Odin finished sucessfully, phone won't turn on - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I run windows XP in a virtual machine on my Ubuntu 10.10 box. I was using I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe to reset my Captivate to stock 2.2 form in order to get an idea of how to run the update process from 2.2.

The phone will not turn on now. If it is turning on, then it is simply a black, unlit screen. Would a jig be worth a try or would I be wasting my time?

The definitive answer to "can I unbrick a Captivate with a jig?" is no. Jigs are worthless unless you have a phone without 3 button fix.
I have 2 captivates here. My wife's phone responds to my jig and my phone does not. This is ridiculous. So, now all you guys can punk those guys who respond with "try a jig".
JIGS ARE WORTHLESS EXCEPT WITH MODEL 1008 AND LOWER PHONES. Almost every phone comes with 3 button fix.

Right. So I'm guessing your phone is 1010 or higher?
It should be made more aware, but I'm pretty sure it's been said somewhere that the two ODIN one-click programs that are running around don't work with any models that are 1010 or higher...

first jig lies, now this.
I have a 1012. What do you use on a 1012? I've used ODIN several times. I got to thinking that this time I did something different.
I think it was one of the following
1. I had AIO Captivate Toolbox idling on my virtual machine. http://files.teamkomin.com/aio-captivate-tool/Install AIO Captivate Toolbox 3.0.msi
2. I executed a lsusb command in Linux outside the virtual machine during the flash.
Both of those actions seem pretty dossile. I would not expect either to do anything to the flash. However, AIO Captivate toolbox may be polling for status or something in a hositle way which caused a miscommunication.

venomio, where did you get that information?

I have a 1011 buld and my jig has worked without issue and yes my 3 button does work as well. First things I tested when I got it. It came loaded with 2.2 and I used odin one click that I have had for a while that put me back to 2.1 jf6 , was worried but went off without a hitch.

I just had the same problem. I actually just made a post, but I didn't get the successful from odin. It ws a 1012, and 3 button had always worked before. I'm open to ideas

so are your phones unable to get into download mode at all? I've seen that somewhere about not using Odin oneclick on 1010 or higher but it hasn't been a problem for me the many times I've used Odin. Only oneclick I've used is jf6 though.

lots and lots of theroys
The 1010 and up are unable to use the JF6 one click, regardless of three button fix or not.
I am not sure about the JI6 coming from gingerbread. I used it on a 1010, and it worked fine coming from eclair w/ no bootloader swap. also, i used the one click. From the log you provided it looks like you used full ODIN3 (hopefully that strike worked)
I would say that it was the fact you had ran the command in linux, it may have confused the data cord and have something "tangled" data wise or the 1012 build, although I thought it was only JF6 one click. I need to research more before i brick my 1012.
I remember talking to Team PHX on their IRC and they were talking about these 1010 and up not working with JF6 and one of them said they were pointing people at the JI6 one-click so i believe its compatible.
Although I'm going to stick to my theroy of data getting tangled up.
I wouldnt say it was AIO because it was just running like a background task, nothing more, nothing less.
Oh wait! If you read more you will recieve twice the amount of me thinking!
I have another theroy! Phew, Lots of ideas, little time. well, lots of time Dang, forgot what i was going to say....I'll edit this once i remember OH! the log says cache.rfs twice. could that have been a problem? I wouldnt think so, but may cause a bad flash.
So, this would be a good time to call up connexion (or however you spell that)
Or mobiletechvideos, although im sure its the same guy.

Alright, now the evidence is piling up.
right now the score is
2 for 1010 and up problem
and 2 for a linux command problem.
Time to see if i can use my detective skillZ to figure this out. MORE RESEARCH!

I have used the same jf6 one click many times on this phone with no problem. I didn't notice the double during the flash. It really just stuck at reset. I'm clueless a to why after 10 plus flashes it did it

Yeah... don't get me wrong... I had a 10.10 that worked fine with Odin until one day it went kablooey on one-click.

i read some posts about odin one-click issue cause i had exactly the same issue after jf6 odin so i had to made usb jig then flashed ji6 to fix it.
This is what i figured out so far.
If your device's build number is 1010 or higher and froyo preinstalled (kb1, kb2) from factory, you can't use jf6 one click. It will cause boot loop and won't able to get into download mode with key combo. U need to use usb jig like me to fix it. Use FROYO one click instead.
Maybe build numbers don't matter but the froyo from factory cause the problem.. i guess..

[Official][HOW TO] Samsung/Tmo JI6 Firmware [CONFIRMED]

Samsung has release JI6 in the USA for Tmo in their new Kies Mini, Posted their guide on my site, also this was confirmed by official samsung twitter that this is the exact same update tmo is pushing out over the air.
http://bit.ly/9KoEoq
Did you pull this one from your phone after getting the ota?
Sent from my vibrant
The Kies update would let me see the missing apps when I first launched the market. If I installed an app from the market then I could not see the protected apps anymore. Do you still see the missing apps after installing something from the market?
Just created a MD5 file, it's the same as the "[ROM] T959UVJI6 OTA Stock ODIN Flashable".
My market is still missing desktop visualizer
Market Fix
For those of you having problems with the market, download SGS tools from the market, apply market fix, and you should be able to see your apps again.
On a side note... has anyone noticed that haptic feedback does not work with the android keyboard. It only works with Sype and samsung keyboards.
There's got to be something causing the market discrepancies, but if the MD5 is the same it doesn't look like the code. Would flashing with ODIN with the pit file vs. without the pit make any difference? I believe it was common practice not to use the pit to flash the JI6 OTA.
I flashed with the pit file and the tar and I still don't see all of my apps..
I've flashed it every way I can think of with the same issues. The only one that made a difference was updating with Kies, but like I said on first market access I could see the apps but if I installed one I could no longer see them.

Yeah, Im not sure whats going on here.
From day one since I bought my phone I have had GPS problems, and I have tried every fix out there to no avail. I usually find 10 or 12 satellite but gps doesn't lock onto any of them, and usually takes forever to get a accurate reading.
I finally reverted back to complete stock jfd and am gonna wait for the JI6 OTA.
But I think I just might have to exchange this phone out for a mytouch hd, and give up the beautiful amoled
BTW Ben don't even bother arguing with the dum dums, its just a waste of good brain cells .

i was having problems with gmail not working, market apps etc...
flashed JFD with 512 pit and repartition checked.
then flashed JI6 with 512 pit and repartition unchecked.
that fixed it.
i think you have to repartition or some of the old system files get left behind.
problem is if you repartition with 512 pit and ji6 the phone doesn't boot, so you have to start with JFD and repartition it and then update to ji6

restore to stock with heimdal w/o boot.bin or sbl.bin

I really prefer using linux over windows when possible, so I've been experimenting with a few things, like heimdal.
Well, it's rather inconvenient because I can load all the files into heimdal, except boot.bin and sbl.bin (I'm referring to the heimdal front-end btw), but it won't let me click start...
Is there a way to circumvent this? Is it possible to do via command line? Haven't had time to mess around yet, figured a quick answer may save some time.
Thanks a lot
Regards
Smith
Heimdall won't let you repartition unless you have all the flashable files chosen. I don't know why/how to get around it.

I was trying to just update the modem file on my I9000 which was working fine... It seemed to demand a PIT file so I inputted just the PIT and the modem file.... Now... Nothing....
I have a feeling that this completely bricks my phone but I just wasnt thinking.....

Any ideas or suggestions that dont involve sending this damn thing to bell again would be great.
It might be you checked the re partition box, which I'm poetry sure you don't do if you are just flashing a csc on its own, but I'm noobish, so its just suggestion! As for the pit as well...not sure, but hang in there, answers will come, If you have download mode then all is not lost

Basically it's next to impossible to truly brick the phone.
If you can boot into recovery or download you can fix thru myriad routes all available here on XDA if you just use search.
If you can't then life is a little more difficult, but it is relatively easy to build your own rig to force the phone into recovery.
If you can't fix yourself by those methods, there is nothing your carrier will be able to do either.
buy a jig from ebay and see if it works. There like $4
Thanks for the suggestions the responses to this thread really gives me more confidance in playing around... (just what I needed )
I will definitely be interested in making a JiG at some point just to be absolutely sure life is peachy.
Anyways I managed, to after having a sleep in between tweak sessions on this darn thing, to get it into download mode.
Check out the ezbase rom, find link on insanity thread, I use it to recover from anything and upgraded to gb with it, keep tweaking!

Hardbricked even though ODIN said successful????

I was flashing my phone back to stock tonight and even though ODIN said it completed successfully (passed all the steps, incl SBL.BIN), it is completely dead; won't turn on.
I'm assuming I'll need Connexion's debrick service now, but the big question is HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
I can't figure out WTF went wrong even though ODIN went through 100% fine.........
Basically, the download mode status bar went to full and the software said successful, but the phone never rebooted.
Any help would be great.

Also, check the Am I Bricked (see my sig) thread to know if you need jtag/unbrickable mod.

I was using ODIN 1.81 (same as I'd used 2 days earlier and have used MANY times on this Cappy).
In was running Mosaic 6 (I think it was 6).
I haven't checked the thread you mentioned; I will. I've got a jig and that isn't working; Won't power on, nothing. Tried 3 button combo; nothing.
^ Was that the "3 button fix" Odin that u used to flash back to stock ??
If so, then it only flashes the sbl.bin and NOT the boot.bin file. And that would be the reason that you are now hard bricked. Because coming from Gingerbread bootloaders and flashing only the sbl.bin from the stock 2.1 eclair, you now have mixed bootloaders, which = brick.
But at least that brick can be fixed these days.

Actually, I was using the Odin v1.81 that came with my copy of All in One Toolbox - Funny thing is, this is the version that I downloaded back in March; it'd been working fine for months. This was the first issue I'd ever had with it.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say this was also the first time you used this coming from gingerbread.
Pretty sure the aio contained the "3 button fix" which very irresponsibly only contains one bootloader.
I wish aio would die.
People defend it because its a helpful program. I'd like to remind everyone reading this. Aio is and always be closed source. The developer lost the source. The program is unmaintained. The program is a one-click nuker. The program is responsible for a lot of bricks
I fought the battle to have it removed from the site. I lost. Its time for others to step up and report that program. Aio captivate toolbox is a captivate deathtrap.

Where is this "3 button fix" Odin........just want to make sure I avoid it when in a hurry ??
EDIT: Nix that, found it !

CF Auto Root works with SM-807t variant.

Hey everyone. I can't speak for the other 807 variants but for the Exynos powered T Mobile LTE 807 variant. The CF auto root works perfectly. I haven't tried any roms or custom recoveries and don't plan to until their properly available for this version. This was basically just to debloat the tab s and get rid of all the unwanted crap. Figured I'd take the chance as I was pretty certain it would work. So if anyone who has the 807t you can rest assured that the CF Auto Root (SM-805) version works flawlessly flashing the tar file through Odin.
Good to know!
Great news
PHEW!!!!! I was thinking about returning the device before my 14 days if I couldn't find a root. Thank you for finding this out!!!
Since this has root.. Perhaps developers can make ROMs for it. Cfautoroot might of worked because it has the same chip.
Im thrilled that the root worked for this. I did enjoy my tablet before as well but having root is just all around better. Debloated, disabled DVFS, fixed my youtube app displaying only 720p as the highest quality. I love this tablet even more now. Very glad I rooted. Definitely wasnt the brighest idea I've ever had but it paid off. Glad I could help anyone who was in the same situation as me waiting for a proper root.
As far as roms go I do know that one of the roms on here did work for me. Cant remember the name off the top of my head. However it was designed for the SM-800. The wifi model so there was no way to use my LTE in the rom. I'd be willing to bet that any roms deisgned for the LTE SM-805 model would work for the 807 LTEs. As long as there both Exynos. Wouldn't advise trying that though lol. I'm waiting for a CM rom personally.
The newest version of TWRP in the flashable tar file for odin also works on this 807t model.
Great news! I will try this weekend.
Anyone else give it a go? what was safe to remove?

Sprint is snapdragon right? If so then it wont work for that. Only deisgned for exynos. Also believe there was a guy who tried with the snapdragon variant and ended up basically bricking his tablet because there was no firmware available to reflash and get him out of bootloop.

I finally got around to trying it and for some reason it does not work. When I try to flash the tar.md5 805 file in Odin it fails at about 33%
Nice to know that there is a root option avail for us.
Is it correct that the T805 roms (which dont include the modem) will not work on the T807? There isn't a carrier specific sub-forum for this tablet is there? I could not find one.

I tried 3 different cables and 2 different PCs. USB Debugging is enabled and I installed Samsung USB Drivers. Any other hints or ideas would be helpful.
Go to this site and download the firmware. Pick the top version as it's the newest. Flash it with Odin. Then try to root again. Only thing I can think of bro. The site is a bit of a pain with the pop ups and all that crap but you'll get there.
When you get to the page after clicking the firmware link you want, you need to wait like ten seconds. You'll see a timer at the bottom. When it's done, download links will pop up. Use the green download icons. Can't miss them. Goodluck man.

Go to this site and download the firmware. Pick the top version as it's the newest. Flash it with Odin. Then try to root again. Only thing I can think of bro. The site is a bit of a pain with the pop ups and all that crap but you'll get there.

I updated to this firmware already via OTA, I'll try manually too. Thanks for the idea.
Theres another member in the Chainfire root thread with an 807T who also cannot root using these methods so perhaps not all Tabs work. /shrug
I really hope someone can find root from ground up, or at very least post guide to how to DIY.

Is there? That's really weird. I don't see why some would work and some not. We're all running the exact same firmware. Same model, chip, etc.
But yes we do need a proper root. Unfortunately doesn't look like that's happening anytime soon. Definitely not getting any roms that's for sure. Although Blisspops new lollipop rom does work for this tab, just can't use LTE. So does TWRP. Have tried both, still running TWRP. Only reason I came back to Touchwiz was because I like multi windows and was able to get quad windows (someone transferred the note tablet quad window file to the tab s) and using MW Apps Manager every app has support to be used in the quad window. Granted running 4 windows does eat battery life but I still enjoy it.
I'd try to get chainfire the file needed to make a root compatible with our version. Not sure what is needed though. Would like to get a proper root for the other SM_807t users that this doesn't work for.
