For the past few weeks I've been looking into different media servers to stream video to my android devices without re-encoding each video for mobile use. I tried TVersity, but I wasn't able to get the streaming to work. Lately I've been using Subsonic to stream everything and it's been great. It streams any type of video through a flash player on the fly. It's also very easy to install and even works outside of your home network. The amazing thing is how fluid this flash player works on the G-Tab. Coming from a rooted Pandigital Novel, this device's video and flash playback capabilities keep amazing me. If you are looking for a media server application to stream video, I'd highly recommend subsonic. What other media servers does everyone use?
I use Twonky Server on my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo and Twonky Mobile on my Gtab. Works great.

I am new to Android and have only had my Nexus One since March but what I really miss about Windows Mobile devices is the ability to stream music and video from my network drive. I find it mind boggling that this feature which has been available on WM devices for every is still not possible on Android devices. Is it not possible to map a drive with Android so that the built on media player would be able to play music and video without having to download the file first?
Would appreciate and thought or comments on this.
Thanks,
I searched all night last night for a solution too. A lot of file explorers can map network drive but none of the media player can stream the videos (had to download, lack of codec etc). Eventually I had to setup tversity on my desktop, map the network drive on my desktop and stream video/audio through tversity's web flash interface (you can use track ball to control the interface). It's not pretty but it plays everything so far.
Get the app HomePipe there's a free and pay version.
I'm using the Free version and you can stream MP3s from your pc to android wifi or 3g.
You can add network shares from your nas too.
Bad thing is, you can only listen to the mp3 you select, if you want to queue up or look up other files, music stops. I'm only using free version, so i don't know if pro is any better.
As for videos. I have no idea.
I had an iPhone 3GS for 10 months before i went back to Android... and Air Video was freaking amazing. Wished Android had something similar.

I would really like to know that as well, specially over 3G..
If you have QNAP NAS you can stream .mp4 videos with QNAP APP.
This is my prob. from another thread:
Stream video over internet from QNAP to SAMSUNG GALAXY S 2.
Postby Freeman111 ยป Fri May 18, 2012 6:33 pm
I want to stream my videos over the Internet.
I have tried the following:
Rooted the phone.
Installed WEBDAV apps so I can get access to my Qnap and see the files (videos) BUT I can't stream them. All the video players I have tried come up with some kind of error.
However I can stream .mp4 videos using Qnaps APP QMOBILE, however it can't locate my .avi videos so thats not good. But I don't understand why I can't use WEBDAV like on
an iPhone.
I have heard of mounting folders using CIFS MANAGER, but does it also work outside your local network so you can stream movies over the internet?
And what port shall I use for CIFS manager?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Does anyone know any app that is the equivalent of or provides same functionality as "Archos Video" app or "Allshare" samsung app.
I am looking for something that is a DLNA client - has the ability to connect to home network DLNA server such as Tversity or Windows Media Player and play videos
I haven't tried it on my nook, but the app "Skifta" is a generic DLNA app ... available in the Market
EDIT: just realized you are looking for a client, not a server .... sorry ...

No Problem. Thanks for trying to help.
I'm still looking for the right combination of Server & Client. Here is my experience so far:
Mac OS DLNA Servers I'm testing (Twonky Server, Orb, Majestic, Playback, MediaLink). I want to stream Music, Movies and Photos from the iMAC/Server for playback ON the NC.
Twonky Mobile (not twonky Mobile Server) worked best for me. It played Movies, Music, and Photos from Twonky Server, Majestic, and Playback). I was only able to stream Music from the Orb server. My only complaint is the quality of playback is not consistant. But this may be caused by my WLAN bandwidth/coverage.
UPnPlayer worked as well. I did not care for the UI and playlist process. Also, it locked up when I tried to play/view photos. It played Movies and Music from Twonky Server, Majestic, and Playback). I was only able to stream Music from the Orb server.. The best thing about UPnPlayer is that it let's you choose which APP will actually Play the media (i.e. stock music player or Doubletwist, Stock Video or Rockplayer, etc.)
2Player - I was able to see all the Server applications. But it would not present the media folders from several for them. I was able to play music from Orb and Playback. The interface was my favorite, but too bad it just for music.
EML UPnP - I didn't like this one so I did not test it much. But it was able to see most of the Media Servers. Appeared to be Music only.
Hope this helps
I know therebis a WMC app as well as one for VLC.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I got the nook color yesterday and its already rooted with 0.6.8 (froyo in emmc).
I will try the suggestions over the weekend.
Hey fellow xoom users, i found this app that finally solves the problem of media streaming from windows to android devices. All u have to do is download the app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skifta.android.app&feature=search_result
and create an account and download the desktop client, and fiddle with your windows media player settings and it works beautifully for streaming movies, pictures, and music. It works on local wifi and over public networks when u sign up. It works with any DLNA device too, and an xbox 360 and ps3 for streaming. It is the only app that works for this. If u have an alternate media player for unsupported formats like avi it even plays those files through that app while streaming. and from my use, it streams very well over any half decent wifi, but still requires wifi. i tried it on my EVO 4g and even oven 4g it would not stream, so thats the only downside. ENJOY!!!

Looks awesome, I was just looking for something like this. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks
down side is that unless you tagged your movies for streaming during conversion you can only download from your NAS. Can't beat cifs manager for no holds barred streaming
I finally got my VPN set up how I want it and now I am running into problems using the PnP apps out there. I am using mediatomb on my storage server, which is a basic uPnP server. Skifta is able to browse it and see content, but when I try and play something, it launches rock player and hangs and I have to force kill both apps.
upnplay doesn't find the mediatomb one, but it does find a upnp server I made by using windows media play on a windows box on the network. However, when I browse down to a folder containing the content, it just says "invalid action". Many times it will simply not find any upnp servers and there doesn't seem to be a way to force a scan.
What are people using to play videos over upnp? Ideally I would use rock player as these are typically divx encoded avis.
Hm, upnp it seems to work OK when I am local, is rock player really that sensitive to latency?
I use UPnPlay and it works great.

I am using ubuntu with minidnla to stream my videos. I am not sure if reacts differently with different oses but like I said I have no problem what so ever. I use it with my Xbox, PS3, android & iOS devices.
I used to use rock player but I have switched to mobo player.

DLNA/uPNP.. There are plenty of apps on both end to do the job. On the Android side, it will use your existing movie player(s) with a client in the middle to do the DLNA browsing.
Xmbc would be a good start

i have serviio on my pc to share to all the house and then you just need a dlna client. i use imediashare. and use another player to read all kind of sound and video codecs like mxplayer.
I used an NFS Server. Cifs didn't worked very well for me... It always hangs with cifs.
And yes, I mounted the Server shares on 4.2.2.... this is possible with my kernel...
network share folders, use a server app like some said, or just a file manager app to see shared folders on the network and mx player to play
.. um, or again, just install a DLNA server. It's not hard people. Don't have to worry about NFS, CIFS, various network filesystems... It just works.
Two easy solution. Just buy an Asus router with UPnP support, such as the RT-N16. It have usb connection in the back. Connect your harddrive to it, then log into the router menu and enable UPnP. Only thing about this is for some reason when unplug the harddrive to add more files, it didn't update the new files int he library afterward, I had to delete the library files for it to do scan all over.
Or if you want to do it from the PC, there are many apps, but you can use XBMC, add folders to the Videos library, then enable UPnP in the Settings. But you have to keep your PC on all the time.
On your Nexus 7, download XBMC hardware accelerated test build, search for UPnP devices in the Videos section. Or download VPlayer + the UPnP plugin.
Also I want to note XBMC hardware accelerated build have more codecs support than MX Player.
The best solution is to buy an Ouya, connect a harddrive directly to the Ouya, then connect the Ouya to the TV and watch the movie on a larger screen.
Es file manager or cifs

The top pick may be Plex. They have a media server for both Windows and Mac, and apps for many different devices including Android. I use it to watch my TV shows and movies on my tablet and it works very well.
download app ArkMC as well on Android and connect with WI-FI, stream video, photos to any players
Playon works great for me

I use an app called Playon and Playlater. You can buy it for a one time fee and it will stream almost anything, including Hulu, from your PC to your phone, tablet, etc. The Playlater allows you to record a show for later playback on various devices, including off line.
VLC Streamer works pretty good.

I'll throw in Ps3MediaServer. Easy to use.
MediaHouse (free or pro)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dbapp.android.mediahouse&hl=nl
Mx Player (free or pro) (mx player sound is extra loud)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwyLDEsImNvbS5teHRlY2gudmlkZW9wbGF5ZXIuYWQiXQ..
And Serviuo for you pc (Serviio is easy to use with hardsubs)
http://www.serviio.org/
And a headset or speaker because de speakers in the N7 are way to soft
By far, the easiest way to "stream" your videos is using Archos Videoplayer
Its fully hardware accelerated, doesnt require any kind of server to be running on your pc, doesnt have the limitations of DLNA, doesnt need special CIF applications to be installed to see samba shares. Doesnt need any external player like xbmc to hardware accelerate
It simply connects to whichever windows samba share you created on your network with all your videos, index all the videos in the share, automatically collects movieposters and subtitles, and play the videos of almost any format, including HD rips in mkv, with dts or ac3 audio and subtitles over WiFi
you need both the player
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.archos.mediacenter.videofree&feature=search_result
and the codecs for various audio like dts and ac3
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2&feature=search_result
really dont need a server software running, just allow network share of your files and use es file manager to find them and video player of your choice
