Hello,
I would like to follow the procedure for customizing the splash screen as described here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Trinity_SplashScreen
At first, I didn't know where to get the program ROMUpgradeUt.exe, then I found (quite difficultly - sometimes the obvious for one is so obfuscated for the other one) that is contained in any ROM image. And that any ROM image is an archive. Well, I downloaded 2 Dopod ROM images, renamed them from .exe into .zip (and .rar) , but neither WinZIP, nor WinRAR is able to open the archive.
I remember doing it, could you please help with this issue ?
If you have any other advice on how to customize the splash screen(s), I would be very grateful.
Thank you all.
Please, could somebody help me with this ?
It is not clear what you want!
You should not be renaming any .exe files to .zip or .rar.
Try right clicking on the .exe file (dopod rom downloaded) and if you have winzip installed you will have a winzip menu in the context sensitive menu. - Choose Extract to - and extract the contents of the .exe to a folder.
You also will have extract to as an option on your right click menu if you have 7-zip (free) installed.
Once you extract the ROM you will have all the ROM and upgrade files. You can Now delete the .nbh file (the ROM) and replace it with the splash ROM .nbh file that you created using the instructions that you are following. (Use the same file name to be sure).
Now use the RUUtility.exe to flash your splash
Hi, thanks for the reply. I remember that last time I did the same operation I had to rename the file. I might be wrong. Anyhow, I'll try to do as you said.
Thanks again.
i can flash all nbh files.. but some of u chefs make 7z files. how do u flash these
You don't.
.7z is a compressed archive, like a .zip or .rar. You need to unpack it on your PC, and the .nbh is inside.
If you have WinZip or WinRAR on your PC, they should automatically open the archive when you click on it. If you don't have one of those, then look for a free .7z utility. I don't use any free ones, so I can't see which one is the best.
As already mentioned it's a compressed archive
Not ROM Development on that note thread closed.
recently i tried to replace the kernel that came with a version of Phoenix with an updated kernel before flashing, but it did not work out. I simply extracted the original, replaced the zimage, and created a new zip file with the new kernel in the rom, using windows to package the zip. is this what i should do, or is it more complex than this? the flash failed.
Don't extract the rom zip. Use 7zip or similar and open archive, delete the zimage then drag the other kernel zimage in there. Or just flash the rom as is and then flash the kernel.

thanks! that makes sense. can i just do what you said using windows explorer?
7zip is free and handles many more file extension types.
Install it then right click on the file in windows explorer, select 7 zip, then open archive. This allows you to make changes without actually extracting the entire file.

yes i know, but when just dealing with a zip file, can i use windows explorer to delete contents inside the zip and replace them?
You are too quick....edited my post above

so when i double click on a zip file in windows explorer, and it opens it as if it were just another folder, can i not replace stuff directly in windows explorer where im at?
That extracts everything and you may have issues after zipping it back up

in windows explorer, you can right click and select extract files, but when you double click the zip it appears that it is allowing you to edit the contents without completely unzipping. am i wrong in thinking this?
Perhaps you can do it that way......i just always used 7zip. You will have to try it and see.

alright, thanks bud =D
I am using winzip. When I right click the zip file it gives me the option to "open" with winzip. When I do it shows me files like windows does. So my question is can I use winzip to replace the file and then close it?
winzip works as well
Why do i get a .tar file instead of a .img file when unzipping tar.gz files
I've tried winraw and bitzipper run as admin or not
The files I'm trying to unzip are these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870
I've been browsing these forums all day trying to find someone thats had the same problem, guess I'm out of my league here
Thanks in advance
*.tar.gz files are. Zipped (the .gz) and Tar'd so it's a 2 step process.
Basically TAR is a grouping of the files and GZ is the compression.
Check out 7-zip:
http://www.7-zip.org/
Un-Gzip the file you have a *.tar file. Un-Tar the file and you have all the files.
YES! Thanks
I had tried to winrar and bitzipper them twice but the file was useless
But with 7-zip Ive got a img. file, seems like all the instructions I've been following said uncompress but I guess the assume that you know to do both
Now I can get on with my next nightmare getting this NC back to stock
Thank you
I have the stock firmware for my device (a Galaxy J6). I've downloaded it from sammobile, and it's in a zip file. Supposedly, all I need to do is extract this file with an extraction program like winrar and presto, I should have the necessary boot.img. But all I get are these useless .md5 files. What is going on? Did I misinterpret something?
More than anything, I would just like it if someone finally just explained to me what the hell I'm supposed to do. The Magisk installation guide doesn't even go into detail about how to get a boot.img, it just assumes you have it. It's infuriating.

If it's an OTA full upgrade there should be a file named payload.bin.
You need to unpack it to get the img files. Do it using this tool:

Um, when I tried downloading your program, the page said there were no mirrors found.
Also, there doesn't appear to be any payload.bin file on the zip, just md5 files. And it's been that way for every j6 firmware I've downloaded in the past.
Maybe you should try downloading the firmware from sammobile and seeing whether you can extract boot.img from it?

You might need to make a sammobile account if you don't have one already. Good luck!

I downloaded a random J6 firmware in another site.
You have to use 7zip software, it's free, much better than WinRar and supports tons of compression formats. Do these steps with 7zip:
-Unpack zip file.
-Rename the "*.tar.md5" to "*.tar".
-Open the ".tar" file and unpack "boot.img.lz4".
-Unpack "boot.img.lz4" file.
-It's done, you now have the "boot.img" file you were looking for

Sorry for the late reply. I did it. I found the boot.img file! I'll be using it shortly.

My Friend
I have same problem above: find boot.img of my device ( SM-G532MT).
I have a firmware downloaded from firmware.mobi. Works fine.
But, when decompressed, shows only the archives for instalation for Odin ( CSC, AP, etc... ). No boot.img under other format.

forgive me about that too
Samsung devices by default don't have .img ...
usually stockrom come as .zip then you need to extract it (use 7zip since winrar is not capable of extracting .lz4)
-Rename the "AP_xxx.tar.md5" to "AP_xxx.tar". <~ any similar file with AP from the start
-Open the "AP_xxx..tar" file and if you see boot.img extract "AP_xxx..tar" then grab boot.img it's done, you now have the "boot.img" file you were looking for
-some device have "boot.img.lz4" file. <~ use 7zip again to extract .lz4 file then grab boot.img it's done, you now have the "boot.img" file you were looking for
also it is stupid to grab your boot.img when you are Samsung since Odin only accept .md5 format (does Samsung have access to fastboot or they are stuck using Odin idk never has Samsung phone lmao)
also i forgot to say that you can actually patch "AP_xxx.tar" via Magisk itself so less work
For anyone else having trouble getting the boot.img, but on a custom recovery:
1. Go to recovery
2. Open recovery terminal
3. Enter:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/boot of=/sdcard/boot.img
4. Press enter to confirm the command
5. Reboot to system
The boot.img is now on your SD card.
