Demand for a file manager? - Xoom Themes and Apps

I've been working on and off on a file manager for honeycomb and I'm just wondering who out there would like such a program.
If I could get a feel for demand I might be more inclined to work on it and get it polished for the market. Right now it simply browses and opens files, but I have preliminary support for a drag and drop system and future plans for an sftp client built in (possibly only for a pay version).
Any thoughts/ideas?

Yes there is. I have been using Astro which is fine but I wish there was a better way to navigate between folders and sub folders besides just traversing back up the directory tree. I could see using fragments to show directory structure on the left and it could make file browsing a lot less painful on the Xoom.

Right now I use fragments to traverse folders, a horizontal stack of lists bulids up when you go deeper. Kind of like the Mac OS finder split view.

I would love to see an intuitive, non-bloated file manager for honeycomb.
I love the functionality of Estrong's, but he added in too much cruft for my tastes, and th UI is over complicated.

I would love to see something like root explorer (root access), but with folders on the side. Like others have said, using the .. to move back is a pain in the a$$.

I quite like root explorer for a light weight app. The only think I prefer about astro is the ability to 'open with...'

ES. FileManager works pretty well.

I use both ScaliCommander (drag and drop, two panel, option for file tree, etc etc) and File Expert (smb client for fetching stuff off my laptop without connecting the USB). Neither is very honeycombed. Something that combined their features would be of great use (don't need Scali's scaling as far as I can see).

definitely room for improvement. astro has some amazing functionality (even more than people realize) but just isn't optimized for larger screen sizes. file station for tablets works nicely, and has a very windows file manager vibe to it (positive and negative) but is a little simplistic... give it a go!

I would have interest in something specifically designed for honeycomb with the ability to multiselect and move files. This was never an issue on my evo since I didn't manage work documents on my phone (pdf, excel, word, ppt etc...) its a psin in the as* emailing 10 files then moving them from downloads to a meeting folder one at a time (astro) or multiple on a tiny screen (others I have tried) . If I'm a moron and there is already a file manager that does this someone please clue me in.

File Station Tablet
Don't know if you people already tried File Station Tablet. Is a file manager made for tablets.
It lacks some features but seems to be a good start.

no it does not... but like the guy said, its a decent start...
on a side note:
i wonder if a file manager could be made in compliance with the dropbox api such that it keeps dropbox folders synced like desktop dropbox. i use dropox on phone and tablet, but it doesn't actually keep them synced, more of a download/upload client.

Just a note, I'm cruising along on development...hopefully a beta out this weekend.

Looking forward to it as well. I was a bit frustrated with the file manager options on the market last night. Root Explorer is great, but a tablet optimized interface would be preferable.

i think it might be cool to use fragments by using the left pane to navigate through folder structures and the right to view the files... i would definitely want to use an app like this so dont worry there is demand!!! keep up the good work

I'm preparing to launch a file manager on the Market this week, if anyone is watching this topic, PM me if you'd like to help test
I won't be able to respond until late tonight.

Need a hack or app to quickly select and copy text on browser

Hello,
After much reading and thinking and debating between the HD2 and the Nexus One I finally placed an order for a Nexus One AT&T and can't wait for it to arrive.
I do however have a question about the browser. From what I know (correct me if I am wrong) to select text on the Nexus browser you need to first press the Menu button, then select More, then select Select Text, and then highlight the text to be copied. Too many steps in my opinion. I wish there was some way, a hack, a tweak, or maybe an app that will let you just do a long press on the screen that will automatically take you to "select text" mode?
Thanks.
I'm also interested in this. Coming from the iphone, it's a kind of a pain just to copy text since you have to go through all those steps and then use the trackball for an accurate selection. And when recieving an address in a text message you have to copy the entire message, paste it in maps, and then delete everything else that isn't part of the address. For example when I get a text like "Ok, my address is 123 N street 90000. Be here by 3." I have to delete everything before and after the address after copying/pasting the entire thing. It would be nice to just copy the address.
I will vote for a mechanism to do this as well. Please
me 3
10 charecters!
Just longpress on text and two markers will appear in the form of green dots with pointers. Move the first one to the beginning of the text you wish to copy, and the other to the end. All text in between will become highlighted green and three options will appear...copy, share, and magnify. No need for hack or app imo.
Edit: depending on which ROM ur running.
Moved as not Android Development.
a19 Desire rom.
the holding the text only works in the desire roms because its part of rosie. what we need is a dev that understands the framework to port it over to the stock 2.1
This is one of the only reasons I miss the Sense rom but I'm waiting my full 14 days so if anything happens to my phone. Even though the last one had no problems
Didn't Android implement copy and paste before the iPhone? Apple took a good idea and improved it surely Android can look at something that's better and adapt the concept without being sued. I would use copy and paste a lot more if it were at all practical. I don't want an iPhone but when a competitor does something well the only shame is in NOT learning from it.

Dolphin browser, you can long press on text, then go to the page option select text, you can either use your finger or trackball to select it, if you need to be precise, go into landscape mode. Not perfect, but it works.

Id really rather not root my phone. do you think there's any chance that method could be in an update if it turns out Android is in fact still in the mobile software business? I really need to copy and paste but I don't know how the current method was ever considered usable...thanks

Anyway, many many many people have posted here that HTC has serviced their phones even when unlocked and rooted, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Installed on my Xoom. Works well, would like to be able to see the list of people in the channel on the right hand side when in landscape mode instead of in its own window. Will live without that feature Will report any specific bugs that I can see, none so far.
My initial impression was it's beautiful. Will use for a while and report back. Great job

The view used to display the text (TextView) doesn't support c&p which is a huge shame. DCC support isn't implemented AndChat.

I've had a look at some example code and you're right, it isn't too bad. I will work to make it even more compatible with Honeycomb in the future.
Been using for a few days and has been working flawlessly. I would like to see an option to have users in the channel on the right side like PC programs. there is enough screen width to do this without sacrificing the chat.
Also it might be me but I could not find a way to auto login to a channel.

User list looks good. Can we adjust the font in a future release and also long pressing on a name would ideally bring up options such as ban kick op msg etc. Nice work so far!
I'm new to AndChat and it's quickly becoming my favorite IRC client. How does one auto-join multiple channels on that one-liner? Do we separate by commas or just space? I currently use the auto execute line and add /join for each channel.

Lock screen Idea

I think it would be pretty sweet to get a lock screen that "scanned your fingerprint".
I know there is probably no way for the Xoom to actually do that but seems like something cool.
I am thinking like a button you touched with a slider of light that starts slightly above and "scans" down then back up... maybe a second and a half delay....
Sounds like a pretty cool idea. And it might be possible. I'll see if I can come up with something to add to my current project.
Just a little test trial. Worked out pretty nicely to be honest. Might try to enhance it in the near future if there's a high demand for it. Here's a couple screen shots.

I'm glad you like it. I will put it in an .zip and PM you after I get off work. Also i'll have a full theme for tiamat rom within a few days or so depending on how busy I get. Still unsure if I will have this lock screen as default on it, as it still needs to be customized a bit.
For those of you that wanted the lock screen, i've added it to the stock framework for tiamat 1.1 rom only. All you have to do is use root explorer or something similiar and move the file in to /system/framework/ and overwrite the existing framework-res.apk.
If you have a special request for this in a different rom, or stock files just ask. I can easily add it. If you use it, and enjoy it, than don't forget to thank.

What about facial recognition using the front facing camera?
I love the whole idea.
To add to it, create an invisible hotspot, say the bottom left corner.
You have to hold here and then scan your finger print.
If you only scan it fails, if you hold the magic spot and scan, it passes.
Could you incorporate this with the security features of the Xoom, instead of the pattern lock!?!?!?

It should work with XoomZone. I'm not sure what other modifications he has done to the framework-res.apk, so if he has any extras it could possible wipe them out and put you back on a stock tiamat 1.1 framework.
If you run something other than tiamat rom just pm me with your info and ill put it in the correct framework.
works good with XoomZone. It does however remove alot of the Blue themeing.

NO! I do not suggest replacing the 3.2 framework with the old 3.1. Unfortunately Verizon is being retarded and hasn't released 3.2 for 3g models yet. As soon as this becomes readily available for me I will make some adjustments and create a thread with modifications for every version.

My wife's new HP computer uses the built-in webcam to do facial recognition to log her in. The software is called HP ProtectTools I think.. but instead of just using the fingerprint reader to allow login.. it took about 15 pictures of her face. Then when she has to log in, she clicks the facial option and the webcam turns on. It logged her in instantly. She can still use the fingerprint or manually type in a keyword in case the facial recognition doesn't work.
That would be a cool addition.

This will be great! Right now it doesn't work so good with ie9 wp7 mango. I can't scroll on first page. When I press on one link I only see back button and upper left corner of the movie frame (it's zoomed in I think and I can't scroll). If I press video it starts playing so that is working.
Thanks for sharing, hopefully you can fix it Best of luck!
I'm working on that, the WP7 browser (IE9) has a lot of incompatibilities with WebKit(as usual from Microsoft...)
Its not Microsofts fault.

Ok, WebKit browsers are dominating the mobile market, Android and iOS use them, and latest version of Firefox works with my code, Chrome does too, IE historically has a lot of problems and incompatibilities.
For me what I think is that you never tried to develop web apps for multiple browsers and felt into the nightmare of IE!
I imagine it is much the same as windows mobile...they set some standards and then change their mind and break it all.
Samsung Galaxy S (stock v2.3.3)and XDA TV Dark Edition
Installed it today and seems cannot close it anywhere. Back button doesn't do anything and neither Menu.
What? You can't close a webapp?
EDIT: Ahh, you're talking about the XDA TV app, but at the wrong thread. I'm trying to work around that problem, but it seems to insist. At the time you need to kill the app using a task manager if it's wasting your battery that much.

It works everywhere except for IE. Those aren't errors, but incompatibility issues with the Microsoft fragmentation in IE.

No. It does not. It isn't working in Opera Mobile on Android.
It doesn't work very well on a desktop firefox and on other desktop browsers.
It work ONLY in webkit browsers.
You can casll it what ever you want. IE (and other browsers) aren't doing anything wrong.
You are using stuff that works only in webkit. So it's not a incompatibility in IE or something.
It's a incompatibility in your webapp.
Use standard HTML, CSS and JS and it should work on IE!
This is having the same problems as the android application. It's not showing any of the more recent videos of the last couple of months.
Sorry, I've been working hard and also trying to completely redesign the XDA TV app so I can't update the feed, but I'll try to do it today.
Sorry
great S/W....iwill try
Just updated the app feed. My hands hurt after copying, pasting and wget'ing all those videos
Excellent.
Perhaps with a few mods we can generate a script directly from the Xda Podcast util.
I think I updated it a while back to generate a python script (to drive the youtube fetching script) from a Youtube user feed. The GUI isn't too obvious as I was quickly seeing if it would work or not, so might see if I can improve it.
Unfortunately I had problems getting python to run on my budget tablet I intended to use with it, so not done any more on it.

HA! XD ima click ur thanks button
I would recommend AV for only the remote lock, wipe, and gps features in case of theft/loss. There are other, non AV apps that do this too though. Such as Seekdroid.

+1 for Seekdroid
Haven't had to put it to use thankfully but if my phone ever does get stolen, I feel bad for the poor fellow who gets his hands on it... Very powerful app! Can remotely track the device, activate an alarm if you've lost it at home, lock the phone remotely and even do a full wipe, all from your web browser. Currently inside my house and it locates me to an accuracy of 4 meters... And the BEST part, IMO, you can HIDE it from the app drawer on the phone itself!
And as mentioned earlier, Antivirus is not needed. 99.9% of apps that come through the Market are safe.
Thank you all. I am aware that there are hardly any viruses out there for android devices, but i am currently in the midst of trying.. keyword: trying to root my phone, and i dont want to put any viruses from the files i download from the PC, onto my beloved smartphone, so once again thanks guys
and if any one has some free time and would be willing to guide me through the process of getting rid of bloatware (ive already rooted my phone, and backed up everything i just dont know what to do next) i would be willing to ship 10$ =)

Download Script Manager from the market, then run one of the debloating scripts in the dev section. There's one by psouza and another one, I used the other one. It has options to keep certain apps in the script.

Dphwhitty, ive done that in the past, downloaded script manager, ran both scripts, neither one of them worked saying i had a syntax error. But thanks anyways man

The 2011 version also has real-time driver distraction monitoring, ID 10-T error updating, and for some reason a toolbar.
I think AV is good enough. Added feature is that you get remote wipe if your phone ever gets lost.

FYI common sense doesn't protect you from things such as exploit and web script based infections.
I personally use Lookout. But honestly its not something you need to worry about too much, yet. But I'm sure its going to be a problem next year. Play it safe and only install apps that have high install counts on the market and high ratings.

Well, unless you are doing A LOT of side loading (installing non market apps) from random sites or are using pirated applications there is absolutely no need for anti-virus on a linux based system..
You as the end user are 100% in control of what apps gain permission and using common sense by looking at what permissions your giving said applications is up to you to decide.
The only virus I've heard of was found in china and pretty sure it was a side loaded application and it would steal data like phone numbers and e-mail addresses and the person was selling the information to spam sites.
Like I said though, if your just downloading apps from the android market your fine.

Your right, android already does that. Unless someone writes a script/exploit to get around asking permissions for root since the browser doesn't run as a root application. Android has very high security when it comes to web browsing. Remember, we are talking about linux.
In my opinion the best protection is a firewall, DroidWall does the job well.
