[Q] Removed SIM = OMGWTFWIPE!? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well pretty much as the title says, I removed the SIM from my Galaxy S today to use in another phone as it was going flat and I had no access to a charger, turned it back on without a SIM in it when I finally put it on charge because I wanted to read something I wrote into AK Notepad and holy crap, everything is gone, the phone is back to being a fresh install of my ROM. Is this meant to happen, can it be avoided in future? I've been using my old HTC Magic occasionally on WiFi with no SIM and it would be extremely annoying if this happened again.

No it's not supposed to happen.

Tilt - Autocomplete Has Stopped Working

Greetings,
I recently updated the stock AT&T ROM, and am a user of KaiserTweak.
Following my update to the new stock Tilt ROM, I no longer get autocomplete either when typing out a message OR (and this is the annoying part) when I want to send an email. Previously, I could enter the first letter and all of the entried beginning with that letter would come up.
Can any kind soul please let me know how I might be able to restore this? My current KaiserTweak autosuggest is set at 6. Of course, I am getting 0.
Thanks!
I recently had this problem with mine using Kaiser Tweak... Turn off XT9 in Kaiser Tweak if you have it enabled and then soft reset and it should work fine. This is what i did and my auto complete came back on no problems. If that doesnt work then I have no idea what it could be. Im still a noob.
SOLVED
That was it. XT9 is a 'advised' setting too ... YIKES.
well i didnt update the new att rom, nor do i use kaiser tweak. i just have stock everything & mysteriously my auto complete stopped working. well its not that it doesnt work, but there is a 15 second lag or something on it. and when it does work it pisses me off bcuz i'll click on the item i wanted to auto complete & it doesnt go away (bcuz the lag) so i'll click it & start typing the next word & it keeps adding the auto complete entry!
i've tried soft reseting, tried, cutting the phone off, and i've noticed i've just got a huge lag on the whole phone w/in the last hour or hour & a half. i cut the phone off & removed my sim & then started it back up & there is no lag whatsoever. could it be something that ATT is doing on their networks or something? pissing me off bad tho...bcuz i've been finding little POS problems day after day w/ this phone and when you spend that damn much money on one, you figure that you wont have to worry about all these little problems...and they add up to amount to one pissed off customer. hell if att had something else w/ wm6 & office & wifi, i'd be using it now instead of feeling like im getting shafted by purchasing this POS.
I understand that your phone is behaving in a way that you do not like. It is either:
1. a bad phone - take it back
2. it is behaving correctly and you do not understand it - in that case indicate here AFTER SEARCHING what your problems are and I am pretty sure that you can get them solved.
3. you have hosed something up - again AFTER SEARCHING ask and you shall receive.
As a newbie myself I have found this a wonderful wealth of knowledge. HOWEVER - if you do not TRY and helpyourself - put on your asbestos suit.
Now - it is entirely possible that you have purchaseda high maintenance phone that has lots of power that you do not need and should not have because it will take more than you want to invest in it.
Your decision.
(BUT - I would quit griping here because you will get VERY LITTLE sympathy.)

yeah i wasnt really looking for sympathy...but thanks for the tip, i'll digress prior to the rant next time. its just getting more & more frustrating. the purpose of my post was to in fact garner some sort of assistance in regards to the auto complete not working on the phone.
the other issues i've had w/ the phone are issues that are seemingly unable to be fixed. ie. the camera lag issues, the utilization of the phone as a 56k modem, or other things like that. i wouldnt say the phone is too much work for me as i dont mind putting forth the effort but it just makes me wonder how a phone can be sold so haphazardly without many of these issues resolved prior to it being released. /end rant
edit: i just wanted to shed more light in regards to the situation that i've found out. this is the only way i can replicate the issue.
i turn the phone on. go into messaging, its defaulted back to keyboard input, i change it to block recognizer. begin to input letters. no auto complete. after about 3 words, auto complete pops up. i click one of the options. it doesnt go away. i wait for the auto complete applet to leave. it does, i begin to type & at this point the lag has commenced. auto complete will not show up again unless i stop adding letters to the sms. when i do so, about 8-10 seconds later the auto complete pops up. i finishe the sms & send or cancel it. now everything is laggy. i cant access apps, if i lock the phone i cant unlock it. everything is frozen w/ an absurd delay, as in i've waited over 5 minutes & the unlock will not remove itself. the only thing that i can do is turn the screen off by clicking the power button. when i resume i get the top today bar and the bottom unlock bar, everything in the middle is blanked out. the only way i have been able to continue passed this point is to pop the sim door forcing it to cut the phone off, then replace the sim door lock. if i dont use the auto complete function on the phone i dont have any issues whatsoever. hopefully the added info helps. thanks.
After reading this I checked and autocomplete was not working! I recently updated Kaiser tweak and remember putting 6 words in. When I checked, it was set to 0 words. I changed it back to 6 words and is working fine again. Not sure how it got set to 0.

"SIM card is Missing" When turning off Airplane Mode

So I recently got back from a trip to Maryland (I live in Michigan) and now I am experiencing frustrating behavior from my Tilt. In places where I use to have acceptable signal (typically 2 bars, sometimes one if I angle just wrong behind a wall) I now get "no signal", however, when I reset the phone or when I turned the radio off and then back on again it would connect to the network just fine. I tried to use the "Airplane Mode" in the communications manager to simulate switching the phone off, and almost every time I do this it immediately says that my SIM card is missing. I have to take out the card, wait a few minutes, and then reinsert it for the phone to work normally again. I don't believe this to be an issue with a loose card, as it only happens as soon as I attempt to use Airplane Mode. Jostling the phone, opening and closing it, nothing else seems to trigger this. Can someone explain to me what's wrong, and how I can fix it?
Have you ever flashed a rom on the phone or anything?
No, I use the stock 6.1 AT&T rom. I do use Manilla 2D, but I've been using that for awhile.
Sync up the contacts or use PIM backup, save all of your files and do a hard reset.
that's what I was afraid of, oh well, It'll give me an excuse to clean out my phone of apps I don't use.
thanks, I'll update if that works.
Yeah it's pretty painless to redo your phone. Good luck

Account and contacts gone after battery "broke" - help?

Hi all, please help me find my lost data!
The problem:
My google account is gone, with all my contacts, calendar, etc. And I hadn't synced them with google for ages! :crying:
The background:
A few days ago my (recently bought) Anker 2500mAh battery died, completely. The last I heard from the phone was the "Low Battery" sound, and when I checked later it is was completely dead. I tried to charge it via charger/USB but it refused to give any sign of life. Luckily I remembered reading about a similar issue here on xda about a year ago, where the solution was to kick-start the battery manually using a DC power supply. I charged the battery for a few minutes according to this method (using a DC power supply here in the office lab) and yay - the phone came alive again and could resume charging as normal via USB. Then I discovered that all my contacts and calendar appointments were gone!
Exact steps taken:
1. The battery died
2. Charged the battery manually
3. Inserted other SIM-card (from backup-phone)
4. Replaced battery and booted phone with new SIM inside
5. Pulled battery out, switched back to old SIM card
6. Booted, noted the battery stats seemed a bit wonky
7. Rebooted to recovery, wiped Battery-stats, rebooted again
8. *Everything seems alright... Hey, where are my contacts?!*
Phone info:
I'm running CM9.1 (June 22 nightly, 2012, hehe).
Is there a way to restore my old contacts and/or calendar or extract them from some local file? Or is it gone forever?
If someone says "nandroid backup" I will cry, because I deleted all my backups about a week ago for emergency space reasons!
All help appreciated!
Yeah the inserted sim from other phone did it, not the battery. Nothing I know can bring them back, maybe inserting original sim, but I think that won't happen.
Syncs are Important.
You can try, contacts.google.com. Just incase the sync with different sim overwrote older sync with all contacts. Just navigate a bit till you find it in contacts.google.com. Small chance a sync did happen.

Thanks for the input, I also suspected that the new SIM was the culprit, but I'm still a bit baffled about it. Who came up with the idea of deleting tons of non-synced user data without a warning or anything? "The user changed the SIM (vacation abroad?) - he probably doesn't care about contacts or meetings anymore!" :silly:
Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion, I'll see what Ican find in contacts.google.com... (Original SIM was already inserted, but no luck)
yeah I have been there done that. Its basically a security issue, insert different sim then lose all. Or at last thats whats supposed to happen. Been that ways on almost all phones I had, actually never read it in a manual. Should be some warning about that.

[Q] SIM Card causing reboots on my Xperia T

Hi guys,
Earlier i found out that my sim card was the one responsible for the sudden reboots of my Xperia T. Does anybody know how to fix this? I am currently on stock JB 4.3 with locked boot loader.
Thanks for the help
Hi there,
I would like to post my 2 cents here too, cause this is bug or whatever it is so annoying that I want to smash my Xperia against the wall.
It started shortly after I upgraded my Xperia T to 4.3 (.295). First I thought it is caused by wrong USIM placement, but even if I pull it out and follow the click to be sure it is placed properly, reboots appear from time to time. I was trying to track the source of this with "standard" steps like factory reset, installing apps and do settings without using Backup&Restore app, testing another USIM however without success, using phone with/without microSD card. I even upgraded to latest bugfixing .199 today but those damn reboots persists.
Maybe these observations will help to solve this issue:
- reboots appear usually after using apps using internet connection (mostly local news, gmail, Chrome etc) and, whats interesting, when screen is off
- mostly when on HSPA, not wi-fi
- when I play music, using PowerAmp, not tested on other mainly because I have no other installed
- sometimes after the call
- once or twice it happened when unlocking the phone
- reboots stops only if battery is totally drained or if I notice smell of the the burning flesh of my thigh and I put my screen on/or reinsert USIM.
I will observe more, but Im loosing patience
There were no reboots when on stock 4.1.2 with locked bootloader with root. I also had to turn off SIM card lock, because I need to be reachable. I like this phone, 4.3 is nicely done but this is driving me mad. I consider to downgrade and visit my local vendor, but beforehand I decided to ask community.
Sorry if this is discussed somewhere else here, I just spotted this post and added my POW. Thanks for your help
it may related to the battery

mine was the opposite, reboots all the time when tethering unless I kept the phone on charge on stock 4.1.2. now on 4.3 and only had two reboots after heavy usage, but the phone wasn't on charge and was hot.
Looks like the reboots are caused by handover between 2G and 3G networks. I have set my T to stick on the 3G only and reboots have disappeared. Two days without single reboot
However I have found strange dots on the display recently, like some layer of the display is too thin and light is bit brighter in these parts, so I need to pay a visit to my vendor anyway.
Theme
Hello. I updated to 4.3 rooted ROM, and always restarted and I cant start the phone when is SIM in. Tried reinstall via CWM, nothing helped. And... yes.. maybe installed programs caused this boot loop, try install step by step program to program and succes. I found Woody theme. When I setup this theme, phone cant process Sim pin code section at start. Deleted theme helped me, and now work fine Darklord Rom
Well, I have finally isolated issue and it is not related to cellular handovers. Reboots are caused by faulty mechanism holding SIM card in place. Despite I hear and feel obvious "click" indicating SIM card is in place and mounted, it is not. After undefined time SIM card gets loosed and you can take it out very easily. Not sure if this is just me or it is a construction issue, but I saw too many posts regarding reboots. Time to check guts of your Xperia folks..

This reboot issue start happening to me just last night, no Wi-Fi no 3G, just using "UBreader" (reading a ebook, obviously ) before sleep... it reboots 3 times within an hour calling for "sim/usim card removed"... After third reboot, I open the card holder and removed SDcard, nothing happen, then I remove the sim card and did it again [the reboot] this time on porpuse, so... yeah, I think what @daemin says is true, the mechanism for holding sim card gets loose after a while... sad but true...
Maybe, when holding the phone, we press to hard on that side without noticing and that cause the problem, I don't know... but this morning I check at running apps and all or mostly all say 7 hours "running" so I think phone didn't reboot after I left it there for sleep... who knows...

Recent OTA update causes my phone to overheat G920AUCS4CPF1

ATT auto updated my phone. Everything seems to work like it should except that the area next to my sim card is hot enough to burn me. If I put my phone in airplane mode everything is fine. My battery life is less than 4hrs. I have done a factory reset with no success. I want to install a custom rom but I cannot find a root for this new version. Is there any way to install a new rom with no root?

I am also having the same issues. I thought it was a hardware problem, but after seeing your post I'm suspecting it is something else. I even went to the AT&T store to get a new SIM just in case that was the issue. It suxs, my phone is getting intermittent network connectivity and the right side of the phone is roasting. I also performed a factory reset to no avail... Anyone else having this issue?
I am having the exact same issue. Its basically made my phone unusable. Once the phone starts connecting/talking it gets very hot and i lose cell service. It like the cell radio starts working overtime, over heats and stops working . I have to put it in airplane mode t get the phone to cool down. Not sure what to do since it seems like a software issue. All started after the update.

Since my phone is unusable and there is nothing I can do software wise (Installed all AT&T updates and performed factory reset), I decided to call Samsung and put the phone in for a warranty repair. We shall see what happens after the 9 days it takes them to make repairs. Guessing that they wont actually troubleshoot the issue, just verify nothing is physically wrong with the phone, liquid spill, drop damage, etc. and then just send me a clean referb.
Success!!!
I performed a factory reset and set the phone up as a new phone ignoring my backups. I installed all the updates and everything is working again.
The locked bootloader on this phone is bull****. ATT/Samsung broke my phone with an update and I could not install root to fix it myself. I will only buy apple or google phones from now on. I hope that the companies that make the OS might be a little more careful with their updates.
