Hi guys. Hopefully this is the correct board to post in. I'm a former fan of CyanogenMod. I used the old CyanogenMod builds that ran Android 2.1, but when 2.2 came out, I jumped to a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
After trying CyanogenMod 6, I'm pretty disappointed. It felt much slower than stock, and it no longer had the CyanogenMod feel.
Anyhow, are there any developers that actually make clean and stable ROMs? With every N1 ROM I've looked at, the developers seem obsessed with changing the Android GUI around, and not adding more important features.
There really seems to be no ROM that keeps the default Android GUI look and feel, but adds things like a percentage in the battery icon, a white-on-black Messaging app tweak, and some of the under-the-hood performance tweaks.
Maybe I'm just angry, and maybe no one shares the same sentiments as me, but I'm just curious to hear back from others. Am I going to have to bake my own ROM to get what I want?
Thanks in advance anyone who took the time to read my rant.
Edit: I wanted to note, after seeing a friend's Motorola Droid with the BuglessBeast 2.2 ROM on it, that looks like almost exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, that seems to be a Droid-specific ROM.
Push Mms.apk from latest CM6.0.0-RC1 to whatever ROM you wish, and you got the black background in MMS.
There are some close-to-stock ROMs, like Geo411m's.
Personally, I use LeoFroyo with black bar until CM supports SD-EXT in framework, that would be a good enough reason to switch. I'm already tempted to switch to have browser enhancements, but I don't feel it's a good enough reason by itself. For some reason, Browser.apk crashes when pushed, probably has some CM-only framework dependencies.
I'm a fan of Kang o Rama
I'm really liking Geo411m's ROM, aside from the trackball-unlock (no way to disable it as far as I can find?).
Maybe I should just learn to bake my own ROMs-- I don't really want much past the stock ROM, just a couple things, really.
There wouldn't happen to be any informative threads on how to do so? I looked around but couldn't find much.

There is no one ROM that is perfect for everyone. Maybe you guys are new to Android and this is your first device. Maybe you've just been spoiled with the variety of developer support... but most of us former G1 owners who rooted were very adept at picking bits from various ROMs and pushing those bits into a developed ROM that was already largely what we were looking for. I remember downloading and pulling out frameworks, changing icons, pulling/pushing apps, etc. That way, you end up with EXACTLY what you want. Perfect example... I was reading comments on Engadget to Cyanogen's latest Froyo build for the G1, and some ass complained about the "ugly" rounded notification bar. All he has to do is push over one or two files from any of a gazillion other ROMs and he'd have his original notification bar back.
Think of custom ROMs as a starting point... and then find and push the parts of other ROMs that you really like over a good custom ROM. You'll learn a lot and end up self-sufficient. You'll probably also feel very proud of doing some of the work personally.
ummm, what exactly is wrong with MoDaCo ROMs? modaco's philosophy is being as close as possible to a stock ROM, with just a few improved tweaks. modaco ROMs are like stock ROMs. you tried this?

Try Modaco's roms, their basically stock, just rooted. His was the first one I tried, but I switched to evil because I like black status bar and theme. Modaco's roms are not themed, and the same way stock is set up his is set up, nothing extra. If I did'nt like my roms themed, I would definitely rock one of his for sure.
Using geomod411's rom myself. Added a2ext support and it's all good. It's practically stock so I'll be looking to add things like black mms later.

I tried this but it didn't work. I had to push it from Recovery because when the phone was on I kept getting an error about it being read-only.
adb push Mms.apk /system/app/Mms.apk
Worked in recovery... but my text messaging interface has not changed. It's still the stock/white.
EDIT: Did it a ghetto way. Used Root Explorer, removed /system/app/Mms.apk -- then installed the Mms.apk that I pulled out of the CM6 zip. That worked.
Are you seriously complaining about Cyanogens CM6 RC1?... You do know what RC1 means right?
Anyway, CM6 is the best release of 2.2 for N1 out there.. it's just in a working stage now and there are allot of things to fix... that's why it is a Release Candidate... and it was in Alpha testing not long ago.
If you want a clean and simple go back to stock...

I use modaco with desire theme. You can add any theme you want with metamorph.
*deep breath* I apologize in advance to the mods if this starts off yet another ROM flamestorm, but here goes.
I was running the original leaked froyo build, but it was having issues with slowness and just not being responsive, so I decided to look into something more up to date for my phone.
Did a bunch of quick reading and decided that Perception seemed to be rich on features, and being on beta 9 a good history of active dev support, so I loaded it up.
...
what I got reminded me of something a PC warez group would put out for a keygen app. I don't want to see an advertisement for the dev on the lock screen, etc. Don't want to put down the efforts the dev(s) put into the release, but it's got waaaaay too much bling for my taste.
Can anyone give recommendations for a ROM that's solid, and actively maintained to add in new features to benefit it - that doesn't have a bunch of l33t bling?
Once again apologies if this caused headaches for the mods, but asking general consensus that does keep current on dev for this device and explaining what I don't want seems to be an efficient way to do this.
Thanks
Other than that advertisement on the lockscreen did anything else bother you?
you CAN flash different lockscreens
All custom roms have their own personality. I think based on your comments you may like assonance. Be aware though that the top bar had a ginger bread look.
Axura is nice but the boot screen does say axura

Assonance. No advertising anywhere that I've seen, and it's a very good ROM.
Sent from my Android using the power of my dreams.
to be honest, the entire procedure of loading up that rom annoyed me from the beginning. Between some female robot voice saying things I couldn't quite understand while it was doing...something. To the huge logo screen that came up during the load/boot process, to the additional of a dozen or so urban-sounding ringtones that weren't part of the original leaked froyo I was running (yes I know I can go in and delete any offending ringtones) to the fact that it seems any stock wallpapers that weren't garish were removed (solid colours, please?) To the animated advertising on the lock screen, which pushed me over the edge.
I admit I was guilty of not researching in depth, I might have known in advance what I was getting in to. My phone was getting so chunky in just navigating screens and attempting to make phone calls, I needed something. And while I was going thru the hassle, I decided I'd try to get something solid loaded on it.
My phone is my workhorse, I just want something solid, functional and dependable. I have no desire to show it off. I have a Viewsonic G-Tablet that is my playtoy that's I customize and put all the bling on.
But my phone, I want it lean, mean and a bit more functional than the stock Android.
All i900 roms have those ring tones.
Wall papers are all over the internet
As mentioned assonance had no advertisement, or branding
The voices on boot are part of voodoo. The lag fix. really it is a comfort thing. as long as she says something every so often you know things are progressing. Without it you will be wondering why your phone is taking 6 minute to boot

Give the Devs a break. They put a lot of time into making this ROMs and they don't get paid, they do it cuz they like it. You don't have to rant about it, just uninstall it and get something else. And like mcord11758 said, you can customize the lockscreen and ringtones and you can get any wallpaper you want from the internet. An the voice thing only happens the first time you boot up when its applying the lagfix.
I have only tried Cognition (beta 6). There is a boot screen that says cognition, but that's it. You can change boot screens if you want. I feel its a great mix of vanilla and touchwiz. Its super fast, and been amazingly stable. Those voices only happen once, like others said it let's you know you're not bricked, still working.

The whole point to flashing a custom rom...is to have a good working solid base to work with if you choose to leave it as it is... Since these are Android phones that can easily be modified to your liking (after all isn't that what you are trying to do ? )...and since you are loading a custom rom that has tons of people giving their input on how it looks and what features it has in it...it's really time for you take responsibility of what you are posting and to stop expecting a plain vanilla rom when you can easily see how far along it is in development that one is.
Learn to read and research better before you flash a full featured rom with tons of customization in it. They all have change logs on the OP for you to see what is in it...and if you don't understand what your flashing...then perhaps you should refrain from doing anything like that until you are familiar enough with it. You can post questions about all the roms if you don't understand it's features...you can also read the thread and what folks are saying about it...even if it is as long as it is...This way...you become familiar with it..and how it was developed over time.
Complaining about a very popular rom's features or it's designer because you didn't take the time to research what exactly it has in it or does is childish at best.
If you find my post offensive...or flaming you...I am sorry...but no one twisted your arm to modify your phone..just as no one can force you to read and research before you attempt to modify your phone...but you will be better off doing just that and to learn what it is your attempting...and wanting on your phone...before you flash anything. All of the roms have different features..modems..lag fixes..some are over clocked..some aren't...some have talking voices at boot up..some don't...all this information is available to you....BEFORE you do anything...
Mac
Protip: The majority of the custom rom's are not built for use, but for the dev themselves. If they like it that way, and you don't, too bad.
That being said, CyanogenMod is probably the only one that fully fits your requirements, as it's built from AOSP sources, rather than a modified samsung rom.

I have an HTC Hero and one of my many questions is do you think Sprint and HTC will make a Hero 2 ... maybe with a 3.5" or lil bigger (not a monster sized phone) with either a good 1ghz processor or even a dual core and maybe keep the "track Ball" but lose all the other buttons make them all capacitive touch ..... thoughts or opinions ?
I do believe that the Hero has been very successful for both HTC and Sprint.
Ok back to me and My Hero I am not a developer and I am new to the rom switching game. I love the crisp look of the factory Sense UI, but I am one of those types that sees things differently. I look at things and say to myself how could we improve on this or how can we make it faster and keep it looking good. I found this website, and pretty much changed my Hero into a Super Hero so to say.
I also would like to say thanks to all of the great developers on the CDMA Hero side, so far I have tried almost every variety of rom and different mod on my Hero (have screenshots once I get out of the probation period I will post them)
So far I figured out the easiest way for me to root my hero is with one of two I found floating around these forums, Hero Root by regaw leinad or super1click v1.7 ..... I also figured out that firerat's mod is easier the data2ext if your nat really familiar with adb. I also have found three more programs to help a lot, droid explorer, android commander and qtadb.
My question to all Hero owners what do you think is the best all around ROM, Gapps, and other mods as of May 8th 2011? (I am just looking for opinions I read almost every thread on this site and I would just like to see it all together call me lazy)
All this and I have not "bricked" my Hero .... must be one tough s.o.b.
To answer your first question, I just don't see a revised Hero in the works. It has a been a great phone for many users and Sprint alike I'm sure, but the Hero is not likely to reappear simply because it doesn't really conform to what HTC is doing with most of their phones now (4-4.3 inches, capacitive buttons, similar super thin form factor). I definitely don't think they would put a trackball in, because even if there were a trackpad on a new device it's almost guaranteed to be optical. If there were to be a refresh, I definitely think we would have heard something by now considering the lifespan of the Hero.
As for roms, I'd definitely suggest playing around with AOSP or CM7 versions of Gingerbread. You may find that you prefer greater customizations than you get with Sense. However, if you really really dig Sense and would much rather have it, there's a great group of guys developing Sense 2.1 for Gingerbread on the Hero. It's in Alpha right now, but even considering that, it's a fantastic piece of work. As far as Gapps go, I would just stick to the latest ones provided at the Cyanogenmod wiki. I don't really apply other mods as I personally don't think I need any, but YMMV.
i for one love the design its the perfect size for me and as far as the processor goes once i overclocked it a little bit its plenty fast enough for me because i dont really install a ton of apps and as far as gaming goes i have a ps3 for that lol so it really is the perfect phone for me all the new ones are just to big i think.
and ive had the hero sense september and i had a mt3g before that.
OMGB
I have been running OMGB for the past 8 hrs I am using wifi only browsed the web for a while, cut grass listened to some MP3's and browsed the web some more and more MP3's I listened to MP3's for a couple hours (with the MIUI player found in the forums) and it shows pretty good battery life
I would also like to add that I am using the
opengles tweak to show supported version 1.1 (not 100% sure why I did it ... maybe just to say I did it successfully)
s0be's kernel AP5, unCoRrUpTeD data2ext V2.2, and the MIUI music player and camera apks
I like the bare minimalist look and feel this rom has, but I still dont have a true favorite .... variety is such a sweet thing and all these choices .... and most of the people I know dont even know what an HTC Hero is .... if its not a iLemon or if it doesnt say DROID (like in the commercials) they just dont "get it"
ok found the first flaw ..... lol

Well after being out of town for a week and not having my laptop I am finally home. Work has already began but, I am torn as to which way I will go. Right now I have a mix of Thriller 1.0.3 and ThaizD and I am thinking about ditching that and modding CM7 which will be a lot of work to get things working correctly. I am running my rom right now and posting from the XDA tapatalk app. There is still a lot of tweaking that needs to be done. I haven't even touched the theme yet, just a few tweaks.
I will hopefully be releasing a beta within the next week or so as long as I have enough time, been very busy lately. Just thought I would get the word out. So far everything is working well, which isn't saying much since I haven't really done any experimenting yet.
As of now I am calling it "No Frill Thrill" because it is going to be a very stripped down rom. I am trying to focus more on speed, battery, memory, GPS and theme. Users will be able to just restore data and get everything they had back.
Guess that's all the info I have for now. I will post updates now and then to let you guys know how progress is going.
I look forward to seeing what u can come up with. I'm sure everyone else will appreciate any advancements we can get. Really looking forward to the possibility of new kernels and more radios that can be flashed down the road. New theming alone would definitely make the UI better. This has got to be one of the ugliest and worst designed UI to come on a phone.

I think we all agree that we appreciate any work that is done to make this phone/any phone better. I have a high appreciation for all of the developers.

I might need some testers for pre release but that wont be for a while. Progress is coming along nicely though I will post some screenshots and a little bit more info once I get further. Right now I'm not happy with it enough to release any shots because things will be changing. Still not sure which kernel i am going to use nor am I sure of the theme right now looks kind of shoddy.
And just so you know, I have a lot going on so progress on my rom is slow things will be a little less hectic in the next week so things will really pick up then.

Well things are picking up now. I have added some extra tweaks to not just the build.prop but a few other places as well. Not getting too involved in this because GB is coming soon so this is just for fun and to improve our phone while we wait. Trekfan will hopefully be designing a nice theme/ui so thank him as well he hasnt actually agreed but I think from his offer in his last post its safe to say he will.

Well here's some screens of certain parts, pay no attention to the status bar I haven't really messed with that yet, like I said things are going slow but will pick up soon.
The first shot is of the dialer which I'm going to make all the buttons like #5 and smooth out the graphics and make them look much better.
Second shot is of the pop-up windows green glow border and orange load circle. This will also be changing in the future.
Third shot is just something stupid, changed the lock pattern circles to little android guys.
I have also edited the messaging app and will be doing much more once I get a few days of free time.
Name changed to Doomed Froyo
I cant wait to try it. Sounds like a good ROM. Got to give props to the developers for taking time developing apps for the Thrill.
Looks great, but the five button does look sort of ugly IMO, otherwise amazing job.

Oh and if Trekfan is making a theme then things are going to probably look completely different still haven't heard anything yet. WooHoo thanks to Trekfan for putting together a very nice framework, it isn't quite done yet but what is there is looking very fancy!
Things that have been done:
Speed Tweaks
Memory Management Tweaks
Camera/Video Tweaks (Still working on some settings)
GPS Tweaks
DNS Tweaks
Ads Blocked with Host file
+ More
Things to do:
Add Wallpapers/Ringtones/Notification tones/Fonts +extras
Add extra apps (cpu master/XDA forum app + others)
Update Apps to newest versions
Finish framework theme (THANKS A TON TO TREKFAN)
Remove any bloat (always last thing for me to do....)
Finish altering contacts.apk, mms.apk and lghome.apk (coming along slowly I have been neglecting other things working on this stuff lol this may wait until the full release after beta)
There are many more things that will be done, screenshots of the INCOMPLETE theme will be coming today and hopefully we can have an official beta release this weekend. I hope everyone enjoys this ROM as it is meant to not only enhance our devices but also give everyone a bit of variety as the development on this phone is pretty stale. One thing that I hope to do is release flashable "themes" or frameworks so once you download the ROM you can then just download and flash .zips in CWM and have a variety of looks.
Another big THANK YOU goes out to gtg and all his work on the Thriller ROM and all the other guys over on the O3D forum keep up the good work everyone.
1. Screenshot of the plain desktop, things will be changing like the default wallpaper and the look of the launcher will be changed on post beta release.
2. Shot of the pulldown notification area.
3. Shot of the new check boxes, buttons have been changed as well.
4. Shot of the toasts, pop-ups, you can see the loading wheel in the top right and a bit more.
Things here and there may change, also the battery indicator goes from blue (full) to green to orange to yellow to red (low) there has been a lot more changed besides what you see so everyone thank Trekfan for all his hard work putting this together. THANKS TREK
Also, once this is released it will be in the Development section as of right now this is just general stuff that's why I posted it here, if the mods wish to move this thread to Development so be it and I will just update first.

lol I know I am asking a lot but hoping y'all can help
I had the OPO (One Plus One) and the Op2 is not to my liking because my OPO filled up and ran out of storage. I have over 500 apps (don't ask lol) and use a lot of them.
That being said my OPO finally died. After almost 2 years I accidentally lost it in a buggy and the gears got the case and phone quite well unusable. I used to LOVE Samsung because of the external SD and easy ROM flashing with included root (superuser) in the rom. The S6 is nice but here we go again no external SD. The Note 5 is nice, but again no External SD.,
Sooooo.... Onto the Note 4. Quad core because t-mobile does not have the octa-core version for sale. Which is cool in many benchmarks I see ran for it the Snapdragon outperforms the Exyos. Also 4gb memory vs 3gb is not that much to write home about I won't miss too much. PLUS the Note 5 has no IR emitter for remote use so yea. I liked that feature. NOTE 4 IT IS.
The more I read up on it though the more I find issues and I want to be sure I can resolve them NOW vs later. Did many searches here so please do not tell me to search. Been there done that. I am overwhelmed and actually pretty happy that there is so much good development for the phone. But I find myself hours and hours of reading and still on the sideline wondering what I want.
Thus I figured I would ask you all, who have been there done that and find out what the differences are in what I want and what would fit me best. NOTE THIS IS A NOT WHATS BETTER THAN OTHER THREAD - JUST WANT SOME FACTS AND IDEAS WHAT WOULD SUIT ME BEST IN CHOOSING A CUSTOM ROM WITH ROOT ACCESS BUILT IN HOPEFULLY AND A KERNEL TO GO WITH THAT ROM.
I will be adding a zerolemon extended battery. I know after reading I need a Rom and/or kernel that supports this to show the right battery percentage. This has to be factored in.
Here's some other stuff I would like (not need, just a wish list) that may help you find me a nice rom and kernel combo. REMEMBER I AM JUST ASKING WHAT YOU THINK WOULD WORK FOR WHAT I NEED/WANT AND WHY. Thanks in advance for the help.
I would LIKE a nice black background texting and phone and contact look. In my Galaxy S4 I had a few years back one rom I installed was black with neon phone pad keys and a neon look to the contacts and even the texting was black with yellow and blue and red and green text bubbles - was so cool. I HATE white backgrounds or light color backgrounds, but alas if there is nothing avail it is what it is. I do use swiftkey and it has some cool dark keyboards but I mean the actual texting app and phone screen backgrounds.
As stated need a rom/kernel that has extended battery support
Do NOT need all the fancy CPU tweaks. Its cool to overclock and such but not needed. Either way - with or without overclocking is cool. I have rom toolbox pro so I can do most anything in there anyways.
Would LOVE extended volume controls and extended power menu so I have screenshot and boot into recovery and such on the power menu - but hey isn't that what xposed framework is for and I just install an app there that does it. lol Been there done that I LOVE xposed - but if a rom has this built in why not get it and save me a step
Speaking of xposed do any roms have xposed pre-installed? I know, asking for a lot here but if some do please top of the list. Otherwise will install xposed myself That's why I am doing a custom recovery. DO YOU suggest CWM or TWRP or?
NEED TO KNOW HOW ROM WORKS. Some I see are based on 5.1 lollipop some on older 4.4. I am all for upgrading to 5.1 (woohoo) my OPO was on 5.1 and loved it. I am thinking its easy to keep phone NO updates brand new out of box keep the 4.4 stock and put my own recovery and I can use a custom rom to jump to 5.1 so that way there is NO Samsung or t-mobile updates to lock anything. I remember in my Galaxy s4 my 1st one I made the MISTAKE of upgrading the stock o/s then my custom recovery showed the yellow 1 in the corner after I added my custom rom. After that did the rom 1st NO system updates - I figure its best to do the same here with Note 4 right? or??? PLUS I read the note 4 gets kinda buggy on 5.1 so hoping some awesome developers have fixed this and maybe some newer roms or older roms now updated have fixed this and the note 4 does 5.1 as smooth as 4.4 lol
Any other info? I am not locked on the Zerolemon - any ideas there too would help - but amazon has it for $55 now thats cheap for zerolemon and it has a case like otterbox with the belt clip so yayyyy Ultimately I would LOVE a waterproof case with extended battery but been searching a while for that no luck lol.
Thanks again people. I just got tired of searching all the roms and the reading hundreds of posts - some thousands of posts for extended battery support, then there's 100 ideas on best kernel to match and I find myself 20 pages from the last thread trying to see the most recent posts from past month or 2 seeing what is best now vs what was best when the rom 1st came out and comparing which is really best and its just too UGH! I am a technical guy and will be here for weeks checking everything out. I am finally just asking for your advice and what you think is best for what I want and narrow down my search a lil to keep me from being here so long doing it on my own.
MAINLY I AM JUST ASKING AFTER TRYING SEVERAL ROM AND KERNEL COMBINATIONS WHICH DO YOU FEEL ARE BEST SUITED FOR MY NEEDS AND WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND AND WHY - I DON'T WANT THIS IS BETTER THAN THIS JUST RECOMMENDATIONS ON GOOD ROMS WITH A KERNEL FOR THAT ROM OR MAYBE STAY STOCK KERNEL IDK.... U TELL ME WHAT YOU ALL FOUND THAT WORKS GOOD. THAT FIT THE ABOVE CRITERIA AND I WILL LOOK AT ALL AND CHOOSE WHAT I WANT.
Anyone lol. Again I am open to any rom which can do above what I need done. I just rather you aLl post what works for you to make it easier to narrow down my searches lol
