
How can you get it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
I am noob. Most of my post are thanks for this. Awsome thing that made my phone run better. Or if I have a slight issue with somthing I may post a qestion. And I have had a thread locked befor...that thought was a good qestion but lokking back it wasnt ... but anyways.
I would like see a noob section. I basicaly leech off of this site and if I could help some noobs out I would be more than happy to so the real devs could get stuff done and work stuff out.
I am not saying that noobs asking questions is a bad thing, but I DO think there COULD be a better place for it than the developer section. I do believe the noobs would actually get help in the noob section because some people like helping noobs out. I know I would as well as a lot of other people I see in threads that help out noobs, I believe those type of people would enjoy helping the noobs.
Damn I can't believe that I am posting here because I don't want no Enemies, I have gotten tremendous help from this forum, not only with making my phone 100 times better but I also gained a boat load of knowledge in the process. I am not one that would start a thread unless I was at the last possible step I could be after long hours of reading and reading and seraching and through this process I have even been able to help out others....
but come on... someone posts a question cause they are having an issue that they need to get corrected with their equipment and wham they get roasted by useless reply's telling them to "use search" one after the another, after the another, after another when all someone has to do is provide the answer and tell them they could have found it had they searched... or they could have just given a link to the answer and the thread stops... like this thread I came here to see if I could help because the topic is "new g1 please help" this is about as useless as someone starting a thread on which color G1 should I use...
damn just wasted 15 minutes of my life to type this... remember people that everyone that started here had to post their first message, hence we were all "noobs" once when we started as well....
Again I don't want make ANY enemies I just want to make my phone the envy of everyone that sees it(like yesterday when I bought my daughter her G1 and I was typing on my on screen keyboard and they guy at the T-mobile store says hey you got your update, and said no I got my cupcake and man it sure tates good) and if I can provide a link to help steer someone in the right direction so be it...
end of my venting...
peace!
Exactly my point. I'm not *****ing about people making noob posts asking for help, but the fact is they get bombarded with "use the search button" or "this topic has been covered". I am not saying people SHOULDN'T post help threads, but there isn't a place for it.
My point: There SHOULD be a place for people to ask for help.. like a noob forum. Combing through mostly off topic threads, like the rom threads, can take a while and may not be helpful for noobs who do not understand what an spl or fastboot or dalvic cashe is. So with a noob forum, there would be a place to ask: "I succefully rooted, but the instructions say spl, and my english is not very good, so I am having trouble understaing".
This would help
1. Un-clutter the forums
2. From keeping large threads from going off topic
3. Noobs find they want easier by just asking
I mean I agree that asking a simple question that would take a sentence or less to answer would be easier than searching a crap load of threads for hours to find an answer. If I didn't know what an spl was, and I searched, a lot of threads come up, but not many that explain what an spl is. It could take DAYS to find the answer, when someone could just easily easily answer what an spl is.
Again I am not *****ing about noob posts!! Sometimes they need to be asked. It is impossible for a noob to get simple questions answered without spending hours researching.
I believe a noob forum would benefit us all.
Also the topics could be formated:
Help: phone looping
When problem is resolved:
[Solved] phone looping

Why is it that people can NOT read a forum before posting a question? Every forum i have read answers my question with out even posting a question. Why then do people insist on posting a question here and wasting time these guys can be spending on comming up with the MODS we the people want/need. I can not afford a Captivate for another month or so, but I already have a lot of answers/solutions to my questions or potential problems. Reading forums is not anymore time consumming that posting a question and waiting a few hours or days for the answer. I really hate it when I see that an answer is "Its has already been posted. I have read through this forum many times and I think my only remaining question might be in understanding the technical "How to's". HOWEVER i know where the asnwer of "How to" s Located. The problem exists on all forums everywhere. People want to be spoon fed as it is easier then actually searching for answers. Searching requires work, and most people have an aversion to work.
Those who can, use Google; those who can't, ask those who can.
If only i could get paid for my search skills.
Still consider myself a noob
Even though I have been on this site for a couple of years, and have successfully flashed way too many windows roms, I would still consider myself a noob, because I have not the skills and knowledge that many of you do. I myself have been made fun of for posting a "noob" question, and it is not fun. I always search before I ask a question, but sometimes I don't know the correct term to search for, so have no luck finding an answer. I understand how frustrating it is for you developers and advanced users to have such simple seeming questions, but please give some of us a break, not all of us are looking to be spoon fed, but actually have searched and are still frustrated. I myself am an avid researcher. I have been on this site for the past week looking at the Samsung Captivate that I hope to have in my hands on Monday and cannot wait to get started with it. I may have questions so please forgive me if they sound simple to you, I will always search first, and only post if I can't find the answer.
Just my thoughts. No offense intended to anyone.
Honestly its OK to ask the questions as long as they are posted in this section

Well, it's one thing to ask a question where you need help. There seem to be a fair number of people who just ask questions because they are lazy. There was a thread in the general section where the poster said they were considering getting a Captivate, Vibrant or Streak, and then continued to ask the following questions:
1) Has the Bootloader been hacked?
2) Are there custom ROMs?
3) Which has a bigger developer community?
4) Can they use the international (Galaxy S/i9000) firmwares?
5) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using international firmware?
6) What accessories are available?
When informed these questions can be answered with a cursory look at the development forums for both phones, the OP replies they they are looking for "opinions" from people who own the phones. Sorry pal, the questions you asked have factual answers that can be easily obtained by a quick look at the developers forums. Lazy is lazy, no matter how you phrase it.
I think it's instances like these people are frustrated with.

There wouldn't be 12345 pages of crap if you people would stop making duplicate threads for questions already answered and linking to news that's already been posted. Do your part.
Also, pro-tip... use the search function to cut down on the 12345 pages of crap and get a few pages of relevant search results.
Dont wanna offend any one but.....
1.U just posted something in the incorrect forum.
2. As stated above some people cannot find the correct search terms. Also searching from xda app is a pita. Cant select a subform only and searches who site .
3. Some people who answer these questions may enjoy helping others. And it can't be a waste of there time as they have s choice on whether r not to answer tge question.
..now I know I posted a thread earlier in incorrect form. Seems my xda app never updated and showed a Q&A thread. Had to delete app and reinstall. So hopefully it will be switched to correct subforum.

Is this developement related or should this be in the QA section? I do think it belongs in the QA section. Next time post in the correct section or post will get reported as spam lol
1. Search dude. This is one of the most obvious questions I've ever seen asked here.
2. Read around the forums before posting, that goes hand-in-hand with searching...
3. Post in the right friggin' section. You have a [Q] in your tread title which means it's a question, which is fine, but its not a "Captivate Android Development" question! It belongs in the Question and Answer section. (which is amazingly obvious, it's not like they hide it from you around here)
4. The answer to your question is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 which you didn't even need to search to find, its on the first page of the Development section which I know you looked in because you posted here.

I have to agree with this 100%. When I first started I didn't even realize I could search the forums or threads. Instead of someone pointing out to me there was search and explain how it works I was unbelievably verbally beaten to a bloody pulp about what an idiot I was. Even today I was taken to task for a post that cites a measure of rom's performance instead of the accepted evaluations we see day in and day out-fantastic, great, best, unbelievably fast. To me the true evaluation of a rom has to be functionality and some measure. If you do not think Quadrant scores, net speed tests and Lin pack scores measure performance tell me what does. I understand e mail works, videos play, I can make phone calls etc. That tells me how the rom functions. How do you measure a rom's performance other than to say fantastic, great, good etc.? Tell me.
All the "this is in the wrong forum, dude" posts are not about development either, so you're all off topic.
Spend less time bashing, and more time helping the new forum members.
The internet doesn't need more assholes, just more manners and good examples.

So just because someone is new to the forums we give them some leeway because they can't READ? Seriously guys it doesn't matter how new you are, if you have a question, put it in the Question and Answers thread. Almost every website has a search function, they aren't hard to find, so that excuse of "I didn't know" is pretty bogus.

when you are reading these forums every day trying to see whats going on in the dev world, all you see on the front page are [Q] threads, posted in the wrong section. then we have to filter out all the BS and try to find useful info, when it should be right there, easily accessible, which is the point of breaking up the sections of the forums....
it's clutter
and the mods do a good job of moving them, but the n00bs come in here and post the BS so fast, its impossible to keep up.
First of all, I am SORRY if these questions have been asked before, but I can't find them.
I have 1successfully rooted my EVO with unrevoked. Now my brother wants me to do his Sprint HTC Hero
Here are my questions.
I see that there is an download, but his radio is 2.42.02.10.29 and this is not listed. Is this an issue?
Is there a downside to having to use this unrevoked forever?
All that he wants is to do is get a bigger SD card so that he can move his apps off his phone and put more on his SD card. Is this possible? Even without rooting?
Thanks
This should be in q&a not in development.
Mods please place in correct thread. Also if you go to unrevoked's website I'm sure you will find more info there to address your concerns regarding the radio. Also try google searching it should have more than enough info to help you out as well. I've never used that method of rooting but I'm sure you will receive better responses if you post your questions in the proper thread.
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
I have tried google and I have gone to the Unrevoked website before I came here. I have not found the answers to my question, that is why I came here. If you had directed me to the proper thread (as you suggested) maybe my problem would be solved.
You are a senor member and I am new here. Remember we come here for help, not condescending responses.
Of course he can get a new sd card, but moving apps to sd requires root... As for the root, the method your talking about only works with the .29 radio, so to get s off you would need to downgrade the radio to .27 using RUU and then root, if you want.
Edit: you can then upgrade the radio after you s off unrevoke it. Theres a flashable .29.
Edit 2: there are much simpler root methods, I created a thread full of links, click my name and check it out.
Edit 3: damn laie, you gettin cold bro...
Puzzled how so??? Never used the mod so I can't give advice. So I suggested the next best thing. But I know your on xda as much if not more than I so I knew you would lend a hand. But until you did he might have found the answer to his question on the website or threw google. And he did post his question in the development thread not q&a I just asked the mods to move it to the right thread so he would receive better help. Don't think that's mean at all. By the way how did you like my name suggestion???

You guys rock. Thanks for the kind words and letting me know that not everyone on here is an *******.
I think people get a little too high and mighty on this site and forget it is a FORUM that people come to for HELP.
Recommendations such as being referred to google, and telling me what I am doing incorrectly without giving advice, like mean, rude people in general, well simply SUCK.
Thanks again to the good guys. We rule!
Dude if you post in the wrong forum some one here will tell you. You posted in the development froum. Your question clearly had nothing to do with development. Thats why its a q&a thread to post a question and to receive an answer. And if your modifying your phone google is your best friend. This is good advice. Had you had posted your question in q&a there would have been nothing to post about what you did wrong. And as far as being referred to google everything that duce or even myself would have told you would be on google. Its been many, many members who have had the same problems and most if not all have been solved. In my opinion in most cases google search is much quicker than reading threw thousands of post. In short glad you got it worked out.

...... the force is strong with this one
This is the forum where I posted:
HTC Hero - CDMA Hero CDMA - Q&A HTC- Hero root with unrevoked?
Just for my own edification...
Please tell me where this refers to a DEVELOPMENT forum (whatever that means) and why the Q&A section on the title of this forum is not a place where I can ask a question?
The first thing I did was apologized if I was doing this wrong.
I tried to start all over again and I still ended up at this forum.
How would I know it was not the right one?
what on earth are you talking about

Dude, I came her for help...what on earth are YOU talking about..how does this nonsense about listening and you resisting help anyone at all? Why are you commenting on my thread and not helping?
Please..if you are going to say something..say something that helps me and anyone else with the same problem.
mike, you originally posted in develpment. It was moved to Q&A leaving no traces in development. so when you looked after the fact you were already moved....make sense?
hello everybody, i have a 4x that I just rooted, thinking of installing a custom rom for better performance and battery life, but I have a few doubts.
1: can I restore it to the original rom latr and how do I backup everything?
2: I´m having an issue with lack of ram message, will a custom rom help.....

I read a post on CWM, and thought there was something I could do to get more out of the Phone. anyway thanks :good:
I'm not the person who seems to think that questions should be posted in the 'General' forum, rather than in the 'QUESTIONS & ANSWERS' forum.
I'm not the person who is incapable of reading the forum rules before asking questions.
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.

If you had bothered to follow that first rule of XDA then it would have taken you less than 5 minutes to realise how stupid and pointless the questions were. If you don't like the answer I gave, then next time SEARCH and READ before deciding to post a question.

I dont think people mean to be rude, but when people come on most days and ask the same questions without looking first, it annoys some people!

if that option existed, the developer section would not be missing all the links to custom roms
you can add some hacks and play around with some workarounds, but only a semi alpha rom exists which is for development only. and hoping others could find interest in how i made to create new roms with locked bootloader if possible.
