Hi all develoers here. Salute to you all for whatever you did for our milestone.
Just a noob question. Is by any chance, by stripping down, or by any magic, is there a possibility to port Android 3.0 for Milestone? Is it possible?
http://developer.android.com already released information and sdk about 3.0. Any expert comments about hardware requirement or any hardware comparisaon details available yet?
I have seen many chinese android tablets and devices with same or lower configuration than milestone running with higher versions like 2.3.3 and some even claiming to have 3.0. (There are already many 3.0 tablets on ebay with lower configuration than Milestone. http://cgi.ebay.in/BRAND-NEW-8GB-7-...31243148?pt=IN_PC_Laptops&hash=item4cf532848c )
Any possible luck? Any experts there?
The old HTC G1 even can run 3.0 (just for fun, nothing more) so i think MS can run 3.0 (but...just for fun, nothing more...^_^).
As sayd, maybe MM can run 3.0 with some hack/tweak/mods, but nothing farther...
Google says that 3.0 is for tablets intended, 2.3/2.4 and so on for mobile
MM can't run Honeycomb, cause we have locked bootloader.
I can't imagine Honeycomb with Froyo kernel

Then why not for fun? When other low-configured devices can run 3.0 seriously, then why not on Milestone, which actually have good confi?

Do you still believe that developers should stick to what google or anyone else said? Most of the new tablets runnung 3.0 have similar configurations and even resolution of milestone.

Do not agree. Milestone is already rooted and thousands of experimets with GB is already done. Seems you dont visit milestone rom developement section. Its always better to get some information before commenting with dead ends.
Anyways thanks all for your inputs.
Are they still trying to Bruteforce open the bootloader? Or did they give up?
It's still open at www.androinc.net, but most of us don't trust the project since the source was never released and it just seems shady.
almost a month over, but no useful information from motorola nor any developers. Seems motorola bootloader will never be cracked in future.

You are wrong. All the latest rom available for MM is over froyo kernel and no GB as you stated. Yes we now run GB on our MM but the Kernel still Froyo. I think YOU should start read the DEV section a bit more instead of saying this things.

Google has clearly stated that Android 3.0 is only meant for tablet use.

Is there a release of this ROM to flash on my Mytouch 3G 32a?
I wanted to test it out and make some modifications to it for educational purposes with my friend.
Also, a cliq too. Would that be possible to flash the same 2.2 ROM for two separate phones or would I need a special one for the two different phones.
Thanks.
Man, not this again. Wait until Android 2.2 gets on a phone officially.
Cyanogen can port it to the g1/mt3g (also the n1 and the droid) but for now all we got is android 2.1
You have to ask another dev to port it to the cliq since the cliq isn't really talked much about on xda.

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into it. But I wasnt looking for a cyanogen release or any other ROM modification release. I wanted the Raw 2.2 file.
Cyanogen won't be releasing anything before its officially released.

Roms based on froyo or gingerbread?
The discussion in the thread "30/Jun r1 (JFB) - MoDaCo Custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy S with Online Kitchen" is a bit confusing so I thought it best to make it a new topic to get it straight.
Will it be possible to make roms based on froyo, gingerbread or any other coming android version, before Samsung makes an update? As I understand psychoace it will be ”near impossible to get roms from other sources like Sense roms or Froyo”. Others are not so sure.
This is important as Samsung is known for its lack of interest in OS updates. Who knows if they will take gingerbread to GS? If they won't can it be done by the really smart guys?
I don't think even HTC will update there top line to V3 (ginger bread). Froyo is coming any way to GS in near future. Now ginger bread should be possible too as GS is power full enough to run. When? we should wait and see. Nexus just got updated to 2.2.
Will see how things go in future.
Samsung has released there kernel sources and there software sources. I haven't had a chance to look in to it deeply but if it has the code of the drivers etc.. it should be possible to merge (with some work obviously) sources and to compile froyo.

But don't those drivers only work with 2.1 and just simply won't with any version higher unless samsung releases new source and drivers for 2.2 and then 3.0. So if say samsung never releases anything any source/drivers that work with 3.0 then you would be out of luck to actually get everything to work.

That is true but if you have the full sources you are able to look what the differences are and maybe patch those by your self. Assume a wlan driver is using an function that has changed or is gone in 2.2, then you can try to patch that by finding the new one for it to work with. If you don't have the sources it's much harder to do those kind of things.
As I sad you have the sources so you can play by your self even if samsung does not do anything. It does not mean it's easy and it does not mean it can be done fast. But it does mean it could be done.

Can they be decompiled and made to work? Of course!
Will someone be motivated to do all this work? Unknown.
Besides drivers arent the only issue to getting a new version of Android on a phone. If you dont have source for any proprietary userland daemons/apps (like radio?) that communicate with the hardware you will be SOL on that as well.
MMMMMMMMM if we can do it for the G1 we can do it SGS...the question is when and how much work. The Galaxy S will be Samsung's flagship device for A YEAR so I'd hope to get Gingerbread...unless Samsung are really stupid. Especially with a lot of US launches, they'll be able to relaunch with Gingerbread as it comes is my hope.

Who told you that??? The source code of the GPU as well as every other coprocessor is there.
The two .o file that started this all fiasco are ok and you as long as the make file include them in the build they would work perfectly.
All they have inside is a simple elf code to tell the s3c*** to do whatever it needs to do. A source code wouldn't have been beneficial as it would have to be compiled differently for a different ARM instruction set .

But when you need drivers for 2.2 the source code would be optimal because these drivers are not going to work without some hacking.
They are going to work as they are non kernel bound ELF files.
Guys this isn't a driver ,if it was a kernel module ( or "driver" s you call it) it would have been a .ko file and had a slightly different structure ( use readelf on a kernel module and then on this to see the difference). So no matter what it is when can use the compiled version as it not kernel bound
From quick inspection it seems like the injection code for the s3c*** . so basically its there so the kernel could reference to it when the code tells it to do so . So Basicly all we have to do is put it in the proper place when building the kerne.
So please DON'T PANIC
well the TP2 just got 2.2 FroYo (2.1 has more working drivers ATM).. but if we have it, how would it be different for the SGS to get FroYo?
You need to remember that while other companies can update kernel quite easily ( all the work is done for them by the chip manufacturer and some member of the community ) this isn't possible here as this is a chip only used in one android/other linux platform device and the company making the device also make the chip.
So give them a few weeks to work on it

Did I say custom rom? No i said specifically non samsung based roms on a samsung device. That custom rom is based off of a Samsung rom.
This is the closest we have got to a Hero rom on a Samsung device.

He couldn't get Rosie to boot so who knows what other problems he would of had after that (from the picture you can see he never got any network connection)
So there don't say I didn't give you any hope.
Froyo is offical. That's good, but we need to be looking past it to Gingerbread.
Froyo is announcedm confirmed, and now dated for the end of September, and that's great. But to me, that's not the question we need to be asking Samsung anymore, we need to be thinking past that.
The question people need to be asking Samsung, so we can get them on the record committed to it now, is will you release a Gingerbread update for the phone as long as the hardware is capable of supporting it. The OS is only 2-3 months from being unveiled if Google sticks to their time table, and if the rumors are true it'll be a much bigger overhaul than 2.1-2.2 is.
So unless we want our phones to be outdated before the end of the year, we need to start making a push as a community to get a commitment from Samsung to support not just the OS that was released 4 months ago, but also the much bigger one that's right around the corner.
2.2 is good.. proves everyone wrong who said "ooh its Samsung, of course they won't release Froyo."
but somehow, I doubt that samsung will somehow not upgrade SGS to 3.0. If they do, it might be a few months (at least) after everyone else gets it. The reason is, they could have new flagship devices out that they wanna push to the mass-markets, so putting gingerbread on that will boost the sales.
However, considering that they marketed the SGS so well, and have it well on its way, they might just put gingerbread on it
seriously, i see ads for SGS EVERYWHERE online.

Hi,
I am developing Marketplace apps and would like to test them on older Android versions (at least 1.6, better 1.5) for maximal market coverage. I searched the forums, however could not find whether the Milestone can be downgraded to either 1.6 or 1.5. Is it possible? If so, could you please point me to some tutorial or other information, e.g. which versions are available?
Bye,

no, it is not possible, because Milestone started with v2.0....for donwgrading you would need a CustomROM with 1.5 or 1.6 kernel, but that's impossible due to locked bootloader in Milestone

Unfortunately the emulator performance will not cut it for me, as some things will be done in OpenGL which I doubt will run properly given the generally slow speed of the emulator.
The device has not been shipped to me yet, so I do not know with which version it will come... in case that's never than 2.0, will I be able to downgrade to 2.0?

yes, downgrading to any previous version (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1) is no prob...you just have to flash the SBF-Files with RSDLite...as I am not allowed to paste a link here, just put 'and developers milestone' in google...the second one called 'sbf:milestone [And Developers]' will lead you to all FW-Versions of Milestone
you can downgrade your milestone only to Android 2.0
Below that i dont think that this is possible
Your best bet may well just be to buy a cheap second-hand G1/Dream, or Magic/MyTouch, or Hero. These devices can (with various official and unofficial firmwares) run pretty much the full range of 1.5 upwards for testing purposes.
I had a look through the Android development section and couldn't really find anything above 2.2. My GF has a captivate and she's finally willing to do away with the carrier installed stuff.
And IF there are no 2.3 ROMs (which really doesn't make any sense because I've been running 2.3 on my DZ since the start of January), what are some of the better 2.2 ones?

Serendipity is the best one I've found, Mike has a great eye for design, and he and Chance have great ideas on functionality. They pay close attention to detail and update the ROM frequently with easily flashed .zips in recovery (no wiping involved unless it's a major update). It's built on 2.2.1.

Care to enlighten the masses on this? Cyanogen's been trolling (IMO) on his wiki:

"NOTE: As of right now CyanogenMod is not available for the Samsung Galaxy S family. Please check the wiki or the Samsung Galaxy S sub-forum for updates."
But then again, I suppose if you have a large amount of expertise and win in your arsenal, you could fit all of the witchcraft to the Captivate, unless I'm a complete noob and Cyanogen got a ROM hidden away that I'm not aware of.
Serindipity is one that I've been looking into. I have her phone ready to rock and roll, rooted + CWM. Just need to decide on a ROM
I find it strange that the Galaxy S lineup still doesn't have a publicly available 2.3 ROM... considering the first device to ship with 2.3 was the Nexus S. IIRC it has a near identical hardware set as the Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, I9000 etc.

As for it not making sense, The whole reason you have been able to run it is that HTC likes putting the source code up as to where we are still trying to get it from Samsung. Heck 2.2 official just dropped to day. lol

Basic info about my device:
Model : HTC Incredible S
Android Version : 4.0.4
HTC sense version : 3.6
Software number : 4.12.720.1
I have started to feel that my phone is getting slow and I read about the benefits of rooting. So, I am planning to root my device. While going through the online tutorials, I came to know that once I root it, I won't get updates from HTC and there are also some risks of ending up with a bricked phone. Some posts said that after the recent android update, the old methods of rooting won't work.
Can someone please post a link or method of rooting my device in easiest way possible? I'd also like to know whether android version/looks will remain same after rooting? As per posts, I won't be able to get HTC updates. What are my options of staying updated in case my device supports new android versions? I kinda like the UI of my phone. Is it possible to root my phone without altering anything else?
Detailed answers would be better.

There won't be any more updates from HTC that's for sure. I mean I once read that HTC plans on stopping the One X after 4.2.2. I think HTC was already extremely generous to give us 4.0.4. Besides, Sense 3.6 is the crappy version of Sense 4 anyways and Sense 4 looks nicer in almost every aspect in my opinion.
Rooting is as basic unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev.com and flashing a custom recovery. However, you will notice that some people have something called S-OFF. Unlike just unlocking the bootloader (which still leaves S-ON), S-OFF grants you permission to certain parts of a particular partition (which I don't seem to remember but what I say here should be enough) and in that way, you do not need to flash the boot.img within each custom ROM (which is probably, the biggest limitation of leaving your phone at S-ON). This is quite a bit to swallow but you'll understand more as you go along rooting and flashing custom ROM plus a bit of Google searching on the side.
As for guides, look at the top of the General Section (you're in it right now!) and everything that's labelled [GUIDE] should be good to use.
To answer the last question, yes it is possible to root the phone and leaving everything as is although there is absolutely no point in doing so. Unlocking the bootloader WILL WIPE your phone clean (ie game data, sms, call logs.....). It would be best to just start fresh. If you are so intent on staying on Sense 3.6, then I would recommend you to either Android Revolution HD or Blackout ROM which you can find more information on in the Android Development section.

Depends on what you're looking for really. CyanVivo10.1 is Android 4.2.2. Id say I'm only using CyanVivo10.1 for the sole purpose of having a theme engine plus theres always more free RAM on AOSP ROMs which Id like since multitasking its pretty essential to me.
However in terms of battery and overall performance Id have to ViperVivo is best. Nik Project_X_Rebirth is also a very good choice but the lock screen ticks me off -.- My favourite Sense ROM is either Blackout or KingCobra although the latter has had reports of not booting past the splash screen for a number of people.
I don't think HTC is generous when it comes to sending updates. There's no official JB release for the Sensation. The Galaxy S2 got it though. Typical HTC...

Has it ever occured to you that the S II probably has a CPU that natively supports ion?? And that's why they have Jellybean where as the Sensation does not?? HTC isn't gonna work their bums off to get a device to support ion when they have the newer phones such as the HOX and the One.

Detailed answers would be better.

okay, after reading your statement, I have to tell you a thing, rooting out HTC IncS which running on Android 4.0.4+Sense 3.6 is impossible (guys, correct me if I'm wrong) If you want to root it, you have to downgrade it back to Android 2.3.5, which is a VERY troublesome thing.. here's a guide might help you understand something about rooting our HTC IncS! >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987687

rooting and S-OFF are not the same thing. Rooting is just unlock bootloader and flash custom recovery. That is certainly possible on any android OS. S-OFF on the other hand, you need to downgrade back to 2.3.3 (in order to get HBOOT 1.13) and then run revolutionary to get S-OFF

Sorry, but it is possible to gain root access on the HTC ICS/Sense 3.6 ROM without the downgrading option that you referenced.
Unlocking the bootloader using the procedure at HTCDEV.com will allow you to install a custom recovery such as CWM or 4EXT and then you can flash SuperSu which will allow apps to request root access. With a custom recovery in place, a user can also flash a custom ROM, but the drawback is that /boot partition is mounted R/O in recovery mode, so you manually have to flash the boot.img of the custom ROM in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Gaining S-OFF is another form of 'unlocking' the bootloader and giving you full access to all of the partitions as well as the radio. S-OFF by itself does not necessarily provide your apps with root access. That is dependent on the ROM that is installed.

Oops, yes, you're right! S-off would need to roll back to Gingerbread, while rooting doesn't need. I mixed it up :silly:

I was looking for some ROMs and this one caught my eye. CyanVIVO 10.1

What do you suggest? Which one is better?

CyanVIVO 10.1 is amazingly fast and smooth. Although, don't expect the same battery life as sense, as cm is not optimized for or phone.
If you want sense, Nik Rebirth is pretty good.
I personally hate sense as it is ugly, but it has its benefits such as battery life and more widgets.

Well, if you want so stick with Sense, you should try out ViperVIVO and Nik's Project X best Sense Based ROMs I know

Don't go for ViperVIVO because
a) The download link has been removed
b) And even if you do find the link somehow, Team Venom have officially stopped supporting or device, so don't expect any updates soon.
Click thanks if I helped you out!

Uh no, the download link is still there. Nevertheless its still a great ROM with virtually no bugs so the only thing you could be improving is battery life and performance and if you still want more then you would be very greedy to do so because it already performs well in both.

However in terms of battery and overall performance Id have to ViperVivo is best. Nik Project_X_Rebirth is also a very good choice but the lock screen ticks me off -.- My favourite Sense ROM is either Blackout or KingCobra although the latter has had reports of not booting past the splash screen for a number of people.

lol I never got king cobra to boot
About lockscreen: push the lockscreen from a previous version and fusion.apk cause that is where the lock ring hides. I am not a fan of the new layout either so that is what I did

GS2 is like half done, yes its there but it is not very good. There are still UI elements from ICS and even GB and half the things stop working

Nup your argument doesn't work cause VilleC2 (One S with snapdragon s3) has JB Sense
It has the exact same chipset as the Sensation but runs at a higher clock. Its got a linux 3.4 kernel with JB Sense from HTC so it definitely supports it.

I see the links are still up. But I said that there are not going to be updates, which apart from improvements, include new features. Don't get too defensive bro
