I haven't tried this yet, but I was curious if anyone has tried loading Adobe Reader onto the Xoom? I'm guessing we have to side load it since Market won't install it, but I'm curious if it even works.
I have it installed and haven't had any problems with it.
Hoping Adobe released a Reader w/ bookmark support. We can't use these for our Board of Directors without that functionality.
It works but seems to hang on me at times with multi-page PDF's (text and photos).
So obviously you guys had to do this via a sideload of the apk, since Market won't allow an install of the app to the Xoom?
Mine Market-installed when I activated my Xoom (I had it installed on my Droid). Had no issues with it, use it for textbooks.
It works. I bootlegged it from my mytouch 4g running CM7 and sideloaded it onto my Xoom.

Same here.
I market installed on launch day, rooted a few days later and it was unavailable. Quickoffice seems to run better for now anyway.

I side loaded it too, from my gTablet.
Being that it's a free app, I've uploaded it here. I hope that's not breaking any rules.
Meh. I just installed Adobe and I have to say I like EzPDF reader a lot better. It costs a Buck, but it's smoother, faster and has better navigation, IMHO.
Might revisit Adobe reader if they optimize it for tablets.
XOOM'd from the XDA app.

I agree. I was having a hard time reading PDF magazine text in other readers. I switched to EzPDF and it renders text perfectly.

How do you install this file onto the Xoom. I did download, now what?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Just open it through file manager, it should install.
Has anyone tried quickoffice?
I'm using the PDF reader that came bundled with Documents2Go, no problems.

I started using Quickoffice and it's abit faster over ezpdf but ezpdf's layout is nicer.
I tried Adobe Reader, Aldiko ebook reader and the built-in Quick Office and by far Quick Office does the best job of rendering small text to read scanned magazines of these three. My biggest gripe with Quick Office is I wish there was a simple button to advance a page instead of swiping. If the page would snap that would be better.
I have not tried any of the pay options.

Well I'll be damned. I didn't even know it came with quickoffice preinstalled. I just found on the motorola support site that you don't see an app icon for it, but the program launches when you open one of it's supported files.
I was confused as to why i could search the market from the web or my phone and see the adobe reader, but not from my tablet. I use titanium backup pro so I just synced my backups to my dropbox, pulled it up on the Xoom, and got the apk that way. It's working great on the xoom too.

I'm on the very edge of getting a Gtab for general use. I currently have an Ideapad s10-3t with windows 7 but its just not setup for tablet use. The main reason I got the ideapad was to read comics. It does this very well but with the extra heft of the 8 cell battery it can get heavy after reading for a while. So, has anyone tried comic reader mobi or droid comic viewer on this thing?
You REALLY should PM Roebeet on this one if you don't hear from him!! If memory serves correctly that's his bag. He got suckered in and now we all force him to work on development stuff
I have a couple of comics I wanted to read but it was a pain to do on the iphone or touch so they sat for a few years. So last night I used Android Comic Viewer and it worked great. I noticed that it just loads all the comic files which is nice but it crashes or force closes after a bit. If there was a way to only load one at a time maybe that would solve the problem.
So when I did a search before I made this thread I searched for comic and not Comic. After doing a search for Comic I came up with a couple threads and one which covers my question : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864442&highlight=Comic
I have been using the ComiXology reader for about 10 days now. I've only used it for free comics so far. I read there were issues trying to use it for paid comics, but some have had success sideloading purchased comics.
The reader works really well. I'm amazed how the graphics come to life...
Well i'm not Roebeet but I can vouch for ACV or Droid Comic Viewer, works well for me far as most files. I love old school comics like Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and Howard Chaykin's "The Shadow"(1986 DC Ruled the comic book world). The only issue for me is crappy angled screen viewing, and that is a small issue. I havent tried the others however.
I was using Droid Comic Viewer until I started to get a lot of FCs and memory errors on some CBRs. I'm now using JJ Comic viewer and it's opened everything I've thrown at it including the ones that were FCing on Droid Comic Viewer.
Can you open .cbr or .cbz files in comixology? I downloaded it to my phone but didn't see an option to do that. Also does ACV or the other apps support rotating the comic?(not the app, the actual comic in the app).

I believe the ComiXology viewer only supports comics books downloaded/purchased through their site. I haven't purchased any comic books from their site to date. Many free comics are offered each week.
Mobi comic reader works well. Just tried the android comic viewer and I like it also.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going this weekend to my local Sears and picking one up. Now that the source has dropped this will make a nice new toy to keep me occupied for a while.
ACV will crash due to memory issues. If you go into setting and remove the advance load/buffer or whatever it will fix it. It's one of the best free reader IMO.
Comic Reader Mobi is the king, but it's like $15.
I use driod comic viewer for my cbr and cbz files. The low memory setting is under- settings>support> and check off low memory mode.

I agree, I've been using it since I heard about it last week or so and I've found it to be excellent overall. The range of free comics is awesome, most series have at least the first issue free, or a 10 page sample or similar. And the ones to buy are great too. The reading experience is very neat in general, the guided flow is a nice touch so you only see what is currently important; with options to view the full page though.
I've found a few small problems, it can get into a state where it displays a default 'image not found' logo for some pages; after contacting them they said it's simply an out-of-memory issue and that restarting the app/device should fix it. It did and after that first time I haven't seen it since. Also, on the topic of buying comics, yes I have a problem. I mostly read the comics on the GTab, not on my hero for obvious reasons; but cannot purchase comics from my tablet, I have to go to the app on my phone or the web, and then buy, and then log out and back in on my tablet before it'll let me download the new comics. This is obviously kind of annoying, but logging in and out is quick and painless so not too bad.
So yeah, there are problems, but for all of the ones I've mentioned I've submitted feedback to the company and for the first two (not showing pages, deleting comics I no longer wanted from my device) I received prompt feedback by the end of the day with info on how to resolve it and for the final two (not buying comics, having a sync button to avoid the log in/log out issue) they just said they're planning many improvements over the next year. In general, an excellent app and my new favorite. Because they do have an awesome library of comics. Atomic Robo! Sandman! More!
As for ACV, I tried it and it's a very nice, simple interface and worked well for me on the tablet. But I don't have as many .cbr and .cbv files as I used to so I don't use it much. I got most of mine pirated and thought it was time to go legit.
+1 for JJ Comic viewer. After testing a few different readers, this one seemed the most stable and easy to use. Just got an update for it today too, so development is ongoing.

I've tried this one out on TnT-Lite 4.1.0, and it stays up for a second but then FC's. If I'm in the settings menu, it'll FC and go back to the regular menu. If I wait a second, it'll FC out of that and send me back to the desktop. Was there anything in particular you did to make it stable? This is a new install of TNT-Lite, so I'm wondering if it might be something in Spareparts that's causing it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I've always used Aldiko, but it seems to be chopping the first line on each page. Can anyone else comment on their preferred reader apps? I'd prefer an app thats not associated with a content provider, but am open if the app can read non-provider books from my own collections.
I read on a post somewhere here that setting margins to 70 and text to 16 (IIRC) should sort the problem on Aldiko. Don't have mine yet so can't confirm.
Kindle. Locked downish and not landscape friendly, but probably best selection and most relaible.
Nook. Awesome but needs some honeycomb improvements. Probably most promising. Can read epub books.
GBooks. Solid, can sideload, not sure I love it though.
I use all four and that's what I love about options. Most of my content is on Kindle since I own/use a kindle device as well.

I'm a big fan of the Nook software. Can side load epubs from your own collection. Works really well in landscape or portrait.
My Xoom sent this...
Does any of these have the fancy shmancy page turning effects? Not necessary but it'd keep me away from using Google Books on the Xoom once I get mine.
I'm using Aldiko on my Nexus one, and I love it to bits but no fancy animation though.
I have tried all of the above and find Coolreader to be the best. it has various customization options that make it the best reader for me
Left tap to turn page forward (use swipe to go back)
adjustable margins
Swipe down on left margin to reduce brightness (stanza feature that i super lover on ipad)
Lock screen orientation in the app. that way I dont have to lock orientation at system level
Opens epubs directly from Dropbox
In aldiko bring up the menu, settings, text, and increase the margin by one. That will fix your problem on the xoom if that is your only reason to switch.
Personally I use all 4 of the apps depending on what I an reading.
- all 4 can sideload as long as your book is in a supported format.
- I prefer the kindle app for reading technical texts. It has the best options for markup which is useful for reference material and studying.
- the nook app also has markup but not as good as the kindle. I find the nook store to be a little more intrusive but not too bad.
- Google reader is fine for reading fiction and such but the inability to do markup limits its utility for me. For straight reading though I like it.
Aldiko I won't bother giving the highlights to since you use it currently. I would probably settle down on using just aldiko and kindle but sometimes a particular book is only available in a different store.

The Nook software does have page turn effects. Looks just like turning a real page. OK... maybe not JUST like it... but close.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!
I've been using the nook lately as it supports my personal collection, and i can still use it for the books i buy
my issue with nook
- i get force closes quite often not during reading, just when exiting a book, or the app itself.
- no hooks into free books from places like project gutenberg
my issues with adilko
- it runs a background service for some reason, dunno if this is a really valid complaint, but no other reader software does this
- the landscaped page turn is just ugly
- can't read my purchased collection
my issues with kindle
- if im going to be buying books from somewhere I want to buy them from somewhere I can can buy in person and online... browsing through a bookstore is fun
- can't read my collection
- no hooks into free books from places like project gutenberg
my personal problem with moon reader
- too lazy to learn all the neat features
- can't read my purchased collection
Just tried nook on my Android phone. I can side load epubs but the book covers don't show up on the library...

I really liked FBReader, but it doesn't seem to keep text formatting for italics and such. Using Aldiko now, but the margins problem on the xoom is annoying. Hate having to have them so high, looks awful on the large screen.
The nook app seems to be the winner for me. It's really easy to load epubs, no converting or anything and they look good. The only downside is that it will FC when you stop reading a book, though it does seem to bookmark properly. Just a minor annoyance.
I would prefer to use the native Gbooks app but without sideloading it's pretty much useless to me.

What about Google Docs? Does it work in Android browser or Dolphin? It's quite good.

MS Office Live
Has anyone tried MS office for web? It runs very good in chorme on desktop, waiting for my wifi xoom to see how it works in honeycomb browser
Search office live in google to find it i cant post outside links yet
I have paid for Documents to Go and Picsel Smart Office. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like Picsel because it is the only app so far that displays graphics correctly but track changes are not available until the next big release (they have a good customer support). D2G has the track changes but lacks a lot of correct rendering and PPT support is atrocious. I'm sure in the next 2-3 months we'll have a decent selection to choose from!
Both Office Live and Google Docs are too heavy for the Xoom browsers, which is to be expected, they are not exactly optimized for our screen size and lack of desktop horsepower.
They both run, but are very clunky.
I tried ThinkOffice, no go - FC off the bat.
OfficeSuite Pro trial seems to loose the document as you type, then goes into a "Recover your doc screen" - I couldn't even get a paragraph in with this.
I'm open to suggestions here, I really need a solid Doc/XLS app that won't have issues that hinder it - I don't need full fledge office or anything, but I do need something that will let me View/Edit and finding one that does bullet points would be freakin sweet.
I don't need anything for graphics really, I just really need to read pdf and word docs and be able to edit all of them

What do you mean? I use them on my home computer in the same resolution in a browser that scores less in SunSpider than the Xoom stock browser. Is it because of touch? How would it work with keyboard and mouse (or touchpad)? Have anyone tried?

Try them, you can tell that the browsers struggles. More the office live than Google docs, but even with google docs there are things that you just have to have a mouse for. Sadly there is not yet an HTML standard for touch input as a replacement for mouse events. Especially with things like Hover, Drag, and Drop.

I think that the office apps that are available in the market are more than adequate for some light editing and productivity on the go. Its not necessary for these apps to have full compatibility with desktop versions imho. Being far too critical really.

Sure, I can also use my phone for typing but what I need a tablet to do is to recognize basic fonts, comments, and paragraph formatting. I don't think we're expecting too much. If I want a text editor that's different but if you claim to have a "professional" office suite and can't even display the symbol font then something's not right. But I'm glad it works for you!
i also ordered quick office HD and I mainly use powerpoint but quick office keeps auto advancing the slides. I don't want to have to keep pressing the pause button every time I manually advance the slides. Does anyone know how to turn off the auto advancing so that I can just manually advance the slides when I want to?
I have Quickoffice Pro HD. Not too impressed with it. I'm a college student so I bought my Xoom for notetaking in my classes (and because I am an Android freak). It works well enough for notes, but not as I would like it to. Formatting is very weird, and the worst part is no auto correct or spell check. If I am going to type fast and efficiently, I can't be going back every five seconds to touch the screen and change a letter. Very frustrating.
I'm hoping the office tech catches up with tablets soon. Don't really understand why I can't just have the same text functionality in my word processing app that I do in my Gmail or text messages.

Just wanted to throw out that I've been using the Aldiko reader as a PDF viewer and have been pretty happy with it.
I am hoping they work on the speed sometime since the Xoom could probably handle some programing that phones couldnt but I've been pretty pleased with this.
You can import PDF files to your shelf and then setup catalogs.
It also saves your place in the PDF if you leave it.
As I said I have been pretty happy with it.
I haven't tried Aldiko on the Xoom yet, as I had some major issues with it on my CDMA HTC Hero.
I tried ezPDF Reader, and so far it has my vote in its speed and functionality.
One thing to note though, is at certain zoom levels it seems to not "re-focus" the text. Other times it will just hang and continually load the page.
Besides those two nagging issues, I'm glad I spent the dollar on it.
I tried Aldiko, repligo, and ezpdf. ezpdf is by far the best. Both in quality (best for math/physics papers), and in speed.
Aldiko seems to FC a lot on my WiFi Xoom. Does anyone know if the paid version is any better?
I tried Aldiko and find the text to be blurry. I've since switched to ezPDFReader and for the same pdf, ezPDFReader is far clearer

I second the above post. I tried Aldiko and found that it did not render the text very clearly. The built in QuickOffice rendered the page very clearly but I do not like the page scrolling. EZpdf was an Amazon App of the Day a few days ago so I gave that a try. I have been very happy with it and use it exclusively for pdfs now.
I have been looking for a good RSS reader for Honeycomb. I loaded a few and found one called JustReader. I find this reader very good, but everyone has different needs. Here is a quick video of some of the features. You can download a Ad version, which is free. Or purchase it for $2.99 for the Market Place.
Thanks for this. I'd been using Newsr but this is much better. Appreciate the heads up on this. Your video shows its setup very nicely. I now have a new RSS reader that works better for my purpose.
Me too. Love how simple and clean it is.
Your welcome. I had also tried Newsr but also didn't like the layout. JustReader gets better after ever update.

I am using Feedly and i love it.. it's free, it works seamlessly with your Google Reader account (plus Instapaper, Read it Later and many more services) and I personally like the interface better than any other reader I tried.
It used to be a bit buggy in the past, but it has got much better lately.
Personally, I find Pulse a really nice and easy one to use.
Good find here though!
Pulse is good but I tend to make adjustments to my list of blogs all the time, on my PC. I like Newsr's ability to aggregate whole topics since individual blogs don't update as fast as say, Lifehacker or Engadget.
My problem with Newsr is that you cannot read 'read' items, so if it FCs on ya or you accidenly close it, you read that topic and you are forces to use another reader program to get that article.
