Hi everyone,
I have Galaxy S GT-i9000, purchased on November 2010. From last one month i am having lots of problem with my Galaxy S. There is serious lagging and freezing when typing or swapping between home screens or using wake up/sleep button. Even when you slide down the status bar, ending call, going from call log to keypad...every where !!
I have formatted the deice memory twice and a complete internal memory format once, still having a problem after few days of use.
Yesterday itself i have formatted completely but at the moment i restore all my messages, contacts and apps ...it starts lagging
Earlier i had more than 200 apps including heavy 3d games which comes to 15 menu pages but it was not lagging this much, now i have just 4 games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, my current menu pages are 7.
Apart from this there is a common problem with this device since Android 2.1, that is, sometimes it takes approx 15-20 sec to open app like messaging or setting or any other app. I have also attached a pic naming "Common problem when switching or opening new app since Android 2.1.JPG" to show how it looks like.
I have also attached few pics so that you can get good idea.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ee2w988b6wi1q
In my Messaging i have 130 conversations and in 5-6 friends contact i have more than 100 messages. All together more than 2000 messages. So, having so many messages will affect the speed ??? (I am really not sure about this because my previous phone i900 omnia ,a windows phone with 256ram and 800Mhz speed could handle it perfectly)
Best Regards
One more thing...
After Freezing, a message comes on screen "(Galaxy S) - installing native liabraries"
What firmware do you use now?
**DamianGTO Ultimate kernel.1200MHZ. 350MB Ram. 600HZ. all ext2. Steam Rom. Js5**

Sounds like poweramp to me...
I can see that once in a week, but no lagg comes with it... But you can try to uninstall, maybe it makes a big difference for you..
Official Firmware : 2.2
Baseband version : I9000DDJP2
Build no : FROYO.DDJP6
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9
[email protected]#1
@jaapschaap: I am using poweramp for 3 months now but it never gave me this lagging problem, i think there is some different issue !!
Issue solved, it was due to official samsung firmware 2.2. I degraded to 2.1 and it was smooth again, now running custom rom 4.2.
Thank you.

Hi guys, I got my milestone for 2-3 weeks now. At first I didn't have redraws but I just can't escape them now
Using launcher pro or adw doesn't change anyhing.
I tried to check the stay in memory thing but it still get killed and it redraws.
My main concern is for sms and calls. During the redraw I don't get notifications and phone function is too slow to come.
I never had this problem with my hero...
I overclocked to 1ghz 60 fev but it's the same with and without.
My rom is the lastest cyanogenmod 6.1
I tried changing local.prop with ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 but it sounded like Home wasn't dying but messaging was.
I have exactly 132 applications.
Homes and vital apps like astro or setcpu etc ... are in internal memory.
I tried changing the VM size to 32 by using cyanogenmod (its 32 by default)
and by openrecovery but it doesnt change anything.
I tried to uninstall adw leaving only launcher pro but is was the same.
Maybe I am missing some information ?
It's just awful, just checking my messages with handcent results with a redraw. (it isn't occuring now, maybe is it because widgets are not put back?)
Does anybody have a solution?
I just wiped my data in order to check with a brand new partition but it's the same.
Maybe there is a magic combinaison with the option to keep home in ram of cyanogenmod and the one of the homes ?
I don't know but I just can't operate my milestone normally.
If anybody has an idea or whatever.. just help me
maybe it's cuz I have 7 screens ? Oh come on I live that way for a long time when I used sense ^^
Had the problem before.
First thing I did was setting LP memory usage settings well: cache at light & light preset. +clear caches on exit. 'Keep in memory' in LP is checked.
in CM performace settings I have only 'lock home in memory' checked. VM heap size is deault (32)
ADW uninstalled. Did you check if you have any useless processes running in background?
yup Im using advanced task killer.
I just tried the command again and it seems to work.
I will test more ...
Thank's
Bump, I managed to stop redraws by setting memory usage preset to moderate, not checking the prevent force-closes . I just checked the keep in memory in the general section.
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 is ON but without the "keep in memory" messages die, and same for phone
I don't have any more redraws but I can't play some games like angry birds !!
Games eating too much memory just can't manage to load completly.
Does anybody here manages to load angry bird or intense eating game with no redraws ??
I mean if I don't check the keep in memory sending a message or calling someone redraws ... It's unbearable.
BTW, I activated the
Are 7 screens too much for this phone .
Damn my hero just worked way better wtf !!!
Any idea guys ?
:'(
If anybody have 7 screens or less and doesn't have any redraw please tell me :'(
bu-bump anyone guys ?
how much free memory is it displayed in running services? Launcherpro used to redraw on me like 65000 times a minute. you just have to remove all those services by uninstalling the crap out of your phone and leaving some free memory and space on internal storage, and you should have less redraws.
I believe these are problems with the leaked 2.2.1 kernel because the phone was behaving better on eclair
Is this really the decision we have to make?
V2.1
Pro
Better battery life
More stable
Con
Camera picture shifted by a pixel resulting in a line down the side.
Slower
Stuck with old 2.1 applications
V2.2
Pro
Faster
Newest applications such as GMail are much more usable, there are also new applications for 2.2+ only
Camera pictures turn out correctly
Con
Camera application crashes unexpectedly
General instability of the phone and its applications
Terrible battery life (at least 50% less on a good day)
ps. if any of these can be resolved please let me know. If you have anything to add to the list, also let me know. I've been switching back and forth between the two trying to figure out which I like more, but I find either way I'm terribly annoyed by something.
I disagree with the cons of v2.2.1, the camera works perfect, no instability and the battery lasts 1 1 / 2 to 2 days

+1, And i think that the battery drain deppends of the OC, and the care of the usser.
3 days with out changer with and extremly care and oc.
I see 2.1 is more stable and faster than 2.2
because and this is happened with me
apps installed in 2.1 are the same in 2.2
but 2.2 needs more time to open the desktop and the apps menu
and sometimes appear ( problem loading widget ) so i need to reload the widget
and for that reason I'm gonna stay on 2.1 because I'm tired with 2.2
notice\ If u have any solution for the problem mentioned above please

1 1/2 to 2 days... hmm. I never make it 48 hours on 2.2.. 36 with minor usage. But 2.1 with the same usage I usually make 3 days at least.

Fair enough, but I make 3 days normally on 2.1 with mine over-clocked to 1.1GHz. At least from what I remember. I have recently gone back to 2.1 and will report back if I'm thinking of 800 MHz and got confused.
On 2.2, with 700 Mhz I never lasted much more then 36 hours, so either way I feel 2.1 is doing much better.
What mod do you guys use? or just the un-modded beta kernel?

Maybe I'm missing something but the GMail app, for one, doesn't seem to be updated on 2.1? I can't even copy/paste, I don't have the new header, etc. Can anyone correct me on this if I'm wrong?
2.1 is definately more stable.. however faster I'd say I agree with you if you install JIT beta and overclock it (which is fine, considering it still runs longer for meoverclocked than the 2.2 kernel) but without those mods its a lot more laggy for the UI.
EDIT: Apologies, I just noticed the multi-quote button. Next time I promise not to spam post.
2.1 cons: can't upload directly from website. eg, imageshack. Don't have flash support on website. Apps2sd need tedious step to install.
2.2 cons: stock camera doesn't support widescreen. Wifi instability.
Lets see how official 2.2 perform.
No Milestone camera application supports widescreen.
The stock Motorola Camera has only a crop mode that strips the top and bottom parts of the picture (lowering its resolution) that is called "widescreen"...
Also, there's no 2.2 for Milestone yet, there is only an early 2.2 beta firmware available (and there are also 2.2 ROMs that depend on components - e.g. kernel, gsm/umts stuff etc. - extracted from the early beta, which makes them beta too).
So no fair comparison is possible at this moment.
I have to add that the motorola usb networking driver is rock solid on 2.2 unlike the one from 2.1 that hangs under heavy network traffic.
This is impacts the reliability of USB tethering.

Hi ,
I am new to galaxy S , but i have I9000 for some time now .
From the task manager I see the following Mem usage :
206/306 MB is taken .
after i clear all i have around 150MB .
is that what you guys have ? or i have a mem hug OS ?
also , i have small delays every time i open my keyboard , so i wanted to make my device a bit faster .
ideas ?
Mine's the same if i close everything its about 140mb but generally runs about 200.
well ,
i dont mind the amount it takes , but i figured that this must be what causing small delays when i want to type SMS .
i press on the message and than until the keyboard writes the first letter , there is a glitch of delay , and in the IPhone of my friend , there is no such thing.
so i figured , this must be something like that cause my phone is clearly better !
when an application it's not active, it resides on the memory. The more application you have run or activate the first time, the higher this memory usage will be.
However, that should not slow the system down as Android OS will manage the memory well - so when an active application requires more memory, it'll throw away those that are no longer needed.
@idandush: what ROM do you use? i'm using Darky's and there's no such delay when typing (but there's a slight delay when a keyboard open up - probably because i'm using Go SMS application as well as "gingerbread" keyboard - both are non-stock).
Still - hate to admit --- iPhone is smoother in comparison with my Galaxy S.
Still - hate to admit --- iPhone is smoother in comparison with my Galaxy S.
Smoother than some but not all SGS .
jje
your right , android probably handle the memory fine.
maybe its the fact i use simpleKeyboard and not a stock keyboard . but each time i open the keyboard i have small delay which annoy me .
After flashing a rom onto my LG P990 it works flawlessly-everything is nuttery smooth, fast and reliable but after some uptime and few days of using it suddenly starts to lag. It really pisses me off since P990 is quite powerfull when it comes to specs but my friends Galaxy S somehow maintains it's performance.
So the question is how to make sure that my phone will not reduce it's performance so drastically over time?
I'm runnig latest Temasek's KANG and ETaNa's latest beta kernel with 1,4GHz OC.
Do you have alot of apps installed?
Try to see how much RAM usage you have on boot and after it starts to drop performance.
Yeah I read somewhere that there is a memory leak problem with the o2x...restart your phone once in 3 days..things should be fine
Rebooting doesn't help. If it did I would assume that it's simply because an app/apps is causing the drop and then I would try to find it. I do have a lot of apps on my phone but most of them shouldn't be running by themselves in the backgroud (mostly games and such).
I have same problem (on ICS ROMs). After flash, everything is fast, after few days....I have to wait for call for 30 sec....horrible...
I have noticed that problem witch made me a flashaholic .. you could begin with deleting facebook app, messenger and google plus (drainers) then dl rom manager and set in on hard gaming , worked ok for me
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app
Also I have a major USB issue. Almost always after turning off storage mode the phone just hangs and I have to remove the battery to restart it. Sometimes it even reboots by itself while transfering files.
Memory leak... If this problem annoys you flash a stock froyo rom or cm based rom..
Have been using CM7 for probably 12 months, but the performance in the last few weeks seems to have got much worse....
i think it could be a baseband issue...I am ...during the verification of the existing problem ...
Since rebooting and installing the tweakaio.zip with lagfree patch for my kernel everything seems better. Not freshly-flashed good but much better.
I don't have any problems with my O2X. It runs buttery-smooth even after two weeks without rebooting. However, the internal IO does get pretty slow after a while. It's nothing too dramatic though.
Heres my recommendation;
Latest Temasek ROM & Kernel
Use the built-in ramhack (this really helps alot!)
Using TitaniumBackup, freeze un-needed apps or uninstall them (be careful with this, make backups. This is mainly meant for system apps that you don't need, i.e. Car Home so they won't fill up your RAM unnecessarily)
Using Autorun Manager just prevent most apps from auto-starting themselves.
Optional; let a task manager kill apps for you periodically. I always read that it's not good to use task managers but I never seem to have any problems with them. I've got 200MB RAM free all the time, even after several days of usage. To prevent killing specific apps just add them to the ignore list of your task manager.
You could also use the lagfree + dalvik cache fix by tonyp and adjust the LMK values.
This setup is working perfectly fine for me, just try it out yourself.
Edit: I also have to note that I don't have many apps installed. Just the things that I really need such as AlarmDroid, the XDA Premium App (!), PimpMyCpu, etc.

Hey there, this problem might have been discussed before but I wasn't able to find it, so the problem is with ram usasage, I once went to the apps in settings and on the running apps I always see 250mb+ ram used by something, then I killed all the apps, but that just made a dliference of 50mb ram, It's real anoying because when I want to switch between apps it's slow and when I turn a browser back on after using aother app the page realoads which I guess wpuldn't happen with 300 mb ram, does anyone know the reason for this, I am currently running cm10.1.
Thanks!

Free RAM is useless. It just sits there sucking up power and being available in case you need it. It's pretty much a waste to have 300 MB of RAM and then only use 100 MB. Instead you should try to keep your RAM full at all times with the things you are likely to need in the near future. For example, if your phone is currently only using 20% of your RAM but already caches the browser in case you'll use it soon it will be faster to load the browser. If you decide to use the music player on the other hand the cached browser can be overwritten with the music player without requiring any additional time, so no harm is done.
Modern systems don't have "free" and "in use" RAM, they have "free" (wasted space), "in use" and "cached". You shouldn't look at the amount of free RAM but rather the amount of actually used RAM is a better indicator.
The reason you only gain 50 MB when you kill all apps is because only 50 MB will be actually in use by apps and all remaining unused space is used for caching things. If your phone is slow, this is not the cause of it. You may just have a slow phone or the ROM might be slow for some (other) reason.

yeah only 50mb is used to keep the apps running, but it probably takes up a whole lot more when using the apps, and this is a problem for me that it is slow to change between apps, and when I do change between the for example if I wanna text some one back while using a browser, once i turn the browser back on it restarts the page, and that didn't happen in my zte blade, unless I had some more apps running.
I wanna know what is using those 250+mb of ram!

see exchange service, any svn services n keep track of system usage. normally 100mb+ will be taken for ui, framework...etc.
but. eventhough u keep track of it,then slaughter it, it will come back to life n running, so i wouldnt recommend slaughtering system usage.
switching between app normally slow for full or stock rom. try find some debloated rom. it will be suitable for u if u wanna more free ram rather than liquidity.

I also observed some sluggishness after some time of usage. Sometimes the phone got totally unresponsive, not catching any push events (from buttons or screen), so that I couldn't even wake it after the screen timeout. I had to wait even few minutes before it was alive again.
Google Chrome was the most ram-eating app as far as I know.
Sometimes the best method is just restart your phone from time to time or even make a wipe - this is normal for all low-end android phones as they get sluggish after some time.
Long story short: I ended up buying a new phone with 2gb of RAM

I'm using CM10.1 RC5, kernel 3.0.76-gc0a8d45 [email protected] #1
I have same symptoms pawci0 and ltkipras mentioned.
But I don't want to buy a new phone...
The lack of memory is noticeable when I run Waze or maps . It just opens for a couple of minutes and closes by itself or rather hangs the entire device.
What should I do? Go for the CM10.1 stable, try a different ROM (i.e. Slim). Change kernels?
nope, waze doesnt use that much ram, try to fix permission first n clear cache in recovery
n try to use other kernel, mine ok with multitask, rather heavy with online games n hearing mp3 n receiving whatsapp, line n we chat at da same time
n try greenify app to control app thats always running.

Just try a other rom or kernel you would be amazed how lets say a change of kernel can speed things up. The point is everyone uses their phone differently different apps and things so you need to find the rom that suits you mostly.
