How to guide to fixing your phone triangle computer bricked vibrant. - Vibrant Android Development

I have solved this problem for me I am not sure if this will work for everyone.
I have used pieces from other users so I can't take credit for anything, just helping the community.
I realize there are others out there that claim to do the same thing however after spending 1/2 a day doing it those ways, none worked till I did this, that is why i posted this guide, for people coming from bionix 1.31 or similar roms and using one of those guides causing a soft brick issue, this is what flashed mine back to 2.2 official firmware from a bricked state.
this will also work to flash a phone back to stock to send back for warranty if it is rooted and voodoo'ed.
Please follow this guide exactly. If a step doesn't work try again from the start then do not continue as this won't work for you.
1. your phone looks like this
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
2. in this mode your phone will be seen by this version of odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=478059&d=1293895557
3. dl and install the odin program works on win 7 64 bit no issues.
4. dl this ka6 update (this is a factory flash for odin) http://www.multiupload.com/GZT6ZYFX46
5. extract the ka6 zip to your desktop and rename the (.tar.mp5) file to (.tar) change the extension only DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME! < this is the trick it will not flash any other way once this is done it will flash right through.
6. open the odin program.
7. connect the phone get it to the screen like the pic in step 1.
8. the 1st ID:com box will turn yellow and have some id numbers in it.
9. click the pda button under files select the .tar file you made in step 5.
10. it will display the link to the file on your desktop in the pda text box.
11. DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING OR RE_PARTITION THIS MAY NOT WORK>
12. CLICK THE START BUTTON ONLY>
13. DO NOT UNPLUG ANYTHING YOUR WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE>
14. THE PHONE AND ODIN WILL STRAT TO DISPLAY LINES THAT MOVE LEAVE THE PHONE TILL THE FIRST BLOCK ON THE TOP OF ODIN SAYS PASS IN GREEN!
15 your phone will reboot and everything will be back to stock 2.2
16. you may need to wipe your phone through the factory privacy menu reset again then all is stock.
Thanks to all the link I used.
If this works for you please click my tanks button and let me know.

you have a point, the OP's post somewhat redundant and probably not needed.
But you know what's more unwanted in this forum? A trash talker like you who's relentlessly being a jackass.
Please Mod, ban this dude.

This thread should be moved to General, no disrespect. It's simply in the wrong category.

I fixed this a little differently and without having to wipe my device. Figured this out after a bad kernel flash through odin. My vibrant had this screen and would not be recognized in any windows os on multiple computers with all kinds of drivers and many versions of odin.
You'll need a pc running linux. If you don't have one, temporarily boot ubuntu off a cd or usb (google it).
Install heimdall either from a binary package if your on 64 bit or compile from source like I did if you have a x86 system. We don't need the gui just the cmd application.
If you compile make sure you compile the libusb that comes with heimdall first. Also if your on ubuntu or a debian variant you will need to install build-essentials from apt or synaptic.
Now type the following command in a terminal window do not press enter:
heimdall close-pc-screen
Pull the battery from the phone put it back in and plug in the usb. Now turn the phone on and hit enter to run your command when the phone starts to turn on.
You may see the script start to run and fail or not work at all. There is a sweet spot to hit enter and run that full cmd. if it didn't work try again. Took me like five tries.
When successful your phone will just boot back into your rom as you had it. Though you may want to reinstall now since something clearly went wrong.
Hope this helps.

My phone had the PHONE!PC screen and I could ODIN it back to stock, in windows. Just search for PHONE!PC and there are PLENTY of guides to this. You've got to make sure you've got NO driver/device problems in windows for this to work.

Trust me its possible to put your phone in a state that windows will not recognize it. My post was meant to help those individuals. Thanks for your input though also.

It should be mentioned that you can only flash from that screen with one of the newer SBL already on the device. Otherwise you will have to get into Download Mode to ODIN. I can speak from experience when I bumped the spacebar trying to get my device into Download Mode and ODIN began to flash away. Left me with an almost completely unresponsive device. If you are unsure whether you have flashed a ROM containing the newer SBL, then you are much safer getting into Download Mode as usual and going from there. Whether it be 3-button or a JIG.

I couldn't even jig. I solder for a living and made my own. No luck.

I have had my phone at this screen before, I simply rebooted holding the keys, went into download mode and used Odin...

I can't answer that although I would assume if you use the official update for your galaxy phone and remove the .mp5 extention it should.

I think all Samsung phones running android can use Odin. You will need the correct .tar and .PDA files for the phone you are using as the vibrant ones will not work on any other phone. Don't quote me on this though, its just my guess.

n1 issues

hi everyone, im new to these forums. i want to love my n1, but cant. my service is horrible here in miami florida. so bad that tmobile keeps giving me free months of service instead of a solution.
i was told about holding the phone a certain way, but its so unnatural. but i understand that a few firmware updates helped out the signal issues. me and my sons nexus ones are fluctuating 20-50 dB's at a time.
so i try to root using the cyanogen wiki's instructions. the second i type in adb devices into my windows 7 cmd window, i get the following. "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command"
i repeated the steps in the wiki and have no idea what i am doing wrong.
can anyone assist please?
Mod, if i posted in the wrong section i am sorry; feel free to move thread.
thanks all!

No I used the windows cmd window. I saw the android cmd window but it wouldn't let me type in it. Was I supposed to type in the android window?
Before you go and unlock the phone and install cyanogen, are you sure you want to go down that road? I don't think there are any reception improvements in any of the custom ROMs, so if that's what you are hoping for you might be disappointed.
You may lose your warranty if you do it, and you are going to permanently lose the over-the-air upgrade system that Google uses to push upgrades out with.

You need to read up a lot more on how your computer works, and directory structures, and cmd windows and all that. If you are already confused you could just end up breaking your phone. First thing is to install the SDK. Get that done, then read some more, etc. Do it slowly.

Thanks for the heads up. The sdk is definately installed.
I heard that the other radios perform better. I need a miracle, I drop 60% of my calls according to tmo. So does my sons n1's. My daughters cliq and wife's bold9700 are always on 3g
What Baseband version do you have installed on your phone? It's under Settings -> About phone.
You should be running the newest radio firmware already I would think.

I don't know it off the top of my head. But its definately current.
Well if you want to check it out, I believe "32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2" is the newest. If that's what your phone has then I don't think there is any value in unlocking.
An update from Google should be coming or announced before the end of the month, so maybe it'll have some fixes for you. If not, than at that point I would go ahead and unlock it.
i went ahead and successfully unlocked the boot loader. im trying to load the recovery.img via a terminal app on my phone but i get a message saying permission denied. i heard that there was a way of loading the recovery.img through rom manager, so i tried it.i got a message saying an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.
any ideas?
thanks!
seems like i dont have superuser.....
Yup, when I type su in terminal I get a message telling me that I don't have those privaleges. Any ideas? I'm Googling but can't find results.
i find the instructions in here relatively newb friendly. But read all carefully before rushing into action.

and... do all the above first, before you mess with the radio image. all over the above is relatively safe/cannot brick your phone but wrongly flashing radio image can brick your phone permanently (especially if you run out of power or pull the battery during the radio update process)
Thanks. I'm er27. Do I flash with or without himen?
to make it very simple, i'd just recommend first:
1) flash Amon_Ra's recovery image 1.70 (i sent you the link earlier)
2) flash Cyanogen CM5.0.6 (I sent you the link earlier)
3) flash CM's google-addon (on the same page)
CM5.0.6 includes Himem, no need to flash separately.
See how it goes.... THEN you can try flashing radio to EPE54B, but please read all related to that careful. the command is simple, but if you pull your battery during the update, or the phone runs out of power, or you otherwise try to interrupt the process, your phone WILL BE permanently broken. Sometimes the radio update takes a long while (15 min or so), and it seems unresponsive, then you have 2 automatic reboots - those moments can be frightening. best would be to leave the phone plugged into the power socket while you doing it

[Q] How to Linux Flash

Ok, i've read and read, and read... I can not find out how to flash a captivate on linux. I'm running mint 9. I want to go back to full stock, original rom that came on the phone. How do I do this in Linux?
Odin one click downloader should be able flash your captivate to stock
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I tried it, (under windows) and it went from what I had to JH2. I dont think I had jh2 to begin with, I think it was jf? something... The only reason I had to try and reflash it at all was one of the apps messed up and it started looping startup. So I went back to stock according to odin. Maybe I need to do it again, I may have done something wrong....
Odin is a linx one click fix, or I have to virtual box windows to do it? My wifes computer is the only windows machine in the house, and I hate messing with it, its tooo dang slow!
When I down load something to flash, its password protected. Format is .rar. I just can not open them. Is this right and the other software will open it, or do I need a password to open them?

Any firmwares that came from samsung usually have "samsung-firmwares.com" as password (no quotes).
On a side note, I need some linux type help. Playing with VMware player and ubuntu 10, but I'm very lost..... anyone wanna pm me with some help? Would be much appreciated...... and yes, i know thats off topic, but i'm desperate and people actually reply and help on these forums.....
I also use mint 9, similar to ubuntu 10. Pm me with basic questions, I don't know much outside of what you can do in gnome. What is it that you want to do in a vm? I use virtual box and recommend it. I use odin on dads win 7 machine though. I read that it doesn't work in vm but I'm not sure I believe that. Just haven't tried it yet.

depends on the rom,
some are signed and can be renamed as update.zip and flashed from recovery by toggling down to reinstall packages with the volume bar.
some are unsigned and need rom manager. from rom manager you reboot into clockwork mod recovery and install packages.
some need odin and are a teathered flash.
the easiest way to go is SRE v1.2.1a, aka "super rooter explorer" decide which version suits you from the sticky in the development section and download. it is signed and is run from recovery as update.zip.
the instructions are there, somewhere.
Thank you for the password!
Thanks for the help. I got odin working. I'm having trouble but I think I'm well on the way.
I was able to flash in virtul box. Read my thread in the dev section.

[Q] Please help a NOOB!

I am obviously a NOOB. I am reading previous posts, but this is way more complicated than I expected.
I just want to get any factory firmware on my Captivate so that I can sell it. Right now I can't enter Download mode or Recovery mode via button combinations. I have tried for hours now.
Are there any simple directions that actually give links to what I need to download. ie...What Odin Files, etc.
Please help!

And if your Captivate boots, you don't need button combinations to enter download mode. You need to download the SDK, put the Captivate in a USB debug mode, and then do "adb reboot download" to get there.
NOOB.

Why don't you just do a factory reset and delete your files from the phone ?
If your unable to just go in download mode and use the Odin one-click then you clearly need to spend more time reading. This is also a big red flag that you could turn your phone (effortlessly) into a brick.
Your choices are:
A) Read up, learn and invest time in it (not just 30min and a simple how-to then jump the guns with it)
B) Just delete your stuff, do a factory reset and sell it like it is.
A more tech savvy user will mod it to its liking. Why do the job for them if your not confortable doing it in the first place? It's not like your going to use it again, your selling it.
Yup I agree - if you already have a Stock phone - don't screw with it. Just do the factory reset which will wipe the phone back to stock anyways - and if you want to go that extra step you could format the internal SDCard from within the phone menu.
If it aint broke - don't play with it! (Well my real motto is If it ain't broke tweak it! but.. for you it doesn't apply)
I don't necessarily WANT to sell it. I want to give it a fair chance. I am used to an iPhone but I wanted to see what all the talk about the androids is about. I heard that this is all SO simple. Maybe so for some. I am just spoiled by the user friendliness of apple i guess.
Anyway, i haven't given up completely. I am gonna try all this again. I just don't have Hours upon Hours to define all the stuff that I'm reading. I am just surprised how difficult it is to make this thing anywhere near the same level as an iPhone. I'm sure it's easy for most. Maybe I'll figure it out....

It's not that hard but yes your spoiled . It's not like going to a website and bingo it's done like the jailbraiking on iphone. You actually do the commands manually and learn something in the process.
You also need the corresponding tools to do the job (Google SDK for ADB, Odin for flashing, etc..). You don't build a house only by looking at the blue prints you have to put some work into it
Check out my ODIN video it should walk you through this very easily.

[Q] Actually can't flash back to stock using Odin or otherwise

I've tried using both Odin methods, even using sdk tools, through command prompt with adb. Nothing is working. My Captivate gets to the download screen, and that's as far as it gets. I've watched numerous videos about this, and haven't come across this problem before.
I'm not an idiot, i've flashed a few roms before, but i'm using phoenix 6.0 with a basic speedmod kernel, no under/over clocking.
Can someone please help me with this, it's extremely frustrating. Thank you

When I first decided to flash to stock using Odin I had all kinds of issues. Everything from nothing happening to it only flashing halfway through. My problem turned out to be the cable. I was using a cheap microUSB cable at work. When I got home, I used the original cable that came with the device and had no issues.
Things you can try;
- Using a different microUSB cable
- Making sure you have the samsung drivers installed. If they are, uninstall and reinstall
- Try different USB ports with the microUSB cable. Some people say they had problems using the front ports while others the back ports. Worth a shot
- Try using a different version of Odin either newer or older
- If you have access to another PC, try flashing from there as well
Hope this helps
i've tried using both odins, the 3 click, and the one click. I've gone in with "AIO Captivate Toolbox" and also through the command prompt with adb.exe. It starts flashing and puts my phone into download mode, where Odin has it recognized, then it gets removed, but it never comes back like its supposed to.

Will not fully reboot after flash back to stock ROM
Just flashed back to stock Rogers with Odin. Everything went OK untill reboot. It gets stuck at the ROGERS screen, then just shuts off!! and ideas?

How long is my Captivate supposed to be "Downloading"?

I've been trying to install Serendipity to my Captivate. I've been working on this for several hours. Having problem after problem because i came from Windows Mobile ROMS.
I find it hard to find how to instructions for this. diggin in the web to learn about clockworkmod and 2e recovery and Odin (which I still don't konw how to do). Documentation is awful!
Anyway, for well over an hour now my phone has displayed nothing but a Droid digging a hole. Under that it says "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!"
What do I do? I think it's stuck. I have read many good thing about Serendipity and wanted to try it. Now I just hope I haven't bricked my phone.
I really love Android, but flashing custom roms to WM phones is much easier and better documented.
try again.
if you don't get a blue bar moving in about 60-90 seconds, chances are it hasn't done ****.
My only suggestion is to follow the serendipity website instructions. I found that if you use odin for master clear then you need to do it while the phone is on with usb debugging.enabled.

This belongs in Q&A. Download designears one click odin back to stock. Open Odin up. Runs as admin. Put phone in download and plug in usb. Hit start. Make sure u see yellow com port in Odin. Good luck. Hope that helps

What I've done when this happened (only happened once), I just unplugged the phone (stupid idea generally), pull the battery then re-insert it. Go to your computer and open up ODIN. Plug in you phone in Downloader mode and reinstall.

The biggest problem that most people have with odin is that the proper sequence is not followed. 1. Run odin as admin 2. set up odin how you want 3. when odin is fully set up and your phone is in a fully off state with no usb pluggged in....THEN hold both volume keys while plugging in the usb and voila. ps like was said this belongs in Q&A
I think... yes, I think I may have it working. I will update later. I need some sleep sometime tonight.
One thing that wasn't clear to me doing this last night for the first time...
When the phone goes into that "downloading..." mode, it won't do anything more until you press 'Start' on Odin. Now I am a noob at this, but others are too so that might clarify things a bit.

There's even a video with step by step instructions.

I know what you mean about documentation, bro! But I had a WM phone as well (AT&T 8525) and it wasn't always that easy to flash that thing either! Once you get the info together, it's prett straitforward. You just have to save those bookmarks! lol
Anyways, regarding your Clockworkmod 2e issue. I just posted a solution to this as I had the same issue just last night and figured it out.
Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002649
This should fix the clockwork signature issue when trying to boot into CWR, if that's the issue you're having. It was a little tricky but if you use the instructons I posted it should work fine. Link to original post is also in that thread.
Once that's installed, you can install rom ZIPs easily from there. Just launch the CWR and select install zips from sd. The next menu will let you choose the actual zip file to install. (as opposed to renaming it update.zip)
Non ZIP roms (.tar files) are usually installed using Odin3. Setting the phone to debug mode and selecting the file .tar from the PDA selection menu in Odin. And you usually have to launch Odin first, then plug in the USB cable to make the app see your phone.
If you hose the phone, you can almost always fall back on the old Loader mode to restore back to original rom using the Odin 1 click Stock rom located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
It includes full instructions. Then you can start all over from there!
And just to get you going again, here's the link to the Super One Click root.

If anyone feels I'm wrong about anything or am over simplifying, please feel free to post your input. I've been doing a lot of mods on my phone for over a year and this is just a basic summary of what I've come up with.
Hope it was helpful.
