So anyways, someone on the Defy forums developed an app that would put Debian on the Defy. He states it only works with the Defy, but I had to try it out, still.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962974
Also, on his instructions he says to put it on the removable SD card. Don't do that. Actually, take the card out so it's not even there!
1. go to the app, and select 'download debian-img.zip'
2. Wait until it gets to 1% then CANCEL, or BACK OUT.
3. Use root explorer or even the stock file explorer that comes with your phone, and go to the 'debian' folder and delete the contents inside.
4. Use the link he provided to download the image straight to your PC. (it will take for ever, it took me 3 hours!)
5. Plug your phone into your computer.
6. Mount as USB Mass Storage
7. Go into your internal phone storage and put the downloaded debian-img into the debian folder on you internal phone storage.
I just wanted to make clear that the debian folder with the debian-img inside of it must be on your internal phone storage, for the Atrix. And my 'instructions' are for following so there are no mistakes.
Basically, follow HIS instructions, except for that part (where to put Debian)
So, anyways, I find it very cool how you can run Debian on your phone. Some people tend to think stuff like this is stupid and pointless...
And once again CREDIT TO COCUS, AND XDAID.
edit: I used AndroidVNC off the Market and didn't like it, I have found the app PocketCloud to be TONS better.

Hmm.
I have done all of the steps involved, but debian doesn't seem to boot for me.
I have (on internal storage) a debian directory which contains: debian-img.zip and debian.img
I have the debondroid application, which gives me the "boot debian" and "remove debian" options.
When I launch "boot debian" it grants superuser permissions, but it never completes and I can't VNC properly.
I wonder if I have an application that is interfering, or if I it just isn't working for me for some other reason.
I'm surprised this hasn't garnered more attention. How functional is the device? Do core services (wifi, bluetooth) still work?
Thanks for your effort!

Yea this happened to me after I accidentally hit 'remove debian'. All I did then was redo everything (re install the app and delete debian img and put it back on) and rebooted an it worked fine. You are definitely not the only one having problems btw. Just look at the Defy forum, there isn't one person besides me who has actually reported it working.
Good luck with it.

I think it uses what ever connection the phone has. If you are on wifi, then it uses wifi, and 3G it uses 3G. Although I don't think you can actually control the connection through debian.

Well we should be able to get VNC veiwer running in webtop mode through an xsession config? Though I have no idea where to start for something like that, I would assume it would be similar to the way we were able to get the terminal to run in webtop mode.

True though till there is a way to get a more versatile webtop then I don't see any reason not to try it, though I did notice even with vnc veiwer not running the debain part still runs within the phone so alternative to the webtop you should be able to get to the vnc through the network within a brower or vnc client on another computer. Either way worth looking into for now till a full webtop, personally Im not up for messing with the files with the webtop just yet.

Was vnc running in mobile phone mode or was it in an x session within the webtop, in phone mode...It would look like garbage still wanna try it out in the x session or over the network just to see how it runs. though will have at it tomorrow.

I had it up and running last night but I cant seem to get it booted now, I've tried the boot loop fix apk no luck, even retried the whole process using the loop fix apk, still no luck it posts starting debain then send me to vnc when I go back to check the boot status it stops.
Even though I found you could install Debian on the Atrix, I am a complete noob to Linux. I cannot seem to find a way to install Flash on the Ice Weasel browser. Every time I try Install -i (and then the package) in the terminal I get an error. Has anyone installed anything on Debian yet?

I've had similar problems. When I hit accidentally hit 'remove debian', even after reinstalling the image, it still failed to connect. A reboot fixed it. I'm sure you have rebooted, but just in case you haven't you should try that.

I was looking around for a thread for this phone, but found nothing. I hope people start working on it, I'd like to mod it.
Is there anything I can do to help, like dumping the rom? Do any of the current tools even work on it?
I read somewhere Kyocera was going to put out an upgrade to 2.1, bit I can't find anything besides a mention of that.
EDIT: FEB 22, 2011
NEW 2.2 THREAD
YES! It is actually out! For real!
EDIT: Jan 27, 2011
It was released (somewhere around page 76) that Android 2.2 would be released Late Feb to early March.
START NEW THREADS!
If you have questions other than modding, it would help to put it in a new thread with the prefix subject "Kyocera Zio M6000 - "
I figure if lots of threads pop up like that it would be more likely that they'd notice it and actually create it's own forum. If everything is just tagged onto this thread, then it will just get huge and unnavigable, and the mods won't notice enough activity.
Update:
hotaru was awesome enough to post a full dump of the Zio for us:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8907621&postcount=287
If you look around this thread you'll find info about rooting the phone. Also in this thread a port Clockwork Recovery was released. There are some issues with it that were not resolvable. Such as if you boot to Clockwork and don't actually reset the phone, it will lose the Cricket settings and revert to Verizon. So it will work to recover a ROM and backup, but you need to also need to reset or restore when you go there.
Wasn't sure where to post this since there is no HW section for this phone, so I put it here in hacking general...
Could someone create a forum for it and move this post to it?
EDIT:
To root the phone people have had success with 1-click root for N1
And the MSL# is 000000
The debug ACCESS CODE is #777468
A copy of the 1.6 rom here
Will update here with any usefull info.
Also, this thing has absolutely no multi-touch, even though all the blogs says it does.
For Tethering. PdaNet (I can't post any links cause i'm a new user, just do a Google Search and click "I'm Feeling Lucky")
Works like a Charm.
Currently Using the Free Version and it works GREAT.
Even has an SMS client built in so you can reply to your messages while your tethered.
Just make sure USB Debugging is on and you'll have no problem.
I also put in a request for a user group for this phone. I emailed one of the admins directly and he told me if they get enough requests they may create it.
What I have really been looking for is either a hacked up upgrade Rom to either enclair or group for this phone.

I second that motion. The seems to be the first legit prepaid android phone, and it isn't really getting any attention, anywhere :-/
Which I find quite odd. I personally have the EVO and love it but I did buy this phone for my girlfriend and she absolutely loves it and for a prepaid phone with a price point of 230 bucks you really cant beat it. Especially for 55 a month. I would think more people would be flocking to this. I have even considered giving up my evo for it but I do like the 4g. And the Build of the Evo is much higher quality.
Root
I think getting the thing rooted is important. All of the wifi tether apps require that. I read somewhere that someone had done it.
Do you find your girlfriend's Zio crashes when trying to watch video that you are opening from a link? Mine does every time :-(
Yup, lots of freezing, soft and hard.
I can't get rid of a "cdma: reorder" error after installing GoogleVoice. Now I can only make calls through GV or I'll get the error. I really need a better ROM, they better come out with 2.1 ASAP.
I also hope the no multitouch is only a sw issue and not a hw one.
i totally agree with you guys this phone needs some tweeking

Multitouch is something that is enabled in the kernel. I'm sure that the update to 2.1 will bring multi touch.
ROOTED!
The Zio can be rooted, download the file, email it to yourself, and open it on the phone. It is easy peasy ;-)
Paste this into the search up top: 1-click root for N1
(I would have posted the link but the forums rules won't allow me because...I don't have many posts?)
Wifi tether works like a champ.
No problems with my girlfriends phone I played with it for at least 2 or 3 hours when I first got it and eveything appeared to work fine. The only thing that I really didnt like was the factory keyboard I heard swiftkey got a major upgrade and was thinking about using it as a replacement especially cause it has the voice to text feature. And I may root her phone as well to give that wifi tether a shot. But what I would really like to see is some kind of upgrade to 2.X I think that it what will really make this phone shine.

I second this motion.
Step 1: Download APN Backup & Restore from Market
Step 2: Open APN Backup & Restore
Step 3: Backup APNs
Step 4: Plug phone into computer with USB cable.
Step 5: Drag notification bar from the top, tap the USB connection notification, and Mount the SD card to your computer.
Step 6: Find the mounted drive on the computer (may be D:, E:, F:, G:, for example) by opening My Computer. Open it.
Step 7: Go into the APNBackup&Restore folder.
Step 8: Right click on your backed up APNs (maybe like 201009041233-apns.xml or something or whatever you named them when you did a Backup APNs)n
Step 9: Open with Notepad or Word Pad if it asks you.
Step 10: Highlight all text with your mouse, or use Ctrl + A to select all.
Step 11: After all text is highlighted, use Ctrl + C to copy the text OR go to the 'Edit' menu at the top with your mouse, and choose 'Copy'.
Step 12: Reply to this topic in this thread, right click in the text box where you type, and choose 'Paste'.
Step 13: Revel in good feelings as you provide very valuable help to the Android community.
Thank you ahead of time, if you are willing to help.
yea do that for sure! and also maybe somebody who has root can grab the mms.apk and .odex files too =\
I'm running the latest Vegan rom and have done the market fix, but it doesn't seem like I have the full market. I notice lots of games and apps missing. I did the fix by stopping the framework service and market, opened titanium backup, wiped framework data. Went to market, got the error and rebooted. I noticed the market was much better, but still missing a lot. What did I miss?

Unfortunately, there are some apps and games that are missing even after the market fix. Most are there, but there are the odd ones that don't show. Smart people are working on this I'm sure.
If you have the know how you can try pulling and sideloading them from another Android device. If it's a free app you may find the apk elsewhere. Aside from that, we just need some patience. I'm pretty happy with what I've got so far.
i think there is a problem with market itself right now..ive been seeing problems even on the phones. i changed to vegan and had to sideload most apps for now
I also am missing part of the market.
the funny thing is that some things like Firefox showed up for me in the past but no longer do.
I don't know what I need to do to fix it.

About that Server Error message, I've been noticing for the past few days that the error seems to come up for much more often when I am at work than when I am at home. The internet connection at work is thru a shared Verizon Wireless connection.
At home I was able to go into the market and browse extensively without getting any error. At work I get the error almost as soon as I go into the market and just keeps coming up every few seconds.

it is very strange. Shouldnt we have full access to the market? What if we make a build.prop file that has it recognize the tablet as a DROID phone? Would that work?

Yeah, that's a really nice feature. I found both my phone AND my nook color. Naturally the nook color shows up as a Zoom2 but I guess the push feature may be limited to 2.2 and newer. So it may require at least Nookie Froyo for that. Or are you using rooted stock FW?

Push doesn't work for me on my DInc. I don't have my Nookie right now so I can't test it. I'm told that you have to open the Market app on your phone in order for the site to see your phone and push apps to it. Doesn't work with the custom rom I'm running though.

I am not sure it works, but my "Zoom2" does list as a valid device..
This must be something new. I see everything i downloaded since the end of December, on both my incredible and the nook... but nothing prior. ill test the push.
when i went to push i saw 2 devices something identified simply as "phone" and "Verizon HTC adr6300" not sure what phone is. possibly one of the froyo builds i ran?
i pushed the chase app to my incredible. by the time i finished editing this post. it was installed... pretty neat. i guess no nookie love right now. still a really cool find.
Edit again... lol interesting thing is whatever "phone" is it shows no make no model. and says the last time i used it was today.. which must be the nook.

Actually, I am on 1.01 rooted (haven't updated to 1.1 yet) and it is able to see mine. I haven't really done anything special outside of rooting. I don't have CWR or any custom kernels yet - not sure if that makes a difference. Haven't even had a chance to play with Froyo yet.
My 1.1.0 rooted is there, and a test push worked fine (although, when you get the OTA is crapshoot I would think).
Hmmm. this whole thing seems to be a crapshoot.
My nookie froyo showed up, but when I tried to send something it said unsupported device.
Same thing for my fuze (winmo) running xdandroid 2.2.1. showed up, but unsupported so the whole thing is useless to me.
I wish it worked because there are so many things that don't show up in market on nookie froyo.
Oh well. Let the waiting continue for CM7!!

After reading some positive reviews and seeing a video showing it working on a TouchPad running Android, I decided to buy DeadSpace. I made the purchase through market.android.com, but I can't download it because the Market app says it's not compatible with my device. Does anyone have a recommendation for how to download this game now that I've bought it? Can I change the device ID or something to make the market think my TouchPad is something that is compatible?
Thanks!

Actually this did work for me and I was able to download the game. I did have to clear cache on Market and clear data on Google Services Framework, then reboot, but once I did, it showed up. I had to perform these steps on my Nook Color back in the day as well...
So now that it's installed, the game starts and says it needs to download 300+MB. I tell it to do so and it immediately shows an empty dialog with only an "Exit" button, after which it exits. I can't get past that. Any ideas?
Also, I installed Chainfire3D and the Nvidia plugin. Is that necessary? Is that correct for the TouchPad? Is there any other configuration that I should do for this to work well?
Thanks much for the help!
You could try the other plugins powervr or qualcomm
Glad you were able to get it downloaded. Not sure on the download issue though.
If you have another supported device you could try downloading the files on it and moving them over - or see if someone has posted the sdcard files somewhere.
Have the exact same issue with Dead Space. Asphalt 6 HD works like a charm though. I'm looking for answers but I get the same response.... wash, rinse, repeat (wipe, clear cache, repeat thrice...)
Haven't tried doing the 3-peat yet. If anyone else has and has achieved success after having the same issue with this game, let us know!

Success! Took a while though.....
So I updated my build.prop to the Pyramid device... (sorry, no link where I found that, but GT-i9100 should do fine too). Then I side loaded the main apk like suggested in previous threads. Then I copied the root folder from my Evo where I already had it installed to my PC and transferred the folder to my TP like it was already fully installed.
From there it still said my device wasn't supported, so I installed the powervr plugin for chainfire3d, used in-app settings through chainfire.
Here's where it got weird: I kept getting the same error over and over of my device not being supported. Then my wifi connected and when I ran the game, it immediately searched for an update. Apparently it found one! Suddenly I'm up and running, smooth as silk.
Now gonna try Real Racing 2!

Anyone know a solution for this? I'm getting the same issue. I'm running Jensen 2.8 lite with the buildprop changes and also installed chainfire3d with all the pluggins. No go
Okay, I used my Nook Color to download the data, transferred that back to the TouchPad, and launched it successfully. When it starts rendering 3D, though, it's all white with no textures. What Chainfire3D settings are folks using on the TouchPad that work?
I have read somewhere to use the following option for chainfire 3D as this is the GPU-manufacturer:
qualcomm
it may be worth a try.

Yeah, I've tried all three plugins with the various options enabled and disabled. No go. Has anyone gotten this going with A3.5? Between this and the lockups in Currents and other Webkit apps, I'm strongly considering going back to the previous alpha.
Okay, I finally got this working. I moved back to A2.1 which didn't actually fix anything (though it does seem to have resolved the lockups in Webkit-based apps like Google Reader and Currents, though they're not as smooth when they're working), but then I purchased the full version of Chainfire 3D and launched Dead Space using per-app settings. Suddenly it worked perfectly! I don't know why that would make a difference...perhaps I just didn't know how to use the free version. Either way, $4 is a small price to pay for the added flexibility of the full version of Chainfire 3D, and of course now I have a working, silky smooth Dead Space! Woohoo!
UPDATE: Okay, I know the magic incantation now. This works under A3.5 (and therefore presumably XRON) just fine if you use the PowerVR plugin in ChainFire 3D. I didn't have to reduce texture quality or anything else, just set the plug-in to PowerVR. I hope this helps others get this really nice looking game going on their TouchPads!
Well now that I've got a six inch screen to browse on, I'd like to take advantage of it and disable mobile site views/force desktop view on all sites when using Chrome. Anyone know of any particular method for accomplishing that? The "Request Desktop" checkbox in Chrome itself is unreliable so I was hoping for a root alternative if necessary. Tried this method but it's terribly outdated so I wasn't very surprised when it didn't work.
I haven't tried this yet, but this app looks like it might be worth trying - "Chrome User Agent Switcher". At least the description sounds like it's what you need, plus it looks like it survives reboots in the same UA mode.

Tried it but it didn't work. :/

Boo. I'm going to pick mine up in a couple of hours (if they actually have one in stock like they say they do). I'll do some testing and let you know if I find something that works.
Chrome User Agent works great. I've been using it for a while. But you do need root.
EDIT: Hmmmm. I see that you are rooted. I haven't tried it on the N6 yet, but perhaps you need Busybox installed for the app to run properly?
Just installed BusyBox and still no change. Do I need to do anything in particular with BusyBox?

I don't believe so. I also can't get it to work. I'm pretty sure it was working in lollipop on my N5 though, so I'm not sure that the problem is necessarily lollipop related. Perhaps it's related to a recent chrome update...I'm not sure.
That apps with for me, stock rooted n6.sweet!
Hmm. After not working at first, this is now working for me. Not sure why. Try it again and make sure you force close chrome after applying the user agent settings switch (and make sure you actually apply the settings switch by hitting the arrow in the top right of the app).
