Why am I always "Roaming"? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good morning all.
As per title - I've tried changing every setting I can find, but that "R" is a stubborn SOB that will not go away.
IIRC it first appeared after my first custom ROM flash about 4 weeks ago, but is still there after reflashing any stock firmware (both 2.2 and 2.2.1, flashed via Odin and OTA updates. Kies just locks my pc up, and will be eliminated when I get home. What a POS that is..)
I have deactivated data network mode by choice because of my carrier's hugely generous 100Mb per month limit, but it makes no difference when it's activated.
Makes no difference whether I select network manually or automatically either - it finds and locks on quickly, but the status is always roaming. In settings>about phone>status I have:
mobile network state - disconnected
mobile network type - EDGE.
IEMI etc is all good.
The phone is locked to my carrier, so I can't "roam" as such here in Norway, but I want to find a way to disable/have some control over it before I go to France next week, otherwise my bill could be enormous.
Zero help from my carrier's customer service ("we don't know, call Samsung"), so I thought I'd ask the real experts here first.
Carrier is Tele2 in Norway - noen andre som har hatt slike problemer/anyone else with similar probs?
As always, many thanks for any help.

WEIRD! Emergency call only! O_o

This one is pretty *beep* up! The phone was working pretty fine last time I looked at it (30 minutes ago), I put it in my pocket and had dinner (as always), then I took it out to make a phone call and it says just "Emergency call only" instead of showing my phone operator (3 ITA). I tried rebooting, no luck! Still the same.
Strange thing is that it has signal (full) but I can't make/receive calls or use data network. If I go under Settings -> Wifi -> Mobile networks settings and I look for operators it searches and I can see all of them (mine included) but I cannot select it!! Neither mine nor another one (TIM, which is the roaming default one for my operator when there's no signal)...it just says "Unable to connect. Try later".
Weirdest thing of all is that I AM RECEIVING PUSH EMAILS from gmail!!!
Anyone has a clue about this??? Has it ever happened to anyone?
Btw, I'm using zeroblaster rom, which is based on official italian froyo firmware...everything was working so good until ten minutes ago!
Hope I don't have to reflash...
Just got weirder: put my sim on another phone...it registers without problems on the network.
Then put the other's phone's sim on my sgs...it registers without problems.
Then switched again: Emergency calls only
WHAT THE ****??!? (what are we? children? sorry mod...lol)

It is WAY weird imho! The weirdest thing being that I'm still receiving gmail's pushes after 5-6 reboots while it keeps saying "emergency calls only".
Also I saw that when the phone boots, while it's loading the launcher, widgets, etc. it gets the connection for like 2-3 seconds it shows my operator (in the lockscreen), then it switches to "emergency calls only"...
I'll wait another hour (maybe as the issue came out of nowhere it'll go away? ) then I'll try reflashing...since I had to change to k9 anyway to fix the /system corruption etc. -.- I'm already backing-up...
Hope the flash will fix this though...it's really a pain in the ***

No that's not it, because putting H3G sim on another phone WORKS!!
And anyway, when H3G's down it uses TIM as roaming...this time I cannot even select TIM as operator, it refuses! And normally you can always use tim in roaming if you want (even when H3G has signal...)!

Hmmmm... That is weird alright.
If you purchased your SGS through your carrier H3G I would still call them to report it as there are now 2 of you experiencing the same issue so it cant just be phone related and if it is then they will have to honor your warranty to replace or fix it (both of you)...
It's happening to me too.. i also use H3G Italy on my Galaxy S and i have this issue since around 19:00 this evening with my work SIM card
I have a Tayutama 1.0.0 ROM based on the JPM Froyo ROM.. it's the first time this is happening to me..

Well... That is 3 of you so it must be carrier related in some way. Again... Call your carrier and explain what is happening. Explain that when you put the sim into a different device it works ok but in the SGS all you can do is make emergency calls and they should be able to tell you what is going on.
Make sure to post back as I am now interested in seeing what your issue is / was...

JP5 (i tried another one, don't remember what version but it's the same, it is not firmware related)
in settings->about phone->status it says:
network: 3 ITA
mobile network type: UMTS
service state: out of service
mobile network state: connected (and it works... )
but ... int the status bar it shows "Only emergency calls"...
i haven't tried another phone yet... will do now...
edit: tried my sim on another phone and another sim on my phone.... it works....wtf?

You just answered your own question I think. "service state: out of service" says it all I believe even if the sim cards DO rgister on another phone for whatever reason.
The fact is the they dont register on your Galaxy S so call them and report the issue and they should be able to help you...
Yeah well, you see, that could be a problem because...H3G has a TERRIBLE customer care, lol! Basically the thing is you can't call them...you need to send an email, and an answer will arrive 2-3 days later. That's not good enough for me! If it doesn't get fixed tomorrow I'll go directly to a 3shop and they'll call someone higher to understand this. Hope they fix it soon though!
Anyway...now I have a strong curiosity: could it be JUST the SGS? If so...WHY???? I tried putting the simcard on a Nokia E71 and it works...does anyone have another android phone with H3G? Could it be somehow "system"-related? Because I can't figure out why a specific phone device shouldn't work point-blank with my operator! And that's even a phone they sell themselves!!
Rebooted and now it WORKS! THANK GOD (even if I'm atheist....)
Still would like to know why it did this!
I had a similar problem where if I was in an area with bad reception it would default to emergency calls only. But the funny thing is when I go into the menu settings I can see my carrier and when I try to select it, it says network unreachable. Eventually I would get signal but the tab still says emergency calls only. Tried making calls but it wouldn't allow.
Initially to rectify the problem I rebooted the phone and that worked but got annoying. So I realised that if I left it for a couple of mins whenn it had reception it would fix itself. As of recently (last 2 months) I haven't any problems.
Btw i'm on jpm and my carrier is 3 australia. It's rubbish service

Hello,
Same thing happening to me... It must have something related to signal strength, i went downtown and phone was perfectly fine.
But at home it keeps loosing signal, i dialed *#*#0011#*#* and it shows changing BAND... as if it was searching for service on different bands...
But the thing is, i tried inserting the SIM on other 2 phones and i get a FULL signal, so i guess signal is coming pretty intense here... why is the SGS loosing it? i have no idea...
By the way, i am from Brazil, and that started happening after i flashed my rom to FROYO VJJPA..
me too, has no signal at home but works for another phone.

[Q] XT890 - Data Roaming Issue

Hi Folks,
I hope you can help me with a data roaming issue I am seeing on my RAZR i. I have data roaming disabled in the options.
There seems to be a lag of some kind, where the RAZR i will not recognize a cell/operator switch while in standby/locked mode.
I can reproduce the error everytime - I have the phone locked and connected to my bluetooth handsfree in the car - it will show my home network operator. I cross the border and drive to a point where I know 100%, that I have lost home operator connectivity. The BT handsfree will show my home network operator - data will be sucked in the background, since the phone believes it is still booked in under my home country operator.
I helped myself by setting my contract to explicitly activate roaming everytime by sending an SMS message - I am getting the notification SMS everyday, that data roaming has to be enabled, and I am now trying to consume data in a foreign country....
As soon as I press the power button and wake the phone up, the network operator will immediately switch to the foreign countries operator and data roaming activity will cease...
I have tried this well over hours already as well, to leave it in standby state, to see if it will eventually recognize the operater switch, but even after 6hrs at my workplace (50km away from the border) it was still showing my home countries operator.
This has happened to me on ICS 4.0.4 as well as JB 4.1.2 - I thought the update might resolve it.
I am stock JB Retail EU, unrooted (thanks Moto) and locked BL.
Anyone else observing this or able to reproduce the fault? I have opened a ticket with Motorola but their first "repair" attempt was to flash the latest firmware again, which did of course not resolve the error....
thanks a million for your time reading this and maybe offering some insight on what might be causing the issue.
cheers, Stefan
Out of curiosity, is this your first Android phone? And also do you have data to show that other Android phones switch instantly when crossing the border?
(Not trying to be rude, just that the expectation on that behavior might not be feasible and it is not the Phone's or Motorola's fault, I have no idea at the moment)

Appreciate the quick response Omar, and no worries I don't see your question as rude. This is indeed my first Android phone, however - I think a fundamental function like Data Roaming should work immediately when the event is about to occur, since it can inccur significant cost..
When it is switched off, I expect the phone to not download data when it is on a foreign network, so I assume it would be an easy thing to "program" polling cell-information again before I start the download, no?

Need to block international roaming - I live near Canadian border
Since we do have that option to select "Home Only", see if that makes a difference. I think that might even block the phone calls too .. but try it as a first approach.

Oops, I couldn't find it ... maybe it was there on ICS? But you can also try under Network Operators try unchecking "Choose automatically".
There's an option for data roaming under Mobile Network settings, just uncheck it if it's enabled...

This is what I have unchecked from the very beginning, but the issue is, that the phone is not obeying that setting.. thus the thread...
@Omar-Avelar, I don't have my Razr currently to check your suggestion with the operater selection - Motorola had me send the phone in another time, "to fix it" - so apparently they are admitting there is an issue in the way it is behaving.. I wonder if anyone else has the issue or it is just my phone - which would mean hope in terms of an "easily repairable hardware defect"...

Hi Omar, received my phone back yesterday - tried this morning and of course it is still not working.. I will try your suggestion of disabling the automatic network selection tomorrow morning on my way to work and see if that works.
What I did notice, is that I seem to have a different baseband version, than the official specs are suggesting:
according to this site:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=reposi...0_android_4.1.2_ota_system_upgrade_91.2.26001
the baseband is supposed to be:
SUNRISE_SMB_REV30_V2_R3_1233.C7_sec
however, my phone is showing:
SUNRISE_SMB_REV30_V2_R3_ENZO_1251.B_SEC
the name somehow smells custom made fishy to me - I am sure I never messed with this however. My girlfriends Razr i is showing the same version and I know she never ever touched it other than doing the OTA upgrade, so I wonder if there was a faulty OTA distributed at some point?
Could this be the culprit? If so, can I switch to the "correct" baseband without unlocking/rooting?
Really appreciate all your feedback and help so far.
cheers, Stefan

I'm on Tescomobile (O2 provide the network) and have my data roaming off and the phone never locks onto another provider, as I understand the problem for you is when cross a country border which I don't (being an island and no borders) I'm due to go to vacation in South of France in 5 weeks and I'll check then whether my roaming switches on when I change to another provider there.
Have tried select another network (Orange) but cannot connect,
Hope I understood your problem.

yes, you got it exactly right. I have no issues within my country (Germany) either, phone stays on T-Mobile and never locks onto another network (O2, Base, etc..), it is like you said, when I switch to another countries roaming partner, the phone in standby mode still believes to be in the home network (T-Mobile).
Watch out in France then, although the issue might not be happening for you - assuming you fly in and switch off the phone. Once you reactivate the phone in the foreign country, it will be actively pulling and seeing the foreign operator I suppose.. In my case the phone switches countries in the background in standby, thus not actively searches/recognizes the change... at least this is my current theory that would match the behavior that I observe on an external hands free unit display...
Right I'll watch it when in France, might even make a working visit to Munich before then. I do know when I went to Hoogeveen in Jan I had a xperia go and that retained roaming off when on kpn.
Sent from my XT890 using xda app-developers app
Hi @Omar-Avelar,
I tried your suggestion this morning and disabled automatic network selection - guess what, I am observing a similar behavior.
The phone does in fact loose network connection at a point when the home network is no longer in reception, but the phone/hands free unit is NOT updated.. it keeps saying "Telekom.de" and shows 3 bars.. Even turning off the external bluetooth hands free unit and disconnecting the bluetooth link, then re.enabling the bluetooth link on the hands free, does NOT update the network operator status. You have to wake up the phone for it to realize it is disconnected from the network.... (good news obviously in the state of being disconnected from the network there is by the nature of design no possibility to retrieve data....)
My non-technical skills tell me, that the baseband is doing it's job of handling the network connections/operations properly, but when it comes to passing on the network piece to the "software/android side" this is where the disconnect is. Obviously the roaming setting is an android feature, that is not handled within the baseband, so if the phone/software doesn't know what's going on, it can't interact.
Any suggestions? fixable? did you take a look at my previous post on the baseband version?

Hi there, how did your trip to France work out? Did you run into the roaming issue?
Hi @Omar-Avelar,
I think I made some progress - I believe the culprit is the intel deep sleep mode. When I interprete the sources correctly, the RAZR i enters deep sleep mode directly when going into standby/phone is locked/screen turned-off. To prove my theory, I installed "WakeMyAndroid" ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gejos.android.wakemyandroidpro&hl=en ), the program is intended to prevent deep sleep mode and keep the phone in standby.. I set the timing to 9 sec and advanced invisible smart wakeup, as well as force wake if data lost - guess what, it works. Network operator switches and the phone immediately turns off data roaming.
Downturn of course is increased power consumption, since the phone never enters deep sleep. It brings me still over the day, so it is an acceptable workarround, I may play with the wake interval, too to increase usage, but I guess there should be a way to check network status in deep sleep mode, no? I am not a developer, so I don´t know what would need to be done, but shouldn´t it be able to poll network status in deep sleep every couple of seconds? Or rather a baseband function to "invisible wake" the phone when network operator changes?
Hope you or anyone else reading this, can help me. Appreciate your time.
cheers, Stefan
Hi @StefanGA do you have any tips or update on the issue?
In my country we pay data traffic by just roaming with another operator (within the same country). Because the signal of my current operator isn't always good, the roaming happen often, resulting in a lot of additional 0,01€ - 0,03€ that pile up.
Thanks
Sorry, Motorola admitted, they have no solution to the problem - I.e. No interest to invest time to research it.. I returned my RAZR i and exchanged it for a RAZR HD.

I'm going bonkers! I'll pay you 50 dollars to fix me!

I have a Note 4 Sm N910L from Korea. I live here in Japan at the moment. I bought the phone properly over Amazon and its new. I bought a data sim for it and it was working perfectly for about 7 weeks then one morning when I woke up there was no signal I have tried everything - updated from 444 to 501 then downgraded again UP and DOwn Maaany times. If I go near the Docomo store I can get connected again and it will stay connected for the 3km back to my home and then go off again when I reach home and not go back on - so I know the hardware still works ( I guess). It now just continually says Limited service or "your card is not authorised to use this network". Ive tried many other sims in the phone, none work.
If you can give me a step by step COMPLETE guide with links to any files I need to fix it, I'll pop 50 dollars in a paypal account the same day I can make my first skype call again!!! First person's info that actually does the job gets the money.
Love my phone and Im absolutely &%$'ed without it.
Hope you can help (the wife is out buying some rope and a straight-jacket as I type)

I loved the way you exposed your problem. I don't come here with a fix but only with few suggestions (so I don't deserve the 50 bucks) :
- check the pins of the sim slot
- check the back screws also and tighten them a little bit
- in network settings try to manually set provider and also choose only one mode (no auto 2g/3g/lte) preferably 2g only

It has happened to me with another phone. Turns out my SIM had failed, so it needed to be replaced. Sometimes it happens and it's quite easy to get a new one, so that would be the first thing I'd do if I were you. I hope you fix the problem soon!
Thanks but I tried the sim contacts I didnt notice any screws loose (except my own of course) I'll check (though not hopeful). I appreciate any suggestions.

Ah I see.
I think I know what's going on.
The N910L supports the following frequencies: GSM 900/1800/1900, UMTS 850/1900/2100 and LTE Band 1, 3, 5, 7.
Docomo don't use GSM at all, instead they use UMTS 800/1700/2100 and LTE Band 1, 9, 19, 21, 28.
Basically your phone is not designed for the Japanese market, as it only supports two of the eight frequencies used by Docomo. The reason you had signal and still have around their store is probably because there's a tower that supports the UMTS 2100 or LTE Band 1 frequency. So you either moved recently or perhaps you didn't but one of the nearby towers was switched to a different, unsupported by your phone, frequency.

try this code in the dialer *#0011# whenever you have signal it helps you to identify which band you are connected with
After that you can buy a signal repeater that support that band and bring signal to your home since its not that far distance 3km from docomo store : )
are you on 5.0.1 ?
some suggestions for you.
settings>mobile networks, there should be the preferred network type
check your access point names again, or try adding again, sending a message to provider would probably give u the settings. :fingers-crossed:

Ive not moved recently, and my childrens phones on the same sim plan and provider works perfectly. Also no matter where I go I never get signal - except right outside doccomo shop. BUT phone worked perfectly for 7 weeks before with great signal. Something has changed regarding my phone I think. Maybe my phone got changed to different settings over the air or something.
Thank you

In network settings , there should be a submenu where you can change it. You can also directly access it with long press on data connection icon in notification drawer

When I long press I get a tick box for allowing a Data network and the Just access point settings tab. No tab for choosing 2g 3g 4g LTE etc.

try this code in the dialer *#0011# whenever you have signal it helps you to identify which band you are connected with
After that you can buy a signal repeater that support that band and bring signal to your home since its not that far distance 3km from docomo store : )

Hello Azizski, I checked *#0011# and the top one says DLCH 10736 ULCH 9786
the other seemingly relavent lines say
MM Cause 0 IDLE/DISCONNECTED-SERVICE
GMM Cause 0 DEREGISTERED/LIMIT
RCC DISCONN RSSI/TX 89/0
Whatever that all means.
Thank you for your help.
are you on 5.0.1 ?
some suggestions for you.
settings>mobile networks, there should be the preferred network type
check your access point names again, or try adding again, sending a message to provider would probably give u the settings. :fingers-crossed:

Hi, I've input the settings maybe a hundred times now - I can do it from memory almost with my eyes shut . The settings are the same as what workedfor 7 weeks. The guy at the counter of my provider input them too - they dont work anymore.. There is only one access point that used to work.

Thanks for your help. I stlll feel the problem is something software or update based, maybe the modem has been changed somehow. Or another setting deep inside the phone.
Does flashing an update also flash a new modem and baseband?

And, just to clarify, your children have Note 4 phones, with the exact same model number (N910L)?

Hi, Yes, I want to try to flash a new modem but Im not sure about the procedure and exactly which files I need. I have tried to flash a few modems via ZOdin but I keep getting a nand write fail. Im a noob at this and am obviously doing something wrong. If you can tell me exactly how to do it I'd be very greatful.

Hi Iridaki,
Nope they have 2 old iphone 4 s' using the same data sim as me. (iijmio ((basically docomo)) ). Sorry about not being clear about that.

M7 losing cellular connection frequently! What is going on?

Hi everyone,
This is a great site with a mass of info! I've used it before to flash my HTC Sensation a few years ago.
Since then, I've had a HTC One X and now a HTC One M7. Ok, the M7 is 'New' (from China). It's in excellent condition and it actually does appear to be new. So I don't really know what's going on there... But anyway, I'm having issues.
The phone can't seem to keep a cellular signal, but Wifi is absolutely fine.
So a bit about the history of the phone; When I got it, it was on Android 4.4.2 IIRC with super CID already done. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed LineageOS onto it - the latest one. The battery life was appalling and it wouldn't charge. The phone signal kept dropping.
I've reflashed it today with an RUU called "RUU_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_7.17.1540.51.exe" and battery life appears to have improved somewhat.
However, the cellular signal keep dropping. Now, I've contacted Virgin UK and explained the situation and they have said the Sim is faulty and it's old apparently and not 4g. They've since sent me a new 4g sim. I've put it in and activated it yesterday.
I still don't understand why my signal keep disappearing.
I've checked and verified the APN details - They seem correct - "Virgin Media Mobile Internet".
The problem appears to be something to do with "Network Mode" or "Network Operator". Sometimes I've noticed that if I go back into the settings and change the selection, sometimes it seems to see the connection again!
Right now, I've selected "2G/3G/4G auto" network mode with "Virgin 2G/3G" as the operator, but I think that soon, it will drop again!
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone here? Thanks, Antony...
Ok, I've just lost signal now, around 2hrs later... My phone has just been left in my house... I've been checking on it every so often.
If I go to "Network Operators" and choose Virgin, it magically works again!
I have full signal again, calls work and internet works. What the?!?!
It's still doing it.
Apparently, it's because I've got a 3G plan but using a 4G sim. Although, that is strange because even if I choose 2G/3G, it still drops.
Mehhhhh.

Can you post a "fastboot gervar all" output please? You have superCID, which means your phone is, or was s-off at one point in time. Maybe you need to flash a different RUU to get everything working

Hey, thanks for your reply!
Since that last post, I've flashed a UK ROM and it was still the same, in a way worse because it dumbed down some options in network settings. I've since flashed it back to the ROM mentioned above. I've now noticed that the problem is something to do with 3G/4G. If I change the network provider to 2G ONLY, the phone works perfectly with my Virgin SIM.
I desperately want to fix this. My new provider which I've switched to doesn't offer 2G, so I'll effectively be screwed.
Here is the data which you asked me to get!

You flashed US unlocked RUU, but that should work fine. You need x.xx.401.xx for WWE, but, as I said, US unlocked should work fine. I had a similar issue with an AOSP ROM, and I resolved it by manually entering my APN settings. Even though all APN settings looked fine, there were some small differences that caused issues. Not a great help, but you could try it, no harm. If thadoesn't work, it's most likely a hardware issue

Hmmm, ok, thanks. I've already messed about with APN details lots of times.
Ahh well. It seems that this phone is doomed. Maybe I'll just have to buy another.
I'll just give it one more go.
Thanks, Antony

Change preferred networks with root

Good day.
As i no longer have the '2g only' option in preferred networks in my phone, i have been searching for an root way to add that to my phone.
I stumbled upon an forum that has an solution on MIUI devices, that consists in changing a value in a database file 'settings.db' with an SQL editor. (see attached image)
It seems that Sony must have the file in another directory, as the db file was supposed to be in '/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases', but in my phone i couldn't find the file.
Could anyone direct me to that file?
Thank you.
At least I have an option "GSM only" in preferred network settings. I'd think it means "2G".

You don't need to do any of that. Open you phone and type *#*#7378423#*#*
Then go into Service settings and choose GSM_UMTS, or GSM_ONLY.
You may have better results with the first option, but if you fail to get any signal, try the second.
Good day and thank you for your reply.
I already used that way with the service menu, but every time i want to switch between 2g and 4g, i have to do that procedure, that is not very pratical.
That is why i am searching a way to change the settings in my phone to accomplish that more easily.
The only 2 options in my phone is '2g/3g' and '4g/3g/2g'.

Good day.
For 3 main reasons.:
1 - Most of the time 4g uses 4x more battery power than 2g.
2 - In my country house, 4g is unstable, and keeps switching between 4g and 3g.
3 - Throughout the day, while at work, i use my phone mostly to receive messages in Whatsapp and Facebook messenger, so i don't need that much throughput.
Thank you.

Most providers these days will sell you a signal booster. Connects to your home broadband but puts out a 3g/4g signal for your phone to lock onto.
I use Vodafone, they have Suresignal
I think trying to fight your phone connecting to a 4G mast is a loosing battle.
Good day.
I remembered, if i flash with flashtool, the 'modem' or other part, from another country's FTF file, would it bring back the '2g only' option?
Thank you.

Fortunately, the whole different modems for different regions thing disappeared a few years ago, what a nightmare.
But having said that all firmwares are equal, I do remember being told about 2g being enabled as a choice in a Russian build. I was being corrected for saying that they are all the same. But I can’t find the post or help you with any more than a maybe….
As I have said earlier, at least I have an option for GSM only. I'm on the latest Customized NOBA (Nordic/Baltic) 47.2.A.4.45. I don't know if flashing some file from the fw would bring the option to a firmware that is lacking it though...
Oh cr*p, there goes my last hope Thank you anyway.
Guess i'll have to try and flash ROM's from all the country until i find one with the option, although i already tried the Russian build and no option.
Just the last stretch for this phone until the Galaxy S10 arrives.

Try Customized NOBA. If you don't get the option with that, it's not about fw but your service provider. If you are flashing the whole ROM that is.

Yes, thank you. This weekend i'll try that. What is strange that i had '2G only' option in Oreo, but not Pie. And other users that even replied to my post say that they have the option in their phone.

Nope, none of the other country ROM had the '2G only' option .
Thank you anyway.
