[Q] Going to get a Nook tonight- Need your help - Nook Color General

Hey guys, I'm going to pick up a Nook Color tonight because I'm highly dissapointed in the Motorola Xoom.
Couple questions. I'm looking to root it, so I'm wondering what are the good rom's at the moment and was it easy to root?
I have a rooted droid x- so I'm familiar with the rooting process.
Also does the nook play avi's files without being rooted?

Easy to root. Boot from SD with an image.
I'm using standard ROM until video and GPU are working in either Froyo or Honeycomb.

So your saying avi wont work on the nook (rooted) just stock?

Use vplayer to play avi's on android devices. It works on your droid x too.

Pros/Cons of installing Froyo vs Rooted 1.1 or Rooted 1.01

I have a stock 1.0.0 NC. Haven't rooted it yet. I had it rooted on 1.1 with the autonooter 3.0, but I ended up getting the black screen of death (this is another story altogether). Anyway, I want to root again but I haven't decided if I want to go ahead and try Froyo or just do 1.0.1 rooted or maybe 1.1. I just want to know what the pros/cons of going to froyo or staying with rooted 1.0.1 or 1.1? And then wait until Honeycomb is better put together. My main reason I want to go to Froyo is that I am a medical student and I couldn't get epocrates to work with rooted 1.1. It kept saying my log on info wasn't correct and I found others with the same problem, but I have seen many saying that it works fine in Froyo. Other than that, I just need to surf, gmail, google voice, calender and not much else.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have done both. If you do Froyo, you do lose the BN software. But you can download Android Nook which is almost the same. It does take a little bit of work to get it almost fully functional as well. Some people have said flash didn't work good for them, it works flawless for me. Couldn't go without it. Some apps don't work though. When I was on rooted stock, Homerun Battle was my go to game. But I can't play it since I've upgraded.
There's no more black bar at the bottom so I remapped the volume keys to Menu and Back. I don't know how people do without it, it's great. The last thing that kinda bothers me about Froyo, is for some reason my touch screen is slightly less responsive. Not a big deal, but wish I had a fix. Keep in mind though, that CM7 stuff is coming out I guess soon so you might want to hold out a little longer.
Sooooo, what is CM7? and why should I wait? Is it a build of Honeycomb? Maybe I should just try to get someone to help me with epocrates?

If you are not familiar with android, clockwork recovery, or bootable cwr I would hold off on cm7 or froyo for now. Autonooter would be the best place for you to start with rooting. Androidtablets.net is a good resource also for nook.

Cm7 is gingerbread build so its like froyo but a bit faster. If you want to change your nooks os i suggest you change it to honeycomb preview v4. All you have to do is burn the provided image to a 4gb sd card and put that into your nook, it keeps your nook stock(in case you dont want to root) but allows you to have honeycomb. To boot back into stock nook just remove the sd card while the nook is off and power it on
Hope this helps

I stick with 1.1 because it have working cifs.ko for cifsmanager. I just love that app. I stream books, movies, musics, etc from my computers.

[Q] Ideal Setup For The Non-Techie?

My wife loves my NC, she wants one for herself but doesn't want all the glitches I keep hitting due to my constantly trying the newest thing posted here on XDA.
So my question is what would be a great setup on a new NC for a non-techie type to use that is rock stable, has B&N/Android Markets, can play games like Angry Birds, still function as an eReader and if possible play Youtube videos?

Imho Autonooter 3.0.0. The only issue for me was the wifi-dead-after-sleep-thingy.
Just use the nookie froyo or honeycomb builds that run off a Microsd card and leave the stock nook software as it is for the lady. Just boot off the microsd card when ever you use it and boot the stock off the emmc for the wifey.
or
You can also get another nook color. If you are like me, you don't like to share or hear complaints.

Picked up a second NC yesterday. Had to drive 45 miles to do it but I wasn't giving mine up...lol
I'd actually suggest 1.0.1 rooted, since I've found it has greater compatability than 1.1.0 and theres no real reasons to upgrade to 1.1.0 (you can get pinch zoom without it)
I'd suggest Stock 1.0.1 rooted (or 1.1.0 rooted if you prefer), with overclock.

[Q] Just bought nookColor - Root or Wait?

I just bought my nookColor yesterday and loving it so far. That said, I'd definitely prefer to have the Android marketplace on it and have more games, utilities, etc.
So I was going to root it later today, once I pick up a microSD card, but then I watched one of the 'I rooted my Nook' videos on youtube and the guy in the video mentioned that Barnes & Noble will be coming out with an update to FroYo in March.
So...should I wait to root? I'm assuming that BN's update will likely interfere or delete the root. I'm okay with having to re-root but wanted to see what people's thoughts were regarding the possibility of BN being jerks and if their update can sense a root and brick the Nook or cause problems?
I rooted my Nook and that's basically all I use it for now... The only reason to go to stock is to have the ability to use "read-to-me" books. You can't go wrong! But I can't give you advice on how the rooting will affect updates. Worst case scenario will be that you have to re-root.
Hope that helps; I'm a newbie too but haven't been disappointed yet!
I always thought there are ways to unroot and go back stock.
Check it out in development forum.

Personally I bought my NC specifically TO root it. Got it about a month ago and within an hour of purchase it was rooted and I never looked back.
I'm using just a basic root with stock eclair. Works for me just great. I run an overclocked kernel and launcher pro as my default launcher. Loving this thing!
Nookie froyo off of an SD card is good too and something you can setupt dual boot easily using guides in the dev forum.

Can you please point us to the right thread? I've gone on there and there are a few options to choose from. Which one would give me Froyo and is the simplest to do?
TIA

I would start slow. just rooting opens up a lot of options with market/google apps and overclocking that should keep you busy while you read up on the other options. I don't like running firmware from the sd card but thats just me. you can also dual boot from internal memory which doesn't wipe your stock rom either.
what ever you do you can always go back to bone stock easily so don't worry about that.
Root it. I got mine 2 weeks ago... I'm not a software guy, I don't know any programming languages, and I've never rooted anything before (Nexus One is still plain vanilla) I tried Nookie Froyo and Honeycomb off of the SD card, but they weren't really all that functional. Neat, yes, but not much more than a novelty.
I went the AutoNooter route 2 days ago, and things are looking good. Working Youtube, Gmail, and other apps.

What was not functional about them? Also what is the downside of loading off of the SD card as opposed to internal memory, I mean other than having to purchase a large SD card I suppose?
I'm a complete 0 when it comes to Android.
Bought mine this morning, did the Nookie Froyo on the sdcard to run android, and it works wonderful! I bought it specifically to root. 249 for an android tablet? Why not!

Got to have something to do on Sunday!
What runs smoother? Froyo on SD or AutoNooter?
I'm buying a Nook today and going to root it and make it an Android tablet but there's sooooo many threads out there about this (and being updated every second), so I just wanted to know the basic - which is faster?
I don't like a choppy, sluggish OS...
Root it now. It is not much of a big deal anyway. You can return to stock in minutes if you like. I don't think that we have to wait for something better from B & N, even if they update to 2.2 (i don't think they would...). They don't want to sell a tablet but an e-reader with some extra capability( and they did it well), you can read your books, surf the net, listen to music, play videos.
They already announced bandmaster will release a version of honeycomb in the future.

Is Flash Working Yet??

So what's the story on a rooted NC running/installing flash? Is it working yet?
Also on the topic of the browser, I've seen a lot of NC's running the browser but loading mobile sites. Is it possible to modify a file like on the GTablet to make it the website think it's a PC? I believe it's in the forum here for the GTablet about getting Netflix/Fancast/Hulu to work.
I was under the impression I could root the NC and have a full blown tablet but I'm thinking I might have jumped the gun on my ebay purchase ($50 off).
In order to run flash, you need either Nookie Froyo (Android 2.2), HC builds, or CM7. Flash is not supported on the device with stock rooted software, as Flash support was not introduced until Android 2.2, and the stock version is Android 2.1 (Eclair). You can run Nookie Froyo from an SD card and access flash content.

Throw Nookie Froyo on there and you have a Flash enabled tablet.
Check your browser settings some can turn off mobile sites. Dolphin I believe is one of them.
CM7 has a glitchie flash right now. I have head Froyo handles it pretty well. Everything takes a little time.

CM7 runs flash alright on my nook. I still use tubemate and rockplayer, though.
But if I run anything other than rooted stock I'll lose the stock b&n book app and the share/lend and public library feature right?
Yes, that's true. Check out the dual boot thread or running froyo or CM7 off a uSD card to avoid losing your stock setup.

Any of the uSD (sdcard versions) keeps you stock firmware. Shut down remove the sdcard boot up to a "standard" NC. I believe you can do what you want through the Nook app also, from the market.

Seems pretty good go me. I heard the nook app doesn't do magazines and isn't as robust. Although I still would like to try both myself and see what I like. Not sure how I feel about digital magazines yet aside from their lower price. The public library feature has me most concerned. I will be reading on this thing after all...
Nook is pretty bullet proof, a little reading on the dev forum will save a lot of frustration. If all else fails there are recovery threads that can revive any "brick" issue. The first day I had my wifes I killed it and revived it three times. But I learned a lot. I keep a sdcard with recovery files near by, I like to push the limits.
Take a look at this

Yes and No. Flash 10.1 works on 2.2 but now with 10.2 out it because somewhat useless. I don't think any tablet can run Flash 10.2 yet, including the Xoom.
On nookie froyo, does it play flash content from websites fine? I was planning to watch videos/ anime etc
Dear all,
I've searched for days but I still cannot run flash on my nook color (using nookie froyo 0.6.8) with neither dolphin nor browser although flash player has already been installed in this rom.
Can anybody help me?

If you are running the SD card image remove the Adobe flash that was installed, then re-download from the market. that work for me.
Thanks, I'll when I come back home today. However, I intend to update to Phiremod because I have problem with booting NC with uSD card inside (I formatted the card inside Froyo after flashing the eMMC).

kayak, most libraries lend through Adobe digital editions software. you download it to your pc, which then "authenticates" the supported device, of which stock NC is one. However, the Aldiko e-reader app also supports digital editions, so even if you lose the NC support, you can (most likely) still borrow through aldiko. In this case, the PC version will authenticate the app on the device, rather than the device itself.
In any case, this is what I am going to be putting in place...
edit:
I can confirm that aldiko does indeed work just fine with ADE, and in fact better than ADE itself with the nook! (had license-access issues with the adobe software, but aldiko picked it up just fine). aldiko also seems to be a much better reading app than stock nook reader as well. I have a new favorite.

childs gift and rooting

i purchased 2 nook tablets for an 8 and 11 year old. im debating whether to not root it because i think it wil be easier for them to follow interface and the only downside i see is having to pay for apps that may be free on amazon or play store. can i have some input here? is there a super easy rooted rom that a child can follow? or are there many free aps if i just keep it as an out of box nook. thanks so much guys
Rooting by someone()'s All-in-one at the Nook HD, HD+ General section works great for me as it is very easy. The HD+ still works like the original and at the same time can use apps from Play Store (or side load). Only if you want B&N updates it could mean losing your root, but as someone() disabled automatic updates you can wait with updating until others have checked the effects of the updates.
Getting ADB working is the most difficult part. I already had a so called 8bootloop, restoring the original software after experimenting a bit too much, but within half an hour I got it all working again. B&N profiles were updated after logging in, even the profile I already made for my daughter was available. Just my view, more experience users may correct me.

If all you are looking for is apps, you can side load without rooting, just load on your machine then adb install. I find s lot of free apps don't even show up for tablet, but I copy over from my phone and adb install them, usually without problem
Ps, you can also load a different launcher of course....

Yep we are all hd folk here, can't speak to the tablet, but so far the ota hasn't borked us. And once adb is working, you can side load anything as long as it doesn't touch /system. Including a launcher which is highly recommended since the b&n launcher won't show all the apps easily.

If you can get ADB working on your nook tablet you should be able to sideload apps without rooting. And they should be safe if B&N sends an update to the ROM. But you might get better advice by posting in the Nook Tablet forum. Users there know more about the Tablet.
