I was messing around and forgot to back up my vending.apk before i deleted it. Now i haven't been able to get any market apks i find to work so i am without a market.
Anyone know how i can get this back?
I've tried using some vending.apks i've download like an ones from this thread:
androidtablets.*net*/forum/nook-color-technical/8512-how-setup-new-market-fix-lack-apps-showing-portrait-mode (remove astriks around .net)
But they either get an error through ADB while installing or when it installs and i try to open it up it opens and says "Loading" and then immediatly closes.
I installation errors and certificate errors when trying to install through ADB. Can't find anything on how to get around it.
Bump +
I'm not really sure why you would delete it in the first place *facepalm*. However, the only solution I can seem to find would be to just wipe everything back to stock, re-root it and go about the normal route. Search around for the process to go back to stock and whatnot.
I facepalmed already. It was definitely a stupid point in my career. I hope thats not what i have to do, but i guess i could back up everything i have, go to stock, re-install, then put everything back on.
honestly that's probably the only route at this point. Market is really weird on the nook color. I'd post the link to the requisite threads that talk about similar issues but my post count isn't high enough yet. From what I've gone through, going back to stock, re-rooting, and the whole shebang should only take about an hour. Good luck!
Well i might just go for Honeycomb then. Is honeycomb fast when on internal?
If all you want is the market, you can download the newest market APK from my webserver. The link is:
http://www.r00tyou.com/android/tools/Vending(new).apk
To push it to the device simple connect the device to your computer using ADB and type the following in the console:
adb devices
adb install \path\to\the\downloaded\apk.apk
Click to collapse
Wait for it to successfully transfer over and install.
The viola, you have the newest market APK.
ALSO, if you are wanting a pretty stable ROM I would use the nookie froyo. However, if you are wanting to do some experimentation I suggest loading up the latest CM7 nightly. I am currently running CM7 Nightly 17 with Bluetooth.

Ive been reading around for about 2 weeks and so today I tried to root my hero. I ried frist to go the long way useing the android-sdk-windows route but it didnt work so I then went for the z4 root method as seen in a earlyer post. I installed the app. I clicked on root in my phone and it did its thing I guess? It didnt ask me to do a temp install or a perm install. It finally rebooted and all my apps were still on there from android market and it was running horribly slow so did a factory reset. I can see superuser app. I downloaded rom manager and every time I go to click install rom from sd card it says you must install clockworkmod recovery fist and so forth. I am just getting really lost in this hole process. All I wana do is get rid of the damn stock apps... make my hero run faster and if a rom is pretty much a custom background and stuff then install that. At this point I dont even know if the damn thing is rooted or not and I havent been able to find a clear answer on how to root ANYWHERE on any site that will work. It seems 2 different methods ive tried both have failed. If anyone can help that would be great.
I'm not a dev but i had a hard time my first time too. So did you look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674833. and have you tried to see if you can adb in cmd on your computer? If so and nothing happened and your phone in working like crap now then find the news 2.1 ruu use that then start over. I used this tread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291). Hope this helped and good luck!!
The lag u experienced is a known issue when u reboot simply run z4root again and it should fix it and clockworkmod recovery is the custom recovery u need to install in order to use a Rom and u flash it through Rom manager and if u just want to remove system apps try root explorer from the market its 4$ but well worth it

The laginess is normal after z4root...tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, install it (It takes a bit since it has to download it first). Note that if it doesnt do anything when u press it, uninstall it, reboot your phone and download it again from the Market, that was the only issue i had, everything else went by smoothly.
Just follow what I did on here
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875351) and feel free to keep asking questions, i am new to this also. Looking back, its a process that should take longer than 30 minutes.
I put the step by step of the process on the first post as an edit.
Ok, so I promise I've tried to search for a solution, but I really don't even know where to start. Please let me apologize if this has been discussed at exhaustion, but the guys I've asked so far have not seen this issue. Perhaps some of you have.
I'm going to list EVERYTHING I can think of that I've done. Please tell me what I've done wrong.
1. After picking up my NC last night, I tried running the Non-Root SDcard method of running Froyo to try it out. I tried running Rom Manager but wasn't able to do much. I tried Flashing CWM and feel that might have been a mistake. Hopefully, someone can reassure me that was not a problem.
2. I was unable to get GApps (Market most importantly) to show.
2a. After Flashing CWM and removing the SD card, I found that if I tried to force the 1.1.0 update, it would error out and put me into Recovery. That was something I assumed would not be possible, since I was of the understanding that the Non-root SDcard method was restricted solely to the SD card and didn't actually touch the Onboard memory.
3. Assuming the SDcard method might be limited to not having Market access and was more of a pre-root preview. I moved on to actually Root my NC. I did the whole, SD-image method and let my NC auto-reboot. The method I followed didn't mention anything about skipping the Google Account step. So, I tried that with some difficulty and had to back out. I never tried the whole Youtube account sync. I accessed the Market, but none of my downloads will actually go through. Tried multiple reboots, but no luck.
4. I tried to root again to see if something went awry. This time, I didn't have to go through the Android Setup steps??? But, I went ahead and logged into YouTube. Then, I went to Gmail Accounts>Account Setting, but each time it just causes my NC to reboot. Market still doesn't actually download anything.
I know it probably seems like I'm trying to many things, but I'm trying to discover the source of the problem, but behind each corner is another problem. I can't think of anything I'm doing wrong. I'm becoming very agitated. This was supposed to be a simple process, but it is not at all right now.
5. Now, as a last ditch effort, I tried to UnRoot my phone with the 8-Boot-Interruptions method. Problem is, instead of restoring the device to stock, it puts me back into CWM recovery.
Is it possible that Flashing CWM has irreversibly imprinted itself on my NC and I can not get past it to actually move forward with the Market and such? Is there any way to reverse the Flashing of CWM?
Thanks a ton in advance.
My guess is CWM writes to the system folder no matter if it has booted from SDCard or not...
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
I believe that is the correct set of instructions, if not, my apologies.
migrax
For reference, I'm running B&N 1.0.1 and used auto-nooter-2.12.25.
It sounds like you might want to navigate overt to the development forum and do a bit of reading. I'm unsure why you flashed CWM onto your nook, but everything is easily fixable. It really depends on what state you want your nook to be in when it's all said and done. There's a thread in the development forum about restoring back to stock, doing so will remove cwm and let you start over. This is probably the best way to go as the current state of yur nook is questionable. Once you have stock working your best bet for the most functionality is rooting, and the easiest way to do that is autonooter. Definitely read the threads more than once before attempting any of this so you will know what to expect before it happens.

Just read through that link. Looks very promising. Dont think I'll have a chance to do it tonight, but I will report back ASAP. I'm hoping to get back to stock and then go straight through the root process as intended. I really feel that my unintentional CWM Flashing experience is the root of my frustration.
I'm hopeful that this will be the end of it.
Thanks again.
Thanks a BUNCH!!! It all worked out. Getting the .img out of the .tar.gz was the most difficult, but once I figured out how to use 7-zip, all was well.
I'm now rooted and have full Market/Gmail access. I'm a very happy boy
I have been looking through the threads, and havent seen what I am looking for. So hopefully i will not get flamed to bad. I tried to install mikeymikes GR12, I got through the first stage of downloading the gingerbread rom to the phone through odin, but then it went south. I lost root and was unable to get back to the download screen. I then tried to use the all in one tool to root the phone, and that put me to the recovery screen where i could not use the ok button, just the volume up and down buttons. I just managed to get the download screen to come back, but i cant get anything else to work. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go from here.
Thank you for your help
I would go back to stock first. I believe your problem lies in the bootloaders. There are two bootloaders in the beginning and if you don't have the gingerbread ones installed, you won't install gingerbread properly.
I would use DesignGears One Click Odin to go back to stock and load the Froyo drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. Make sure you open up Odin first before plugging in your phone, then hit the Start button.
Once that is done, you can try again, but read about getting the GB bootloaders installed properly before you try to flash a GB ROM. Any of the GB ROM instructions should get you there. Just make sure you know all the steps before you try it again.
Good Luck!!
I don't see why you would be flamed for your question. That is what Q&A is for and you are in a bad spot. The biggest thing to remember is to be as specific as possible when you post a question. This includes what you were trying to do, what steps you took, what was the result, when did the problem occur (which step) and what you have tried to do, if anything to fix it.
One more thing. It is always possible that the USB cable is bad or that the USB port you are plugging into (on the computer) isn't working properly. You might also want to plug into a different USB port.
Sorry these posts are broken up, but as I'm coming up with ideas, I'm posting.
Here's something you should try:
(I wrote this for Team Phoenix, hence the sig.. But it works the same with every ROM. There's a link to a very nice tutorial I suggest you follow).

Me too. If we can ... Remember not all things can be recovered from so please read everything twice before ever touching your phone.
10-4. My next question is: where do I get froyo from. Kies sees my eclair version as unregistered, so it wont update. And my ota sees an update is needed, but when i tried, the area im in has crappy signal, so the update failed and now i have to wait 24 hours to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again
are you planning on flashing a custom rom?
if so updating to official froyo is A HUGE WASTE OF TIME
EDIT:are you Canadian by chance? if so check this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
I only plan to root the official froyo right now, that is what I had before I jacked it up. I am not Canadian.

Going on official froyo will get you the signature failed error (which you need the 3e recovery fix if you ever want to flash a custom ROM).
So, basically, if you want more than 2.2 official release. We suggest you don't update. If you're perfectly fine staying on 2.2 Froyo, then there's no problem lol
As for Kies, you shouldn't have any problem using Kies mini. Other than that, there is a 2.2 flash around here. I'm sure you'll find it doing a little search
I had root on my official froyo for a couple of months without a problem. Right now i cant get my phone to go into download mode, it only goes to the battery screen. If i can get to download i can make some headway

If the battery pull way isn't working. You could always go read on abd. It send SU commands and you could get your phone in downlaod mode that way.
Is there an easy way to get adb without getting the sdk. I downloaded the sdk and it keeps saying i need java, when i download the java crap it says the same thing.

Did you reboot your pc?
Yes i did, no change
i believe you need microsoft .net framework installed also...
easy adb setup link in my sig.
files and everything needed to get going.
you may want to build a jig yourself or buy one online just in case:
MOD EDIT: No links to commercial products please.
Please excuse my ignorance. I followed a youtube tutorial and was able to root my Nook to Honeycomb. But now, i have no ebook reader and when i try to download one from the android market or it doesn't install. I successfully downloaded the kindle app from the amazon store but once it loads, it crashes sometimes just on launch and sometimes when clicking the free books the the kindle app came with.
Another issue im having is I have no clue how to access files on my SD card. Even if i connect my nook to the comp, it recognizes that a hard drive was connected but it doesn't mount so i can transfer files to and from it. Sorry for the noob questions.
Not sure if this helps but in "About Phone" the Kernal Version is 2.6.29-omap1. Build number is sdk-eng Honeycomb Nook eng.rbrune.20110131.162619 test keys
Thanks
Honeycomb port is just really in its infant stage right now, I would suggest you going to CM7 and familiarize yourself with all the settings before jumping to HC.

I am thinking you are having some terminology confusing. Putting on the Honeycomb build is not rooting; it is flashing a rom. You can root your factory OS, which will let you add things like the android Market and such. Since you are already at the point where you can flash a new ROM, you can just flash the CM7 build just like you did the Honeycomb build.
I agree with everyone. Flash to CM7. I tried Honeycomb but didn't like it. I had the same problem with apps not installing. For me, I had to turn the NC off after a download and back on to see the apps installed. CM7 is running awesome on my NC. I have both Kindle and NC ereader apps running without issues.

You're right. I have all the terminology screwed up. Its my first time doing anything like this and to top that, I've never even owned an android phone. Anyway, Gonna attempt to go to CM7. Is it the same process? just put the CM7 zip file on the sd card that i just imaged? Would you be so kind to post a link with the latest file? If not, I will search and hope I get the latest. Thanks for your replies. I appreciate it.

Yes.. just download the CM7 from cyanogens website. Click the Nook Color under "All Supported Devices". Get the latest stable one.. 7.0.3. Try the nightlies out when you get bored of a functional new device.

Cool. So I downloaded and installed CM7. Looks like it loaded nicely but then i keep getting this popup "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" Any suggestions? Thanks!
EDIT: BTW, did I have to reformat before installing CM7? I just installed it right over HC and the few apps I had downloaded before were still on the NC plus my wireless settings were still there and everything.
Ok. I was too desperate. So I went ahead and reformated then reinstalled CM7. Everything is working nice and smooth. My only issue now is I don't have the android appstore to download apps. None of the google apps are installed either. I can't even get the amazon app store cause it wants to send me an sms with the download. Thanks again for the help guys!

Since I'm on my nook on the xda app I don't have a link handy, but you need to flash a file called gapps (Google apps) after a normal cm7 install. You should be able to find the file linked here our in the cyanogenmod.com site.
After that, it should prompt you to set up all of your normal google accounts.

Yup. I downloaded the gapps-ga-20110307-signed zip file and what i'm not sure of is if I installed it right but here's what i did. This is what i did 5. Anyway, it stated that it was installed successfully but i got nothing. No gmail or anything. Its as if i didnt install anything at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Do you have wifi turned on? I believe that you need to turn on the wifi to get the market app to show up.
Yes...I have the wifi on. weird. Any other suggestions? Thanks

OK....Im gonna give this one last try when I get home tonight. If this doesn't work, I think i'm just gonna give up and restore it back to Nooks factory default. I got this for my wife and she loved the way the Nook displayed the books much better than the 3rd party apps I found on amazon store. Sucks cause I know the Android store has the Nook app but I can't get to it and for some reason, I can't download it from the Barnes & Noble site. Oh well. Thanks for your help.
Stevemp....worked like a charm. Couldn't get the nook app to work properly so i just bought moon reader and its perfect. My only issue now is that when I connect my nook to my pc via usb, the pc doesn't recognize it. I thought I bookmarked some instructions a some thinks i needed to download onto my pc and what not but I can't find it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Windows only sees the first partion on the sdcard. I use Samba File Sharing from the Market to transfer files. It's wireless and easy to use. Go into settings and set your password and you should be good to go.

When you connect the NC via USB, do you see a USB symbol in the notification bar? If so, pull it down & you can enable USB connection to the PC. Be sure to eject when finished.

I used the method outlined in this post to get the Market and Apps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
I noticed that some people had difficulty booting into Recovery Mode while installing the Apps package. I did too, so what I did was just continued to hold down the 'n' throughout the entire startup, rather than releasing it, and then gapps installed fine
I now find that I hardly boot to the NC OS any longer to use it, I just run the CyanogenMod almost all the time.
I have searched this site for a few days trying to find some sort of answer...okay well an answer i can understand. but perhaps my n00banism is getting in the way. I've broken my nookcolor but it's not broken. yep. exactly. Here is my story:
I was able to root my nook thanks to theunlockr.com. I followed those directions and was able to get a nightly of cm7 (which i ran on my device for 3 months or so). when i tried to update to the stable version I kept getting an error message that the file was bad...i forget the exact wording. SOOO enter me, and my awesomeness. I found tipstir.the-talk.net and an option to load honeycomb on my nookcolor (which seems to be running fine btw). Somehow during that my clockwordmod rom manager was missing. I hadn't yet loaded the gap pack so i went online to the android market and downloaded it. yay. I tried to 'reboot into recovery' to load or 'flash'...but it just reboots normally.
I have since found that the kindle app and aldiko (which is the only app i've found that will read my old sony ereader books) just wont run on honeycomb which makes it all but useless to me since i use this primarily as an ereader.
I dont know what to do to fix the situation that i've found myself in. I think i read somewhere that you can load cm7 on an sd card and run it...but how then would I fix the situation that i've gotten myself into?
yhea...i have just enough interest in these sort of things to get myself in trouble, but not enough practical knowledge to get myself out of the pickles. SO please help the lame and powerless!
Thanks so much
Mikaela
The most surefire fix is to make a cwm card, flash back to your stock firmware, then either use cm7 on the card or install it on your nook(emmc). Basically, treat it like you bricked it. There are quite a few threads that can tell you step by step how to do it.

Edit : go to the stickies tab and look, there's a thread with all the info you need
Have you tried to download Rom manager, and then download clockworkmod from within clockworkmod. Then reboot into recovery from Rom manager. Probally, just trying to help.

I went back to theunlockr.com and reset back to factory settings and essentially re-rooted the device from there. =) i dont know why i didn't think of that in the first place but *someone* pointed that option out to me. thanks for the help!
