help making bootanimation.zip - Android Themes

hey guys , *trying* to get my first boot animation up and running . whenever i render video in Photoshop to get my multiple .pngs , they are way too big . my bootanimation.zip ends up being over 13mb . from what i hear, the reason it is not booting is because there is a size constraint there. im no photoshop wiz , but i read i can mess with optimization settings to reduce size . however , every instructional i find is 3 years old and no longer applies in cs5 .
can someone hold my hand and explain to me how to get the size of this monster down? thanks.

you have a couple options. if you are making an animation from video, you can try removing every other frame. i've done this many times and it usually has no effect on the animation.
another way to reduce image size (or even in addition to the above) would be to use software to compress the png files. i use png gauntlet. it is lossless compression, so there shouldn't be any loss of image quality. also, it has a very user friendly interface, as opposed to pngcrush, for example, which is a command line utility.

Like stated above. Your png's don't have to be the size of the screen. You just set them up proportional to the screen oriantation and then you set the size in the desc.txt with the first 2 numbers.

oh, and i'm sure you came across this in your reading, but make sure you do not compress the zip file (in 7zip, select the store option)

Thanks guys . My issue was compressing the zip . Put it in store.mode and it boots now ... but soooo choppy . Its like butter when I play it in Photoshop

try messing with the fps in desc.txt
if you need any more help, i wouldn't mind giving you a hand if you can post the zip

I have a Samsung galaxy s . We have a 30fps cap on bootanimations I hear... might be that way for all phones . But I don't think that's the issue . I look at the cm7 boot animation, which is gorgeous and smooth , and its at 24 fps. So I dunno . I will post what I have shortly to see if I'm missing something stupid

[Q]Icon Quality Reduction

So I've been creating icons in photoshop to match Windows 7 widgets i found on these forums. I noticed that the icons I create are of MUCH lower image quality than the widgets.
I look at the icons I created on my laptop and compare them to the ones on my phone's screen, and they look 10x worse on my phone!
So I decide to check the file size. The .pngs I created on my laptop are around 100kb while the same .pngs transferred to my sd card are less than half that size!
Is there anyway I can get the images from my laptop to the phone without compression?
When you export/create the PNGs from Ps, are you making sure to set the quality to full? By default, it will compress a good amount.
Yup quality is set to max. Images look fine on my laptop, its only on the phone where the image quality and file size is reduced.
How are you getting them onto your phone? Just transferring via USB? Also, are you using the stock Gallery app anywhere in the equation?
Yes just through usb. Doesnt matter what app i view it through the image is certainly of lesser quality and smaller file size

Nook Color preset for Handbrake

I created a preset in handbrake for the nook color. I've used it for several videos and they've all worked really well.
I'm not sure how to export the presets exactly. what I've done is copy my user_presets.xml file and rename it to nook_preset.txt (forums won't let me upload an xml file.)
It's the only preset in the file, so you should be able to add the preset node to your existing user_presets.xml or replace the file completely if you haven't defined any yourself.
Here's a step by step:
1) locate your presets file (this link handbrake presets will help you.)
2) rename it from user_presets.xml to user_presets.xml.bak
3) copy one of my attached files (use 0.9.5 for the latest version of handbrake) to the same directory
4) rename it to user_presets.xml
If you had any presets already, this will remove them. If you want them back, just copy them from user_presets.xml.bak into the new user_presets.xml.
UPDATE: The above instructions are not necessary. The newest version of Handbrake includes an import option under the presets menu. I've attached a zip file that contains the nook.plist file to import. This should work on all platforms.
UPDATE 1/9/2011: Added revised preset for Handbrake version 0.9.5
UPDATE 1/10/2011: Added step-by-step instructions.
UPDATE 2/9/2011: Added a plist file.
UPDATE 2/27/2011: New nook.zip - Added resolution and aspect ratio settings to the plist file

Can you list some of the changes that you used. I'd like to compare. Thx.
I used the regular ipod setting, but I changed the resolution to 854x480. I turned off all video processing, and set the audio to 48 bit / 128kbps aac.
UPDATE: I forgot that I also changed the video bitrate. Upping it to 1100 instead of 700[? I don't remember.]
Wouldn't using the iPad preset and changing the 1024x768 to 1024x600 be better?
good idea to post them, i was just about to do the same, and the good news is that i have almost identical settings. im just using slightly higher quality audio (160kpbs) and leaving it on Stereo always, everything else looks exactly the same!

I'm not sure if that preset uses "high profile" or not. the NC only supports "baseline profile", and I know that's what the ipod setting uses.
The encodes from HD content look brilliant using this setting. I'm not sure how it could be better.

If there's no discernible difference with 480 vs 600 then forget I said anything.
Using 1024x600 would not be "better" in any way. If you want to use the hardware decoding from the NC's default app (Movies when invoked from Astro but I think a part of Gallery), the video must be H.264 Baseline, AAC audio, resolution less than 854x480.

I didn't think about the resolution you specified because you could just make the iphone profile 1024x600.
If I had understood your intention, I would have made you aware that the max video accelerated rez on the NC is 854x480 in my initial reply. Instead, I just focused on your use of the ipad profile.
I don't have personal experience; but I think I read somewhere that H.264 @ 1024x600 is a slide show.
Tested with 720p Top Gun and looks perfect. Sound is a little low, but what I've read is that there is no way to adjust the audio gain in Handbrake. Thanks.
From the nook user guide
"Mpeg4 Simple Profile up to 854x480
H.264 Baseline profile up to 854x480"
I also use "DropFolders". It uses HandBrake, but adds a watch folder & destination folder. Any video you drop in the watch folder starts DropFolder & it converts it & places the converted file in the destination folder. Very convenient. Start DropFolder first & then move the file to the watched folder.
Cheers,
kev

Ah, so it dosnt support hardware decoding past 480 huh? Good to know. I was wondering why it kept failing at 600. Turns out it's just because I cant read instructions! Still, I was running at 400 and it looked alright. Glad to know I can indeed push it a bit further.
What's the average file size you guys are ending up with? I got a 32gb card begging for movies...
It is about 530MB per hour.

Do we expect this 480P limitation to be lifted once a proper 2.2 ROM comes out? Or is this just the limitations of the hardware?

It's a hardware limitation.

you are correct that you cannot adjust the gain. however, (you may be aware of this already,) you can set the DRC on the Audio tab to compress the audio, which will essentially raise the quieter sections to match the louder ones. this will not make the loudest parts any louder though.
SubStation Alpha subtitles
For anybody trying to convert MKVs with SSA subtitles (i.e. sources such as anime), I had a heckuva time trying to figure out how get hard subs written to the MP4 output. Apparently the official stable release of Handbrake doesn't support SSA subs but all you need to do is download the latest nightly build and you're off to the races.
Using the settings the OP mentioned worked wonders when I was trying to convert my Hajime no Ippo episodes.
DropFolders looks interesting as well, I'm just not sure I'm crazy about using Adobe Air. Just another silly app to update all the freakin' time.
Anyway, good work, and thanks!

i'm trying drop folders right now... it's a nice idea but it consumes almost the same CPU than handbrake itself.... i think it is better to run only handbrake and let it use full CPU (and finish in around half of the time)

Any guides to create custom boot animations?

For the love of God I cannot find a for Dummies guide!
I want to convert a GIF file into an animation and I am not even sure what programs I need to begin with.
Thanks for any help.

I'll write something up tonight.
you need to extract the frames out of the gif file into multiple .png files.
I use something call Gif Frame Extractor. Search for it on google cause i cant post links. w w w [dot] evanolds [dot] c o m
After you extract the gif files its just a matter of resizing and tweaking your image set.
for the captivates your resolution should be 480 pixles wide by 800 pixles high.
name the series of images Image001.png Image002.png Image003.png etc.. I'm not sure what the max allowed images are but from my experimentation anything over 100 images tend to throw my phone into a bootloop. (be sure to have a good CWM backup handy when that happens)
I might upload a video tutorial/screencast later tonight as soon as i fix my phone (bootloop while trying to make the tutorial haha).
video guide is up on youtube
I made a quick guide on how to extract, edit and package your very own boot animation. The video came out crappy cause my screen capturing software didn't play well with Adobe Preimere. I'll try and make a better one over the weekend, but this should be sufficient for a quick reference.
Thanks mate!
With that and the steps fritzgerald I should be finally able to learn this
and music is bad while trying to pay attention to something important i find. hit mute in first 10 seconds the restarted video... couldnt think. 1
just a note for next time.
and i will be watching next time!
yeah i know its bad i made it at 3 in the morning didn't have time to review the video before work. Like i said the capture software totally konked out on me and premiere didnt want to sync the video correctly so im going to have to do the entire video over again later this week. BTW can anyone recommend a good screen capturing/casting software that plays well with Priemiere?

[BOOTANIMATION] 24 (TV Show) Boot & Shutdown Animations

The 24 and Jack Bauer are coming back this season. I got inspired to make boot and shutdown animations for our 4X resembling the show's intro and outro. The corresponding sounds are included.

How to install
1. Download and extract the 4xBootShut&Sounds.zip into a new folder on your computer
2. Connect the phone to the computer
3. Copy bootanimation.zip and shutdownanimation.zip to /system/media on your phone (back up the originals first if you want them back later)
4. Copy PowerOn.ogg and PowerOff.ogg to /system/media/audio/ui (also backup originals if you need them)
5. Disconnect and reboot your phone
ToDo
Currently, I'm experiencing problems with both sounds not playing and the shutdown anim is noticeably slower than it should be (an easy fix, but I won't be available for a few days). Still very usable, though.
Thank-yous
Many thanks to Dan Hildebrand

amazing idea :good::good::good:
good work :good:
Thanx, guys.
I have no spare time at present, but I hope to have some soon to correct mentioned nuisances.
After very thorough and detailed testing, I have no clue why the sounds don't play. They have proper bitrate, same permissions as the rest of the sounds, belong to root group. And nothing.
As for the slight lag in animations, all I can say is that lowering the FPS only produces stuttering and choppiness. It's obvious the H/W can't handle rapid animations.
Great

Hi
Could you publish stock bootanimation, original from LG?

[Q] Bootanimation - I would like to use a video

Hi XDA friends,
Recently I've started to mess around with my Moto G's bootanimation.
Tried a few (Blackhole is nice), and opening the zip files, I found a series of .jpg files that are the sequence of images that compose the animation.
Now I'd like to make a bootanimation using a short video of my son, so my question is: is there a program that automates this process, creating the zip or a program that extracts the video frames to .jpg files?
I searched the forum but didn't found this info (maybe I'm not a good searcher, sorry).
Thanks for any help.
