I see the update is failing for a lot of people on the Samsung Captivate. Mine was reflashed using Odin3, and the update failed like so many others. I reflashed using Odin3 again, tried the update, and the same exact thing happened. The update fails at 50%.
The first time around, I was rooted and lagfixed, I tried it that way, then unrooted and tried again.
The second time around, I made absolutely no changes to the phone whatsoever, except signing in to my google account, and upping the screen timeout to 30 mins.
Doubt that this information is helpful to anybody, but was hoping maybe these symptoms would point to a trend as to why so many people's Captivates can't update.
Also, how many of you that failed used an Odin3 reflash any time before it failed?
I just flashed back to stock using the Odin One Click program and my updated failed at 50%. I tried 4 different time with the same result. I even reflashed a second time, did a Master Clear, and a Factory Reset. Stil no joy.
This morning as soon as I saw the news of the release I immediately hit the software update in the settings menu. Downloaded and just before I went to install I decided maybe it would be smart to do a rom backup with rom manager. Did that, and went ahead and then attempted to install it. It got to 100% and then said update failed, rebooted, said the same thing, update wasn't successful. However, if you checked about phone, it said it was jh7, but none of the jh7 stuff was there. The phone was rooted, sideload enabled, clockwork installed, and bloat removed, that's it. Never flashed a rom or lag fix or anything like that.
At this point I decided to try using the odin one click to stock jf6. Installed it, and tried to update again. Now, I'm getting what most people are getting, update fails very quickly at 50%, the phone reboots with no changes.
So I decided to use my clockwork backup, and restore my phone back to what it was before all this started this morning. Of course, since I remembered to do the backup AFTER downloading and postponing the update, it's sitting there waiting to go. Decided to try it and see if it acted the same as this morning, and now it's doing what it did right after the jf6 one click, gets to 50% and then fails with no effect.
How complete a wipe/restore of the phone is using rom manager? Because the update behavior on mine is different now after messing with odin than it was before, even after restoring it with rom manager.
Rooted with Sideloading on JH2. Not much else done to my phone. It has always worked well.
I didn't even get a percentage when trying to install. Just reboots and says "Update Failed".
Same issue here. Flashed back to JF6 using Odin one click. Update fails at 50%.
Only thing i can think of its that, that particular fw in odin is not the original fw flashed on the phone when bought and it does some sort of checksum or some kind of check.
50%, puke, and now when I click on update it tells me no firmware which I think is funny.
has anyone tried the firmware from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=777291
?
I don't have a PC at work (or even a x86 Mac) to play with.
Mine did the samething. I've used the the one click reinstaller a few times after trying out different roms. Maybe the one click installer changes something and it's blocking the update from totally completing. I hate to reinstall everything again but maybe theres a better way to do a total factory restore so we can get the update.
I'd guess that if it's doing a difference update (just applying the new stuff, not a full ROM) it needs a checksum match to be sure it doesn't bork the phone. Failing that (i.e. anything different from a pure stock phone) it will abort at some point.
There is a pure JF6 stock rom linked somewhere here on the forum--I'll see if I can find it, but it was never stickied or anything. Some guy just uploaded it because the one-click wasn't "pure" so to speak.
I guess this is their way of saying "you don't like our firmwares in the first place, you don't get this one either!"
Mine did all the same as you guys , failed at 50%. So I just got a new phone from att , told them it keep failing update. Did update right in store on new phone and boom installed no problem. On top of that gps is dead on, on new phone with update. Didn't get to try with out update. Already made sure I can get into download mode, no problems there. Note just scared to flash any roms since gps is perfect lol.

I tried using the Samsung Kies program and it says "this device's version cannot be updated". I'm wondering if that one click installer is not what it should be. Maybe if we flash to a different Captivate firmware the Kies program will update it.
I agree, I just like the way the one click installer worked. I know there's other roms/kernels posted, and I guess I'll have to do some legwork here. Here's hoping.
Just reflashed back to stock for the third time using Odin3 One Click and now when I check for updates it It says No Updates Available. Prior to this, it would dwnload the updated and reboot the phone and fail at 50% while installing. Frustrating!
I never use the 1click odin, I always put the .pit and the JF6 file into the 'normal' odin and use that -- haven't seen if anyone has tried that yet anywhere? Maybe that'll work.
BTW I still have no update available even after calendar trick :/
Hey guys, I did root my captivate. My question is do I need to un-root the device to apply the gps update or it does not matter.
Just downloaded JF6
how would I flash this back to my phone?
sorry if thats a stupid question but I cant find an answere seraching
I downloaded JF6 from Samfirmware.com. I'm going to back up my current ROM, then do an Odin w/Repartition and use the JF6 from Samfirware.com.
We'll see if that works. . . .

Tried this a little while ago. I went to run the update and now it's saying that no updates are available.
I spent about an hour on the chat window with ATT support and they can't seem to find a way to reset it to push again. The guy on the other end was knowledgeable as far as I could tell.
hell - he even mentioned froyo. He said they have ALOT of information on it for the captivate but no release date yet.
I am new to android
Since the official 2.2 upgrade is released, I updated through Samsung kies mini without unrooting my stock rom 2.1
then I found the superuser icon vanished
I google it and tried Super One Click
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
...it said rooted but when i download rom manager...the first thing i did is to backup current rom...when i clicked ok for backup...it did nothing...then i tried to download some apps required root to see if it works...every apps required root (super manager, rom manager(appeared not responding for every options), root exploer, etc.) forced close...
i tried one click root for for all models as well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
but i cant even launch the app by using window 7 32 bit...
i tried the alternative way suggest by other ppl by only double click the root 2.2.bat..it pushed an update.zip file to my phone but when i tried to reinstalll package..it failed and say E signature verification failure!?...
I even tried it on mac..but failed as well (i connected my phone and the software said it pushed the update.zip and boot into recovery mode but in fact nothing happening on my phone)
I did a factory reset and wondering how to root AT&T Captivate official 2.2
I'm having the same problem. I don't think any of those one click apps will work with 2.2 official, since they're all for 2.1. I tried all of them, and none of them worked. I'm getting the Atrix soon anyway, so I'm not gonna bother trying to root my Captivate anymore
Have you tried using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418
i tested the KB1 froyo update and rooting via superoneclick just to see how it works. I had to reboot after rooting it though. Superuser was there but it didnt appear rooted. After rebooting, everything worked fine.
I'm back with Phoenix 5.2, which I recommend over the stock froyo update anyway.
Rooting 2.2
I had the same problem. What I found from searching around is that the recovery console in 2.2 is 3e. 3e fixed the loophole most of the rooting software goes after, so , no 2.2 won't root, at least not the same way 2.1 would.
I also upgraded to the leaked Froyo, but later on downgraded to 2.1 so that I could use the normal upgrade methods.
Enjoy !
Is it mean that AIO Captivate Toolbox is not working too?
If it is..then I wont try
been worried to make another factory reset
these threads are so common now.
use SuperOneClick. it works, but you cant use the PSNeuter method, you have to use the RAGE method.....look to the right of the buttons when you load it up, you will see what i am talking about
Dont know what to do at this point...any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Here is what all i have done so far. Late 2010 i downloaded OCLF from android market and rooted 2.1 Eclair had consistant Quad score from 2300-2450. Phone started acting glitchy and slow so i used app to unroot and root back. Worked great for a little while then same problems repeated. So i thought i'll update 2.2 then reroot. Waited on 2.2 through Samsung Kies to release and updated. 1st attempt phone rooted but when booted up it didnt recognize sim or memory card and about 5 force close screens appeared when on home screen. Also, wifi stopped working completely so i bought a new router and it worked again(tried on other wifi locations to test issue before and after). Samsung Kies wouldnt allow another update so i used Odin and it seemed to force everything through. Tried downloading SuperOneClick on WinXP went to root error stated i needed .net 2.0 file, so i downloaded .net v3.5. Went to root again and same error missing 2.0 file. Tried using One Click Root and copied files to memory card clicked 2.2 root phone reboots and i get the "signature verification failed error" a majority seem to be receiving(both done on WinXP and Mac 10.6.6-on Mac phone reboots fine but there is no root in place). Ive also tried other methods i've read about such as OneClickLagFix and z4root, downloading to computer placing on memory card using "MyFiles" that comes stock on device and "Astro Manager" from android market. When i extract files i get a security error that At&t has wonderfully put in place. Also tried rebooting into recovery mode to apply update.zip file and there is no option to install specific file only option to reinstall packages and when i reinstall i get signature verification error. THEN i used Odin to go back to 2.1 tried using SuperOneClick and One Click Root same problems repeat. Used Samsung Kies to go back to 2.2 to make a little faster since i cant seem to root either way and now i have no 3 button recovery mode or download mode. Purchased 3 ohm resistors for a Jig in case i EVER need download mode since my phone seems to be all sorts of messed up(or maybe its just user error). Ive tried many other ways and methods but this post is already too long to list. Phone seems to be running decent Quad score between 1000-1050 but i would appreciate ANY advice to root on either 2.1 or 2.2. I'm running Windows XP and Macbook w/ v. 10.6.6 and i feel as though i had exhausted all options!! PLEASE HELP!?!?

New tried Super One Click Root with 2.1 but always flawless for me with 2.2. You said you tried it with 2.1 but have you retried Super One Click since updating to 2.2?
If that doesn't work try odin back to 2.1 then use galaxy s one click. Only instead of running the program that places the update zip on your phone try manually putting the file i have attached on your phone.
The file attachment labeled Root.zip is the root update file from Galaxy One Click Root from. Just rename it as Update.zip. Put it on internal SD. Goto recovery mode and Reinstall packages (this is for 2.1).

if yo can go into download mode try odin back to stock as what bames said if still no button combos install the leaked froyo from designgears rev02 it will bring back your button combos and you can messed up anything again once settled you did't diasble oclf and file ext2 before flashing something that's your caveat there.. your phone will bounce back and forth with that
I'm starting a new thread on my exploits with my Captivate as I've been trying to get it to work well since updating to the official Samsung Froyo release when it came out (actually since getting the phone last fall). Any tips to get me past the problems that I'm having would be appreciated. I've tried searching the forums and googling the problems I've had, but this has been tedious to say the least, and really hasn't gotten me any further.
When I originally got my Captivate, I tried connecting it to Samsung Kies and I was never able to get Kies to actually recognize the phone and let me use it to move media about and such, so I gave that up. When the Froyo update was released, I installed it per the instructions and kept hitting a dead end until I uninstalled IE9 (I think it was the RC at the time). Then I was able to update my phone, but the update failed and I had to use some sort of recovery console within the Kies update (I'm sorry I don't remember the exact details). This updated my phone to Froyo, at least according to the Settings:About Phone (Firmware version 2.2 Build number FROYO.UCKB1). However, since then the phone has actually seemed slower than before the update and I thought the new JIT was supposed to make it faster. It often freezes on me requiring me to remove the battery to restart it. Also, the data connection will fail at times (the "3G" icon disappears or only shows uploading data despite having 5 bars) and when I reboot the phone I will have voicemail waiting despite having no missed calls. Anyway, I decided I've had enough of this and I wanted to root the phone and install Cyanogenmod. (I'd been thinking of this anyway.)
I tried using the 1-click root as described http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304. This failed as when I clicked on "reinstall packages", it says "E:signature verification failed Installation aborted."
I searched around for this and found information on getting an unsigned update.zip which was supposed to prevent this error. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213) However, I was not able to follow the mount instructions through the terminal emulator as I got this error for that command: "mount: Operation not permitted". My prompt is $ and I'm told it is supposed to be #. I found instructions that this is supposed to change by typing su for superuser, however when I do that it says, "su: not found".
I then found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8985854 which I have been trying to follow the step-by-step to root Captivate posted by clawsthatscratch. (I have an AT&T Captivate and they seem to be referring to Rogers Captivate, but I thought it should work anyway.) These instructions say to open a command prompt from the tools directory, but it seems that you actually have to open from platform-tools instead as the ADB had changed locations. I went through this step-by-step to the command "./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" This did not "kick my out of adb" the first time that I did it, but I've done it again now while typing this post and it seems to be going further and I'm actually seeing a # prompt instead of just the $ prompt.

OK. I think I may have root access. Everything worked up until the "no startup sounds" and "remove bloat" steps. When I try to run these commands, I get a "Read-only file system" error. I'm going to try to install Cyanogen. I'll repost when I see how that goes. Please (oh please, oh please) give me whatever help you can as to why I'm having so many problems running the simpler methods and even the step-by-step method.
From not being able to figure or how to change tot 3e recovery to flashing cm7? Take a step back and think about this

Did you try super one click? It worked fine for me, as well as enabling non market apps..which also worked, as I was able to download the amazon app market and install apps from there
You need to flash back to the stock 2.1 build using odin one click then root then flash your rom. Please use a guide your first time so you don't brick it.
The 3e security found on the 2.2 build gives the failed error so flashing back to stock fixes that by changing back to the old security.

Use super one click or something to get root, then download rom manager from market, download and install clockwork recovery from within rom manager. This will give u the 2e recovery u need. if u cant get into 2e from within rom manager, turn off ur phone, and instead of using the 3 button combo (vol up and down, and power), use 4 button - vol up and down, home button (softkey) and power button. This should put u into 2e recovery, thus eliminating your signature validation problems. Then flash away at will!
Hope this helps.

cant get captivate into download mode now, but I have in the past.? weird to say the least. This phone actually even had cyanogenmod 7 on it at one time but it was a nightly and lots of things were glitchy so I took it back to stock rom with ODIN one click. I finally got it rooted with one click root again yesterday that I found on youtube but couldnt install rom manager due to parsing issue incompatibilities with my version of the android market and 2.1 eclair. Rom manager was not on my version of android market so I'm pretty lost as to how to get this phone back in order. I have the ODIN one click program and was going to go back to stock but now I cant get it into download mode for some reason. I have tried holding every button and removing battery and connecting USB while standing on my head, LOL.??!! is there something you can do while trying to root a phone that can disable the ability to get into download mode? Have I broke it for good? What I'm trying to do is root and install recovery like clockworkmod and maybe one of cyanogenmods stable roms. or some type Jelly bean rom. I am currently still at 2.1 (update-1) android. Tried Kies and it would never connect with my phone on my windows 7 PC so I couldnt update to 2.3.5. and tried to do an OTA update to 2.3.5 and it said and I quote that I had used all my attempts to update and had to wait 24 hrs and try again!?
I have found several good tutorials on how to root and install CWM from android 2.3.5 but havent found alot of tutorials that give instructions on how to go from 2.1 android. There is sooooo much out there online on these phones that it's confusing and I'm stuck and all I want to do is wipe the phone out completely, root, clockworkmod and install a stable rom. Phone is now stuck saying twlauncher has stopped unexpectedly not working I'm stuck please help if you can. HOT MESS HERE!
