Why do i get a tar file instead of a img file - Nook Color General

Why do i get a .tar file instead of a .img file when unzipping tar.gz files
I've tried winraw and bitzipper run as admin or not
The files I'm trying to unzip are these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870
I've been browsing these forums all day trying to find someone thats had the same problem, guess I'm out of my league here
Thanks in advance

*.tar.gz files are. Zipped (the .gz) and Tar'd so it's a 2 step process.
Basically TAR is a grouping of the files and GZ is the compression.
Check out 7-zip:
http://www.7-zip.org/
Un-Gzip the file you have a *.tar file. Un-Tar the file and you have all the files.

YES! Thanks
I had tried to winrar and bitzipper them twice but the file was useless
But with 7-zip Ive got a img. file, seems like all the instructions I've been following said uncompress but I guess the assume that you know to do both
Now I can get on with my next nightmare getting this NC back to stock
Thank you

Convert Heimdall to Odin

IS there a way to convert a Heimdall package to ODIN package?
Anyone please. I haven't found anything on Google
If you have 7zip, I believe so.
Try this - take a Heimdall one-click and unzip it to a directory. 7zip should be able to unzip the .jar file.
Once it's unzipped, go to /com/AdamOutler/HeimdallOneClick/resources/ROMPackage. You'll see a HeimdallPackage.tar.gz file. Unzip that to a directory.
Then, open that directory and unzip the HeimdallPackage.tar file to a directory.
Once you've done that, you should have a directory with the files you're looking for. In my case, I have a .pit file, a dbata.rfs file, a factoryfs.rfs file, a cache.rfs file, and a zImage file.
I think Odin will be able to handle those.
Can we do Odin to Heimdall?

I unzipped the Apex 12.4 Heimdall package using WinRAR, and only thing I see in there that screams ROM at me is a apex.system.ext4 with a size of around 280MB. The other stuff are kernels, and boot stuff.
To make an Odin flashable file, you will need a Linux machine or Cygwin for Windows machines. Do a Google search for "How to make an Odin flashable rom" by Darkyy

You need Cygwin to pull the files from phone not to make the ODIN .tar. Try to open that .ext4 file with 7 zip see if you can see other files in it. But That Apex file is off so you're going to have to do it with Cygwin or a linux OS (VM or similar would work) OR you can get Heimdall to work lol. Seems alot easier to get Heimdall to work than go through the trouble, Unless its for learning purpose.

Don't know about using cygwin to pull files from phone. I always use adb. Then i use cygwin to make my tar.md5 file.
It is much easier to make a flash package for Heimdall than Odin, in my opinion.
Did you find that thread by darkyy?

Now you are right. But I've been able to create .tar with a zipping program. I would need my pc to tell you exactly the method. But yes I learned with darkky' post.

Using 7zip to unzip the .ext4 file, I see the following:
assets folder
META-INF folder
res folder
AndroidManifest.xml
resources.arsc
Looks like I'll have to Heimdall...

Rooting Tab A SM-P555 - correct .tar file?

Hi, I downloaded the zip folder: sm-t550_p550_p555_cf-autoroot. When I open it there is no .tar file, only cache.img.ext4 and recovery.img. I've rooted several times before and have normally had no issues following the xda links to the .tar files.
Sorry if I'm being a dumbo, help appreciated.
Root TAB A
Don't unzip or open. Copy for ur SD or internal. After, flash the zip (sm-t550_p550_p555_cf-autoroot) with TWRP. And VoilĂ ! I hope I helped you :good:

Is .tar.md5 the same as .img.tar?

So I tried to install Magisk via patching my boot image, but it failed, and I know from the instructions that I need my stock image rom to be a .img.tar if I want to flash through ODIN. However my stock boot image is a .tar.md5, and even trying to research the issue I just end up getting more confused. Does the rom need to end in .img? Can I convert/extract my .tar.md5 to an .img.tar(.md5?)? Is a .tar.md5 the same as a .tar (the hashing bit I understand) so that whenever someone refers to a .tar, either a .tar or a .tar.md5 is acceptable?
These Linux extensions driving me crazy and I really can't figure out what's what. It might be useful for the main Magisk thread to have a section that explains this kind of basic stuff for the less-savvy. If someone could straighten me out I would be highly appreciative, thanks in advance!
.tar.md5 is a text file which contains hash of the original file. It is used to check the integrity of files.
Compare the sizes of .tar and .tar.md5 files.
Sorry @Shished that has really not helped me at all, I'm just as confused as ever. Thank you for trying though. What is "the original file"? What am I comparing, should I have some other kind of file here? Can I get the original file out of my .tar.md5? I have one file that I believe is a factory boot image and it's a .tar.md5. Believe me when I say I am a complete noob on this and I need the basics of the basics.
Edit: The file originally came as a zip, is THAT the original file?

.tar is the compression used for Samsung. If you extract the .tar, you will find an .img in it. A .tar.md5 is just the .tar with the hash file appended.

Does it mean that .img file can always be extracted from a .tar or .tar.md5 file?

There will likely be several .img files inside of it.

magisk manager gives me a file named magisk_patched.img, but I need a tar file instea

I need a tar file because ODIN doesn't accept img files. Magisk used to be able to give a tar file, what happened?
As long as I'm unable to figure out how to make this work, rooting my device will be impossible. I don't want to give up now, not after getting through so many headaches...
Did you feed it a tar file? If you do it should give a tar file as output.

That's the problem, I only have a .img file, and have no idea how to turn it into a .tar file, or how to get one from my firmware. There are plenty of guides around on how to convert .img into .tar, but I don't know whether they work for this purpose. I would appreciate some guidance here.

What error are you getting, maybe you need to download the ROM again as it's become corrupted when you downloaded it the first time.
If using 7zip you'll need to extract it twice. The first time uncompresses the file, after which you should have a single file. Sometimes this file won't have a file extension, so in this case rename it and add .tar on to the end. This is now an uncompressed archive file, so open it up in 7zip and extract the contents. After this you should have a folder containing some .bat files and another folder which contains a lot of image files. It is this top level folder you need to select in the Mi Flash Tool.
