I found out that my NC when using Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 is not chargin while connected to my computer's USB
The icon says its chargin, but the battery level keeps decreasing every hour... It never happened this to me on CM7 or Standard Nook Rom.
I dont have the AC adapter with me... so Im now in a hurry to flash other rom and charge the Nook
I thought the original NC had to be powered-off completely to charge via the USB? Also it would charge much slower.
Ok... This is stupid... But I just rebooted... and now the Charge level has gone from 19% to 50%?!?!
The Nook isn't supposed to charge from a PC connection, because it needs more power than the PC can give. It's actually fitted with a 2 stage uUSB connector that has 5 pin (normal) contact on the first stage, but a custom 12 pin connection on the second stage. Your PC only provides the standard 5 pins...

crap. this explains why when i plugged my nc into the charger that came with my phone, nothing is happening, or it is charging super slowly.

Okay, so here is the story, I am without the OEM Nook charger (cable) and it seems that no other charger will charge it, I splurged on the Nook in the first place therefore not having the funds to buy another cable. So what I am asking, is, does anyone else know anyway to charge it?
I got a generic retractable microUSB cable. Charges fine from a computer (albeit more slowly than with the Nook charger). Interestingly, it charges super-fast when plugged into a powered USB hub.

You can charge from a computer? How? I have battery stats pulled up and I watch it as I plug it in, It mounts, but no charging

It is indeed charging when you have it connected to the computer although the amperage isn't great enough to trigger the Nook into a charging state. Keep it there for an hour or so and you'll notice a difference in the battery level.
I would turn off the auto mount of storage when charging from a computer. I charge my nook using USB every day at the office.

No it doesn't, that's a bug. At least if it's what I've seen.... My NC will sometimes to from say 70% to 100% nearly instantly when plugged into the computer. But it doesn't happen every time.. I haven't tried to figure out what makes it happen, but could be related to repeated plugs of the NC to the computer or something, as I was farking around with disabling/enablng automount when I last noticed it happen.
Later it'll start dropping like crazy and recover the "incorrect" charge status back to normal, like 5% drop in seconds several times in an hour is what I have seen it do in the past.
Okay, so if I leave it plugged into the computer, with auto mounting off, it will charge?

Mine does, I started the day @ 75% a few hours later it was fully charged.
I had same problem, bought nc used and got wrong cable
Used nook wall chager with wrong cable and got " not charging" but i left it overnight, next day it still showed same amount of battery it had night before so i thought it didny charge.
Went to buy nc charher $25!!! Ouch. Plugged it in and battery percentage went from 10% to 99% in 1 second
My theory is that a regular usb does charge it but the nook wont recognize it, but the battery is charged

Well, what you describe is not what I've seen.. What I have seen is that it will charge from ANY source, although it does NOT show it on the status bar or in the Settings, but if you watch the charge percentage (I use Battery Snap) you'll see it charging, assuming there isn't much of a load on the NC. As far as I know, it charges at 500mAh unless it has the NC Cable + Charger plugged in.
What I've also seen is that sometimes the charge jumps to 100% for seemingly no reason when plugged into my PC. Doesn't happen all of the time, but it's not charging fast, and it's not a "recognition" thing, it's completely false. If it jumps from 70% to 100%, it's still only 70% charged. It'll "discharge" really fast later, presumably as the system does whatever it does to determine battery charge (battery voltage etc).
I tried posting a day or two ago about this, but wasn't able to get any replies or any help at all actually : /
Anyways, for some reason ever since I rooted my nook, when i plug a charging cable into it, it either
(a) Pulls out of sleep mode and shows the Lock Screen, which drains the batt
or
(b) Will actually turn the device ON and do the above stuff, making it really hard to charge in general
Is there any way to fix this? Right now my nook keeps hovering below the charging line and reboot looping, then when it does have enough power to actually full boot, it drains itself faster than it can charge bc it runs the screen at full brightness.
HELP PLZ!?
Your charger must be bad or some other such problem, because that's what the Nook does: plug it into the charger and it boots itself up or comes out of sleep to the lock screen. It will blank the screen relatively soon after if it is running correctly.
On top of that, the charger supplies way more than enough juice to charge even under heavy use.
Are you using the nook charger and the nook cable?
Im using a MicroSD cable either through the computer or through an actual AC port in an adapter.
Im basically now at the point where I can't charge the thing enough to get it past the "Battery is Dead, wait 15 mins" mark. It sucks so hard :<
Im thinking I may have to take it back to Best Buy and try again, I have the warranty on it, just I really dont want to do that! >_>;
I am having the same problem......

(Emphasis added)
Are you using the official B&N USB cable and charger that came with it or just generic ones?
Using a standard MicroSD Blackberry adapter.
I tried going to bestBuys (i work for them) and getting a black NC cable, no one sells any!
My next stop is going to be BN themself. Is it really that big of a difference what cable you use?

Yes, it does make a difference. A standard USB cable and charger takes 8 hours or so to charge an NC. The B&N cable and charger that came with your NC can do it in 2. Use them.
yes, it seems to make a difference. I can only connect to the PC [mounting the drive] with the originally cable. With the generic cable, it will charge but doesn't seem to charge as fast [less than half the speed]. I would suggest you try to get your hand on a original and see if there is a difference for you also.
from the user manual:
CAUTION: Only use the Barnes & Noble power adapter and custom microUSB cable supplied with your NOOKcolor. Other power adapters might damage your NOOKcolor and its battery. Do not use a power adapter and cable intended for other models of NOOK eReader. Use only a NOOKcolor power adapter and cable.
NOTE: Using your NOOKcolor’s microUSB cable, you can connect your NOOKcolor to your personal computer to transfer files. Connecting over USB cable does not charge your NOOKcolor, however. To charge your NOOKcolor, you must plug it into a wall outlet
I tried to find similar threads but the closest I found were people having battery charging issues with Phiremod rom and they were advised to clear the battery stats in recovery mode, which I did try but still the NC won't charge.
I haven't actually let it drain to 0(it's currently at 23%) to see if it really isn't charging or if it's a software thing that is not showing the correct battery level.
Has anyone had a similar experience and been able to fix it? Or do you think it's not a matter of the installed rom and rather maybe the NC itself is "bad" and I need to return it?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. Especially since this is my wife's NC and I told her how "cool" this whole rooting, rom'ing thing was and that nothing bad should happen
Most likely it's the NC USB cable. It doesn't have a good design and fails often. I had problem with mine.
DOH!
Wow this is so embarrassing.
After your suggestion, I went to go check my wife's cable and noticed that she had the right cable with the "N" all nice and lit up...to bad she had it in her HTC Inspire plug!!^%$%^! And her Inspire in her NC plug adapter.
Hmmm...now to figure out how to delete this post...don't wanna give Nookie Froyo rom a bad name but insinuating it cause charging problems.
Actually I noticed this about nook. I plug in a general micro-usb cable, the battery % doesn't change at all.
The minute I switch back to the stock NC plug (with the led logo), the battery instantly shows it fully charged.
Does this mean I can only charge using the NC cable?

I believe the NC cable has extra pins that allow it to charge the NC faster. In addition, the NC charger is a 1.9 amp unit whereas most bricks are less.
A regular USB cable will charge your nook if you turn the nook off. It charges much slower though (overnight for a full charge).
It's not normal for a nook to charge 10% -> 60% in 6 hours, correct?
Has anybody experienced the same issue?
I installed Honeycomb right after getting nook -> then i did nookie color ->
First I noticed it on Ultimate Droid FW, so I than I flashed to CW7 latest nighty with OC'd kernel, and now i am back to nookie froyo. and the issue still exists.
I haven't found any tools that do battery/power tests..
I was just charging nook for an hour, without using it.
went from 19% to 26%.
I think its quite low.
Thanks
i find the wall charger charges insanely fast. the usb charging is the one that is snails pace for me.
maybe try wiping your battery stats in CWM?
when you say "from a wall charger"
Do you mean the one included with the NookColor? or a different one?
With froyo on emmc, and HC on microSD, I find re-charging via the included 1.9A charger pretty good. Charging from a 1a cell phone charger is slow. And charging via USB port on PC, doesn't happen.

Are you pairing that with the original Nook Micro usb cable? or are you using a different usb cable?
The cable that came with the nook as 2 extra pins that allow for the fast charging. standard usb cables wont have this.
If you are using the original cable and the original block. I would say that they are defective,
I have never heard of a Rom or Kernel effecting the charge rate like that but you might try going back to stock and see if its the same results.
*O and it should only take 3 hours from 0% -> 100% with the Nook cable and Block that came with the Nook Color."
Alright, thanks. I'll try the stock rom.
Can I exchange nook color in the store for this problem? or there's a procedure for that?
Cheers
Yeah I'd definitely say it should only take 2-3 hours to get a full charge from empty. 6 hours is way too long with the nook charger, that sounds more like the time it would take with a standard usb port charging it.

Are you using the B&N cable as well? You must use both or you'll only get .5A.

Depends on when you bought it. If it's still in the right time frame, you can just exchange it in-store. If not I'd recommend looking thru the website and/or calling about it instead of going in-store since they probably know more.
I think doing the wiping battery stats in CWM did the trick.. its charging quite fast now.
Thanks everybody for your help!
i had been running into this.. and could figure it out... i will try wiping bat stats too and see how it goes... thanks for the tip!
I rooted my Nook about 2 1/2 weeks ago running CM7 encore nightly 146; had no issues with the battery whatsoever. All of a sudden no matter what USB cable I use whether its the B&N cable/charger or not, the battery is taking forever to charge. Like this morning at 800am, I used the B&N cable/charger for the Nook and the battery reading as of 12:04am (Thursday) is still only at 61%. I mean come 17 hours to charge a battery and it's still not a 100%!!!
I wiped the battery stats in recovery mode and rebooted it hoping that it would incease the charge but no such luck. FYI, everytime I charged my nook the screen would always stay on and I use it pretty frequently to watch movies, read books, and use the web browser.
As of now, I powered down my nook to see if it would charge without being in sleep mode to see if that was the prob.
I really would appreciate if anyone could help me with my problem! It's very frustrating!
It will charge much faster if you attach the charging cable and then power off the Nook (however mine sometimes will turn back on during this process).
That's a pretty old nightly!
It will only fast charge with the B&N Cable AND B&N Charger. Any other combo will not fast charge, and will charge only at 500mAh vs 1900mAh.
Unless your NC is very loaded, it will charge quite fast on the fast charger, so I suspect you're not charging it with the cable + charger or there is something wrong with one of the two.
