Optimus 2X reviews

So I guess most of us interested in this phone have read the big reviews already. They vary a lot - just now I was reading the Tech Radar review, which has got me doubting:

Very negative about the screen and camera. :-/

Check the anandtech review. In my opinion its one the best reviews for the 2x.

The reviews varies so much with this phone!
Strange that they are complaining about the screen that others have called a strong point of the phone.
Maybe there are huge production variations.
Not sure I trust that review.
Also Engadget gave what I think was an unfair treatment in their conclution.
Anyway, I have ordered it and I'm sticking with my decition so I guess I'll know who was right in a few days/weeks.

I think its pre-production, but i'm afraid bad speaker quality might be related to low quality HW?
Some of the UI bugs should be corrected as far as I know

These are relative conclusions as it does not tell us what their standard is on sound quality. gsmarena.com compares it at least with some other phones + they complain on the crosstalk when listening with headphones.
If they compare the speakers with e.g. a Nokia xpress music phone like the 5800, of course it is bad, but if you check the speakers of the several HTC desires (mine being a normal desire), they all suck bigtime. The LG will not perform any worse.
It also seems difficult for manufacturers to get decent sound out of the modern flat phones anyway.
Crosstalk is something which probably can be fixed inside the software, EQing and therefore loudness as well.
I am curious though, phone probably arrives next week and I will report asap.

Audio quality through headphones?

As my Galaxy S got stolen a few days ago, I'm looking for a new phone and 2X seems like the best option right now. Only thing that concerns me is that some reviews mention not so good audio quality through headphones.
I tend to use my phone as an mp3 player quite a lot and I use good headphones with them, so here's a question for you, kind 2X owners - how does it cope as an mp3 player? I'm no audiophile but I aint deaf either, I was satisfied with Galaxy S' audio quality and would prefer not to go lower. Thanks in advance for any info.

I am not sure about sgs, but it definitely lose comparing my old sony erisson w810
when the wires bumping to your chest, you will listen the noise in ur earphone too. I would give my old w810 9/10, and this phone 4/10.

I would say it definitely depends on the earplugs..
Have to say that with my Sennheiser in-ears i cannot complain.. Haven't done a side by side comparison with a different phone yet.. so If i will, I'll let you know!
Sorry for your loss of sgs. You will not regret the O2X i would say!

Mine is spot on as a music player. The 2x and the Desire I had are more or less the same in the headphones I have. I am not sure how they compare when you enter in the supplied headphones into the test.

Tested with high-end earphones (Westone UM2). It sounds ok but I wouldn't use my 2x as my main music player.

Sound level is a little on the weak side and slightly tame bass levels on my Sennheiser HD 565 headphones. On the plus side, very clean sounding audio. I think a set of headphones/earphones with high sensitivity rating should produce decent audio, or something with high bass reproduction for bassheads.

Might be worth looking at PowerAMP too. It improved audio quality on my Hero no end.

Sound quality is very good except for crosstalk which is awful. That makes the sound quality very average:

Just read from LG Optimus 2x service manual that it uses the same Wolfson audio chipset (wm8994) as Samsung Galaxy S. So, in theory, both phones should be similar sounding when using the same earphones. Or, at least, LG 2x audio should not be much degraded from your old Galaxy S - if at all.

Rooted galaxy s has the vodoo sound option which really enhances audio quality

Hi,
I as well use the phone as my main mp3 player. Before I had a iPod Touch, a HTC Desire and now the LGOS. And what shall I say: The LGOS is the best beneath them.
Maybe it's also important to say that I never even unpack those earphones coming with the devices. I never had a decent earphone coming with these devices.
I used Sure earphones (the middleclass ones - which are quite expensive already, I bought them for about 150€) but now switched to Phonak by Audeo (a Swiss company) which really deliver amazing sound.

Thanks for the input guys, I just placed an order : ) Voodoo sound on Galaxy S was great indeed, hope someone creates an equivalent for 2X in the future.

I tried swapping them with the ones HTC supplied with my old Hero and the difference was huge (and even these ones aren't all that good either)!
Shame LG's media player doesn't listen for next/prev button presses (if the headset has that), coz I actually don't mind LG's player software.

God, I hate those that were supplied by HTC. They were bloody horrible. Much prefer the LG ones (I left my half decent ones at my sisters house...).
Just as a side note: PowerAMP runs beatifully on this phone.

I have use both the one that came with the device and one which came with my htc wildfire and on both i can press the button 2x to go to the next song, so it should work. Or does your headset have 2 separate buttons?

2x uses the same headphone socket layout as iphone which differs from the galaxy S

I personnaly found that audio isn't a great part on Optimus 2x. I tried the earbuds, they are not bad but not really great ... And they doesn't fit my ear, I mean they doesn't isolate sound correctly or usually I never change the size of the foams ;-)
Meanwhile, I noticed that level sound isn't very high. Same for you ? (Maybe that was my divx file, need to verify that)

Audio Quality

Is the LG O4X audio quality & volume through headphones really that bad? I've read GSMarena's review as they've now posted the audio part of the review. They said it possibly one of the worst devices they've tested
This will be a deal breaker for me. :-( what do you guys think?
Any previous GSII ownes in here that can provide input on personal opinions between the quality of the two?

Audio quality seems fine to me. GSMArena suspected they had a faulty unit, and said they would try another but I have yet to see an update to the review to reflect this.

I did see that but thought what is the chance of them receiving a faulty unit. Im currently using a Galaxy S II, and the audio quality via music player suits me. I reappy want the 4X as its a sexy beast, just wouldn't be able to cope with crap music quality.

The sound quality is pretty good on the 4x. I upgraded after breaking my milestone and I was also iffy on buying the 4x because of the gsm review... when I tested it out, it sorta felt like my entire phone became a speaker but it instantly became muffled when I covered the grill. Black magic is at work here lol

Oudio output is fine for me too, though not as good as the One X, a little louder would not be a bad thing, but overall as good as other smartphones in the segment.

It is, once again, fine. Satisfactory. I don't like in-ear headsets so I just use the ones that came with my milestone 2 years ago >_> I did try the headphones that were in the box though, they unlock some eq presets along with an option to manually tweak the levels. But plugging in any headphones will unlock that.

...as good as the other six smartphones I use, honestly. I always check music quality through my $500 akg closed headphones with quite a range of high quality files and the 4x sounds really fine, absolutely no problem here.

Just bought 4X to replace my 3.5" iPhone 4S, everything is fine except the sound quality which I must say is terrible compared with iPhone especially when using the built in speaker Maybe it's because the speaker is at the back of the phone

What if you set the O4X on its front so that the speaker grill is facing upwards? Will it be not as terrible? Is it really that bad compared to iPhone 4S?

Only the sound is louder, quality won't improve no matter where you face the speaker. Apart from Moto's Raxx, iphone's sound quality is excelent (from my own experiece).
I downloaded Poweramp as recmmended by local forum here to my 4X and the sound quality improves a little bit.

ok the sound of the built-in speaker is poor, but with headphones, for me, the sound is great. I don't think it's very exciting listen music with the speacker ......

Use the right headphones (i got a HTC set) and download the POWERAMP app...

hi guys, what about the call quality? is it loud n clear on speakers?

It's okay. I went through a few phone calls and I didn't experience any problems and have no complaints.
Although... has anyone else noticed that the voice for navigation is kinda quiet? I turned it up to max and drove a few suburbs over but I felt like it was a bit too gentle for a car environment.

Music over bluetooth, Motorola Motorokr s305 stereo headphone & headset works good. But dolby mobile setting stutters (to bad, cause I liked the sound). I now use the headphone amplifier setting. Also good, but not as loud as Dolby mobile.

Did anybody try the headphone out with high-end multidriver iems (Like Shure SE535, Phonak PF232 or Westone UM3x...)?
I'm an iPhone 4S user and the headphone out is almost perfect when listen thru my UM3x. Hence i was wondering if the 4X would be close in terms of noise floor, resolution and frequency response.

Im using Trple-fi 10, the sounds is good and even better than iPod touch which I used before.
btw, the app Im using is Poweramp and the music format is ALAC.

If the TF10 sounds good and you have your treble then output impedance of the LG must be quite low which is a great thing.
Could you fill me in about the noise floor (Noise that you can hear when you pause the music till the amp section shuts off).

Different SoC's have different DAC's (Digital-to-Analog-Converters [Audio Chips]). Exynos, for example, has the awesome Wolfson DAC, which you can use the Voodoo Audio mod with. The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 has a different, but still very good one. So yeah, it makes sense that this Intel one [probably] has a different DAC considering you're talking about an entire system on a chip. The camera, however is independent and has nothing to do with the SoC. So if Motorola decided to use a lesser quality camera on the i than the M, that was an independent decision.

Personal experience is that the i has a better camera than the M, but that both are mediocre. Kind of hilarious that the i had a dedicated camera button for a shoddy camera.

I'm talking about the current-gen model. I've had the Epic 4G Touch when I was on Sprint (it had the Exynos 4210) and yes it was really bad (flat-sounding). I was trying to illustrate a point though.

Can anyone that owns the Razr i please comment on the audio quality? I'm planning on buying this phone, but I listen to music on my phone for hours every day and am buying a new phone, because the audio connector on my Desire is bust. I'm only interested in the sound quality through headphones.

i've just compared it to the gnex. not great i'm afraid. quite a bit of 'hiss'. a few seconds after play comes to a stop, you'll hear a nasty 'clicking off' sound. not quite sure what it is but it is not there on the gnex. i really wanted to love this phone but audio quality is a let down. for that reason alone, i'll be sticking with my gnex and returning the i tomorrow

You've got to be kidding me, how hard can it be to get this right.

I disagree. I am not an audiophile but I find the sound pretty much as good as any other device I have had. There is hiss when not listening to anything but it seems to go away when I am listening to something.
Anyway, I really think its ok.

that is true, you'll only notice it on quiet areas of songs. but those same areas have no hiss at all on the gnex. i'm not trying to big up the gnex here but quality of audio output via headphones is pretty important to me and the hiss i find is unacceptable

Honestly I haven't noticed a hiss when listening to things. I mainly listen to podcasts which have lots of quiet sections and little music. I will turn my ears to the potential hiss next time my headphones are plugged in.

Just got my new XT890. Excellent phone. Have played some MP3s and haven't noticed any problem till now. This phone has much better sound quality than my previous Huawei. Also the results of sound measurement in gsmarena review are similar to those of HTC One X review:
I think the methods of sound quality measurements aren't very accurate and strongly depends on the environment, measuring equipment and event on the specific phone unit (I think such type of benchmarks should be repeated on several units to control convergence of results).

I'm not scientific with my sound reviews but from my personal experience my XT912 RAZR sounded "meh" quality.
My HTC One S sounded great, probably because of the whole Beats thing.
My RAZR i is on par with my HTC One S for sound quality.
This is all done from me driving around in my '97 Olds with a Cassette to MP3 adapter so take it with a grain of salt... but I am happy with the quality

Could it be, that only some handsets are affected? Because a few people complain about the quality, and a few say it's completely fine. And only one reviewer mentioned the problem. I had the obnoxious clicking sound when a track stopped on the Desire aswell, and I would really love, if the Razr i wouldn't have that problem. Could a beter set of headphones help? Me buying this phone is riding on this, because I really love it so far, a compact all-rounder, that has a lovely design, and is something special.

update: the tables have turned! i had a 2nd razr i delivered over the weekend. this unit has no noticeable 'hiss' as described above. not sure if the 1st unit was defective or something moto have amended in newer batches? either way i'm more than happy with the audio quality now on the replacement razr i and can fully recommend it to others. i'll be keeping the razr and returning the gnex yes the gnex is still marginally ahead audio quality wise. but the trade off with having a device that can store my entire music collection on removeable sd vs slightly lesser audio performance is well worth it imo.
both units were from reputable online retailers.

Oh dreaded Moto! Defy speaker problem repeats itself? Can you check serial numbers (and other info) on the stickers on both boxes? Perhaps they've different manufacturing dates.

Yeah, Defy problem wasn't exactly this one, but it was massive and annoying and moto had to admit the issue later.

Official Sound Quality Thread

Anyone have experience with the S4 Pro audio chip? As far as I know, Qualcomm uses there own DAC, not a Wolfson or Yamaha. Lets hear your thoughts!

This is the one thing that makes or breaks a phone, does any other phone with an S4 processor use the DAC used in the N4?

I hope that the n4 sounds pretty good. It's really necessary for me

Couldn't agree more. I have the i9300 right now, and while the audio quality is good, the volume from the headphone jack is weak. Seems like I constantly have the volume at least 3/4 when out in public to hear my music.

The main reason why I am selling my T-Mobile s3 is cause of the audio if n4 dosnt have good one I am sticking with my gs3

my brother has the original galaxy great sound every time it rings or plays music it,s fantastic i gave it to him so i can by the S3 and now i F*** envy him......... best Galaxy ever............... if u owned G-nexus how is the audio on it compare to GS1

if the Nexus 4 audio is the same as Optimus G, then here ya go straight from GSMArena.com:

dynamic range and noise leave something to be desired. i think all this means is that the device doesnt go very loud. they probably capped the volume in favor of low THD

Can't be any worse then the GS3. MY i9300 volume is weak.

comparison GSMArena did between SGS3 and the Optimus G:
"Both the Samsung Galaxy S III and the LG Optimus G posted some excellent scores in our audio quality test. The Galaxy S III output is generally a bit cleaner, but the difference is a bit hard to detect with a naked ear. The two are also quite evenly matched, when it comes to volume levels too - sadly neither of them is particularly impressive in that aspect. If we had to pick we'd give the Galaxy S III the win here, but no matter which one you choose, you'd be getting pretty good audio output."

Having used Voodoo Sound from day one of release until now, and as a sound tinkering audiophile, what I would need most is basically the equivalent to voodoo louder, ability to amp it up and down since if that's used well it doubles clarity and soundstage by getting the perfect output which matches your cans.

Nexus 4 I believe is a mindblowing handset.
Only doubt I have is about the audio-quality.
I'm in between the Iphone5, HTC One X+ and the N4.

Not loud locales, normal shopping center environments. That's with Klipshe S4 headphones that do a decent job of blocking out sound too. Even the S2 was better at volume from the headphone jack.
