[Q] Newbie needs help upgrading i9000 using KIES

Sorry folks, tried reading the similar type threads and I'm missing something..

2.6.29
root SE-S603 #2 (removed at sign cause it comes up as external website-strange)
Build number

Firmware

Purchased thro' orange, and unlocked, don't think it's branded so someone may have updated it previously. (I bought phone ebay)
Using RegEdit

Tried changing to O2 etc using some of the key mentioned, using as follows
Connected phone, using Kies (Phone setting)
Opened KIES (on PC)
Tried upgrade, but it comes up with no upgrade possible

Version PDA:JM9 / PHONE: JM4 / CSC:JM1
reviewed orange website and it looks like it can be upgraded if you use Kies, so I'm not sure what I need to do... Don't want to root at moment, in case I brick it..

Hi Bill. I'm not familiar enough with Eclair ROM codes to be 100% sure but considering the phone came off eBay I would suggest that someone has manally flashed it to a non-standard ROM and this would be why Kies doesn't offer you an upgrade. Your options to fix this are (i) to fool Kies into thinking it's a standard version which will make it offer you the official Froyo update or (ii) join the the happy flasher crew (like me) and flash a newer ROM yourself with Odin or Hemidal (being a newbie I recommend you use Odin). Have a search in the SGS forums for info on both how to fool Kies and also how to flash ROMs with Odin. One word of warning, the v2.2.1 ROMS have a serious battery drain issue so it's best to flash a straight 2.2 ROM for now until Samsung release a 2.2.1 with this issue fixed.

I have tried and tried and tried again to get my sgs into download and recovery mode for ages now and its not haveing it at all, is there any other safe way to do this apart from the jig solution or kies way. i really really want to root my phone so i can have gingerbread on it.
Ps: i am useually pritty good on my phones but since i have moved to droid i think its a bit out of my league, so could someone please please help.

is your phone working at the moment ?
are you familiar with ADB ?
if so you can boot into download mode thru ADB and then you can apply the 3 button combo fix.

Android Debug Bridge, you have to have USB Debuggin enabled on the phone.
it allows you to perform commands similar to command prompt on a PC, you can make the phone do things without using it, like boot into download and recovery mode.
a little complicated, but many many guides around, also follow the link posted by rixsta and everything you need is on that thread,

i really really want to root my phone so i can have gingerbread on it.
We are waiting for Samsung to release Gingerbread > promised soon and i would in your shoes wait for the official release via Kies .
That could well cure your problems .

[Q] 2.3.3 via ODION - KIES "This device cannot be upgraded"

I uploaded the 2.3.3 firmware as per this post by Ramad - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901 using ODIN.
However KIES takes forever to connect to the phone if it connects at all, and gives me the following message "This device cannot be upgraded"... why dows KIES suck so much and are there any workarounds besides using ODIN?

Because you have updated to the latest firmware.
PS. I never use kies to upgrade my phone

You updated your phone through Odin using stock rom .
Kies does not work with stock roms it works with the network supplied roms .
Buy a O2 phone it has O2 firmware use Kies and it reads O2 product code hardware ID and firmware version and upgrades if their is a later firmware from O2 .
Stock rom does not match product codes hardware id and firmware codes = no upgrade .

Now that JVK is official, it can now be downloaded through Kies (yep you heard it right) reconnect again your phone and check the message. Last night I get that message. Now the message is "This is the latest firmware", it means Kies now recognize my F/W firmware and hence available for download
EDIT: I updated through ODIN a couple of months ago, was one of the first who flashed GB. Kies can still recognize my firmware

Well KIES is now recognizing my phone... after i rebooted my laptop. So i guess if someone is having problem, reboot your laptop and reconnect with KIES.

SOLVED: Kies does not detect firmware of Captivate I896

Kies 2.0 or 1.5 will not recognize the firmware of one of my Samsung Captivate I896 running Rogers Stock 2.1 or Rogers Stock 2.2 (Froyo).
Two computers installed with
Vista Home Premium (32bit)
Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit)
Problem with Kies 2.0 detecting firmware on Captivate:
Captivate: deselect debugging mode.
Computer: Start "Kies" application
Connect USB cable to computer and then to Captivate
Captivate: Select "Kies (Firmware Update)"
Computer: Kies on computer will recognize Captivate correctly showing "I896" correctly.
Computer: In "Current Firmware", nothing is shown or detected. Blank
Captivate Brief History:
THis phone has been rooted and flashed with custom ROMs many times
ie CM7, Continuum
Then back to non GB bootloaders using ODIN one-click (AT&T Stock 2.1)
used a master clear at one time in the ODIN one-click
then Rogers Stock 2.1 (I896UXJI2 TORONTO) via ODIN3 v.1.82.
also Rogers Stock 2.2 (I896UXJL1-stock) via ODIN3 v.1.82.
I have also used (heimdall-suite-1.3.0-win32) to flash (UXJL1 I897)
With Eclair - Rogers 2.1 Stock.
Is the product code correct?
Yes
With Stock 2.1 flashed on captivate.
Enter *2767*4387264636# in dialer.
Then there a line that says:

NO, The IMEI is still correct and has not changed.
Have you uninstalled Kies correctly?
When I uninstall Kies, I also use CCleaner to clean up the registry.

I had this problem for a while before I updated to froyo a few months ago. I ended up having to flash back to unrooted stock before I could update to Froyo through Kies. Have you tried unrooting?
I was a supporter of Kies for a long time, but it seems like it's only real usefulness is to update firmware. The set of apps that Samsung wraps up in Kies are not superior to the parallel Google Applications. I guess I'm just curious as to why you need to use Kies when there are so many better alternatives in regards to syncing contacts, apps and content.
Good luck to you. I'd try with a completely stock unrooted eclair.

I select, the Flash to Stock and it was a version that Kies 2.0 accepted (Eclair 2.1). Then you simply follow the instructions to upgrade to Froyo.

Are you running 2.1 or 2.2? If you've never rooted or installed another ROM and are having issues with Kies connecting, make sure that you install the specific driver package that kies is intended to run with. If you just plug in your phone and let Windows install the drivers automatically you may not get the results you are looking for.
There are many, many threads that address this specific issue if you do a quick search.

I am running 2.2 stock from Rogers, but after rooted and flashing CM7. I went back to stock using a guide from XDA somewhere. Drivers are all installed.
Kies can see the phone, but it cannot detect the firmware.

This works perfectly. The other versions out there don't set the csc properly so kies wont touch it. This worked like a champ. Download, install. Flash to stock, follow directions. Then boot up kies, connect usb, hit kies button and it will prompt for the upgrade

Did that bring you back to stock 2.1 or 2.2? if it brought you to 2.1 when you went into kies did it flash you to 2.2 or 2.3? if it brought you to 2.2 did you have to unplug it and then plug it back into kies to get 2.3?

[Q] Updating to JellyBean via Kies / PC Odin / CWM

I have a GT-N7000 Galaxy Note which I won in a competition in the UK from Samsung, so it was already unlocked when I got it and can put in any SIM Card I want into it.
It originally came with Gingerbread - I've updated so that the phone is now rooted and currently has android 4.0.4
I want to upgrade to Jellybean but I'm confused by all the various ways there seem to be to update it.
At present I have totally reset the phone and installed Kies on my PC (windows 7 32bit)
When I connect the phone Kies says there is an upgrade
CURRENT FIRMWARE VERSION : PDA:LRQ / PHONE:LRK / CSC:LRQ(DBT)
LATEST FIRMWARE VERSION: PDA:LSZ / PHONE:LSO / CSC:LSZ(DBT)
I'm kinda scared to do an official firmware upgrade because the last time I tried an OTA update it failed although nothing bad seemed to happen to my phone but I'm really scared of bricking it.
If I use Kies do I loose root?
Do I need to worry about not being on an original Samsung Kernel?
Also I installed several mobile phone tracking software such as Prey Project to my phone - so I'm not 100% sure if it's still there or not after resetting. I can't seem to see any trace of it on the various screens.
Is KIES the safest way to upgrade to JellyBean?
The current state of my phone is full reset (also wiped the USB Storage and SD Card) and as follows:

Yes you will loose the root and i don't suggest this way to upgrade

No, it is not the best to do a upgrade is pc odin after factory reseting the phone on a safe kernel as you are on speedmod it is safe

I would say kies will be the official way to do it ..

I'm a little worried about upgrading via a cable from my PC to the phone in-case I loose the connection
I was having trouble last night simply copying files from the phone to the PC via a datacable
it kept disconnecting after a few seconds.
At first I thought it was software on my phone that was the issue but even after resetting the phone to factory default setting I still got disconnections.
Then I went through my PC and removed any possible causes of problems such as firewall software, antivirus, etc
I only reinstalled windows on my PC a few days ago so there's not much software on the PC but I did remove USB software for my Motorola Phone and I think that's helped. The connection seems a lot more stable now. But doing something as sensitive as a firmware update worries me.
Removing windows software isn't an issue as I've ordered more RAM for my PC to take it up to 8GB and will have to re-install a 64 Bit version of Windows anyway to make use of the extra RAM.

Looks appealing because it seems to be a stock ROM but with a lot of Bloatware removed that I wouldn't want anyways.
Is this a good and safe option compared to using PC Odin?
The version of ClockworkMod on my phone is v5.8.1.8

That rom is good also there is one by eybee too. Full stock.
