[Q] Any way to flash to stock without connecting? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there everyone, I have to take my phone to warranty tomorrow, and I am currently on Serendipity 6.2 and using the Paragon kernel. My problem is, I can't connect via USB, hence going to warranty. I can use swiFTP to get files to the SD and then cwr to flash them, but I don't know how to get back on the stock rom and master clear without odin..
Any help is really appreciated since I don't want to pay the $430 for broken warranty.

umm why cant you connect by usb?
and worse case scenario, they cant proove you voided the warranty if it never turns on again *for some reason*. the electronic guts are worth about $50 to them, they dont waste valuable time and specialized equiptment to read a broken device to see if you voided you warranty. its not financially feasable.
you would have to find a cwm stock flash NOT rooted, with stock kernel, could get messy...

I don't know why I can't connect, I got the phone from At&t as a warranty replacement, and it shows that it is connected (lightning bolt on battery) but it never actually charges or shows up on my computer. (Win7 64 bit)

do you have the drivers installed? the proper ones NOT the automatic ones?

Yes, I've tried every driver I can find. I know its the port on the phone, because when I go to use the wall charger, the phone says its "charging" but it doesn't go up at all.

I think I got it. I flashed a KB1 rooted/deodexed rom and kernel, and my phone looks stock now Only problem, it shows superuser as an app. Any way to at least hide it/change name and icon?

wave it infront of a large speaker magnet for a while until it doesnt turn on.
or microwave for 2 second intervals. avoid physical damage!!
super user gone... and everything else
TAKE OUT YOUR SIM!!!!!!!!!!!

Poke around here a little more!
I am pretty sure I saw cwm flashable stock rom files on this forum. Might have been in the development sub-forum.

I think Clockwork can uninstall and reinstall Super User.
Sorry, it's SpeedMod that has that.

Say, nooby answer, but y not try the aio toolbox and try to boot into revovery? Just guessing....

I had a problem that sounded exactly like what your explaining and the only thing i needed to do to fix it was use a different usb cord. Bending the cheap pos cable from samsuck can break the soldered contact points more easily then you would think.

Like, this isn't even funny anymore. My phone is bricked and I've used the Jig. Now it doesn't even go to the download screen, it just skips to a Galaxy S Gt-i9000 screen and when I try to run Odin one click - it gets stuck on File Analysis.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW??!?!??

Okay, your phone is obviously getting to the stage that it can receive commands (seeing as Odin can recognize it). Download ADB (android debug bridge). I'm not going to go into a tutorial now. Ask if you need one, I'll write one.
Once you have that downloaded and installed, go to the directory containing adb.exe and type "adb reboot download" without the quotes. Your phone should reboot into download mode.
Edit: Found this standalone ADB file, in case you don't want to download and install the whole SDK. Props to velnens123.
BTW; I'm assuming you already have drivers for your phone installed. If not, this will not work, nor will pretty much anything else.

Never heard that one before, but don't think that's possible. Some of the guides I've read suggest placing the resistors on the outside places of the usb port, not on any specific prong. Regardless, if his computer recognizes the phone (which it does... Odin can see it), then ADB should work perfectly.

Those are the ones you need. Dunno if you have x64 or x32 Windows, but that file should have both.
Also, be sure to run ADB more than once. If you get Device Not Found, do not close the command prompt window, try unplugging and replugging the phone and wait for Windows to make it's hardware detected noise, then try again.
Yeah, the jig needs to be on pins 4&5, closest ones to headphone port iirc. Never had to use one personally but pretty sure that is what I've read.
jig can and will turn your phone in if the wrong prongs are touched
Thread is getting off topic; there are more than three posts about the same fix without a reply from the OP. Give it a rest...
Anyway, any proper jig should, should, be made with an actual mini USB, not just shoving the resistors into the phone, though it would work, it's just a lot less safe.
I have to agree with every one. I have had to make and use a jig. Sense I had it i tested all the how to's here and if you are not touching the right pins in the port (i highly suggest using a USB plug in) then all it will do is turn it on. They have to be touching pins 4 & 5 otherwise it will just boot up

Have you fixed it yet?
I bricked my captivate pretty badly about 1.5 months ago too but i built a jig and fixed it. It doesn't sound like you've done that yet, though...
If i were you I'd build a jig and make sure the pins and resistances are correct and try again. I've heard the resistance from the skin on your fingers can affect it enough that it not work.
I attached a picture showing which pins to connect on a micro-usb "plug in"
Good luck,

I made a jig, just not with the USB one. :S
I'll probably just buy one off of Ebay for simplicity's sake and lack of interest of wasting more time. I spent more time :/
Can anyone here tell me how C-fone is?

He seems legit to me, but I just want other member feedback to make sure.

Never bought a jig... never really had to (I just got mine replaced under thirty days). I can't give feedback on someone I've never bought from, though he seems to have some considerable rep (positive feedback). I can recommend though, this http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=100
Though for considerably more ($13.00), I can guarantee that that one will work.

I think i hard bricked my phone.......

I was trying to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1 using odin3, and the process removed.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

When i plug it into my computer, neither odin nor my computer recognize that a device has been plugged in.
And i already checked the usb cable, works fine on my other phone

well i guess its a hard brick after all.....
here are your options that you can do:
1. You can call up samsung/ ATT and try to get a replacement captivate (data on phone
will be lost)
2. You can send your phone to connexion2005 (mobile tech videos), the have an
unbricking service for 50$
3. You can try Adam Outler's UnBrickable Mod :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206216
Personally, I would take it to AT&T. I dunno how the stores around your area are, but I took it to a warranty center here in Cleveland, and they replaced it after looking at my old one for like 2 minutes. Sure it's a refurb, and it most likely will have a KB2 baseband making things a little trickier, but easiest (and cheapest) method by far.
How do you convince them to do a warranty claim with a bricked phone? Slightly curious. I know of insurance plans that provide more coverage but doesn't flashing the phone in any manner void the warranty on at&t, samsung, or even the insurance warranty?
Sent from my i897 running MIUI 1.8.12 with TalonMTD kernel.
Yeah im just going to go ahead and take it back to the att store.

UnBrickable Mod is not ready yet. We are working out the details of the communications protocol.
I provide JTAG unbricking service for $30. My method is a bit different then connexion2005. I don't fumble around with wires. I install a header which Samsung skimped out on during manufacturing. The header remains in the phone so it is a simple plug-in operation to reJTAG the phone later if required. This is the proper way of connecting to the JTAG port, through a JTAG header.

[Q] Deadly injured Note

Hello, guys.. I'm having a real trouble with my Note. I bought it 3 months ago, but it seems that today's my "lucky" day and the microUSB connector isn't working anymore. At all. No charging, no "usb connected", no mass storage. It's not charging even when I turn off the phone and plug the charger.
So.. I guess I have to ask for a repair or a replacement. But here's the problem. I've changed both the kernel and the ROM and I have to restore the phone to it's original state before taking it to the service. I read the UNroot topic under the development section, but I didn't understand it well. I need to do it through the phone since I can't connect the device to my computer because of the malfunctioning microUSB port. I can't charge the battery either, so I'm stuck with only 36% power and I can't simply shoot in the dark. I turned the phone to save the power and I hope it should be enough to finish the operation, but I don't really know how to start it. I guess I have to download stock kernal and stock ROM and then flash it somehow (Mobile Odin!?), but I'm not sure and I really need your help.
Any help would be highly appreciated, I'll continue looking around for info.

It looks clean. The cable is okay too. I'm working at Gameloft so we have lot's of micro-usb devices and they're working just fine with the exact same PC and cable.
Anyway, to be 100% sure - how to clean the port? I mean - it's so tiny little hole and there isn't any direct access to it.. But I think it's gone.. It randomly shows "charging" while the cable is not plugged at all. Then it stops.. and starts again.

Put stock rom on your external sd,install mobile odin pro from market and use it to flash the stock rom.And remember donot select ever root, inject su,inject mobile odin. And after it finish flashing, you can send it for service
Put a stock rom and then try cleaning the USB as someone suggested. My usb port would stop working at random and I cleaned the port with a toothbrush and it has worked ever since. That was 2-3 months ago.
Well, thanks guys.. I'll try the tooth-brush trick when I get home and if it fails to solve the problem, I'm gonna flash the stock ROM with MOP and take it to the service. I'll keep you posted.

Not a difference you "see" technically. From my understanding mobile Odin cannot touch bootloaders. Pc Odin can. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. From Chainfires first.post in his Mobile Odin thread, "While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety."

Assumign that you have a micro SD in the slot-
Take the micro SD out and connect it to your computer. Or use airdroid for file transfer over wifi. Whichever way you use, create a folder called firmware and put the .md5 in the folder and flash it through CWM or mobile odin.

USB Bricked!?

When I conect my Black to the pc there is no notification and there is nothing in the pc either. It charges but the Black doen't recognize that it is charging, if i go to the phone status in settings it says it's discharging. there is also a massive battery drain (about 45% at night) that I believe that's related to that since i've tried many different roms including the stock one.
This looks like the usb brick that happens a lot in htc, but I'm not sure.
Does anybody know what's wrong?
Have you tried flashing stock rom back onto it to make sure that it is not an error of the ROM?
This is probably obvious but have you tried reinstalling the USB drivers?
Have u tried mounting USB storage in CWM? Or are you willing to reformat ur SD card?
What is the current state of ur phone? What ROM, kernel, software version, etc?
Plenty of questions to answer so we can narrow down ur query or maybe even direct the questions to the maker of the ROM.

The drivers are instaled. I'm currently with zeus v6.39n and with the rom kernel, but I don't think that it has to do with it since i've tried other roms including the official one and the problem was the same. I'd would preffer not to format my sd card. Do you really think it could help?
NO it wont help. Are you able to charge your phone or not? And did you maybe put any liquid over it? Or maybe ran around with your phone in the rain? Should be pretty easy to solve, if you know someone with technical skills, or give it to a LG service center. I mean I may be wrong, but if it doesnt even recognize a charger, then the USB is definitly broke... If it is still charging properly, try to flash it with smartflash or B2C app if possible. If it doesnt get better then, your USB is definitly malfunctioning. Sorry dude...

Mini froze, now it wont respond...

Hello, my situation is this: S3 Mini running Carbon Rom 4.4.4 , flashed with TWRP. After running great for a few weeks, suddenly after charging all night the phone froze ( was on FB on CM Browser). It was totally unresponsive to any attempts so I pulled the battery ( this did happen a couple times before) and when I tried to restart, nothing. The phone responds to nothing, no download, no recovery, no charger.... battery is charged and I did try a different battery to no avail. The only response I get is if it is connected to a PC before I install the battery then when I install it (the battery) the PC tries to install u8500 usb rom drivers, which of course it never finds. Samsung device drivers are installed on the PC. Odin also fails to see it.
Is it dead? Is it salvageable? Can I recover any data off it?
Sorry for the new thread but it seemed I could not find a case exactly like mine.

I had the same issue after flashing a wrong bootloader. I gave the phone back where I bought it telling that I doesn't know why he didn't started anymore. They replaced my telephone motherboard and now it works.

There's no warranty on my device so taking it back is not an option. The phone was working fine for while so I suppose it's not the bootloader... what suprised me is that it happened outta the blue, not during start up... thanks for the advice though mate.

I think you can try with an usb jig or you can find someone with a jtag (there are millions of guides about those solutions, just google it). :good:

basically from what I've read, the jig you either buy off Ebay for 3$ or solder 300kΩ across pins 4 and 5 of a micro usb connector, But look it up before cause a nuclear holocaust

Honestly, I didnt think the jig would work, which is why Im not in much haste to do it, before you dump it though mate, try and find someone close to you with a JTAG setup.... I havent had much luck with that.
It was an ok phone... either I had high expectations or it was below the hype but that is just my 2 cents... at the end of the day it was a useful tool....
