[Q] Default Contact Info Backup - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I restore using TiBu using "restore missing apps + all system data", it doesn't restore my contacts' default info. I am backing up using the "backup all user apps + system data" batch. Is there something else I should be backing up?

When reinstalling do not choose system data just re install apps and data not system

Restart your phone after restoring to get your contacts and texts to show up.

If I'm understanding you correctly just back them all up to google.

Here's what I do, after I'm done with titanium backup I go back into the folder and search for contacts. Copy everything that comes up from the search and delete the rest. Paste the contacts that u copied back into the TI backup folder which now should be empty. Go back into titanium backup on the phone and reload. You will probably need to do a reboot afterwords but that should get all your contacts back.

All of my contacts are restored, that's not the problem. The defaults are not restored. For example, if I have an office number, a fax number and a mobile number stored for a contact and I set the mobile number as default before backing up, after I restore it no longer has a default (and usually tries calling the fax number).
Not sure if this matters, but I have contacts syncing from Google, a corporate account and Facebook.

Problem with contacts

I'm not a fan of synching contacts to the cloud. I've only tried Google as I accidentally forgot to disable it. I have around 200+ contacts locally (phone only) . But when I export it to sd for backup, it's synching 800+. I'm guessing somewhere, either Facebook, Skype or viber copied some data over (my fault maybe) .
Is there a way I coul remove all the synched data and just leave the local contacts?

I'm not sure what your question is, if you want to remove contacts from your backup before importing, or if you want to remove contacts from gmail, or just prevent then showing on your phone, so here are a couple of answers.
To only display locally stored contacts enter the contacts app, press menu, Display Options (may have to select "more..." first) and tick the boxes for what kind of contacts you want to display. (Local=PC Suite)
To remove contacts from the exported file just edit it in a proper editor like notepad++ or notepad2, it's a regular text-file.
To prevent the phone from syncing contacts enter Settings/Accounts and Sync., enter each type of account and untick contacts.
To delete contacts in the cloud the easiest way is to log on to the service, i.e gmail/facebook/skype/twitter on a computer and delete them from there, alternatively select to only display that service's contacts on your phone, then delete them all one by one (while sync. is still on).
I was looking for a way to prevent non-local contacts into the Vcf file.
I'll go with editing the vcf and just restore from there. Thanks

Hi, since i have a question about "contacts" i thought i should just use this thread instead of making a new one.
All my contacts are saved on my SIM card but when i put my SIM in my phone, go to Contacts > Import from SIM then it says "No contacts on your SIM card". Is there a way to get my contacts to show up or will i have to add them all again . Thanks.

How are your contacts backed up? If you go to manage applications, clear cache and data for contacts and contacts storage, then resync.

Back Ups

Back in the day when I had windows mobile, I had a program that synced my text messages, picture mail (sprint mms) and call logs to Outlook. When I upgraded to Outlook 2007 and this app ceased to function, I found a backup program that I could schedule to run each night that would backup these items to the SD card, retaining 3 days worth of backups on the card. If I forgot to restore them when I wiped, no problem the backup program could add only the new or missing ones back to the device. I would like to find a way to backup the same way with Android, does anyone know of anything like this for Android? :cyclops:

for contacts and pics you can sync with your google account.
For messages you can use sms backup & restore.
I think there is no way to sync with outlook atm.

Yes you can set schedule backup to SD card for SMS, MMS, and call log(and much more) with Titanium backup, with flexibility to select frequency as well number of backup.
Read 'How to keep device backup up-to-date' on my signature.
dr. ketan, does Titanium Backup offer the flexibility to backup the entire phone (ROM, application programs, data, pictures, videos, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your reply.
No, TB can't backup ROM/Kernel or Pictures/Video.. TB can backup application(system and user) and data of application. It needs root to backup system app and data of app(syst/user)
ROM/Kernel can be backup by Nandroid.
Use sms backup+ to backup & restore all your messages, MMS, Contacts, Call logs to your Gmail account(s). It;s Freeware.

[Q] best non-root backup?

So my phone died and is now miraculously working. So now I am backing everything up in case it happens again.
Here's the thing. Google sync never works perfectly for me and the HTC backup doesn't either.
I've tried MyBackup in the past but whenever I used it it would mess up the contacts. It backed them all up but upon restoring each entry of a contact (i.e. home phone, mobile home, notes, etc.) became a new contact with that name. So instead of having one Bob in my contact list I would have six bobs, one with the cell number, another with an email, and so on.
I was wondering what backup apps you guys could recommend that restore the contacts properly. I only care about the contacts. MyBackup works well with SMS and call logs so if need be I can use different apps for different backups and what I need now is a good contact solution.
Thanks
Helium from Clockworkmod. Its the best method of backup for non rooted users IMHO. https://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
I have never experienced a problem restoring my Google account contacts, I take it you have removed the account and tried to set it up again to see if it will let you save the contacts. You can verify that they are saved if you log onto gmail when using a browser.

Thanks for the suggestion but trying out the free one it backs up apps but the people/contacts app doesn't show up in the list meaning it doesn't do what I need...

missing contacts

Any idea how to get back one of my contacts (there might be more) that just vanished the other day?
log on to contacts.google.com, from there you can restore previous versions of your contacts, make backup of current ones and export them too.
Ta. Will try that. Syncing my contacts didn't restore it.

Syncing doesn't restore contacts. It just sync it with Google servers and updates it as per changes on your phone.

Still don't understand why it disapeard
The usual explanation for contacts vanishing usually is when user deletes a sync service like an Exchange/Office 365 account and one or a couple of contacts exist in this realm making you "lose" them when account is no longer in the phone. But if the contacts where Google contacts that vanished it does sound strange to me if the vanish without some app interfering with these contacts, maybe..
It was a Google contact so no. Have reimported him now.
You can try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vjayraj.deletedcontacts it worked for me in the situation that i deleted a contact then wanted to restore it
