[Q] should I get this tablet

hey, I already have an expensive smartphone plan but I want all the experience of android so I am looking for a somewhat inexpensive WiFi only android powered tab with a good build quality (good specs, multitouch, at least 6-7 inches, 1ghz, you know, that stuff). I currently have a windows phone, but I used android long ago and I was wondering, is this the tab for me?
also, is the android experience good on the tab?
and another thing/ slightly off topic, if I bought apps in the amazon app store, can I download them on the samsung galaxy tab?
sorry for this barrage of questions, but I just don't know if this is the right tablet for me
The tab is the best 7inch tablet on the market hands down, i love mine to death and it goes everywhere with me besides the pub. It was my first android device, but its not that different from android phones ive used, its just wayyy better for gaming and web related stuff
Just to provide some colour (yes, that's the correct spelling of colour) to the argument:
No. Don't get one.
I also wouldnt buy one,
I just got one bbecause I only had 300€ and no cellphone, so this is my all in one device.
But it really isnt as great as I thought and if you have a gooood cellphone already a 7inch tablet wont give you much more functionality...
I thought it would be great, it is, but not really functional.
Thanks for the input. If I don't get this tablet, what tablet would you suggest (I don't have a laptop anymore so I want another mobile computing device, other than my tower) for under $500 USDollars?
Very subjective. Getting it or not depends on individual requirement. I had mine for more than 6 months now and still loving it; maybe because how I use it and suit my requirement. Lugging an 7" inch tablet with phone function everywhere is no joke. Quite heavy after a while. Well, my guess is, lugging an Ipad is also the same. And because it is my 1st Android; it just got better.

For fun
In all seriousness, this is a great device. Solid piece of kit, well worth it.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab. Now that's dedication

Since you already have a smartphone, get Viewsonic Gtablet and put a custom firmware on it as soon as it arrives.
I've had mine for a few months now and recently looked at the Xoom and the new Acer 10" tablets.
I don't use it for voice but use mobile data quite a lot.
After comparing I've decided to stay with the Galaxy Tab because, by far, it is the best made and (despite Samsung) developers are giving us all we need to keep the Tab great.
well, just tried out the sprint version in the store (any difference between that and wifi only in terms of the OS?) and I think that the tab is perfect in terms of hardware however, I will try out other options like that viewsonic Gtab 10 when I get the chance to.
thanks for all the input and opinions
If you just want an android experience, and don't really mind having a 3G, then Archos 70 can be a cheaper alternative. Otherwise, if you want to venture into the realm of 7" tablets and want a lot of customization or an pure eBook experience, the Nook Color will, errr, color you impressed.
Otherwise, if you want the best 7" android tablet that no other 7" android tablet can hold a candle to, then go on and get the tab.
@grammarfreak - Random thought, that's what they said too when I went to UK a year ago. The Philippines uses American English, so we say, "color" instead. Btw, do you guys spell it as, "Center" or, "Centre?"
Edit: accidentally typed 10" instead of 7" for the Nook

Centre. And "Z" is "zed", not "zee"
don't get the tab
Don't get the Tab.. Buy a B&N Nook Color and put this on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954902
It runs as fast as the Tab. Has WAY better XDA Development and cost 250 instead of 350.
I am regretting buying my Tab.. It's the most hostile dev forum I have seen for getting a straight answer to any question. that's not a good sign.
hmm, judging by the specs, the nook color may pay off as the better tablet (for the price) in the end except, does it have any HD output? that is important to me however, its not a deal breaker

You mean it can play 1080p without hiccups? If that's true, I'm buying
Nah nah nah.
Dont get a nook color. I had one and I sold it after a month. It was the first device that I've ever sold.
In comparison to the galaxy tab it pretty much sucks.
The mediaplaying capabilities are limited to 854•480 mp4 baseline profile.
So you have to start to convert again.
Not that I have a problem with converting, after a while of constant converting its very annoying....
The tab has overwhelming mediaplayingcapabilities. It has played absolutely EVERYTHING that I've thrown at it.
mkv, avi, xvid, mp4, mov. 1080p no problem.
I had to only convert some vids once, they where mov, the tab played them, but they didn't show up in the videoapp, so I converted them to mp4.
The tab is so cheap now. I wouldn't save those 100$ to get a nook.
If you really like the tab, you could also simply pop in the sim from your cellphone and use the tab as cellphone-replacement.
That's the way I use it, the tab is actually the first cellphone I've owned LOL.
I rather have a device that is a working jumbojet than a device that is a small plane and everyone is wanting it to be a spaceshuttle.....

Thanks, needed an opinion from someone who's had both devices.
well, I took a look at the Gtab (thx ravness for telling me) and the specs for that are amazing at an even more amazing price so I have added THAT to my list of possible tablet devices I might get.
so, does anyone have both/can tell me what the viewsonic Gtab is like compared to the galaxy tab?
and thanks for all the suggestions and, If I wasn't interested in tweaking my device(so as to make it how I want it to be) as soon as I get it, I would probably already have a galaxy tab however, Dual core 1.2Ghz processor does make the Gtab look nice (aside from the default homescreen/skin which looks and functions terribly).

To nook or not to nook?

So I'm in the market for a new toy to tinker with and I'm wondering if I should continue to look at the nook color as an option. I just bought a HP touchpad that I'm planning on returning simply cause I'm used to working with android and CM and don't want to fragment myself further.
Is the nook a worthy investment; do I have to worry about the community walking away from it like I see they are beginning to do with the evolution I own, or should I wait for some of the other 7-9" android offerings in the roster? Any input is appreciated.

I like my NookColor a lot.
I have not used a Android tablet like Xoom or Acer or Asus to compare.
But it seems to work well.
ManualNooter = Works Very nicely, and also lets you have the NookColor stock OS look.
CM7 Works a good bit snappier imho than ManualNootered NC.
Mine is ManualNooter'ed as my wife reads now and then and does not like the CM7 interface.
I do a lot of reading and posting on ClubNook.com forums on mine, for the most part it does well. (I have it O/C also)
The Nook has a great screen, low price and it's the perfect size and weight. You can hold the Nook for long times without your hand becoming fatigued. I've used a few other tablets and I can honestly say I prefer the Nook. The Nook also has an active community with some great talent, I personally believe we'll see an ICS port and continued support for some time.
One of the best features of the Nook is that it boots from the sd card first. This device is, to my knowledge, the only android device to have this feature. Almost makes it unbrickable. But as has already been said, the dev community for the nook is great and cyanogen, with all the recent improvements, puts the nook on par with many of the higher end devices on the market. While there are a number of very good android tablets on the market, the nook, for the money, is one of the best values out there.

It cannot be beat for $200 (re-certified). Everyone who I have shown this thing to wants one, including a coworker who has a Xoom tablet already (not to replace it, but to have in addition to because of size).
My Mom uses hers for:
Angry Birds and Solitaire
Epub format books (Moon Reader +)
Grocery list (Grocery King)
Viewing pictures in Gallery
Email
Web browsing
Pandora Radio
Netflix
Alternately, my Wife has a 1G iPad and would not trade it for any Android tablet.
If you genuinely want to tinker with it, then you want a nook. It's virtually impossible to brick, and if you did somehow manage to brick it you'd only be out $200/$250.
If you just want a cool toy -- you probably still want a nook. It has a great screen, and is speedy enough for just about anything you throw at it. Unless you get a really great deal on something with a much better processor, the nook is the best bang for the buck.
If you want it to show off -- it depends on who you're showing it off to. Execs probably won't be impressed by anything unless it looks like an iPad, techy people will think it's awesome, and average people will be intimidated by the idea of hacking an ebook to be a tablet.
Hi,
I have both a NC and a Asus Transformer (and an iPad), and am an App developer.
My 2 cents is that the Nook Color is a great ebook reader, but a bit limited as a tablet. Honeycomb is a reasonable first cut at a tablet interface where has the NC's 2.2 or CM7 both feel like they were meant for a phone. So if I wanted the tablet experience I would spend the extra money and get a true Android table running Honeycomb.

$180 + free shipping. Although I ordered mine from there and a pixel was broken but they are replacing it.
My $0.02:
For a guy who love to tinker but doesn't want to spend a lot of cash-o-la, the NC is awesome. Even if I had unlimited funds, I would still get a 7" tablet. 10" (like the girlfriend's Viewsonic Gtablet) is too big, and the speed difference between our processor and a tegra for what I do (PDFs, surfing, etc) doesn't really come into play (I am overclocked at 1.2 GHz, however). If you want to play HD vid (on a non HD screen?), or want HDMI out or a full sized usb port, get something else).
This is the best community I've found on XDA, and the developers here are nothing short of amazing.
As mentioned earlier, you can get a NC for $180 on ebay. It's tough to beat. Then again, I have a desktop for CFD, a laptop for portable power, and a NookColor for accessing stuff on the fly. I couldn't justify spending $500+ (give or take) on a Android tablet when I could buy a laptop that could do a lot more and still get a NC for the same price.
Well the issue isn't money although I am a very frugal/ value conscious individual. Like I said I have a HP touchpad but I plan on returning it cause of the size; which I feel instead very portaboe, and due to me being so deep into android that I'm not extremely interested in webos. I got a great deal on the touchpad but I like to get the most enjoyment out of my time and from the capabilities of the NC I've seen on YouTube it is a tempting device regardless of price. My only fear is that it will soon be a forgotten device like I see happening to my HTC evo. Thanks for all your input.

hp touchpad v/s cheap chinese ics tablets

hi there
i am planning to take a tablet
i have little confusion wether to take touch pad or cheap chinese gemei g9 which comes with pre install ICS 4.0.3
here are my questions regarding touchpad
1. is the cm9 stable on tp ??
2. how much is the battery backup time using wifii watching videos
3. is the keyboard and stand recommended for buying with touchpad or not required [coz i am getting bundle offer of wireless charging stand+32gb tab+keybord]???
waiting for your suggestions
Thanks
I bought one of the Chinese models and ended up selling it within a couple of weeks. To be honest, the first thing I noticed was how flimsy it was. I even tried the 7" and the 10" models. They are feature packed in comparison to the TP but the quality of build is far inferior to the HP TP. This even spreads to the charger which (in the UK) are decidedly dodgy.
Plus, you are never going to get the backup and user base that you get with the likes of the TP. Look at all the work that is going on with the worldwide user base in terms of adapting towards the Android switch (from Webos) and you won't see anything like that in terms of support for the Chinese models.
CM9 although only at A2 status is remarkably stable. I've seen beta software on other OS less stable.
I'd say if you get the chance to get the case and charging stand then go for it. A case is a definite must in my view. Mine is never out of it and after six months of daily use is like new.
Hope that helps
thanks for ur reply
what about the battery backup on ics ???
what about keyboard i am getting 32gb+keybord+touchstone stand+original hp case for 275 usd
Definitely get the touchpad. I have an HP touchpad with both the hp keyboard and touchstone but I bought them separately. I also have an Ipad 2 so I think I'm in a position to have at least a non biased opinion. I used my HP touchpad for my thesis using webOS since it's interface is so polished and easy to use. Now i'm using ICS more only because of games. I mainly use the Ipad for games. Interfacewise I think webOS is the best especially if you want a sub for your pc or laptop. Ipad for the apps. Ipad still feels smoother even though my Touchpad is overclocked at 1.5.
I bought the touchstone together with the touchpad but I rarely used it. I felt stupid for buying it but since last month, while working on my thesis) I really enjoyed the ease of just placing your tablet on for easy reading etc.
I ordered one Gemei G9 16gb version from merimobiles yesterday. my research regarding this particular chinese tablet says its build quality is pretty good among plethora of chinese tablets. Specs are damn good too. I wont comment on touchpad because i havent even seen this device.
I have my touchpad on AOKP milestone 4. Its pretty snappy and very stable. The only issue so far has been sound problems here and there.
You should get the Touchpad, its biggest selling point is:
Developers, Developers, Developers
It lacks some hardware like microSD, HDMI, but its still a great device that can dual boot.
At this point why not get a tegra 2 tablet they should be getting major price cuts soon

I just found an open box (returned) 32G touchpad at BestBuy on sale for $129.
I bought it. Don't know if I'll keep it. It's a bit heavy, and not quite the resolution I want, but wow, a lot more affordable than a new Transformer Prime/Infinity or a new iPad.
If it works out, I may buy a few more (or wait until the new Nexus Tablet is out.)
I bought a cheap chinese model too. I return ed it to the store 2 days later. simply cannot compare in build quality and speed.

Thinking of buying a Touch Pad; Got a question

The owner already has cornerstone flashed.
Is android pretty reliable operation on a touch pad? Like, would I be able to tell the difference in every day use (games, Facebook, etc.)
Also, what's the resale value of these? I want a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or a Xoom but someone offered me a good deal on it so if I don't like it, I want to sell it for a 10.1 or Xoom.
Wanting some of your personal insight on these concerns. Thanks!

Issues on CM9 so far:
No camera
No mic
Sound is unstable (sometimes it produce noise, restart app usually work)
Overdriven amp when touchpad switched off (cracking sound)
Some say wifi, no problem for me
Most Gameloft games doesn't work
GTA III no sound for me
Other than that its a perfect tablet for its price/spec ratio. And CM9 is pretty stable, no force closes (unless for those app that is really incompatible).
Resale value? You kidding me? it was 149 i think for the 32gb version, its been 5 months and if i say i want to sell it for 200 everyone will just queue. Its really depend on how cheap can you get it.
In fact I'm using it everyday for uni, and never face any problem or unreliability issue, and it is in fact faster than asus transformer (not the prime).

I have owned both a TouchPad and a Xoom. As much as I love my TouchPad, at this very moment and both devices being at their current levels of ICS development, I'd have to say the Xoom has a slight edge.
I begrudingly gave my Xoom to my wife when Android 4.0 first appeared for the TouchPad, and she hasn't come back to me once with any significant issues (and she's not a big "techie" sort of person); she absolutely loves it. So to address your reliability question...from my experience, the Xoom is by far more reliable. If you wish to read on....hear are my 2 cents:
Motorola Xoom:
1) Fully developed ICS rom with working camera, mic, and facelock
2) Wifi is rock solid (have not experienced even one lapse in connectivity)
3) Cornerstone rom is available (at least it was at one time)
4) SD memory card expansion capability
HP TouchPad
1) Less expensive (normally)
2) Video playback
3) WebOs option
4) Vastly superior screen quality
5) (I prefer) the 9.7" dimensions of the TP over the 10.1" of the Xoom
Takeaways: I'm not a big gaming person, so I can't speak on gaming performance on either device. My only real issues with the Xoom were the inability to play many of my music videos and its subpar display/video quality when it did play. Some will argue that either the camera/mic functionality are insignificant and/or you could reboot into WebOs to use them, but that doesn't hold water with me. It's something about having total functionality in one place (even if I don't use all of the features regularly) that makes the Xoom more appealing. As far as using the WebOS camera, there's always that issue of having to wrangle with your wifi/router settings to restore connectivity when you have to reboot to Android ICS/CM9 because WebOS is so limited in what you can do on that platform.
Bottomline: Basically if you were only going to buy one device today, I'd have to reluctantly recommend the Xoom over the TouchPad. However if anyone ever solves the wifi, camera, and mic issues with the TouchPad, then game over...the TouchPad would win hands down.
One last note: I really enjoy the Cornerstone functionality on my TP, but I'm currently on the AOKP Milestone 4 rom for more consistent wifi connectivity. However I experienced my one (and to this point) only boot loop action on the milestone rom. So I'm more than likely only another wifi drop/boot loop away from going back to Cornerstone.
I would say android on touchpad is 99% reliable. You may get a hiccup here and there, but IMO, its usually not a big deal.

Useability Q about a Nook vs HP Touchpad. + Android Wear issues?

Hi
There are refurb Nook HDs for $52 today, and I'm wondering about getting one and loading CM 12.
Have never held one in my hands - I currently have an HP Touchpad on CM 11. I use it almost 100% for Kindle Reader.
1) I'm wondering is the Nook sluggish or does it run fast on CM12?
2) Am thinking about getting a Sony SmartWatch 3 and would use this Nook as my main Android machine to sync with it. So I'm wondering if bluetooth and Android Wear work fine on it?
Thanks so much!!!
Jaymer...
I have both.
Touchpad running cm13 while the nook hd running cm12.1.
Nook is faster than the touchpad, even touchpad is running at 1700
I use a pair of bluetooth headphones connected to my nook to listen to music and there are No bluetooth issues on nook that i am aware.
No idea about wear
Might be a better idea on grabbing a nexus 7 2013 instead for a little bit more. You get a lot more out of it, it has more ram, a better screen and better processor.
Just my 2¢
